Broughton is a tiny village of 500-plus souls. So it's no surprise there'd only be one bakery. Fortunately, it opens at 8:30 (except Sundays). Before I move on, this advisory: Ignore the online menu. It "belonged" to the bakery that was formerly here. There are no full breakfasts, but there are loads of baked treats and hot drinks. However, if you fancy quiche for breakfast (and I do), there's 2-3 quiches. I recommend the Quiche Lorraine. Most locals will order takeout, but there's a seating area (it costs extra if you're eating in). Nevertheless, the staff is friendly, and with good company, you can savor your hot drink & pastries.

I spent nearly £3.50 on a Pasty. Arrived home to find the bottom was burnt and then to top it off, after I removed the 1 inch tasteless thick crust from around the Pasty the inside also tasted of nothing but bland potato. This place has gone backwards since the original owners of this place had to retire after being voted one of the top 3 in the Country.

We stopped in the bakery on a Saturday morning for breakfast and were not disappointed. Whilst sitting in the cosy cafe you could smell the bakers which was amazing. Between us we had a breakfast sandwich which contained fresh sausage, bacon and egg and a portion of porridge and toast. None of the food disappointed and was clearly extremely fresh and well cooked. Additionally we also brought some pies from the bakery for our evening meal which were equally high quality with plenty of filling. Definitely worth a stop if you are near this cafe and fancy a break.

I.live in this village and have to say , this bakery is awful ! Always changing staff , and bakers ! The bread is awful.in my.opinion .the cakes and pastries are awful , sometimes burnt but still they serve them. The prices are silly. Its up for sale and im hoping someone who knows how to bake will take it on ! This lot have not had a clue ! Since they took over , it used to be so so good not for a while now its really bad ! This is just my.opinion though , others might find it ok , but on talking to some of the locals we agree its just bad ! Hygiene is awful too flies everywher in summer ! Been to the cafe a couple of times and it’s been good. First time we had a light snack and recently a coffee and cake. These were enjoyable. We’ve had pies, cakes and bread from the shop and they’ve always been good. Couple of things I would say is that the toilets are up a steep staircase so if you have any disability you wouldn’t be able to use them. The carpet leading up to them could also do with a vacuum once in a while as it was quite dirty. The produce are all openly displayed without any coverage. A fly was settling on some of the cake trays, which is a little unpleasant. Maybe having goods under plastic covers would be an idea??

Popped in for a sandwich and tea to take away on routed to a cricket match. Ordered , then chose to wait in adjoining cafe ( because of a lack of room due to a large queue building up and only 2 of the 6/7 tables in the cafe being taken) . Lady ( grey hair) seemed uncomfortable with me sitting there.. when giving me my tea ,told me I was " take away " so was I leaving ... then when I told her I was just waiting for a sandwich I had just bought off her , told me to wait outside so she could have her table back for VAT paying customers " you want me to wait in the street? "..... " yes" The cafe was 90% EMPTY!! Never wrote a review of anything in my life and have visited this spot maybe a dozen times over the years on the way to games... Will never be back... Popped in for breakfast as this was the only place open at 9.30am on a Wednesday morning in the village. The place was busy but we still got a table and after waiting 15 minutes our 2 half breakfasts arrived. They were just what we needed for our walk to Swinside Stone Circle, hot, tasty and very good value for money, less than a fiver I think. The young girl behind the counter was very friendly and the home cooked pies and bread looked amazing too. I was saddened to see a sign advertising the bakery up for sale after reading about its history on the menu. I can only hope this place survives as it seems not just a village bakery but the heart of the community......

Called in for a light lunch & both ordered poached eggs on toast. Twenty five minutes later, our lunch appeared looking rather like wet fried eggs on sad looking "toast", and two of the egg whites were raw..totally inedible. Still not sure how it was possible to get poached eggs so wrong, to serve raw eggs after such a long wait. We told the waitress (who was lovely, and did apologise for the delay) that the meals were inedible, and refused to pay. It's shocking the "chef" had the audacity to serve uncooked eggs, and then expecting the waitress to serve it! Bad food, waste of food by bad cooking, bad service. Also a lady was keeping flies off uncovered cakes with a fly swatter, unhygienic! I used to love this cafe! Happy to discuss further if needed, i should've taken a photo to show how bad it was!

