The old punch bowl is the place to be at the week days and weekends, the selection of gins is a huge success. They offer great food at a reasonable price and worth your money, the team behind the bar are always helpful. They have a very good sized garden to enjoy a beer in the sun.

We were so sad to hear that this restaurant has now closed permanently. David and his team always took wonderful care of his guests and the food cooked by his lovely wife was always consistent. It is a great shame for hear they will not reopen but we hope to be able to join a trip of theirs in the future. Take care Team Punch Bowl; we will miss you very much.

It is hard to convey in a short narrative just how excellent this place is. From the moment of arrival the hosting is first rate in making you feel welcome. Then the varied menu and extensive wine list makes you anticipate a great lunch or dinner ahead. The food is cooked to order and tried and tested to be the best it can be and generous portions. To finish the dessert trolley reminds you of years past and yearn for them to be copied by others. There is such variety to the offering that I defy you not to find one of these homemade treats to your taste. All in all David the joint proprietor provides an excellent experience which I would not hesitate to recommend to others.

Another amazing Saturday night spent at Our favourite restaurant of 23 years with two friends. As always food was delicious whatever you may order, we have sampled many & the sweet trolley is eye popping. The attention too detail in my opinion is second too none & David is always there to greet you with a smile & the staff are very attentive. I like that you pay a set price for your food & if you were to ask as I do for an additional starter Asparagus to share it’s just ordered & I think the price is very reasonable for a 3 course quality meal. Reading mixed reviews I would strongly recommend if you are looking to visit for the first time definitely go & check out for yourself. Because in 23 years I have never experienced rudeness or had a disappointing meal in the PunchBowl. The restaurant is an hours drive from our home and so worth the drive. Sometimes when people criticise its because there is no pleasing them whatever.

There was 12 of us for christmas sunday lunch on 8th December, we was all crammed on a table where one side of us could not get out to go to the toliet as there was no room to more our chairs and one lady had christmas decorations digging in her head as so close to the wall and 3 large men were put on a small square table at the end of this table and struggled to eat their meals. When the meals were served up, two of us had roast sirloin which was grisly and cut like doorsteps, we had two knifes but struggled to cut the meat, so could not eat it, also we had two yorkshire puddings that were black as been burnt but when we complain about this, we did not even get an apology from the owner, he just said, sarcastically, did we want it sliced thiner. our bill came to £904 so you would think he would be a bit more concerned. We WILL NOT be going back there

Set in the beautiful rural village of High Easter, the restaurant. A listed tudor building, being part of the chocolate box setting you have fairly high expectations when you enter but these were surpassed in high measure. I like a bit of fuss and to be spoilt, who doesn't! As soon as we entered a variety of drinks and cocktails were mentioned, alcoholic and non by one of the bow-tied waiters. We had olives and home-made crisps offered to us at our bar table. Then the manager came over with the menus to take our orders. The choices were varied and of high calibre and enjoyed, I'm a vegetarian and was very happy with my selection. Throughout the meal the service was wonderful and at the end they brought in a trolley abound with wonderful desserts. We passed on coffee and they brought over a tray of sweet treats to finish our meal off. Even though the restaurant was busy we felt we got first class service and no doubt will be back quite soon.

We come here regularly with friends for our pre Christmas treat, we've never been disappointed. This is a traditional English restaurant in the Essex countyside. A glass of champagne on arrival, lovely atmosphere and great food. David is a very good host and makes sure that the drinks are flowing all evening. There is an extensive menu, with good vegetarian choices. The food is locally sourced, fresh, well cooked and nicely presented. Try the fish dishes, they're very good. All the staff are very friendly and polite, nothing is too much trouble. This is a very popular restaurant (always a good sign). Plenty of free parking in the restaurants car park. Highly recommended

