Waterside Cafe/Bistro in South Lakeland

Such a friendly vegetarian cafe... And dog friendly. Staff so lovely and helpful. Me and my dog have been going here on a regulate basis for a while now. The breakfasts are fantastic...and the Fluffy pancakes are so yummy. Having said that.. all food is exceptional! (Coffee is great too.) Highly recommend.

Despite it being a bit difficult to get to due to the ongoing flood defense work on the river, it was fairly busy for a Monday lunchtime. Our table was out of sight of the kitchen area which might have explained why it seemed to take a while for someone to come and take our order. We ordered coffees and a glass of water and had another wait for them. We then ordered food which came fairly quickly and both our meals were fine, my wife in particular enjoying her veggie kebab. Here's a suggestion - have a jug of water and glasses where customers can help themselves. That would have made all the difference to our lunch today.

Definitely the friendliest cafe in Kendal, the owner and start are always so welcoming. Delicious cheese scones and smoothies. Baby friendly too, with a little play area and toys. We are glad to have the waterside on our doorstep and still easy to access from the abbot hall side, while the other side of the footpath is closed.

Greta food and lovely cosy athmosphrere on a cool October day. The pink latte was lovely! Food was really good- I had the chicken nugget wrap with a mix of side salad (butter beans, couscous and potato salad). Very tasty and much better than anticipated! My partners was also very tasty but I forgot the name! Great food and great price: staff where lovely too!!! Keep it up💗💗💗

Great location, wonderful staff and delicious food and drink. One of the best vegetarian places in Kendal. Was so good, we ate there several times. The quiches, salads and Buddha bowls are very tasty. Generous portions, reasonably priced.

I’m a local and come here whenever I’m in town. Always fantastic delicious fresh vegetarian and vegan food and great service from the friendly team. Salads are amazing and they offer a good choice of mains and snacks. One of my favourites is the soup of the day with a wholemeal cheese scone. 😋

After looking at their website we decided to stop for a sandwich as advertised on the online menu. On saying we just wanted a sandwich we were told that only a la carte was served so we opted for a starter each from the menu. The food was OK but service was slow and atmosphere was non-existent. Plus point dogs allowed.

Having had a full day walking around Kendal, my daughter and I were happy to arrive in this relaxed and welcoming Waterside café. We asked for an Irish coffee and though they hadn't made one before and didn't have any whiskey, tried to accommodate us and offered to make one with brandy instead. What we did get was a friendly face and a freshly made and well priced houmous salad to take out, space to sit and use the toilet while we waited, and directions up to the castle before it got dark. Nice crowd and interior, open on a bank holiday, couple of outside tables by the river and dog friendly. Would highly recommend and will be returning when back in the area.

Called in for lunch on New Year bank holiday Monday. Good service from pleasant waiter. Very tasty soup with cheese scone and toasted tea bread. Nice atmosphere with view over the river. Would recommend.

A great visit and we will definitely return. I asked a local friend to Kendal who is a food blogger where to go and eat on a Tuesday lunch that would cater for my vegan friend. This was one of the options he gave me, I do eat meat but I am also very happy to eat Veggie /Vegan food for a change and wasn’t disappointed. Steady flow of customers turning over the tables. I had the tart of the day with 3 salads and my friend had the Vegan Kebab which was so big she asked for a takeaway tray to eat the rest later at home. Friendly staff, clean environment and good cooked food. Toilets also clean. All in all a success thank you we will be back.

We were attracted by vegan food and a riverside view, so dropped in for lunch and ordered the "Dirty Dog" vegan hot-dog. It arrived after ten-minutes of what I had hoped was careful preparation. Hmmm. The chips were OK, but the hot dog was a tepid/cold dog with supermarket sauerkraut, French's mustard, ketchup and a crumb. As my partner said, at least French's mustard is always nice. The accompanying salad for me was an iced beetroot number, not unpleasant if a bit out of place but ... my partner got iced and undressed chickpeas. All in all, not great. A shame, as I wanted to like this restaurant. Incidentally the river view was blocked off due to flood defence work, which is just one of those things...