Visited on several occasions during our stay near Broughton in Furness. Upon entering the first time you know you have to come back as the choice is overwhelming. Managed three visits and have sampled baked goods (sweet and savoury) and this morning a hot sandwich (managed to get some of my wife’s too. Result!) with a lovely cup of tea. We tried several types of coffee, all delicious. It’s great to “earwig” the conversations of people at the counter who have “just popped in”. They sound exactly as I felt on stepping over the threshold.

Huge selection of fantastic pies, quiches, sausage rolls etc. Also loads of cakes - went for a cinnamon roll which was delicious. We couldn't believe the amazing value. In fact it was so good we went back the next day and my wife had exactly the same quiche again, and I had to have another cinnamon roll. I also bought a custard to eat later but made a mistake... I went for a small and should have bought a large (or maybe more than one!). Absolutely the best custard I have ever had! Worth making a detour just for that.

Nipped in for lunch with my friend and her little girl, as we walked in I asked the older waitress ‘is your cafe open today’ she replied with a abrupt ‘YES’ with no eye contact then proceeded to say ‘someone will be over go sit down’ we ordered 2 milkshakes and a bottle of coke which took 20 minutes to come (and milkshakes very disappointing). When they eventually came she brought over cutlery and a sauces box. We took some packets of mayo and salad cream out for our meals and noticed they were out of date! When our meals came we asked said women if we could get some new mayo as the ones we had were out of date she said ‘I’ll look’ then came back and launched 2 packets on to our table without any acknowledgement or apologies. Having visited this cafe in the past - and enjoying its cosy, welcoming ambience - I was terribly disappointed by the changes wrought by the new owners. The dining room is now very stark and austere; gone are the local views by talented artists, the wildlife cards, the atmospheric background music and various artefacts and ornaments that made this place such a delightful venue for meeting friends. Harsh, clinical and cold. Given that we were here about 4 o'clock, we had not expected to have tables all round us being cleaned and having chairs stacked upon them, ready for the next day. Service was not fast.We bought 3 cakes to take away with us, only to find that the assistant had only remembered 2 of them. This was rectified. The cakes and pies are still good but what a shame there is nowhere pleasant to eat them anymore.I cannot understand why anyone would choose to buy such a lovely, thriving business, only to remove almost all of the things that made it so successful. We will not be returning to this cafe in its present state.

We've visited this bakery before and found it OK, however on this visit things were a little different. My wife is a coeliac and requires Gluten Free options, something we thought that wouldn't be beyond this award winning establishment. However it turns out that very poorly informed staff and a lack options led to my wife being misled into eating something that was actually NOT gluten free. The atmosphere wasn't very relaxing in there and I'm afraid we won't be coming again. The Lake District has proved to be very accommodating for my wife's dietary needs. unfortunately this wasn't somewhere that did.

A couple of years ago we visited this bakery regularly- so were looking forward to a return to what was an award winning food outlet. How it has gone downhill, under new ownership I understand. We arrived at 9.30 a.m. together with two grandchildren and were the only customers. We waited 10 minutes for service. We then waited a further 15 minutes for some drinks and a couple of cakes and toast. There were 6 more people in the cafe by this time but we never did see some of them served. The mike for our cafetiere coffee was sour so coffee and milk had to be returned. The cappuccino almost stone cold and had to be returned for reheating. This took a further 6 minutes. I had been anticipating the thick prize winning toast I remembered but after a further wait I received two thin slices of what may have been ordinary sliced loaf. One of the grandchildren received the wrong cake. WHAT A FARCE. Four of the other people in the cafe were French tourists and we sympathised with them for the lack of service. To add insult to injury we purchased four sausage rolls to eat on our picnic. They were terrible and we threw most of them away. Not the good rolls we recalled. All in all we were amazed at just how much this place has gone downhill. NOT recommended.

