This is the restaurant review (there is a separate page for the hotel review). We were delighted to pay a first visit to this rather special place, its secluded and beautiful location befitted the tranquil and refined luncheon we experienced. Impeccable and memorable food. We noted more casual bar food also available. Booking essential.

Found this lovely hotel as took an unplanned visit to Portpatrick and just found here on line. What a find! The setting is beautiful even on a day you couldn’t see much due to fog! But very welcoming and the bar area was so relaxing could have settled in for the afternoon! Food was first class we had the soup which was accompanied by delicious bread. Then I had quiche and again every component on the plate worked brilliantly together hubby had catch of the day which was cod and it was beautifully cooked and presented couldn’t resist desert and glad we did perfect! Tea and coffee all great service warm and friendly we will be back for the restaurant menu next time although the bar lunch may become a regular trip?

Stayed for a three night Christmas break with my husband and spaniels. What a special place! The house and setting are beautiful but as always it's the quality of the staff that makes the difference. From the moment we drew up outside and were met by Sean who came out to welcome us and help unload we knew it was going to be great. The chef is excellent and having been asked about dislikes before we came I was impressed that my main course one day was altered slightly to accommodate without me even realising until I started eating it. Great attention to detail. The wine list is stellar and a source of great temptation for the connoisseur but plenty of choice for everyone. The addition of The Cove provides a great spot when the weather is good. I only managed a coffee on sunny blustery Boxing Day but it was lovely to sit by the waves and one of the staff happily put their coat on to bring it out. The housekeeping team were organised to attend to your room in the morning and the evening whilst you were eating so they never disturbed you...again attention to detail that makes the difference. There are lots of much grander places that could learn a lot from the team at Knockinaam. It's easy to see why many of our fellow guests were regulars. There was no organised Christmas programme , thank goodness, but a few nice touches. Champagne before lunch, a gift of a book and home made chocolates were thoughtful and tasteful. It's just great.

My wife found this when looking for a place for us to spend our wedding anniversary. It sounded good on paper. It was a long and tedious drive for us though and I wasn’t sure it was worth it. I was totally wrong! This place is superb and well worth any drive! The setting is great-it has its own beach and there is a small patio where you can sit and there is a heater there too if you need it. There’s a nice lawn in front of the hotel too where those with dogs took them for a walk. The rooms are all different and all well appointed with their own en suite. The costs of the rooms reflects the size of the room and not the facilities. If you are tall like me (6ft 2) I wouldn’t go for one of the rooms in the roof as the coomb ceiling is a pain. However the thing you go there for is the food and that is sublime! It is a set menu in the evening which reduces waste and helps control costs. You get 7 courses, all quite small , but at the end of the meal you are adequately fed but not full. We were there for 3 nights and had a different meal every night. All the dishes were superb but we had mushroom soup one night and it was the best soup I have ever tasted! In fact it was one of the best foods I have ever tasted! The breakfast is very good indeed and you can order whatever you like from the menu which is very comprehensive. I found that set me up for the whole day and I didn’t need a lunch. I must also mention the wine. The wine list is very comprehensive with some difficult to come by wines in it too like Chateau Musar. On 2 nights we went with the wine pairing list which I thought was very good value, especially the cheaper of the 2 lists we had every night. The hotel is a good centre for seeing things in the local area and , despite going in November we found things to occupy ourselves for the 3 days we were there. They have various themed weekends too which sound brilliant. But the hotel is so good it is worth going to anytime. We will certainly be back.

A beautiful setting and very peaceful. The food is excellent and the dining room not too large. Sadly on the day we went the staff were trying to serve the Barbeque area and the dining room which meant that the service was not what it should have been. We will be back and hopefully the service will be as it used to be.