We aren’t vegetarians or vegans but enjoy good food and the food here is tasty, healthy and a nice change from a meat based meal. Our adult son said the kebab with firecracker sauce was delicious and I thoroughly enjoyed my Buddha Bowl. My husband enjoyed his too but regretted not choosing the kebab! Our granddaughter had kids beans on sourdough toast served with cucumber and grated carrot. She loved it but it was only beans on toast at the end of the day. There are flapjacks, scones and cake available but I didn’t see them until I went to pay but they looked good. The coffee was very nice but the black lemon tea was out of a bottle and a bit expensive for what you got. All in all I would certainly go back next time I’m in Kendal.

We used to eat here regularly but have moved away but last week we returned to Waterside to meet some friends. As usual the food was excellent and Magda was there -the perfect host. As good as anywhere to eat-wish we still lived nearer.

Had a delicious lunch here this week. Lots of fantastic vegan and veggie options. Good service and good portions. The location is stunning too. Enjoyed the pink latte with oat milk, the stuffed mushrooms were great as was the Buddha boek and the burger. Will be back!

Come here most Saturdays with the family if the weather is fine as it’s beautiful to sit outside and watch the river. Great, homemade veggie/vegan fare. Nice chilled vibe. The cakes are made from scratch and taste delicious, especially the cinnamon scones.

Yeah so good to be able to visit again. Same high standard of cuisine and staff as lovely as ever. The scones are the best I've ever tasted. Would recommend this cafe to everyone who visits the lakes

Not sure if this cafe is vegan only didnt see any mention of it, but if it is let people know clearlySituated in a prime posotion on the riverside with lovely views, thats were it ends for me. Pot of tea (tea leaves) was dreadful, and by the time it had brewed it was warm. then i moticed the regulars were on coffee can understand why.. Ordered 2 full breakfast, was asked "vegan or normal" asked for normal , shocked when it arrived, no sign of sausage, bacon black pudding, hash browns which i would guess most people would expect some of these on a full brekki, we got pot of beans 2 eggs 1 tomato 1 small mushroom with cheese, bit of salad and 2 toast all for £20 will not be visiting again. Sorry.

This is such a lovely place to eat, and is easily my favourite place n Kendal. I don't really like takeaways, so it has been a while since I have been here, but it is absolutely wonderful to be back. The place is as good as ever. Delicious, healthy food - just what we all need, wonderful staff, well spaced, clean tables. I usually have the salad plate, and it was excellent - the quinoa was a new one for me, and was lovely. Excellent value for money, can't wait to go back. Many, many thanks to everyone involved, you are all working so hard to make it so good.

Chanced on this cafe today and very glad we did. Just off Kendal shopping area, overlooking river. Great selection of vegan/veggie food. Had the 'dirty chips'and shared a salad plate. All delicious. Great selection of cake which we took with us to enjoy later. Will definately come back when next in Kendal. Everything very clean and staff took time to check our order met our dietry needs

Unimpressed. I would not expect to sit at a table with used crockery, left over food and unwiped surfaces pre pandemic. But now during a pandemic this is what we found... No queuing system and table cleansing on place. We had to ask for the table to be cleaned and the staff member did not apologies for not having cleaned it and seemed surprised that we were asking for a clean table. I did not notice any masks worn by the staff that served us. Other guests not asked to wear masks while not seated. I think a lot should change before I would return here.

Highly recommended, we ate here yesterday, the staff are very kind and helpful, the food is excellent and you get plenty of it, the only small compliant is my wife’s coffee was a little cold, but she drunk it without complaining.So maybe they could monitor the temperature of the coffee they serve.

Visited Kendal for the first time in many months on April 16th 2021. We have called at Waterside Cafe a number of times and always been quite happy with the service - but not today! We ordered and paid for two Americanos and had to wait a full 25 minutes before they arrived. In that time a number of other tables were served before us; we had to ask twice where our coffee was before it arrived. When it finally did so it was no more than lukewarm. By then we had almost run out of time and had to make do with this wretched offering. In addition we noticed that cups and plates from the previous occupants of our table - which we'd moved to an empty table - were still there when we left. Very disappointed.

Great location by the river, the vegan and the veggie breakfasts were amazing big portions with homemade bread. We even took some of the chocolate abs beetroot cake away with us. Will deffo come again.

