Omg this place is top class!! Previous Michelin Star, they haven't dropped their standard. 2 or 3 course set menu, the menu had a map of Scotland titled The Larder, showing where their ingredients are sourced. I had the best Cheese Soufflé I've ever had, large for a starter and so cheesy tangy. Hubster had the salmon marinated in beetroot, on the small side but delicious. Beautifully rare lamb for main with a filo pastry black pudding, and a lamb samosa, so minty, amazing accompaniments and presentation. Hubster upgraded to a Rib Eye, said it was the best he'd ever had. Chef wasn't keen on serving it blue, but it was perfect. We were full really but couldn't resist the dessert menu. White chocolate rice pudding... omg just the best! And sticky toffee pudding. We'd mistakenly booked a bar table, and couldn't understand why we couldn't move to the restaurant as there were free tables, but the service was excellent, attentive and friendly. It was all amazing, thank you guys 👏

Had a lovely meal in the bar. It was not a typical bar menu more a relaxed fine dining experience. 2 courses for £42 but the food was excellent and the staff very friendly and efficient.

Excellent service and a high standard of unusual cuisine in a pleasant atmosphere. My son, who is a bit of a connoisseur, said that the fillet steak he had was the best in a long time.

What a wonderful lunch. We were greeted by the most friendly people and seated. So attentive and one of the highlights. We went for the ham terrine and mussels as a starter, both wonderful and so tasty. For main we had the game sausages and mash and the braised beef. Delicious, brilliantly cooked, well seasoned and so satisfying. I wish we had had room for pudding! The room was cosy and warm. The bill was also only £55 including 2 soft drinks each! We were so impressed. Will definitely be back and cannot recommend enough.

We were having lunch in the restaurant. The service was attentive and friendly and prompt delivery of the pre meal was made. The menu offered a good range of options at £30 for two course. The starters were enjoyed by all with particular praise for the mussels dish. For the main course the roast beef was welcome. I had the fish and chips which were well presented but with one concern. Why serve the dish with chopped up garden peas. There should at least have been a choice of mushy peas. Finally the coffee which was an espresso but it had no crema -unforgivable All in all a good experience

Brought the family here including three children under three, lovely restaurant, but I was looking to eat the bar menu. I did ask and was told that the only menu was the a la carte, which made things a little difficult and a lot more expensive ie no children options. In fairness they did chicken gujons and chips that did the job. Food wise we had one fillet steak, lovely, two feather blade, loved it, two chicken supreme, loved it. My partridge Bon bon was spectacular but the breast overcooked. Desert wise everyone loved them from caramel to apple crumble soufflé. The lady who looked after us was great.

We ate here on the last night of our holiday celebration for my husband’s 60th and it exceeded expectations. We started with the chefs snacks. I had an oyster and the focaccia with marmite butter - both delicious. Hubby had the chefs snacks selection - steak tartare and a langoustine in batter which he thoroughly enjoyed. We both had the haggis scotch eggs as a starter - oh my goodness, they were amazing - the yoke still tender and slightly runny. For mains I had the plaice while my husband had the pork belly, cheek, fillet and a scallop (along with a carrot, black pudding bon bon and some potatoes) very rich and looked delicious. The plaice was tender and perfectly cooked. We decided we had to try the desserts so I plumped for the cheese platter while hubby had the sticky toffee pudding with tonka bean ice cream. Unfortunately the cheese platter defeated me - just too much after such a rich meal-but I had enough of each of them to say they were all delicious and all Scottish! The sticky toffee pudding went down a treat too! All in all the food here was amazing and great value for money. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful and pleasant and it was a real treat to be there. We’d highly recommend this place to anyone who enjoys seriously high quality food without all the stuffiness that normally goes with it. The atmosphere was lovely and relaxed. Thank you to all the wonderful staff!

What a little gem of a place, we ate here whilst staying at the Outdoor Hotel a five minute walk away, and were blown away by the delicious food. Everything about our meal, from the moment we arrived to the moment we put our cutlery down was an absolute joy. I'd more than highly recommend.

Arrived here at 5pm just as the restaurant was opening We found it odd that only the restaurant was open and not the bar, even though this is an inn. Scottish lager before dinner. I’m normally an ale drinker and I’m yet to find a decent pint in Scotland: no exception here. Food was very good. Haggis black pudding to start then haddock in a curried batter: very unusual but excellent Braised lamb was very tender and tasty, although the chef took exception to my requesting mint sauce! We’re staying at Friars Carse so it was good to try somewhere near and just as good.