Overall our experience was fine, not quite up to the hype the food was nice enough and the staff were very attentive for a busy service. Felt exceptionally sorry for a young family behind us who were subjected to some awful behaviour from the owner. we were in shock at the way he spoke to them and couldn’t believe they stayed for their food hopefully they got a nice discount! He got aggressive telling us that we hadn’t booked a high chair which we had and when we pulled up the email to show him he refused to look at it. He is a disgraceful pathetic man. Avoid this restaurant at all costs. The only upside was that we got our drinks for free which is the least they could do. The roast was ok the meat was good but the rest was very average. Wonderful Sunday lunch, with lots of extras.I have never before been given a fruit bowl and a bowl of chocolate goodies with the coffee I ordered. I was also offered a taster of Brie - as a matter of generosity. The wine list is focussed, superb, and, dare I say cheaper than expected. We went to the Punch Bowl for Sunday lunch at the end of June. It has to be one of the worst restaurant experiences we have had in a very long time. The food was average at best and the service was non existent! To start with there were 4 of us, we were seated and offered drinks, 2 were poured and then the young guy serving disappeared. Twice we asked for the other 2 drinks to be provided the last time was 15 minutes after the first two drinks were poured, we asked David, to be promptly told he had a boy and a sommelier to handle drinks!! In the end he grudgingly provided the drinks himself.3 of us requested Dover Sole off the bone but only one came as requested. The roast potatoes served were burnt beyond recognition, they were black and were inedible. I asked for a half bottle of Chablis but was not offered this just drinks by the glass from a bottle that was already open. The dessert trolley was brought out and there was also the offer of hot rice pudding. One of these was ordered again this was late arriving to the table and the others had finished dessert by the time it came. We were so fed up we did not stay for coffee and asked for the bill. Needless to say we did not leave a tip. We will never go to this restaurant again. The owner is pretentious and is only interested in serving clients who he knows. Then he is sucking up to them!!! The rest he is not interested in, no customer service whatsoever!!

One of many visits. Its a lovely way to spend a sunday afternoon. Its what you would call 'traditional fayre'...but its done really well. The crab starter is always good and the Halibut was stunning. I still cant bring myself to order the belly of pork , which looks like 5000 calories on its own ( has anyone actually ever managed to eat it all?). TheN at the end is a sweet trolley straight out of the 80's . Theres about 20 odd items on it and they are all fantastic ( the key lime pie especially). Theres still the issue of you being crammed in on the table and sometimes you may find you get stuck in the very crammed bar for quite a while after your original booking time before your table is ready- but I will give David the benefit of the doubt here as the service, once at the table , in terms of time/delivery of courses is perfect.

Having read some good reviews we thought we would try The Punch Bowl. It was ‘ok’. A bit dated and reminded me of restaurants I had worked in 30years ago .. including the style of food. To start the service by the owner was attentive but as soon as he realised we were not big drinkers it changed. He also mimicked me when he showed me to the table as I said it was fine and he said was that all I could say. (I really did feel it was just ok) The food was average especially for the £55 ahead. Definitely not fine dining or taste. We wanted to leave a cash tip for the waitress who actually had a bit of personality rather than add it to the optional card payment so only added £5 to the card payment when presented the bill by the owner so we could give more cash on the table so we could be sure the staff got it and the owner literally had a huff when he saw the amount we added to the card and turned on his heels and didn’t speak to us again. We shall not be returning.

Had heard good things about this venue but it seemed to be all puff and no substance. Food was distinctly average (and therefore grossly overpriced); starters better than main course; the hosts spent most of the time trying to push more booze onto us (even though some of us were driving), with the obvious aim of trying to bump up our spend as much as possible. Realised afterwards that we had been overcharged but refund was given promptly.