My husband and I both had the beetroot wraps but he had the nuggets and I had the falafel and both were really good. The staff were accommodating and friendly. He isn’t a vegetarian but there was a good choice for him too.

Tuvimos que "matar algo de tiempo" y teníamos un perro con nosotros. . . y COVID - 19 restricciones en pleno apogeo, pero había una mesa afuera, excelente menú, personal encantador (aunque un poco estresado por la increíble respuesta a la oferta de "Boris" en ejecución en ese momento. Bien organizado, limpio, aireado, comida colorida, saludable, abundante y ... lo más importante, ¡muy sabroso!

El tiempo de espera en la puerta para sentarse fue un poco largo porque nadie del personal tuvo un minuto para venir y hablar con nosotros y verificar si queremos pedir helado o una mesa para 2. ¡Pero la comida gana todo! ! ! Volveré . ¡Defo! !

La comida es tan buena como siempre, con platos de ensalada imaginativos, veganos, muy saludables y deliciosos. El personal es amable y simpático, y conoce bien el menú y los ingredientes. Great lunch on a wet day in Kendal - good food & service. Good tea & coffee, one tasty Mediterranean vegetable tart with salad, one tasty soup with cheese scone - would definitely go back!

This review is long, long overdue. The Waterside is one of my favourite places in Kendal, I've been there numerous times, and never left unhappy about food or service. Location is very good, near the town centre, by the river, perfect to pop in after shopping or a walk. The staff are always attentive and friendly, nothing seems too much trouble for them. The place is children friendly, which is a godsend - there's a corner for kiddies to play in, while you're drinking your coffee in peace. The local mums really appreciate it, there is always a group of friends with babies and older children when I come. It's the first place I consider when I have my children with me (and when I'm in adult only company too). If you don't have kids, there are plenty of tables further away from the 'kids section', where you can talk and eat in peace. The coffee there is very good, I love the oat milk lattes! The green forest cake is my favourite which I can rarely resist. There's a great selection of lighter bites (try the salads!) if your just peckish, and a good range of generous mains too. Literally, every time I chose something it was full of flavour and very satisfying. In short - if you haven't been to the Waterside cafe yet, you're seriously missing out! It's a real gem.

So glad that we stumbled across this cafe on our trip to Kendal. The Food was excellent and with a short menu, you know the food is going to be fresh and delicious. The carrot cake definitely had to be the highlight of this trip though!

Went here for brunch. Lovely cafe situated on the banking the River Kent. The menu was varied for a vegetarian and vegan cafe. There were many dishes to chose from. Brilliant, helpful staff who advised me on the specials so we chose the vegan burger. It was served with a gluten free bap and 3 kinds of salads. There was a selection of 8 to chose from. I had curried cauliflower, pickled red cabbage and carrot and tangerine. Very filling and reasonably priced for the quantity. Thoroughly recommend. Will definitely be back

The owner Magna (who is charming) always has time for a few minutes with you however busy she is , the staff are very friendly and the food is great.

Spent the day in Kendal and found this fantastic cafe. Amazing cakes and a good cup of cofffe. Clean child friendly and the staff were brilliant too.

Today’s Thai cuisine was absolutely delicious. The vegan menu, prepared by expert chef Helen Pateman, was outstanding. Mixed starter platter was a meal in itself and was followed by some excellent, crispy aubergine with rice and noodles. To finish, I had banana fritters with ice cream - scrumptious!

We were visiting Kendal and walked in along the riverside and came across Waterside cafe. We called in for a brew and decided to order a scone each. We do tend to use our "scone test" and this was up with the best. I'd not seen or tasted a scone like it before. It was delicious and the tea was great. Looking at the menu and seeing the plates of food being served we decided that must go back and carry out a proper sampling. The food is all vegetarian and vegan and we have family and friends who are, so we've been recommending it to everyone. Thank you Waterside cafe, you made our day.

I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. The portions are generous without being too much, the price is set inclusively, the service is attentive and friendly and the menu is on point. The food itself is also fresh and made with oodles of care. Go!