After 50 minutes the lunch arrived .. the bread on sandwiches were stale , the tea was stewed , the waitress was surly .. all in all a poor effort .. a hotel that needs to work on customer service , On leaving the staff sniggered at us for accepting a poor quality offering

We visited Knockinaam on recommendation for our anniversary lunch. Despite dismal weather the location is stunning, if a little difficult to find due to lack of signs and overgrown vegetation in the way of existing signs. Ample parking but again poor signage at the main entrance door which was closed and looked like all the other doors on the property. Once inside, the service was excellent, with friendly helpful staff. We had a delicious lunch from a set menu, and a lovely bottle of wine from their extensive list. However, the toilet facilities, or lack of them, really let this place down. For a Michelin rated restaurant and hotel, there were only two toilets, one on the ground floor and one upstairs. Unfortunately, both are unisex. I went to use the ground floor toilet, walked in, saw the mess on the floor, the toilet seat which was up and the smell and turned around again. I did not go upstairs. I do not see any reason why a big hotel only has one toilet on the ground floor. If the staff also use this then there is no excuse for it to be left in such a state. It reflects badly on the place if no care is taken in keeping it clean and useable. This location is not a young and trendy club with a shortage of space, which might necessitate such requirements. Personally, I am reluctant to use unisex toilets, unless desperate. I am sure that I am not alone in my opinion. Unfortunately, this will prevent us from coming back.

This is such a great restaurant - more than a restaurant, it creates a magical experience. From the daily special cocktails created with love from local produce, to the wonderful set menu with gorgeous dishes such as chicken in Madeira sauce, beetroot risotto, and panna cotta all with a perfect wine flight, followed by coffee and petit fours by the dramatic Scottish coastline wrapped up in blankets on heated seats. The staff were so friendly and helpful and really outstanding service. Truly wonderful and a very special place! Well worth the money and highly recommended.

Fantastic attention to detail. Great waitress went out of her way to assist me and to make my evening special. Waiters both very good too. Food was incredible. Single menu. Honestly nothing I would have chosen at a restaurant ordinarily but all of it was superb. The cod dish was my favourite (I never order cod!), closely followed by a tomato dish and a sorbet. I'll definitely be recommending Knockinaam to friends.

We have just returned from a break at the Knockinaam Lodge. From the moment you arrived until the moment you left, nothing was too much hassle. The staff were warm, professional, consistently attentive, without ever feeling like it was intrusive or someone was always watching you. We stayed in the Churchill room which was a stunning room and the room was beautiful with really lovely views too! Our meals, were a culinary delight. Each course complimenting the previous one, creating a fantastic symphony. At the end of the meal we were left full, but not that stuffed feeling that leaves you uncomfortable. The grounds were beautiful too! Even the cool September grey and drizzle couldn't diminish this country gem!

The welcome we received on arrival was lovely and were taken over to be shown around and get some useful info. We had our 14 year old Springer Spaniel with us and boy did he just love his “private” garden and beach! only worry he would “retrieve” one of the hens but thankfully didn’t! There are shovels dotted around the grounds and this works well for flipping pooh into the rough .. much better than loads of bags! The views from every room spectacular and the little deer come right down to the edge of the lawn to feed. Sounds idyllic well it is and we will certainly return.

Shingle Lodge stands at the opposite end of a private beach to the hotel and looks straight out into the sea. I don't normally review Michelin starred restaurants. If you've got a star, do you really need my endorsement? This is in reaction to discovering that they have lost their star (OK, so I'm not altogether up to date). We live in Bucks, in an area dripping in Michelin stars. In 2015 and 2016 we had been to several starred restaurants and come away thinking so what.Last September we stayed at Knockinaam Lodge. Five dinners later our faith in Michelin was restored. Not one course we didn't enjoy, with those little variations and combinations that add the fun element and yet managing to prevent it being too much for those staying several nights. Add good, friendly service and the scenery and you've got a winner - one of the better one star restaurants we've been to. Except, apparently not.So, this is just to say don't be put off by the loss of the star. This is excellent food delivered with panache and imagination. The informal, welcoming family atmosphere is thrown in for free.

