Food was amazing (I had duck). Service was slow especially given how quiet it was but I believe they were navigating the first night of a new menu. Heard three different tables complaining mostly about slow service but a vegetarian near me also said she just got a plate of cold pasta which was flavourless. I paid and left and a lady came running after me that thought I hadn't paid. This would have been prevented if I'd been served by the same person but there were so many serving me in their own way that she hadn't noticed someone else bring me the bill (who I'm sure was trying to hurry me off as I'd already said I'll go up and and pay when I'm done).

I had to eat at Le Cafe in Madejski hotel as my company kindly paid for my meals. Service from staff is very good. They are helpful and friendly. However, the food is on the bad side.. Steak was pretty good, but I wished I had more steak than chips. Thai curry tasted nothing like Thai curry. I was quite disgusted from the curry and almost wanted to vomit from the first bite. Burger was so dry that I almost chocked on it. It takes absolutely ages to get your food when there is no one else in the restaurant.

My wife and I were travelling to watch Wasps Vs Saracens at the Madejski Stadium and wanted to watch our team arrive at the gound at 1.30pm (3pm Kick Off) so booked for when Le Cafe opened at 12.30pmGetting the reservation was just a phone call and so I was happy. Then I got a returned call to check it was me.Then I got the email with a 2 page form that told me what I could and couldn't do there and warnings about wearing my "strip" and taking full name, address, email (Which they already had from the phone call as otherwise they couldn't have sent me that), Credit card details, agreement to pay in full in figures and words and an acknowledgement that I had no grounds whatsoever to get a refund if I cancelled within five days of the reservation!!After that, I thought, the meal itself had better be bloody good!We arrived in trepidation, expecting to have petit Gauleiters marshalling us through their esteemed hotel and Cafe and instead got a really relaxed, friendly and efficient welcome from a team that recognised the name immediately, took us to a reasonably good table with a banquette seating to one side and well laid, took our drinks order and told us what to expect. The food was very nicely cooked and presented and clearly the Chef is encouraged to use his/her imagination. The food having been paid in advance it was just necessary to pay for the drinks on the day which did not include the complimentary coffees at the end so left a reasonable cash tip for the staff who had been excellent and attentive.Unlikely to be in the area again but would advise all Rugby Fans that this is a top class place to eat and very reasonable so if you are playing London Irish at home, book lunch or supper there.

Second visit here. Last time it was a superb brunch due to an early kick-off. This time a more leisurely 3 course buffet before a 3pm kick-off. Only two choices of starter (prawn cocktail or pates) but both very good. Only 2 choices of main but again both very good ( 3 of us had the roast beef which was really tender. 1 had the salmon which he said was lovely.) Three lovely puddings to choose from - Individual banoffee pies, lemon meringue or syrup sponge - of course there was also custard or cream plus some lovely raspberry sauce which went well with the lemon meringue. Good service as before from a friendly, helpful team. Not 5 star this time due to limited selection. £25 cost was fair, although perhaps a bit loaded due to the convenience of the location.

Fairly ordinary-style hotel cafe, but the menu is a bit limited (to be fair, it does have a separate Thai menu which I didn't get to) and the although the young staff are friendly, they could do with some training and supervision - the service is a bit random. Cooking was OK, but he draught beer I fancied wasn't available, and when the bottled version arrived it tasted a bit odd - turned out the bottle was nearly 3 months out of date. Shouldn't happen in a supposed 4* hotel.

We had the Pre-match Brunch here as soon as it opened at 11.30am since the (rugby) match was due to start at 1pm. There is a superb choice (buffet-style) including fresh fruit, cooked food and pastries. Toast was cooked to order. I asked if there were fried eggs available and although they said that was not normally done for this buffet the chef happened to overhear and immediately cooked two for me then put some out on the buffet as well. Waiting staff were great as was management. At £19.95 the price was fair for what was available and the uniquely convenient location. Highly Recommended.

We ate dinner here on Friday night. We ordered 2 x mains, 2 glasses of wine and 1 x dessert and it came to £47 which was overpriced for what it was. For example the vegetable Thai green curry contained carrots and peas only. There were lots of small flies, some of which landed in my wine. When I told the waitress, she laughed it off.The breakfast was expensive (approx £13 per day - discount for 2 night stay). Hotel guests were allowed to wear PJs and socks in Le Cafe which was unacceptable as it is a 4* hotel. We will eat somewhere else and not have breakfast the next time we stay at the Majeski Hotel.

Had smoked salmon to start - the quartered slice of bread was spread thickly with butter so couldnt eat it. The hake was lovely, moist thick fisk steak. Too much rich buttery sauce that the potatoes were struggling to swim through - could have been far more subtle because the fish was great. Creme brulee nice, 'urn' coffee by the taste of it. House red was ok.

Great Restaurant I booked over email and was very easy- I was sent the menus and what they would be serving on the day.We went on a Saturday before football (Reading game) for my mother’s birthday, depending how busy the restaurant is they will serve the buffet or if not the a’l carte menu.We were lucky it was the buffet, the restaurant was busy and we were served quickly and ordered a glass of wine each £5.95 – the buffet looked wonderful and lots of choice.Starters were soup, cold meats and different types of fish and some wonderful prawns, main courses were a Indian choice roast beef, a veg option all looked lovely and served with appropriate condiments. The desserts although I was very full looked so lovely – I had the cherry cheesecake which was wonderful and my mother had the fruit salad.Overall it is a pricey meal at around £70.00 for the both of us but for a treat it was worth it, the food in particular was amazing and the atmosphere was good – was impressed with the service and speed.

Pierre's is a sandwich bar, really, rather than a cafe as such. Great selection of sandwiches, wraps, baguettes, and baked potatoes listed on the boards, and they cook their own baguettes in an oven right in front of you. However, as I said, it's not really a cafe. I stare up at the boards. I'm in the mood for a baked potato - with chilli, preferably. That's not on the menu, but I spot three Christmas specials pasted up onto the baked potato list. Turkey, stuffing and ham etc. So, I enquire if they are fills for baked potatoes. "Well, you can have anything you want in a baked potato", says the young lady behind the counter. "You can choose from anything on the menu and we can put it in a potato, but it might cost a bit extra." She's late twenties, dyed blonde hair, heavy makeup, and a strongish eastern European accent. She's trying to be helpful, I know. But I'm lazy. I don't want to have to design my lunch from scratch, though I know a lot of people do and it's what sandwich bars pride themselves for. I'm also slightly confused what the Christmas specials might look like (a mini dinner?, a sandwich filling?). So, not wanting to create a fuss, I panic and go for the lowest common denominator: a bacon baguette, packet of crisps and an orange juice – to eat in. It's nice enough, but maybe a bit steep at £6.50. I finish it quickly, not because it's particularly tasty but because the door's wide open, it's mid-December, and I've got my coat and scarf on. And the ambience is business-like rather than relaxing and inviting. A gentle stream of new customers enter and order, and some sit down to eat, like me. Behind the counter, apart from the blonde young lady there are two big blokes, also in their twenties. They're wearing aprons so must be serving staff, but they just seem to be hanging around not doing much. They all give the air of being temporary staff and that sandwich-making is not the first love of their lives. Cheerful enough, but not wonderfully friendly. I get up to leave. On my way out I call "Thanks", trying to catch someone's eye, hoping someone might smile back at me. I'm invisible. Nobody seems the least interested. I might be back for a sandwich some day. Not sure I'll be back for a sit-down. But then, it is really just a sandwich bar rather than a cafe, after all.