I was invited to the Punch Bowl for a birthday party and checked out the website first. With the huge range of meat and fish options on the menu, I didn’t have much hope for anything both vegan and tasty for my husband and I. I was wrong. Badly wrong. David is the most extraordinary and wonderful host who takes real pride in his job and does his utmost to make sure that every single guest has the best possible experience. He personally greeted every single visitor at the door with a big genuine smile and lots of enthusiasm. Throughout the night, he made sure to keep an eye on the smooth running of the whole event from going around personally topping up glasses to talking guests through the huge array of food on offer. He had asked his chefs to prepare a separate vegan dish and they had done an amazing job! They made a butternut squash and chick pea curry and rather than making a couple of individual portions, they made enough for every single guest and the aroma alone was enough to make almost everybody have a portion with their dinner. (I checked towards the end of the evening – the gigantic pan was very nearly empty!) David personally came back to ask us how our food was and we told him it was amazing. He then said: “Our customers are at the heart of what we do. They are happy to speak to us and tell us what they want, our job is only to listen and learn.” What an amazing host! So genuinely humble and wiling to learn, making the experience as good as it can possibly be for each guest and their individual requirements. The whole team at the Punch Bowl provided a seamless service which was second-to-none. Warm bread in three different flavours was offered out to start with, even the butter had been cut into heart shapes which was such a lovely and thoughtful touch. Fresh fruit platters were given out to each individual, not just consisting of boring melon and grapes but also hand-cut pineapple, passion fruit and even cherries! I must also mention that David’s wife Penny is an extraordinary lady. Not only was she head chef and had created a dazzling feast for all the guests, but I also found out that she had also handmade each of the flower displays including the large central centrepiece hanging from the ceiling. Both of them were present and working hard right from the first minute until the very end of the night (in the early hours of Sunday morning) Together they make a formidable and ridiculously talented team!Thank you David and Penny. It is so rare to find people who are so experienced and yet willing to try something new. We had the most unforgettable evening at your fantastic pub and would highly recommend it to anyone.

Never in my life have I been spoken to in such a tone in front of other guests in the restaurant. Also witnessed the manager speaking to a young waitress so nastily. I honesty felt awful for her. I booked this restaurant for my mums birthday for a party of 10 on a recommendation.I honestly can not recommend The Punchbowl highly enough. The food was exquisite, David’s hosting was second to none and the venue is beautiful. We had a three course Sunday lunch, with incredible portion sizes and extras of everything. Every single one of us was fit to burst. We then sat outside and had a dip in the swimming pool whenever David brought out some homemade chocolates.Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend and will certainly be going back. The best restaurant I have been to for a very, very long time.Thank you!

We usually book to go to The Punch Bowl on special occasions a couple of times a year. Its a lovely treat as we know we will always get an excellent choice of food which is of very good quality, there is plenty of it and we are always looked after. There is also a good choice of wines available. Today we celebrated a birthday and the menu's for our family had my son's name and birthday celebration on it, which was a very nice touch. We were made to feel very welcome and we weren't rushed. I keep going back and will definitely go back again.

Our first visit to this establishment, will not be the last, would recommend this restraint to anyone, fab food and drink, excellent service and beautiful venue. PS Penny, thanks for the lift home.

DisgustingI am disappointed to write such a bad review as it’s usually not my style however the owners attitude deserves to be mentioned.Such a shame. The venue is beautiful, The food is lovely BUT the owners attitude is the worst I’ve experienced in my life. Having attended my brother in laws wedding at the punch bowl last September, we booked a table for 23 of our family members to celebrate Father’s Day. Having read the bad reviews regarding the owner I put this down to maybe miscommunication between him and all of the diners, as at the wedding I didn’t notice him being rude, in fact we couldn’t get a taxi and he had been so kind as to drive us home to east London and didn’t even charge! Anyhow. Today was a different story!! We had all travelled at least an hour (my dad as far as Mile End E3) and was looking forward to a lovely celebration. The owners attitude on arrival can only be described as disgusting! Rude, arrogant and unacceptable. I put this down to maybe stress - Father’s Day busy day we are a large party etc. However this continued throughout the entire meal. The way he spoke to us throughout the whole meal was not acceptable.I have been lucky enough to travel to many places and to dine in some of the best restaurants in the world and have never been spoken to the way that we were today. We were constantly accused of ordering things that we hadn’t ordered. It appears that the owner loathes children (fair play but maybe make your restaurant adults only!) when asking for a high chair repeatedly we were finally given the response ‘no, stop asking, I’m not the high chair man there are only 2 and they are taken’When allowing our children to play outside we were told to get our children inside and sat down as the garden is not a beer garden. When being repeatedly accused of ordering things that we hadn’t ordered, a chicken roast dinner was served - we had kept it simple and ordered lamb or beef for everyone. When being pointed at and told ‘Chicken?!’ For the fourth time I responded ‘lamb’ I assume he misheard as he attempted to mimic me and repeated ‘NAH’ that was not what I said so I corrected him and replied calmly , no I said Lamb. The way he spoke to us was unacceptable. I can only imagine that he has his own issues/ deep frustrations which I could take an educated guess as to what they are however as this is a public review I guess not the audience. I stepped outside to take some time to gather my thoughts to deliver some constructive criticism when my entire family had had enough and decided to leave. Before we had eaten! We ended up going to a local pub the Angel & Crown who were so accommodating and understanding and had also heard about the attitude of the owner. So all was well that ends well but unfortunately I will not be returning to the punch bowl until it’s under new management. Which can’t be long as I cannot imagine that it will continue trading under this owner with his awful manner.