We were strongly advised to stay overnight at Knockinaam Lodge when travelling back from Northern Ireland to Scotland. It's a gem of a place if you are looking for peace and quiet, a delightful setting down a long private drive, delicious Michelin starred food and exemplary service. It's also utterly dog friendly, allowing our labradoodle into our room - the Churchill Suite, as used by the man himself when meeting Eisenhower for secret war-time discussions. Ask to be seated in the window (they take turns). We enjoyed everything on the menu. It was fresh, tasty and creative. We had breakfast and dinner there (stayed 3 nights). Each member of staff had clearly noted the requirement and were exceptionally discreet but highly efficient. The food served started in the bar over pre dinner drinks with canapes. Wine decanted and topped up appropriately during the course of the meal. Chefs surprise preceding starters were delicate but so full of flavour! The 4 courses which followed were beautiful to look at, tasty to eat and light enough that you did not leave a single morcel! Dessert - you can choose or go for cheese. This Lodge is just south of Portpatrick somewhat off the beaten track. It was apparently used by Churchill to meet with the chiefs of staff due to its isolated location. It is in a wonderful position between two rocky outcroppings with a lawn going down to its own little isolated beach. Unfortunately it poured rain when we were there. It is a large old house with several stairways and rooms off in different directions. I had the impression most of those at the restaurant were also staying overnight given the location. Dinner is a set menu which means that everyone is served the same thing, which we found surprising for such a distinguished premises. The main entree that night was salmon which was well prepared but quite ordinary and similar to what one might do at home or in any run of the mill restaurant. The other aspects of the meal showed the kitchen off a little more but we still left with a sense of the experience being not very special. For the cost of the meal we had hoped for a main course that was more interesting to but such is the risk when the restaurant chooses to limit choice in this fashion which was known to us before booking.

Great food. Tasting menu just the right quantity of food. Highlights: slow roasted beef, yummy. Asparagus soup with truffle oil. Grape juice to cleanse palate, freshly squeezed. They used 2 kilos of grapes for the 18 diners. Very attentive staff. See also my hotel review.

A nostro parere nessuna nota stonata. I prezzi .sono abbastanza elevati ma in linea con il servizio.

We went expecting a michelin star experience. Does this restaurant still have a Michelin star? Surely not. Started well in the lounge with crisps and olives. Nice, if unremarkable, tiny portion of salmon mousse and then through to the restaurant. Began with a little ball of something with goats cheese in it, with a kind of sweet marmaladey relish. It was nice enough, I'm not a huge fan of goat's cheese, so I thought it was just a matter of taste. Next was a portion of Turbot in a fruity emulsion. This was rather good, and got our hopes up. Next was an ordinary kind of thin soup, tasting vaguely of leeks, and described as having 'wet' garlic in it. I heard a fellow diner ask about this and was told it meant the garlic wasn't dried! Okay, it's a taster menu, and the soup's all right and not too filling so it's all fine. Then they bring us a liqueur we didn't ask for, that wasn't on the menu. We don't drink alcohol, and had already refused the champagne and were drinking water with our meal, so one would think they might ask.... So they take away the liqueur and bring us some nice grape juice. Then spoil it by trying to take it way before I've finished drinking it. This is where I start to see the funny side and give up in the idea of a gourmet experience. The main course arrives. Duck with red cabbage and haggis. The duck is fine, a bit rare for my taste, but fine. The cabbage is ordinary. A ball of haggis in batter gives me the giggles. It tastes like something from the local chippy, flaccid and greasy and utterly absurd served with the duck. This course is followed by a rhubarb tart which would be unremarkable if bought by the slice in a local supermarket. The vanilla ice cream was ordinary and half melted. The cheese board was unremarkable. The staff were pleasant enough, but seemed a little afraid, and carrying out a parody of fine dining. When I asked for our coats I was pointed to the coat hooks near the doorway. A beautiful location, but knockinaam could not be described as fine dining.

