The food was great. The portions were huge. Husband ordered chicken and was served sides they were enough for a table of 4! Owner is an acquired taste, borderline rude, but done people seem to like him. Will probably go again when we are back in Dumfries if we catch it open (open Thur/Fri/Sat)!

I’m not quite sure where to start with this as I’ve never experienced such poor service in a restaurant before but I’ll try. So we were a party of 10 celebrating my mother in law’s 60th. My partner isn’t from Dumfries and Galloway so just told me he’d looked this place up and decided to book it. I hadn’t really heard of it and had initially wanted to go to the Bank but after looking at reviews of Truffles and seeing people speak highly of the food I thought let’s give it a try. I noticed many speaking about how awful the owner was but I thought surely he can’t be that bad if people are still going and people are still leaving good reviews. How wrong I was! Another warning sign I should have noticed was that we initially booked in for the Friday but changed to the Saturday and they were able to accommodate that easily last minute so clearly aren’t busy. We were running 15mins late. I called to let them know and apologise. The waitress who answered the phone was accepting of this and said it was ok. On arriving the owner ‘greeted’ us. I again apologised and he shrugged his shoulders but let us in. We all sat down and he immediately came to ask us if we wanted drinks. We were looking at the drinks menu and discussing what we wanted when he repeated in a slow and aggressive tone DO.YOU.WANT.ANY.DRINKS??! It was extremely awkward. My dad asked about red wine and he used his notepad to lean over my dad and aggressively hit the menu and point to a wine on the list. We ordered drinks which included 2 pints of beer. As he walked away we all felt very uncomfortable and decided we did not want to spend our money in such a venue when the atmosphere was cold and aggressive. We all decided to leave. My partner spoke to the owner letting him know his front of house manner was appalling and that we’d be leaving. He said he didn’t “understand people” and that he expected us to pay for the pints that had been poured. I gave him a £20 note and he aggressively gave it back to me, stating he had no money in the till to give me change and swiftly snatched the pints back and put them behind the bar. We then left and were politely accommodated in the Bank next door (which I would highly recommend). As we left, the waitress apologised on our way out. I actually felt bad leaving her in such a cold and horrible environment. That owner should not be front of house. He is rude. He is right, he doesn’t understand people and has no people skills whatsoever. I would avoid this place like the plague and go next door to the Bank! (The one star is for the waitress who we had to leave behind)

Came for dinner, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was faultless, delicious, fresh and authentic, the restaurant itself is beautiful and unique. The only thing that let our experience down was the lack of warmth in the servers, and the owner himself seemed a tad hostile and fed up. Would definitely go back, although it would be nice to be made to feel a bit more welcome next time!

Dreadfully rude boss and also duped us on bill 😡 My young 20 year old daughter ordered Capri salad for her starter .. waitress brought a bowl of leaves and asked who had orders ‘mixed salad’. My daughter explained it was the wrong salad and the polite waitress took it away and said she would change it. Then … boss John appears and aggressively challenged my daughter saying he always checks an order and did she not hear him??? She calmly told him she had pointed to the menu but he continued by telling her that the salad she ordered took a long time to prepare. She asked to have no starter to save us all waiting. He stomped off with no words. We ordered steaks for main and were told were served with potato dish and veg. Got asked if wanted chips as a side. We asked if could have chips instead of potato dish. Rudely told ‘no it’s potato dish, but you can order them as a side’. Lovely steaks came - with a side of mash??? Really?? Asked for bill - 10 glasses of wine. We had 5. Two extra charges we had no clue about. Asked him to explain - ‘our glasses are 175ml small and you had 5 large glasses so we do two 175 in the same glass’ Total rip off and we were scammed on the wine. He even told us the glasses are filled to the top??? What wine glass of 250ml has enough space for an extra 100ml?? We paid full bill however and told him his manner had been awful to my daughter. Worked out we were £15 scammed in drinks when we got home. Not interested he was and this was appalling behaviour towards any of his customers, never mind a young 20 year old. Furious and will never be back.

Can not fault the food, it was really good. However the manager in the place creates an awkward atmosphere, with the staff doing their best to work around what must be a difficult culture. The menus have a wine list on the back, but we were haughtily told not to use that one. We were also told of the tapas on the menu “we don’t do that anymore”.