No sabía que era un café solo vegetariano cuando fuimos para el brunch (no somos vegetarianos) pero fue absolutamente fantástico. El desayuno completo era maravilloso, al igual que la fajita / quesadilla de frijoles que tenía mi esposa. El café era de calidad! Y el bollo que tuvimos un poco más tarde fue fabuloso. Buen wifi fuerte y nos sentamos a mirar el cricket en nuestro iPad durante un par de horas en paz. Muy recomendable.

We don't get to Kendal very often but when we do we always go to the Waterside Cafe and we are NEVER disappointed. Magda always comes to have a chat- great place and great food.

This is one of our favourite lunch time restaurants, especially in good weather when we can sit by the river in the sun.

In the summer this is a great place to sit outside and have a coffee and enjoy the riverside location. The rest of the year my dog and I sit in the dog friendly end and have a coffee and cake.

I'm familiar with this establishment having been in and around Kendal for many years: However when I came in with my two young boys (youngest being five) and asked about the soup I did not expect it to be, when served, over powerful on the chilli. In fact not really suitable for young children. However, it was more than evident who the soups were for. In addition I advised the soups were for the two boys but at no time was I advised that the soup was quite hot with chilli: Certainly NOT FIT for young children!

Nice to go here for a treat from time to time, as a little more expensive than other places in town, whether for lunch or one of their nice cakes. Not on the high street so you may miss it, but it really is not far from the centre of town. Popular with locals.

Stumbled upon this lunch time venue by the river. The menu choice was varied and matched our preferences. Will delight in returning in the Summer to enjoy the outside seating and the view.

We often drop into the Waterside when we are in Kendal and, as usual, the food was excellent and the service friendly and attentive. We just had the soup and cheese scones this time, and they were really good. Best cheese scones I've had for ages. We've previously had fuller lunches such as quiche and salad which is good as well. The location is also good being by the river but close to the town. Heartily recommended!

My wife is a vegetarian so I get dragged along to various places, but this is the best one and happy to tag along anytime. I love the wraps and healthy lattes I had a great beetroot drink, but above all go for the moss cake its amazing

Tenía una cita con una rebanada de chocolate y Julie tenía un brownie de chocolate. Tom no quiso comer nada más. Todos los pasteles estaban deliciosos, puedo decir esto después de haber probado una cuchara llena del pastel de espinacas del plato de Steve. En general, es un gran lugar para comer si está contento con la comida vegetariana o vegana. Un sobresaliente para la joven que nos sirvió y la ayuda que dio.

Landed up here looking for a quick meal. Staff very friendly and informative. Unfortunately we were looking for non vegetarian food. So moved to another location. However I will be back as the menu looks yum.

Esta cafetería se encuentra en un lugar hermoso, aunque el día que fuimos tuvimos que sentarnos adentro ya que no queríamos enfrentarnos a las inclemencias del tiempo. Solo teníamos bollos de frutas y una bebida, pero todo estaba muy bueno. Los bollos tenían un sabor ligeramente picante y era bueno tener té de hojas en lugar de una bolsita de té. Sin duda me gustaría volver para el almuerzo.

Great situation with a few tables outside by the river which was lovely during this hot summer. The menu has lots of interesting options. The vegetable baklava was great. They also gave a fantastic selection of salads which you can choose from to accompany some meals. Or even just have a selection of salads as a meal which was delicious

Visited this great place today for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The service was excellent and the food absolutely gorgeous. We were also able to take our dog in with us in their designated area. We would highly recommend this place.

Visited here on 2/7 for coffee and cake with family. Great setting beside the river. I tried the spinach cake and the chocolate and beetroot cake, both were delicious. The staff were lovely and nothing was too much trouble!

Frist visited last August with vegan friends and again last weekend with vegetarians. Everyone totally thrilled with the food, atmosphere and service. We'll be back.

It’s so lovely to find a cafe in Kendal that focuses on plant based goodness. We absolutely love the bean burgers and salads they do here. Everything is bursting with flavour and health. Brilliant. The portions are large and we were able to take leftovers home in a cardboard box. They also use metal strAws which is great for the environment.

My two year old is most welcome - probably more so than we are here! An absolute joy to visit, and such a great feeling to find somewhere who does vegan food and cake as my lad has a dairy allergy. I would visit this place even if he didn't to be fair. Play area for the kids, great cake and drinks. I had an awesome curry the other week.