Hotel: We stayed in the ‘South’ room at the Knockinaam Lodge which was spacious as was the bathroom and had views out onto the private beach. I chuckled when we later in the evening retired to our room to find that electric blankets had been switched on to warm our bed. Since it had been very windy and chilly all day it was a very welcome move and it was lovely getting into a toastie bed. Restaurant: Before dinner we had pre dinner drinks in one of the lounges and shown the wine list and set menu. The canapés of lamb kofte and smoked salmon mouse were served in the lounge. I attach the menu with photos for those who eat with their eyes as well. The food was tasty and the staff was attentive without being obstrusive. If we lived close by it would be a perfect local resto and at £58 for the tasting/set menu it is good value. In the morning we had the full scottish breakfast which was well cooked and set us up for the rest of the day.

Old fashioned, miniscule undercooked portions that we thought (hopefully) had gone out of fashion. No choice of menu. Very expensive drink. The taste of the food was sometimes excellent but things like frothy soup (my wife says it looks like someone had spat in the soup as in the last Black Adder series) were difficult to pallet and frankly serving a main course with a very small piece of meat accompanied by a pea pod, a green bean and (no kidding) two brussel sprout LEAFS must be taking the ****.The serving staff were excellent, attentive without being obtrusive but the food was most certainly not to our taste and expensive.

We ate here on the 31st of August for our 2nd anniversary. Although we had originally booked for the evening, there was unfortunately a mix up meaning we were booked for the Friday evening. Because we were celebrating our anniversary we really wanted to eat on the Saturday. The staff were very apologetic and suggested if we had lunch they would offer us a great table. We arrived for lunch and were not disappointed. The setting is stunning and as we were the only diners they essentially gave us a private dining experience. The experience was fantastic; stunning food, wine and views. One of the best Michelin starred tasting menus we've ever had and the service was impeccable! We decided to walk back to Portpatrick from the lodge with the dog and walk back in the morning to fetch to collect our car. So glad we did as the walk is absolutely stunning! We found ourselves thanking our luck for the mistake which lead us to having a very special lunch, fantastic! Also, the young waitress that was being trained was brilliant. She expertly handled the private dining and made us feel very comfortable.

Just back home after a three day stay in the hotel, only booked for two but enjoyed it so much decided to stay an extra night. The food was of an excellent standard from the breakfast, afternoon tea and evening meal. The countryside and views are not to be missed. The staff were all very helpful and courteous always there for you without being overbearing. Hope to visit again very soon, thanks to you all

I have eaten here many times and have only ever had one poor meal, the last time we were here at Easter. I am delighted to say it was back up to its usual high standard. The set menu sounded a little dull, - cream of tomato and basil soup, cod, roast chicken and chocolate tart, but this belies how delicious and modern everything was. The soup had the perfect complexity of acidity and sweetness along with a touch of cream. Cod isn't sustainable so I asked for a substitute and was served crispy skinned moist salmon instead. The roast chicken was beautifully presented. Although everything was excellent up until this point, the best was yet to come. To describe the pudding as chocolate tart does it no favours. Instead of pastry the cup was crisp biscuit and the dark chocolate filling was soft, warm and totally luscious served with a ball of ice cream. My companions choose cheese, all of which were unusual and superb.Instead of the usual white wine, we opted to have the house rose which complemented the meal perfectly. The service was also excellent - right from pre lunch drinks to paying the bill, it was friendly yet fast and efficient. We were the only people in for lunch but far from feeling awkward we were made to feel we could pretend to live in this lovely house.I am so glad we decided to risk lunch here again as it was truly excellent and look forward to returning.

We stopped by the Lodge on a coastal walk from Portpatrick. The sun was shining and were were looking forward to a 'scone on the lawn'. We weren't disappointed... we ordered a high tea and it was beautifully presented in a silver tea set. The jam was delicious with real clotted cream on the side. We ate whilst looking out to sea from the seating area next to the private beach... sublime! The lady serving was very nice also.

When an 89 year old describes a meal as 'pretty ordinary' you know there is something wrong. We have eaten here very well on so many occasions that we felt confident in inviting family. I can understand that Easter Sunday may be seen as a time where families gather and want traditional food but surely they didn't need to steep so low as offering a set menu of carrot and coriander soup, salmon, roast lamb with broccoli & carrots followed by apple and rhubarb crumble, none of which had any discernible modern twist or grain of innovation or creativity? Perhaps the usual chef was on holiday but no chef should ever produce such tasteless and uninspiring food and certainly not at this price. We regularly produce better at home. We were left feeling very embarrassed and won't be doing it again.