Went with four other friends for dinner on Saturday evening and we all agreed it was excellent. Friendly professional service and really good traditional food. We had lobster cocktails, dressed crab and fried brie for starters. Chicken Supremes and Chateaubriand for mains. Great wines.Portion sizes were large but the sweet trolley couldn't be resisted. The restaurant may be in a time warp but that is the charm. It is how restaurants used to be and its a great shame more aren't like it these days. We hadn't been for years and it was such a relief that it was how we remembered it.We will definitely return. We found David charming and had the great pleasure of briefly meeting Penelope who was working wonders in the kitchen.

This restaurant is stuck in a time warp, with over thirty years on the clock they need to hang up their boots... It is utter chaos once you leave the serenity of the reception area for drinks on arrival. Yes he is witty, if you think Julian Clarey was. At every turn of the experience they are trying to guide you in the direction of eating to excess, which is an uncomfortable experience these days given the flight to quality rather than gluttony most foodies crave. The food is not great, the vegetables maybe locally sourced but they are over cooked, very stringy beans and more samphire than you can shake a stick at dread all over many of the dishes we chose. The so called sommelier was an utter, joke not knowing the difference between a few Montrachet we asked for his opinion other than, well they are all pretty similar! The waitress reached across us to serve food, without warning and on one occasion spilt a glass of wine over one of us. Made worse by the fact, that she was flapping around trying to sort it out, but same sommelier asked was everything ok? When we explained what had happened he quipped that with such good wine "it must have been refreshing"... You can't really into print what an utterly condescending upstart this chap is, really. When you don't know your cloud you really should wind your neck in. We won't be back and indeed will watch keenly for they next visit they have from any professional critics out there... Bad experience I'm afraid.

A generous glass of lovely champagne to start us off in the bar. Perfectly cooked scallops, halibut and cheese for me, lovely fresh crab, tender fillet steak and the dessert trolley for my husband. With one driving a bottle of wine was not an option but the wines by the glass were extremely good. We will be back!

We haven’t eaten at the Punchbowl for a while but it’s fair to say it hasn’t changed much. It’s a lovely building with good table settings and glassware. The Saturday night we went was very busy and the team were clearly a bit stressed but seemed to cope pretty well. The food relies on good, often local ingredients, cooked simply but well. If you are looking for Michelin style cooking you will be disappointed but if you like good, simple food, you will probably love it. What is extraordinary is the range of wines available. We had an excellent Chassagne Montrachet and a Chateau Pontet Canet, both of which were delicious. Dinner is £50 for three courses and there is a reasonable range of dishes from which to choose. Pudding is from a sweet trolley - now when did you last see one of those?

