We came here for an evening meal while we were visiting Windermere for my wife's birthday, she had looked online at the different restaurants recommended to us from the hotel we were stating at and she had chosen this one off the meals provided on the menus we could see online. When we first got there we were sat on a table in a corner of the restaurant, the seating was uncomfortable, it was as though they had squeezed as many tables as possible into the small space they had so it felt cramped (which is an understatement to be fair) we were so close to some of the other tables I could've leant over and had a drink of what they were having. Our "waiter" and I use that term very loosely, came over and introduced himself and at first it seemed promising, came back to order our drinks "...and what are we having to drink?" I wasn't sure what I wanted, hoping the waiter could've made a suggestion, yet he just stood there, he brought the drinks and proceeded to robotically ask us in the same flat tone "...and what do you want to eat" he gave the impression that he didn't really care and he came across as quite rude, we we told by the owners of the guest house we stayed at "oh francines, excellent choice, the food is great and the service is exceptional" evidently not. We were brought some complimentary canapés, yet neither of us knew what they were, yet we ate them nonetheless. With the food, we had ordered starters, which weren't bad and gave us some hope that the food was going to save the situation, wife had escargot (or snails to us mere mortals) and I had a scallop and black pudding creation, the one I had was good, was lacking in quantity but was good, I took a hard pass on trying the snails. Our mains came, and the wife ordered a seafood casserole, I had something called "a pig on a plate" now, don't get me wrong, they tasted nice, my wife made a comment that it was as though noah (the ark guy) had written the recipe, as it was two of everything, in a bisque, with some pasta, mine however, again, was nice but when I sent a picture of what I was eating to my mother she asked me if it was a starter and to be fair I wasn't sure if it was or not. We ate, and again, they tasted nice, but it was a question of volume. Once we had finished we asked for the dessert menu, they came but nothing really piqued our interest, and especially for the price of some of them, we proceeded to spend an additional £20 on snacks and ice cream at the Sainsbury's across the road (it was Ben & Jerry's if you were wondering) We have eaten at other restaurants, spending the same amount and not being able to walk out after, yet this place was disappointing, despite its recommendation that we had recieved. Food wasn't bad, spent in excess of £90 for two of us, we were still hungry afterwards. Better places to go it would seem...

Great meal and service was good...my only feedback was we ordered and nice bottle of wine, and it was served in glasses that must have once been owned by Deirdre Barlow, it would be such a nicer experience to have had the fine wine with a fine glass....but very nice food and service to match

Having read the trip advisor reviews we booked here and were looking forward to an excellent meal. Not to be I’m afraid. I ordered the lobster, which in my opinion was over cooked and mulchy. My wife ordered fillet steak medium rare. It had barely been seared and was blue. We didn’t stick around for desert!. Service was average at best.

This is a little gem in Windermere. Home cooked food with elegance at an affordable price. We had ox cheek (melt in the mouth) Lamb shank similarly delicious. To finish a homemade sticky toffee pudding ( not small!) This we shared with an extra dollop of ice cream. Really good value for handcrafted meals.

Francines is one of the very best restaurants I have visited in a long time and I only regret that I live too far from Windermere to make this a regular outing. From the greeting on arrival both Francine and her team are incredibly friendly and informative. Despite my initial disappointment that the Venison Croquettes had sold out my slow cooked pigs cheek soon cheered me up. My main of Daube of beef with or without escargot was amazing and I was pleased that I went with as they were the best I've had outside France. Although full I couldn't resist finishing my meal with a Rhubarb Creme Brulee. I will definitely be returning when next in the lakes.

Our hotel recommended this restaurant so our expectations were high... both had the chicken liver terrine and found it lacked flavour and especially seasoning. Partner thought it was bought in but I was unsure. I had the fish casserole and again little flavour but the shellfish definitely wasn't fresh but frozen from the texture. Wasn't terrible however lacked depth of flavour and seasoning. Pleasant enough evening but wouldn't return

We have visited Lake Windermere four times but this was the first time we actually made it to Windermere. Francine’s is a little jewel. It is a simple yet beautiful restaurant, we were welcomed by Francine herself who was friendly and attentive. The food, well, it was quite simply FANTASTIC!! My husband I both had scallops to start which were presented beautifully and cooked perfectly. Hubby followed with Pig on a Plate which included cheek, belly, crackling and black pudding and I had Venison Bourguignon. Both were mouth wateringly delicious and washed down by a fabulous bottle of Sancerre. The quality of food assured the fact we were going for three courses!! Without further thought we both ordered, a pancetta and a sticky toffee pudding which were yet again simply gorgeous. I do wish we had found Francines on our first trip but I can guarantee you, we will be back!!! Fabulous restaurant, fabulous food, great wine and lovely people. Thank you for a lovely evening.