Found this place by accident whilst looking for somewhere to eat early evening. A different restaurant had been recommended to us by a local shopkeeper. After looking at the other restaurants menu, we preferred what we saw at Truffles. We were a little uncertain as the entrance to the restaurant is slightly hidden. However, the proprietor spotted us and invited us in. The restaurant itself is in a very nicely decorated cellar type roof. The proprietor told us that it had once been a wine bond. We were there in time for the early bird menu, which offered two courses for £9.95. The menu offered a good range of starters and main courses. At the price, car were expecting small portions, this was far from the case, I had soup of the day and my wife creamy garlic mushrooms with garlic bread. Both were substantial portions. To the main course we both had chicken with a creamy garlic and mushroom sauce. They were both good size portions of chicken. This course came with a dish of mixed steamed vegetables and a dish of sliced potatoes cooked with cheese. All the food was cooked well, tasted really good and came very hot. We were made to feel really welcome and all the staff we came across were very friendly. It was a great find. If we come to this area again, we would certainly book in advance to make sure we could get in. Can't recommend it enough. Give it a try yourself.

Starters were garlic mushrooms and muscles both very tasty, main course we had lamb rib meat of the bone with mashed potatoes and mint sauce ( had to ask for mint sauce? ) . The other main was a nice fish dish . Food was cooked perfectly but with five pints of beer the bill was pricy at £156

After months of my partner begging me to go i finally gave in and let him take me after him going with his work colleagues and manager and receiving exceptional service we received the opposite as a couple, i was moaned at for not knowing which gin i wanted despite having no drink menu on the table we both ordered rare steaks his being cooked medium and mine med/well i then argued that it was far to overdone and i refused to pay for such a badly cooked steak and was made to feel like a absolute idiot by being pulled to the front of the restaurant and him blaming the light and apparently i didnt know what a rare steak looked like despite being what i have 9/10 times i go out for my dinner, i then overheard him call out a woman who ordered chips and gravy and not chicken which was the meal they tried to give her and he said he disnt sell gravy despite fact it was on my plate, i was giving a new steak which was blue and i was forced to cut and accept it which made me feel so uncomfortable and the way i was spoken was absolutely disgusting it will definitely be my first and last time visiting the restaurant and despite the 2 lovely girls waitressing and checking everything was okay the man in charge who i presume was owner was the biggest **** ive met in my life, worst customer experience ive ever had.

Can’t deny the quality of food, it is excellent with a good choice of menu. There was only 2 waitresses on so the poor girls were run of their feet, however they were 2 of the most polite friendliest girl’s I’ve come across. There was also a man serving & taking orders who I assume was in charge, but clearly couldn’t cope with a busy restaurant, got orders wrong, and constantly shouting at those poor girl’s, the way he spoke to them was disgusting, I wonder if he has a young daughter & how he’d feel if someone spoke to her in that way .

I came to this restaurant on a quiet Thursday night after looking at the reviews on TripAdvisor. I am SO GLAD I did. Although the restaurant was quiet there was still a warm ambience with the subtle lighting and curve of the old (over 300 years) cellar walls. I chose the Sole Ecosse off the menu and WOW... It was perfect. Served with creamy seasoned mash potatoes and wonderful, perfectly cooked seasonal vegetables. You HAVE to try it! Desert was sadly not made by the talented chef but nevertheless delicious. My only regret was that I did not discover this gem of a restaurant sooner. I would highly recommend it. Not only was the food superb but the service was perfect and John was charming. Until next time.....

A compact dining area in a sandstone arched vault like room. Dimmed lighting gives it a lovely atmosphere. The menu was varied enough for most pallets. Had peppered tomato soup starter followed by a traditional Lasagna dish which was very nice, be sure you order your side dishes as the menu is not clear that the mains come with no side dishes unless you order and the waitresses don't always ask. Toilet facility are very small for one customer only downstairs, but found out later there is a bar upstairs with more facilities.