This was an award winning bakery with previous owners. Sadly not what it used to be. Product prices are same but it's obvious they aren't using the same quality ingredients. You used to be able to taste the Green and Blacks chocolate but now the brownie could have come from a supermarket; making it a disappointingly average taste. Service was with a smile but she had to leave us 4 times to go and check if what we ordered was available... and much of what we wanted had sold out at early lunch time. This has been the same on previous visits. I don't think we will return unless they bring back the green and blacks!

A busy shop that sells lovely bread and fabulous pies and cakes. Really scrummy !! They also serve teas and coffees which looked good.

Read a few reviews about this bakery and nearly didn't try it but soooo glad we did cos the breakfasts and hospitality were on point. Really nice, good quality produce and a great selection and variety of home baked on the premises produce, mouth watering and inviting ( no good if your on a diet).

We bought tasty fresh bread from the bakery and on a separate day 9 of us ate together in the cafe. The staff were friendly and accommodating and the food was lovely, fresh and great value for money (quite large portion sizes on some of the dishes). We will definitely come back next time we are in the area.

Having treated ourselves to bread and cakes during the week we decided to have breakfast before our journey home and it was lovely. Service swift and food fresh.

Stopped in towards the end of a long journey to get lunch. Latte was good. BLT roll was nice and served with an interesting salad and a few crisps all on a sodden board.

They took something on that was so wonderful in every way and have turned in into a bad copy of what it was, still serving the same cakes and selling less bread that was on offer with less flavour, sure you make change but they changed something that worked and now I see nothing what it was you would see the place heaving at a weekend, the emptiness only shows what everyone is seeing and that's something that was brilliant has turned into a sad and dismal looking place. They need to change the website because you are not selling artisan bread in your shop any longer, also you can tell how good it's run by the staff, I see a new waitress every month don't seem to last long.

I am a local and live in Broughton and this bakery is a shambles. Never anything new, and nothing tastes fresh. Several years ago it got taken over, and it's never been the same. The owners cannot be bothered and can never seem to keep there staff. The standered of baking is just awful. Often bread and cakes are burnt but they sell them anyway. The place just is not the same it's often dirty too. I would not recommend this place anymore , it used to win awards when the old owners had it, nowadays it's just rubbish.i don't go in anymore it's just not up to decent quality products.

My review is mixed. It's a bonus that they allow dogs, this is great. The food is lovely. The baked foods particularly delightful. We enjoyed the food, although we over heard 3 tables today say their food was cold. But for us, no complaints about the food. However, the floor was unbelievably dirty. The stairs to the toilet were filthy. They hadn't been cleaned in weeks surely. The cafe floor was full of big crumbs and wrappers etc. We arrived at 12 noon, so I wouldn't expect such a dirty floor at that time. Our table was directly in front of the most hideous artwork. Yes we chose to sit there but we chose a table out of the way as we had a large dog. The artwork has a child weeing, naked men and women and other unsightly features. Not a piece you expect to see in a cafe or village bakery and that's coming from an artist. We also felt that the older ladies, the members of staff were quite sharp and looked disgruntled. The young lady who served us to buy bread etc over the counter was lovely and friendly. But we couldn't say that about the other older ladies I'm afraid. Almost rude and put out was their attitude. The bakery itself is a cute little bakery. So lovely to see one in a village.

Insulting! I can't order a bacon and egg roll cause or not breakfast time and cook won't do any bacon, so I have to make to with less than average soup.I could have dealt with that if it hadn't have been the person on the next table who orders after me , a cream tea to which there all out get a bacon sandwich!!!

Pleasantly surprised by this cute little cafe in a small town. We started and ended our holiday having breakfast here and both times were very happy with the yummy, good quality food we were served!

Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.

Well I won't be going back ,the food was awful ...the tomato ,basil and pesto soup had a horrible sharp but sugary sweet taste...the sandwich that came with it had the cheapest bright yellow " butter "on. ,a maximum of one slice of ham and the cheapest mustard . My 4 year old grandson could have made a better sandwich ! My husband had pie which had hardly any meat in it and the gravy was unusual tasting ( to say the least ) and sweet . I've had far superior microwave meals ! The toilets which were always an asset to the pub had gone downhill too.

An excellent, local menu, very reasonably priced, and warm, real fires. No better way to spend a chilly autumn evening.