We were there on October 3rd and git a seat despite having no reservations. The place fills up around 7 so a booking is recommended. Friendly staff, we had a nice time. Two glasses of wine from a nice drinks list were 13.75. Starters were mussels and salmon gravalax (both delicious). Dinner, we both chose the Seafood Casserole (25 each). Lots of mussels, classic, scallops and prawns and a good portion of sea bass on a bed of pasta with a tasty sauce (only complaint was the pasta was hard to pick up as it slid off the fork first bite of us). Excellent food and service. Dinner for two with drinks was 83.25. Highly recommended!

Francine’s is a great restaurant. We were able to book via text message on the day (Saturday) and were so pleased that we were able to get a table. The staff are very friendly although service was sometimes perhaps a bit slow but nothing not to be expected on busy Saturday evening. The food at Francine’s was fantastic. The Escargot (8 of them!) was great as was the seafood casserole which came with a good variety of fish and seafood. The menu also caters for people who don’t like fish and there are many different options. I would 100% return to Francine’s.

We found this restaurant online and really liked the sound of it so pre-booked a table, they offer a texting option to book which is handy. We pre-booked for the following day, which was my Birthday. We arrived and the restaurant is cosy and homely. We were seated and ordered wine, which arrived in good time. We ordered starters, I ordered the Pigs Cheek and my partner ordered the Chicken Terrine. Both tasted really good and were presented really well. For mains, I ordered the Seafood Caserole (I think was it's name) which was a medley of seafood served with Linguine in a Fish Broth. My Partner ordered the steak. Both again, arrived in good time and well presented. My Fish dish was really tasty and portions were very generous. My Partner chose the sticky toffee pudding for his desert, I was too full but had a try and we both agreed it was the best one we had ever tried. Prices were reasonable, albeit slightly more pricey than we would go for if we were casual dining, but for a celebration meal it was well worth it. A must try, I would advise pre-booking as we noticed a few people turning up without a booking and sadly being had to turned away.

Well the short version is JUST BOOK! This is a culinary journey of epic proportions if you like food! Now for the longer version So Bojo announced the new lockdown so needed to move NYE forward. Rang to see if there was a table after reading reviews online, there were 2 left but by the time I’d managed to book a hotel they had gone! Amazingly Francine rang back to say after juggling she could fit 2 people in. How lucky !! Nice friendly welcome and a cosy atmosphere in the restaurant. Firstly the wine list is up there and very reasonably priced. There were wines of the month and a great selection variety to choose from. We went for a bottle of Prosecco to start then were advised the English Sauvignon was a good choice. Indeed it was and I refrained from a second bottle but had a double Amaretto with dessert instead♂️.The food menu is amazeballs, we choose Francine’s for their seafood orientation due to Christmas over indulgence on the meat front! So starters wise had to go for 3 as the choice was fabulous and it was a tough call.. So Clams in pasta, snails and scallops it was . That was after the complimentary canapés that were so tasty too! Ahh those starters did not disappoint. Mains I refrained from ordering 3 but went for a whole lobster in butter, garlic & lemon ( I’m sure that’s what it was) and a Brill !! Well no words , just fantastic , fresh, well cooked and very flavoursome! Many other great choices, meat options too! Then for dessert, the cheese platter was chosen along with a sweeter option of pear and some lovely matching sides. All in all it’s was a fabulous early NYE and we will be back! I hope the lockdown isn’t too long and Francine’s gets to share their culinary love again soon. We will be back and I’m sure it won’t be just the once! Thankyou for a fabulous evening and food journey to die for x

I had the scallops and my husband had the cheese mushroom which was a lot nicer and tastier than my scallops. He then had the lamb shank which was cooked to perfection but lacked a little flavour. I had the seafood casserole which to me was seafood pasta, it was very very nice and enjoyed every bite. My husband then got the creme brûlée which he loved and I had the poached pear which from reviews was the best. It was very nice but nothing to write home about. There was nothing that fell short of very very good, and much that was excellent. How do some cooks get so much flavour out of the ingredients?? I’m sure the back story to ones food is hours and hours of reductions, sourcing brilliant ingredients and a super-skilled kitchen team - who have got these gorgeously presented dishes nailed to a T. I really would be happy to eat anything cooked here. And they take dogs! And guess what all their wine choices were very very good. The Merlot (2019 El Picador) particularly so.