I visited this restaurant for a friends birthday meal last Saturday. As we arrived we were advised that there were no cask ales , the bottled beers were also served warm. The starters took 1 hr and 15 mins to arrive when the restaurant was only half full. 2 people in our party ordered steak blue and rare and they were both served well done. When we spoke to the owner owner he argued that it was the light and the chef wanted us to view the steak in the light of the kitchen. My steak was rare and I could see it was that so the light was of no relevance but the owner did not listen. We were told several times that the customer is always right and that he wasn’t bothered if we didn’t come back. A simple acknowledgement of the error and a replacement blue steak would have been the best solution. Each member of our party tried to smooth things over with the owner and each if us realised he was not listening so walked out.

Have been before and I would always recommend truffles to anyone. The service is good and the food even better. Had the Barbary duck starter and it looked fantastic on the plate very well presented. The slices of duck were beautifully cooked and the salad was just what it needed to compliment it. The caramelized onions on the side were a nice touch as well. I had the sirloin steak on the bone for my main and that was cooked exactly how I asked for it. It was a great steak as always and I honestly can say I have never had better steak than the times i have been to truffles. Was also served with healthy portions of vegetables and potatoes and I had a lovely parmigiano sauce with it. My fiance had tomato and pepper soup for starter which was excellent and the chicken supreme for main with the Al Pepe sauce and it was well cooked and very tasty. We will definitely be going back.

The entrance, in Bank Street, gives no clue to the interior, but the restaurant itself, in a former tobacco merchant's cellar, is comfortable and cosy. The service was very attentive and the food was very good indeed. I would go so far as to say that the paella is possibly the best I have ever tasted, and I have travelled extensively in Spain. I had the chargrill chicken ( the sauce, is absolutely mouthwatering) , and partner had the steak.. starters soup and the prawns wow, I couldn’t fault anything we had... what a find, if you can get into this place you have to go. And the staff are lovely too!!.. And it’s so cosy, we will definitely be back ..

We eat here whenever we can! Food is absolutely amazing and importantly always consistent, never a bad meal. The steak is by far the best in town and a great selection of wines. Highly recommend

We first found Truffles the day before our wedding back in September 2012 and have been back every anniversary since and any time in between we can get to Dumfries. This is the most welcoming place with amazing food John and his staff are awesome and always make you feel welcome. We were there over the Easter holidays and a lady was complaining about her food and was making all sorts of accusations to the staff and as John was away that weekend may I say the staff were fantastic at handling the situation and I can only say after she left the rest of us in the restaurant had a ball. We all started talking to each other and saying how good our food was and had a wonderful evening. Will definitely be back again in September in not sooner if we get the chance.Fabulous and thanks

What a great find this restaurant was, just passing through Dumfries and wanted something tasty and ‘not’ pub grub. We found this restaurant through Trip Advisor and decided to trust the reviews. They didn’t do it justice, what a quirky, homely environment you walk into,...

It's a great shame that this place will be closing shortly because the food and the staff are so lovely! Super according to a coeliac and went above + beyond in everything. Best of luck to Mr Pooks and all those involved in this little gem.

One of our favourite places to eat in Castle Douglas, if not our outright one. Proper authentic Italian food of really high quality, and they know how to entertain our 4 year old every time he's in. The fact they remember him is even better. Cannot recommend more highly.

Omg this place is top class!! Previous Michelin Star, they haven't dropped their standard. 2 or 3 course set menu, the menu had a map of Scotland titled The Larder, showing where their ingredients are sourced. I had the best Cheese Soufflé I've ever had, large for a starter and so cheesy tangy. Hubster had the salmon marinated in beetroot, on the small side but delicious. Beautifully rare lamb for main with a filo pastry black pudding, and a lamb samosa, so minty, amazing accompaniments and presentation. Hubster upgraded to a Rib Eye, said it was the best he'd ever had. Chef wasn't keen on serving it blue, but it was perfect. We were full really but couldn't resist the dessert menu. White chocolate rice pudding... omg just the best! And sticky toffee pudding. We'd mistakenly booked a bar table, and couldn't understand why we couldn't move to the restaurant as there were free tables, but the service was excellent, attentive and friendly. It was all amazing, thank you guys 👏
