Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.
After a long walk, (you know when your legs are like jelly and you're a bit delirious), the Three Hares Cafe was a caramel-packed safehaven.
I've visited hundreds of cafes (and reviewed a fair few on here) and the negative reviews are a little baffling. Yes, the scones look burnt but they are airy light and a welcome companion to a brew. Funnily enough, they probably know how to make a decent scone given the expertise across the road at the Black Bull Inn.
It is a small cafe, only a few tables, that doubtless gets filled quickly but Sedbergh has alternatives nearby if you're stuck.
They nailed my preference for a caramel slice (90% oozing caramel) and the pies and other bits we took home all hit the spot. Special mention for their donuts. They look like giant charred cannon balls that ooze jam. Glorious when warmed up.

We stopped here on a very warm day for a drink and a bite to eat as we saw it was dog friendly. We couldn't sit on the balcony/patio area as previous dog owners had failed to clean up after their dog had a 💩. We didn't mind as the indoor area was cool with a lovely breeze.
We ordered a sausage bap and a tuna toastie with a flat white and a fanta. The lady serving was very pleasant and efficient.
Other people came in after us with a dog and were miffed they couldn't sit outside. I think she was fair in saying she had made the decision after the 💩 incident and had to treat everyone the same. They were rather rude and walked out after sitting in another side room that was 'too hot'.
The toastie arrived and I was a bit disappointed. Hardly toasted and very runny tuna mayo with nothing accompanying it for £7. The bread was your average sliced bread too.
The sausage bap was £8. It had 3 sausages and my husband really enjoyed it. Rather expensive but you're paying for the view/location.
I would return but I would not order the tuna toastie again. Poor value for money.
Stunning setting, fantastic friendly staff and wonderful food. The owners clearly know what’s what. Sat outside with our dog in-tow - sunny day. You must have lunch here.
Booked a table as we wanted a good traditional Christmas meal. We were not disappointed. The staff were welcoming and attentive. We were allocated a table close to the fire which was fantastic. All three of us chose the traditional turkey Christmas dinner. Each meal was plated well, well presented and more importantly, delicious. Definitely can say the Punch Bowl is worth going to for a hearty meal and drinks. Staff are a credit to the new owners.
The service was excellent: friendly and fast. We needed a quick breakfast before walking Scafell Pike and this bakery did us proud. The music was really good: the Beatles. The sausage rolls I bought to take away were amazing. They had a brilliant meat-to-pastry ratio. You must go here if you get a chance. The hot cross buns were lovely.
The Carus Green consistently delivers excellent food and value for money. The team led by Helen deliver exceptional customer service, we are greeted with a smile, efficient service and all team members despite being very busy take the time to have a quick catch-up and are a credit to the club. We highly recommend a visit if you are in the area, golf clubs are not needed and with free parking a coffee and a great selection of cakes on offer it is also a great place to meet friends.

Working in Kendal we booked a table for three people at 1930. We arrived on time and were shown to our table. As we did so a large party of people was clearly arriving into another area of the restaurant. The waiter assured us that he would ensure that our order was placed ahead of this group. Drinks were served. Shortly after 2010 meals began to be served to the large group ! We queried this with the waiter and were advised ‘your meals are next ‘ !!! At 2030 two of our three starters arrived - the other at 2035 ! Not good enough ! Our main courses were delivered around 2055 - as the large group of people were now leaving ! As a new business we were amazed and concerned about this terrible level of service. The food we eventually received was as best ‘average’ with a watery puddle rather than a sauce ! There was no apology provided to us! Completely unacceptable and as a result I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone !
What a delightful and pleasant experience eating lunch at this dog friendly cafe yesterday. The staff were so friendly, attentive and welcoming. The food was delicious - we ordered three full English breakfasts - but there was an extensive menu on offer. The food was served piping hot, including the toast! Thank you for making our first ever visit to Kendal such a treat.
Closure
I was in the Beer Hall on Saturday and heard a few rumours......
I did however believe that the owners would give the customers
( and staff) the courtesy of some notice of closure - if it was indeed inevitable. Website and social media gives no indication of a clearly pre-planned closure.
Halewood International, as the owners, have behaved in a sh?tyy way (again - after the covid era treatment of staff) and deserve nothing but failure.
I wish the staff and loyal customers - all the best for the future.
A long standing and frequent customer
Can only describe Charlie,s as excellent, the food was delicious on a cold and wet day and staff so friendly and helpful. We all chose the full English served with piping hot tea and coffee and have to say the sausages were top notch and the prices very reasonable. Could,nt understand some of the negative comments about the staff as we could not fault them in anyway. To the staff thank you for the tasty lunch and pleasant service.Top marks for Charlie,s