Visited Francine’s last night. We ordered the full Lobster and a steak meal. Lobster was ok.. we got half with the cheese and the other half with the garlic and herb I believe. Felt like the cheese Lobster one was just overpowered with cheese and you could hardly taste the lobster. Comparing it to like a burger and lobster, it wasn’t really on par with that and for £55, maybe expected more. The steak was cooked nicely but wasn’t really impressed by the presentation. We did turn up 30 mins late to the booking due to traffic as we were heading back from Ravenglass. They mentioned they needed the table back by 8pm which was fine. Felt as though we were getting rushed. They kept looking over to see if we were done. The food came out within 10 mins of ordering. It was my wife’s birthday so it was really nice of them to all come out singing with a sticky toffee pudding which we ordered for dessert. For Covid, they had sanitiser at the door, Salt and Pepper at the table (Not sure if they were sanitised). Nice touch as they had cutlery for Children.

Went with another couple tonight. What a lovely evening we have had. I was so excited to dine In francines after looking at all the images on trip advisor. I had escargot and the fish casserole and wow it was a work of art. My husband is a very and I mean very picky eater so I phoned ahead to ask if they could accommodate him and yes they could as they could. So accommodating and phoned back the next day to make sur everything would be fine for him. thank you for such a relaxing evening with great company , lovely food and supporting local business in these hard times. Very well done and we shall see you again

We had to wait several days to get a table. Always fully booked, but was well worth the wait. Food was different and tasted out of this world.

Back for our annual visit when we are in the Lakes. Always opt for the deli sharing board/ platter - stunning food, topped off by the gorgeous Camembert. Decadent but not in the slightest pretentious... love it! Friendly staff - chilled ambience.

Delicious, good quality food and really good service. We had lobster bisque and tomato soup, followed by papperdelle pasta with paramesan, garlic mushrooms and truffle. We had amazing, juicy garlic bread on the side, and the meal was topped off by an immense sticky toffee pudding. Recommend for a special night

Great service and great food. Excellent continental cuisine at a very reasonable price, easily the best meal we had during our stay in The Lakes.

We visited earlier this week and were very impressed by the food, wine and service. Best place we ate all week - definitely book ahead as capacity is reduced due to COVID rules. We had gravadlax and pig cheek to start - both excellent, followed by Pig on a plate and Dover sole special for main - the fish was cooked to perfection. We couldn’t resist the Pear Belle Helene for dessert which was a good decision as the chocolate mousse (more of a ganache) was heavenly! Highly recommended if you’re spending time in or around Windermere.

Booked this on a recommendation whilst visiting Windermere. The food we had was simply outstanding. For main course we both had Lamb Shank and I literally slid the bone out of the meat. It was DELICIOUS. We were looked after all night and didn’t have to wait for the next course, it was there within a minute or two. I honestly can’t understand the negative reviews on here. I love eating out and have been to a lot of restaurants, and this meal was one of the best I’ve ever had.We will be back

We had two tables of four booked for birthday party, food excellent and service great. Would recommend, lot of good dishes. Only one concern was the bullfighting pictures, raised lot of questions from grandkids , 7 & 8 don’t agree with this anyway so lost a star.

As so many previous reviews, we had a lovely evening at Francine’s. 3 of us all had something different and every dish was lovely. Great to be able to book somewhere in Windermere that also welcomes well behaved dogs. Looking forward to our next visit at the end of our holiday.

Going somewhere new is always a bit of a gamble - this wasn’t. In short - Amazing and popular restaurant where everything was just right!-> Book in advance!Staff - Francine called me back and booked us in after placing us on the waiting list (we left it quite late to book our meals our Lakes holiday!). Both front of house staff were great, super friendly, we had a laugh with them and they even told us when our taxi had arrived so we didn’t need to budge from our seat post-meal. We didn’t have to ask for anything and they gave us everything we needed. Food - Shout out to the kitchen staff! Food was so good, even the bread basket was delicious! I had liver to start and seafood casserole, plus creme brûlée - all amazing! Partner had the leek and potato soup, plus Dover Sole (I tried some, super tasty).Atmosphere - Nice and cosy, with everything quietly and safely enjoying themselves. We had a great time, and would not think twice about booking again - thanks Team Francine (incl. Francine)!

Lovely meal and good service! Only slight negative was the speed in which the meals came out, felt a bit rushed to get us out the door for the next servings. Sure that wasn’t the case but it meant we didn’t enjoy it as much. However would recommend the food, very tasty and well presented.

Honestly I 100% recommended you stop looking for places to book ASAP and just ring up and get yourself in here now! Me and my GF and massive foodies and I love my grub more than anyone! I knew we were in for a treat as I had read previous reviews before eating here, however did not expect the level of dining to be for this high of a levelAfter recently finding out my gf has a gluten allergy I thought it would be hard to find somewhere nice which has quality gluten free food, not here! Nearly everything is gluten free and they knew this and mentioned it to us both on arrival, the place doesn’t look much as you step inBut they massive make up for this with there food, service and atmosphere is great! Loved everything about this place from the second I stepped in! BRILLIANT!