Booked this with my girlfriend as a late xmas treat, stayed in the South which was large, comfortable and had a an almost errie(in a good way) feel to it. Also had a lovely view over the private beach and sea. We were one of only 2 couple staying that night and the service we received was first class. The restaurant is small and cosy and the food being of michelin star standard was extremely tasty, diverse and filling. Only qualm is the drive into the lodge, the road is very bumpy and pot holed but i suppose that adds to the knockinaam's secluded and romantic element. Its quite pricey but in this case you definitely get what you pay for.

We have now visited Knockinaam Lodge 10 times across the last few years and have never had a single reason to complain. The staff manage to achieve the trick of being attentive and invisible all at the same time. The food, location, staff and rooms are all perfect. We will be back again and again. Wifi in the bedrooms would be my only request. Brilliant!

We come here for their set Sunday lunch a couple of times a year and have always found it excellent. The lunch on a Sunday is a set menu but somehow manages to produce a menu that appeals to everyone without being boring or bland. The service is always friendly yet discreet, serving swiftly but not rushed. The setting is beautiful and the sitting rooms peaceful and relaxing. It is good value considering the quality of ingredients, the level of skill of the cooking and portion size.

We called in at Knockinaam Lodge during a walk in the area and (after taking off our walking boots just inside the doorway) we went through into the beautifully panelled bar area where we thoroughly enjoyed a large pot of tea and an amazingly big round shortbread biscuit each. These biscuits had a hint of lemon flavour and just melted in the mouth! The service was friendly and attentive (even though we had only called for a pot of tea) and we enjoyed every minute of our Knockinaam Lodge experience. Marvellous!

Only 7 or 8 rooms in this hotel. Churchill met Eisenhower here during the war. Great food and a super whisky bar. The setting looking out to the private beach over the front lawn was amazing. We saw deer on the hillside in the hotel grounds as we were eating breakfast.

2nd Visit - I stayed this time at Kirkcudbright Bay Hotel for three nights. A mixed experience. The best about the hotel is the food....exceptional, tasty. I had the fish and chips which was breaded in panco breadcrumbs which was super crispy and super delicious. Breakfast was hot tasty and traditional though the cereal selection was limited. The downside to my stay was my room (No.1).....comfortable and warm but very dated and had an alarmingly large amount of extensions. I'm a technical person so that was a bit concerning. Even though the website says the room are serviced daily you have to advise the staff prior which I missed the first night. Another slight thing even though I knew this prior, is they don't do evening meals on Tues/Wed which is a pain if your struggling to get booked in somewhere else. 9/10 for food, 6/10 for remainder. 1st Visit - I popped in for an evening meal and wasn't disappointed. Friendly staff, well cooked, tasty steak pie and a cracking pint of IPA. Will look at staying here in the future. A++++

Omg this place is top class!! Previous Michelin Star, they haven't dropped their standard. 2 or 3 course set menu, the menu had a map of Scotland titled The Larder, showing where their ingredients are sourced. I had the best Cheese Soufflé I've ever had, large for a starter and so cheesy tangy. Hubster had the salmon marinated in beetroot, on the small side but delicious. Beautifully rare lamb for main with a filo pastry black pudding, and a lamb samosa, so minty, amazing accompaniments and presentation. Hubster upgraded to a Rib Eye, said it was the best he'd ever had. Chef wasn't keen on serving it blue, but it was perfect. We were full really but couldn't resist the dessert menu. White chocolate rice pudding... omg just the best! And sticky toffee pudding. We'd mistakenly booked a bar table, and couldn't understand why we couldn't move to the restaurant as there were free tables, but the service was excellent, attentive and friendly. It was all amazing, thank you guys 👏

It's a great shame that this place will be closing shortly because the food and the staff are so lovely! Super according to a coeliac and went above + beyond in everything. Best of luck to Mr Pooks and all those involved in this little gem.
