We were regular users of the old Carlyles despite living in Hampshire , the drive was worth it. Today we sampled the new cafe now called Whittakers. Positive points friendly staff and now dog friendly. Negative points food average and the breakfast omelette is now served with a hash brown instead of the little fried spuds of old.

This is a lovely coffee shop, food is good, and well priced, its just a shame the staff are unfriendly and miserable.

I had heard a lot about this place and decided to rty it. The place was spotlessly clean and we were served pretty quickly and was very friendly and welcoming. All food is cooked to order. There was no delay in getting the food. I had a mixed grill. But it was more a glorified breakfast. Decent size portion and the food was cooked nicely. But nothing to write home about. This is a place where you are satisfied, but not overly impressed food wise. But the warm and welcoming atmosphere makes up for it. I would certainly have no problem going there again.

Pierre's is a sandwich bar, really, rather than a cafe as such. Great selection of sandwiches, wraps, baguettes, and baked potatoes listed on the boards, and they cook their own baguettes in an oven right in front of you. However, as I said, it's not really a cafe. I stare up at the boards. I'm in the mood for a baked potato - with chilli, preferably. That's not on the menu, but I spot three Christmas specials pasted up onto the baked potato list. Turkey, stuffing and ham etc. So, I enquire if they are fills for baked potatoes. "Well, you can have anything you want in a baked potato", says the young lady behind the counter. "You can choose from anything on the menu and we can put it in a potato, but it might cost a bit extra." She's late twenties, dyed blonde hair, heavy makeup, and a strongish eastern European accent. She's trying to be helpful, I know. But I'm lazy. I don't want to have to design my lunch from scratch, though I know a lot of people do and it's what sandwich bars pride themselves for. I'm also slightly confused what the Christmas specials might look like (a mini dinner?, a sandwich filling?). So, not wanting to create a fuss, I panic and go for the lowest common denominator: a bacon baguette, packet of crisps and an orange juice – to eat in. It's nice enough, but maybe a bit steep at £6.50. I finish it quickly, not because it's particularly tasty but because the door's wide open, it's mid-December, and I've got my coat and scarf on. And the ambience is business-like rather than relaxing and inviting. A gentle stream of new customers enter and order, and some sit down to eat, like me. Behind the counter, apart from the blonde young lady there are two big blokes, also in their twenties. They're wearing aprons so must be serving staff, but they just seem to be hanging around not doing much. They all give the air of being temporary staff and that sandwich-making is not the first love of their lives. Cheerful enough, but not wonderfully friendly. I get up to leave. On my way out I call "Thanks", trying to catch someone's eye, hoping someone might smile back at me. I'm invisible. Nobody seems the least interested. I might be back for a sandwich some day. Not sure I'll be back for a sit-down. But then, it is really just a sandwich bar rather than a cafe, after all.

Until recently this cafe provided excellent hone made panini’s and soups as well as hone made cakes. I would have rated 5 stars. However, the food is still OK but they have stopped a lot of the home made stuff in favour of brought in products which are not as good as their hone made offering.

Food and drink fine but don't drop in if you are walking your dog. I live alone with my dog and I like to take her a Jack Russell with me. I often go into cafes and pubs with my dog but Costas do not allow dogs.

An almost authentic step-back in time to 1960's station buffets right down to over-priced awful coffee. The only thing missing is the fog of tobacco smoke! If you want to relive your youth, or see what you parents endured, this is a must. The building and decor are almost all vintage or antique, and you can look out on the steam trains.

Visited the branch today! You had a white girl with long brunette hair tied in ponytail with atrocious customer service. She may no acknowledgment of us waiting to be served. She was hostile with another Asian member of staff. She stood there open boxes making 0 effort to even look up and smile to even welcome us in branch. The arrogance of this girl was ridiculous! Why work in customer service if you going to have this attitude

Our second visit. Last time we had their home made pizza in the large garden area but it was a bit chilly today so we went inside. We were quickly welcomed and given a menu, finding ourselves a table from where we could see the river. You give your table number at the bar when you place your order. My wife was pleased to find they had her favourite Hendicks gin and Fevertree tonic. I had a pint of crisp Spitfire lager. Our burgers were clearly home made with quality ingredients. Looked as good as they tasted. Delicious, as were the skin on fries. The service was friendly and despite them.being busy, prompt. My wife said it would make a great wedding venue before we noticed another room clearly laid out for such an occasion. Even if you are not going on the boat trip, this place is worth seeking out whether for a refreshing drink or excellent food.