Another great meal at Francines. A step above others. Fabulous food. We ordered leek and potato soup, and scallops with black pudding to begin, followed by Dover slip sole, fondant potato, asparagus, beans and scallops for mains. Cooked to perfection and delicious. We try to book here every time we visit the Lakes (we stay at Langdale), and Francines is always top notch. Great service and friendly staff too..music pretty good too!

We loved the decor - unusual, quirky, with the vibe of a local family restaurant in France or Spain. We have been to enough chains! Staff were delightful - efficient and charming. Especially good: guinea fowl; the famous seafood casserole (it’s all about the broth and it was delicious), and desserts (often an afterthought but here really special). Try the chocolate brownie. A good touch to have cold water in carafes, refreshed regularly, too. Thanks, and best wishes for your business during Covid-19.

Francines has been our favourite restaurant for years. The food is amazing and Francine and the staff are great, so friendly and approachable and just make you feel so comfortable and relaxed. We've been a dozen or so times now and have probably tried 80% of the menu and every time you think you know your favourite, you try something else and change your mind and no doubt next time will be exactly the same. If you're anywhere around the Lakes, you simply have to go.

We booked a few weeks in advance as wanted somewhere a little more special to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary when we was visiting for the weekend. We were glad that this is where we chose to enjoy a 3 course meal. Service was great from friendly and helpful staff and we were seated on a table well away from any other diners, so it was a nice relaxed experience. All our food was lovely and we were not disappointed with our choices of goats cheese stuffed mushrooms, steak/seafood stew and sticky toffee pudding/chocolate brownie... perfect with a bottle of pink Prosecco! The tasty canapés at the start of the meal were also a nice touch and the truffles that came with our bill were absolutely gorgeous! Not your average meal so exactly what we was looking for to enjoy a special evening.

We were very lucky in that someone cancelled and we were able to enjoy dinner here. I thoroughly enjoyed the goats cheese as a starter and the taste was exquisite. My main course was from the specials which was the Dover sole accompanied by scallops which again was thoroughly enjoyed. All this was washed down with a bottle of Sancerre which was a variety never tasted before but really would like to enjoy again. First time a cheese board lived up to expectations and really finished an excellent meal. Service was attentive and friendly and all adhered to the new COVID procedures to give reassurance. If I may suggest, do book as it is popular and many people were turned away whilst we were eating there and you wouldn’t want to miss out.

It was highly recommended, so we booked in advance as this was meant to be a special no expense spared birthday dinner for the missus ... couldn't wait.We arrived on time, sitted at a spacious table and our initial waiter was awesome. He took our orders, was very helpful and everything (drinks and starters) arrived on time and all was going great The main course, 1/2 Lobster arrived and was okay. My fish dish wasn't cooked properly because when I mentioned there was blood in the fish, the waitress / manageress response was "They come cooked this way" No effort to ask or offer if I wanted it cooked further or have another dish!Overall, nice starter and helpful waiter but let down by quality of main course and waitress lack of customer service.

Terrible customer service! The young girl at the till clearly did not want to be there. She was huffing and puffing at customers! Yes, it was very busy as yesterday, 15th October was a beautiful autumn day but I would think they would be glad of end of season trade! I could not sit down because they were so busy so opted to ask for take away coffee and cake, only to be told by her 'I'm not doing take away'. Really? The local co-op is closed for a refurbishment and they really could capitalise on that if they employed more capable, less miserable staff! Shocking!! Won't return!

Called here for a takeaway lunch, used them several times before. Service was disappointing to say the least. Not a please or thankyou from the ladies working in the shop - even when I pointed out they'd only charged me for 1 flat white! Previous reviews also highlight the fact that the staff are miserable, they respond but do nothing to address the concerns raised. Also, I would've thought that as u was the only customer in the shop on a very wet day would have been positive for them - obviously not! Not sure I'll return here.

Visited here with my Dad today. Asked for a tea cake and then a scone both not on the menu anymore. I had a bagel with salmon and cream cheese paid over £8 and that was it no sides, no even a bit of salad - didn’t taste great. Dad ordered pancakes in the end 2 tiny pancakes on a dish - still hungry when we left. Not great service either. Disappointed!

Called in for a coffee and snack after our frequent walk along the bay and round back into Arnside. When this first opened I was a little wary as we are used to small intimate tea/coffee shops in Arnside. However this was our second visit and as we entered we were greeted by obviously the front of house guy “David”. Wow does this guy know how to do it Welcoming ,friendly, Northern (always a bonus). Had a lovely coffee and Hubby had a great crisp bacon bun. The vibe in this cafe/restaurant is great., modern but great service. We live quite locally and are encouraged to go in the evening now as well. In our opinion the best restaurants are always about the front of house and Crossfields has it right. Everyone in this place has a great view of our beautiful Morecambe bay.