I really don't know where to begin with this review, 4 of us visited The Punch Bowl on Sat night just gone for a double Birthday celebration meal, firstly we were shown to the reception area where we were served drinks, please beware as the decor is very old and tired and could do with some care and attention, there was no offer of a menu for us to see the costs, and was recommended some pre made cocktails from a Jug, when the bill came later, the price of the pre made cocktails and even a mocktail was more money than I would expect to pay in a bar in the center of London! we ordered the food and was shown to our table which was tucked away in the corner of the restaurant right next to the Kitchen behind a screen, so was a bit of a squeeze, the starters arrived, out of the 4 starters, I would say 2 of us were happy, the mains arrived and all I can say is I could have cooked the meal better at home, the top of the Crispy pork was not crispy it was burnt, the other 2 mains were the Filet steak, one of the them was ok, however the other steak was really chewy and inedible in some places! the vegetables and potatoes were distinctively average, we were then presented with a dessert trolley, which was again average in terms of presentation and taste, after the meal we were lead to believe that Coffee's were part of this all inclusive menu, we were told to have our coffee's away from our table and back in the reception area, again the coffee was completely average, when the bill came, we were in total shock by what we had been charged for the meal and extra's, turns out the Mocktail was charged at £6!! and the less than average coffee's for just under £4 each! when we paid the bill I believe David took our money, he queried that we were only paying the value on the bill and hadn't left a tip! I was so shocked at this point it literally left me speechless after the experience we had just had, he expected to receive a tip and even verbalized this! I would not recommend this restaurant I'm afraid and will definitely not be going back.

This time a family visit for Sunday lunch with parents, one in a wheel chair and teenage sons.Being an old premise (not sure how old) it is not in itself particularly wheel chair friendly but staff willing to help and seating arranged for comfort and easy access to toilets. We deliberately arrived and the restaurant was lovely and quiet so we could chose our meals and get seated very much in our own time. The service was good and food tremendous. My mum has a small appetite but the 'junior' portions ordered seemed as big as the normal sized portions. I have not seen her eat so much in a couple of years, which says a lot for the food.We were not fussed around but given the right amount of attention to ensure things ran smoothly. The food almost defeated two teenage boys with large appetites but they still managed 'a bit of each' from the dessert trolley. The lunch was at a leisurely pace and it was mid afternoon before the restaurant started to fill up and we decided to leave. It is a unique place with a unique atmosphere and way of doing things, long may it continue.

No puedo esperar a volver. Gracias.

As opposed to most restaurants of this standard you would never leave hungry, great food well served with a sence of humour.

We had a good time at the restaurant, nestled away from wedding festivities elsewhere on the grounds. The wait staff were both friendly and attentive. The cream tea was good and we were indulged without the usual reservations requirement which was appreciated. Our sandwiches were fresh with tasty fillings and the scones warm and generously sized. However for the price we felt the trio of desserts was incredibly basic. A real shame since the rest was so enjoyable.

We had a fabulous Sunday roast here today, can’t complain about anything. The staff are friendly and welcoming and super attentive. We had two courses which was very well priced for the quality of food. One thing we would like is to bring back the scotch egg starter please.

Came yesterday for a Sunday Roast. Poor quality food. The meat was like it was from a foil tray type of roast. Not proper Turkey breast meat. Frozen roast potatoes. Veg were disgusting and had a twang to them. Probably frozen . Cabbage was yuk. Parsnips hard and tasteless. The best thing was the yorkshire pudding. I wont be returning again. We gave it another try after saying we wouldn't return earlier this year. I had been coming to this pub for years but over the last year has gone right downhill. Don't waste your money. What a shame

Used this eatery when staying at the Premier Inn Saffron Walton a couple of years ago and there were no complaints then but things have changed. When we went to get our table at 7.30pm we were told that we weren’t being rushed but we need to get our orders in before 7.40pm or we wouldn’t be able to eat anything as the kitchen closes at 8.00pm. Once seated we were then presented with both the menu and a list, equally as long, of items that weren’t available on the menu. By this time we only had 8 minutes on the clock to decide whilst cross-checking the menu! The food itself was pretty average. After the meal we went to have one more drink in the bar. Once sat down with our drinks we were quickly told it was last orders, soon after that, around 5 minutes, all guests had to leave the bar. The England game was switched off half way through, maybe not a bad thing, and the door was practically slammed behind us as we were turfed into the lobby with the remainder of our drinks. I realise this is not the staff’s fault, they are only enforcing the rules but it all felt very rushed and stressful. Other guests were clearly annoyed by this. On the whole I think the opening hours could be handled better and something needs to be done about the lack of options, whatever the reasons, it was embarrassing.

Quality of food and service are top class and fixed price menus are great value for money! Sunday lunch is excellent and is good value for the quality of food produced