We visited on a Saturday night and we were able to book in advance. We were also welcomed with a dog, which is always a plus. As we had a dog we were placed in the bar area. This was lovely and well furnished, everything looked very new. We had the burgers and gammon steaks for main courses, followed by rice pudding and sticky toffee pudding. All were very good, no complaints. If I'm giving an honest review, the only area to improve would be the service. Both staff were very pleasant. However, it took a very long time to receive and remove each course and also appear for the bill. I had to ring the bar bell to get the bill, after waiting as long as I could. The main restaurant did not appear full, but regardless, it may be because we were in the bar, further away. So, my only point would be to make sure those in the bar are not forgotten. If I was in the area, this wouldn't put me off revisiting though.

This is the second time we've eaten here and we wondered if it would live up to our memories of our last visit - it did! The service is warm and friendly. Great attention to detail. Every plate has little surprises and bursts of flavour. Freshly baked breads with marmite butter accompanied fresh oysters and a chef's platter of langoustine and wagyu beef tartare, followed by chicken parfait and smoked salmon starters and pork belly and hake for mains. Desserts/cheese sounded wonderful too but we were too full to try them. Next time ....

Having relocated to the Auldgirth area in recent years my family, friends and I were keen to checkout this local for a drink - with a view to coming back to dine with some regularity. After being seated in the bar area to drink a some wine, we noticed that some other guests had some nibbles. I had to go into the main restaurant area to search for someone to attend to us since no one was attentive to take our order. Finally after getting the *chefs* attention, we were rudely told they don't do bar snacks and only do food in the restaurant. We then moved closer to the lovely fireplace to keep warm but were then told by a very hostile man that we shouldn't have moved closer to the fire place - despite the fact others had just moved from there. The service here is Terrible, Rude and Unfriendly - no wonder the place was empty. To top it all off, they charged us for larger glasses of wine than what we ordered, which of course we had to pay for due to their negligence. Overall, this visit was a real let down since we were hoping to enjoy this local eatery, but the experience was so hostile and rude that we will not be coming back again. DO NOT RECOMMEND! Don't waste your money or ruin your evening here.

We were staying locally and this place came recommended. The dining room is a little characterless compared to the main building and the music was personally not for me, but the food more than makes up for any blandness in the surroundings. The room is smart, though and the staff were extremely friendly and professional. Louise, our waitress, was attentive and knowledgable. We were there for Sunday lunch and the menu was perfect. I am always suspicious of very long menus, so the fact that there were only five or six well-judged choices per course suggested that the kitchen was focussed on fresh and seasonal. We started with haggis Scotch Egg, which was delicious - crisp crumb, a well-seasoned haggis and a still soft egg. The roast beef main came with the best Yorkshire pudding I’ve ever had, the richest, beautifully reduced gravy and large range of perfectly prepared sides. The beef itself was tender, perfectly cooked and extremely tasty. The chocolate fondant dessert was indulgent and silky smooth. The whole meal spoke of the confidence the kitchen brigade (visible in their smart uniforms in the open kitchen) have in both their ingredients and their skill. More Scottish restaurants should have this faith - less choice, more care and concentration on sourcing, quality and expertise. The price was remarkable for cooking of this quality. The front of house and the kitchen should be very proud of this place and the quality they deliver. We will be back.

We came to Dumfries and Galloway for a quick weekend break and found this restaurant purely by chance . Booked for an early dinner and boy were we lucky . Petit fours served to us by the owner Rab experts assisted by his 13 year old son. Who then explained exactly what they were. Now you’re either for Marmite or against it so the idea of Marmite butter might just make you ill. However try it . It’s absolutely brilliant spread on freshly baked Foccacia bread . Followed up with mussels which were cooked to perfection and a huge bowl to boot . Main course of sirloin steak with fab pepper sauce and roasting hot straight from the oven chips and the biggest onion rings I’ve ever seen. Cheese to finish off and more cheese biscuits than I Could eat . I wasn’t overly adventurous tonight but the menu selection was fab ! My partner in crime had the salmon to start followed by the pork belly and gave it 11/10 too . All in all definitely with the 41 mile drive each way as the find was ace , Rab the chef and owner was courteous and friendly , his wee lad a bit of a star. We will be back but next time we will stay as the accommodation looks fantastic. If you’re in the area you’ve got to go here . Definitely 12/10 from me on food , service and ambience . I should point out our actual waitress was fab too !

One of our favourite places to eat in Castle Douglas, if not our outright one. Proper authentic Italian food of really high quality, and they know how to entertain our 4 year old every time he's in. The fact they remember him is even better. Cannot recommend more highly.
