One of our favourite places to eat in Castle Douglas, if not our outright one. Proper authentic Italian food of really high quality, and they know how to entertain our 4 year old every time he's in. The fact they remember him is even better. Cannot recommend more highly.

We have been here a few times in the last 3 years for my birthday lunch. At first I was disappointed that the menu had changed but upon eating my choice of steam pie, I was no longer disappointed. The food is immaculate. Beautiful top quality and very ample potions. The service from the lovely staff is impeccable and I cannot recommend this place enough. A lovely warm welcome on a wet cold windy day. Thank you.

Having driven for 3 hours to get to the Horseshoe Inn on our way to Edinburgh from England, much of it across country lanes partially covered with snow and ice , we eventually arrived much later than our booking , at the restaurant which was highly recommended by our Scottish Friends The staff were great and made us feel very welcome. Prior to ordering our meals, we were informed that some of the menu was not available , having run out. No problem , 3 of us adjusted our choices, however my wife, who only eats duck or chicken , with only Duck on the menu , chose the duck, but as usually, well done. To which the chef apparently refused to cook the duck ‘ well done ‘ even after 2 times requesting this and , assuring them if this resulted in the duck being a little tough, we would be happy as my wife will not eat pink duck. They insisted that the chef would NOT COOK A DUCK ‘ WELL DONE. This happens to us every now and again and we understand the reasoning for this reluctance, however we have NEVER HAD A TOTAL REFUSAL, EVEN IN A MICHELIN STAR RESTAURANT IN TOKYO , which got it just right recently at the 3rd attempt. Consequently, my wife had to make do with a starter and a salad. This was totally unacceptable, but it was the only choice on the menu she would eat. It was however nicely prepared and appreciated. I had the Ribeye medium rare which was excellent and our companions enjoyed their food as well. My marks therefore take my wife’s disappointment into consideration. So the location is great, the staff which we met was excellent and helpful, however the Chef , who is excellent at preparing our meals, NEEDS TO REMEMBER WHO PAYS THE BILL. What happened to ‘ the customer is always right even if they’re wrong? In summing up, the place is great, the staff and food are excellent as long as the Chef agrees with your choice of how you want it prepared.

I visited Thomas Tosh last week while passing through Thornhill. Delighted to see that my favourite lemon and raisin cake is back on the menu, and that as always, the coffee, service and general atmosphere is good as ever! Thanks again to the staff, will be back next time I’m in the area

An accidental find when we’d missed lunch opening hours elsewhere. Needed something Coeliac-friendly, and DD did so much more! Could be in Prague, Krakow, or ….well, anywhere bookish and bohemian, DD is quirky but not kitsch. Coffee is good, mezze is great, and cake quality is very very good…and almost everything is gluten-fee (I could share a mezze platter with my gluten-loving g wife. All the cakes except one were gf). Slightly hidden away off the end of the High St, prices are decent, and its a peaceful space you could step into briefly or waste an afternoon in. Really liked the staff too! Perfect excuse for a wee trip from Edinburgh.

My wife and I visited for lunch while staying in Port Patrick. The house itself is relaxing, quiet and full of charm. We had the 4 course set menu which was divine. Soup to start, then salmon! To die for, then venison and cheese for after. Great wine selection, port and coffee. If you want something special and memorable then this is the place to go.
