Honestly unbelievable selection of beers, friendly staff and customers. I moved to Southend from London and was worried about the transition, but this place is way better than my old London haunts. Highly recommended. Great music too.

Food is amazing. Don't get me wrong it tastes great! But when I order off the main course menue for ÂŁ17.50 that is suppose to be mixed shish kebab, on a bed of rice, with a separate salad and turkish bread, accompanied by 2 pots of sauce..... and they fob you off with your meat in a pitta bread with some salad on the side...... it is not acceptable. Please serve what is stated on your menu and be consistent with this. I will return because the quality of food is amazing. But I expect your service and attitude towards customers to be more consistent with the first time I came in a few months ago. Tonight wasn't acceptable

I regularly drop into the Dyke’s End during solo cycle rides and we’ve occasionally gone there as a couple. We’ve always found it very friendly and with good service and choice of drinks. It’s cosy and rustic inside. The outside garden overlooking Reach green is wonderful. Ignore those negative reviews from 2017. It’s changed hands several times. It did have a rough period but it has now settled down to an unpretentious and friendly local pub in an excellent location.

We had coffee and a slice of Bakewell. We also asked for water. The Bakewell was stale and we told the waiter - we had both eaten approximately half. We ordered a further coffee but the water didn’t show up. They didn’t apologise for the stale Bakewell or even knock one of them off the bill. Expensive and quite frankly overrated.

Enjoyed a takeaway from this place, craving something different after lots of (lovely) meals in Suffolk pubs. Didn't disappoint , very tasty and generous portions. Especially liked the belly pork dish. Not the cheapest for a takeaway but recommended.

Update August 2024 : Sadly, the landlord David Clark is retiring at the end of September 2024. Will whoever takes it over still open as late as he does, creating that nish drinking opportunity. Update April 2022 : The pub is basically back to normal as a proper pub, with no social distancing restrictions etc. Food is no longer served in the evenings, just lunchtime. The pub cat Windy has sadly since died. Currently, I am trying to persuade Landlord Dave to stock some decent low alcohol bottled bitters e.g. Old Specked Hen 0.5%, which knocks spots off the Heineken lager versions. Last orders are now more strictly enforced at 11.30pm most days. Original review during lockdown : I only came by to photograph the post box for Google Maps and found the pub outside all stripped back to the bare cement colour, so an opertunity for a new suite of pub outside photos for Maps. A new fenced-in outside tables layout has appeared to encourage social distancing during the post COVID-19 virus lockdown, ready for the predicted 4th July 2020 reopening. The outside smokers area with heater and awning is being moved from front roadside to the rear. The landlord Dave said the internal woodwork was in the process of being rubbed down, but I wasn't going in there during lockdown, so we will have to wait with curiosity on the pub's final new look.