Visited for a late lunch today. We had the pear and goats cheese salad bowl and the quesadillas. Both dishes were absolutely delicious. There was a wonderful range of salads which offered something for everyone. There were also plenty of tempting cakes to finish off the visit. Definitely worth a visit with plenty of dishes to suit both meat eaters, vegans and veggies alike.

Lovely place for lunch with views across the river. Varied vegetarian menu with vegan and gluten free options easily identifiable. Sweet treats available too! Family friendly.

Stopped here for a drink ended up having a quick snack as well. Hotchoc was great as were the teas and coffees the rest of the groop had. Lovely chocolate and date slice I had and thr fruit scone had by one of the others.

We love going here -Magda the owner always comes and has a chat and the food is EXCELLENT. It is right beside the river and has a lovely ambience. The staff are always helpful and cheerful. If we lived nearer we would g more often. Well worth a visit.

We tried this cafe for lunch as we based in the South Lakes. There is lots of choice in Kendal and it's good to try different places.

I took my mum here today for something different because I had heard so many great things.

This café is amazing. The food is so fresh and all delicious. I have the 5 salads plate which is always delicious, very nutritious with nuts and pulses included. Try the turmeric cauliflower, or the celeriac, apple and hazelnut, or the artichoke tomato and olive. There are usually 10 to choose from, and it is so hard to only have 5 of them. It is always very filling. There are always specials on the board, regularly changing soups, savoury tart, burger and a curry. Fantastic tea selection as well. My husband is a total carnivore, and he loves coming here. Also good for gluten free and vegan diets. The cakes always look amazing. The staff are superb, so helpful and charming. They really understand their role in making your visit exceptional, and are a great asset to the café. The setting is lovely, by the river, it has tables outside, and inside it is all fresh and clean, with a good children's area, a mix of table sizes and a sofa. I love this place, every time I go it is perfect, my only criticism (and I can criticize anything) is that they don't open in the evenings, so please, please take the hint Magda and Co. Can't wait to go back!

Great food, imaginative as well as some good classics. So good we had to visit again the next day. Had an amazing crumble slice for dessert . Highly recommend.

Excellent selection of vegetarian food, delicious coffee and yummy cakes. We had the beetroot risotto, curry of the week (cauliflower & potato) and the vegetable baklava, all of which were delicious. we were too full to eat cakes there and then so took home an apricot crumble slice, a chocolate brownie and a stunning looking and tasting spinach cake. The staff are all very friendly and helpful, and the service was quick. Highly recommended.

We are 5 decided Carnivores who had a great lunch here - the salads that came with mains were delicious. I had a lovely carrot cake for pudding- everything homemade and tasty. Definitely recommend

My daughter introduced me to this place. A beautiful bistro with window views to the River Kent. The food was amazing... especially the puddings!! Service was second to none and I’ll be back here very soon!Excellent choices for gluten free food and other allergy issues. This is a great little cafe. The location is lovely over looking the river. The food is FANTASTIC!. Great for everyone and they also go gluten free, vegan and they are child friendly. It is a great place to go and I will be going back.

We found this bistro on a trip to Kendal and we needed some lunch but a place we could park near. We saw it on our way out of town and did a detour to go and eat there. I arranged an early evening event at this venue and I am very glad I did! There were approximately 40 of us celebrating my husband's 60th birthday Magda and her team not only had an amazing buffet and welcome drinks waiting for our guests but had the Cafe looking lovely. Everyone had a super evening and we're still receiving positive messages from our guests. I would highly recommend this venue. It's also a great spot for coffee, cake, lunches right beside the river. We stumbled across this place during a lunchtime stop off in Kendal. What a find. Hands down the best vegan cafe I've ever been to. Great plant based food, generous portions, tremendous value for money and genuinely friendly staff. It ticks all the boxes for me. Can't wait to visit again

This is a proper gem of a cafe. The staff are very friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Coffees are really well made and there's a large tea menu also. The menu is extensive and well thought out, and is absolutely the best in town for vegan/veggie choices. I had the chef's hummus and salad, really delicious and very reasonably priced. Bright, airy interior, nicely decorated, wonderful views over the river, free wifi. Thoroughly recommend.
