This pub looks lovely from the street and has a beautiful setting on a river. It’s such a shame that the food and service do not match that. Went for dinner Friday evening. You can not have a tab running so have to keep getting up and paying for everything each time. We realise now why but we shall get to that. Bar man was dreadful and rude. Everything we asked for was answered with a no. Food was terrible. Everyone got given cold chips and my Mother had to send her charred tart back. It should not have been brought out in the first place. Our fish was overcooked and the pork rib was like rubber. We had to collect all the cutlery ourselves and no one cleared our plates. We had to move them to a free table. We noticed that the table next to us were being served by a very attentive server and we asked why we couldn’t have service. We were told that only people staying in the rooms at the pub got this. Whoever thought this rule up is mad. What sort of impression does this give to other diners. Whether or not you are staying, the meal part is extra and everyone in the dining room should be treated the same. Don’t waste your money going here. Everything about the experience except the location and building is terrible.

Disgusting service manager needs a lesson in customer service went with family who had come to visit for dinner table of 4 adults and 1 child ordered food asked for a cheese and ham pizza for child came out with vinegar drizzle on it explained just wanted cheese and ham pizza took it back came out without tomato base just cheese and ham thrown on top so explained again told dont want it now as we had all eaten we asked for 2 chips that came with our meal to have onions ordered 2 cheese garlic breads and 1 had had a hard bit of over cooked garlic on it that hadn't been removed that hard could have broken your tooth on it or worse chocked so was told would be removed from bill get the bill to find they had still charged for pizza and garlic bread and £5.95 for some onion on top of chips that come with the meal no they had charged us for 2 x £5.95 extra chips so went to query the bill to be told they wouldn't remove the pizza that we hadn't had as they didn't understand we just wanted a cheese and ham pizza chips was charged incorrectly so started sorting that out the manger chloe I believe her name was starting saying we was rude and said she wouldn't serve us when have a private conversation between ourselves felt the need to keep jumping calling us rude saying check the bill see if it's correct we'll I thought that was there job not ours then when leaving said loudly well that was a pleasure safe to say I would never return and will be taking this complaint further as this is disgusting treatment towards paying customers there prices are over priced and diffrent prices to there website and food isn't great and waitress and waiters have no communication skills what so ever and cleared the table whilst we was still eating and didnt even ask if we was finished just removed the plates tables ans menus were sticky and disgusting also cleaning around whilst customers are eating with bleach which isnt sonething you want to be smelling whilst eating your dinner so I would avoid at all cost as you are treated terrible and no customer service

Stopped off for a spontaneous evening meal. Found our table number and ordered at the bar which was a long process considering it wasn’t particularly busy. The barman was awful, absolutely dull and no smile, completely in the wrong job. Our burgers were very bland, bacon was barely cooked and fatty. Chips were cold and tasted as if they were fried a while before serving. Usually staff check back on guests meals to see if everything is satisfactory but didn’t see anyone. The outside terrace was dirty, not swept, tables sticky. It’s a real shame because it is a gem of a location. Management must not care, will not return.

We had been here once before for breakfast about a year ago and remember it being decent and sitting out by the river, so we decided to pop in for lunch to eat near the river again. I don't know what's happened - there was a stark difference between this and our previous experience here. Lunch can only be described as very overpriced and bland. I had the lamb hot dog with tzatziki and chips and spiral cucumber. The tzatziki was only a tiny amount and was really tasteless. The bun was going stale and hard at the edges (not toasted so wasn't due to that). The spiral cucumber was literally dry cucumber skin that was wrinkly! I was shocked they even put it on due to the state of it - would have been happier if they told me they'd run out! It was £18! My wife had a beef burger with bacon. The bacon was really just fat, and not even crispy fat.. the kind you really have to pull off. Overall would definitely not recommend having lunch there. The location is lovely and we have had a nice breakfast there in the past.. can't comment on how the breakfast is now and I doubt we'll return.

Has the Grove Ferry been taken over? New Owners? No-one seemed to have a clue today! Customer service was practically non existent! No kids menus available! Go to the bar to order drinks and food and bar quite frankly looked a mess, unorganised and chaotic. All staff members seemed young and inexperienced and need to be told to smile ! At one stage a long line of people waiting for the bar more than a couple moaning about waiting. Food mediocre, arrived warm not hot. What’s happened to the Grove Ferry? Terrible.

It used to be really good and as we had not been for a while, we thought it time to pay a visit. We were very disappointed with every aspect of the experience. The place hadn't been cleaned, there was dust on the top of the beer engines and the toilets hadn't been cleaned for some while. There was no table service, despite beeing sat indoors, it was order at the bar and pay as you go. This proved to be an exceedingly slow process as the staff had trouble working the POS system. The menus were well worn pieces of printed paper and although there was a promise of 'Specials' this boiled down to "I think there's some Lamb Shank left". The menu promised Pie of the Day - expecting home made, I ordered the Steak and Ale pie (there was also Chicken and Mushroom and Spinach and Mushroom). When it arrived with it's seasonal veg (just peas and carrots) and chips, there was no gravy, which would have been a nice touch. The pie was squat, almost flat with very little filling and the pastry was soggy. Without doubt, the pie, veg and chips were simply wholesale supplies cooked rather poorly. My wife had a Hunters Chicken Burger, and the Chicken was way overdone and going quite tough. A small glass of Merlot proved difficult to find (they even looked in the fridge!) when it did actually arrive, I am fairly sure that it was not Merlot - more like a Malbec. The staff however were pleasant and polite throughout. I doubt we shall venture back, which is a shame because it's a glorious spot by the river with plenty of outside tables - perfect in the summer months.

We visited in our motorhome this weekend whilst visiting Canterbury and Whitstable. The landlord was kind enough to allow us to park overnight in the carpark. We ate in the restaurant looking over the river. Good was lovely quality. From Steaks to Pizza. They actually have a smart new deck being added which will be lovely on a summer’s evening. I have been told that you can also launch Kayaks and paddle-boards next door . There is a company also doing boat trips called Grove Ferry River Trips next door if you want to combine a few activities whilst visiting.

I chose this beautiful place to come for Mother's Day and was very happy from start to finish with the friendly staff who served us, they went above and beyond to serve us. It was busy as expected as it was mother's day, we did notice a few tables around us were very rude and ungrateful to the staff which was sad to see as they were extremely kind and helpful. People have lost respect in society and there is no reason to be so rude as it effects other tables nearby. So more considerationfor others would have been nice. It was expected to be busy being a typical mother's day when a lot of people venture out. The food was incredible and well WORTH the wait. They especially decorated with banners balloons and flowers which was a nice touch. We loved the blossom trees which are new and the new bar area as you walk in looks fab a HUGE improvement. We could see they are renovating the decking outside which is great news as we were informed by the female manager that this is in preparation for Summer which is fab news! We can't wait to return and enjoy another truly delicious meal and really enjoy the friendly warm welcome we always receive when we attend on occasion. A huge well done to all of the grove ferry team because you made my mother's day fabulous and many others too!

I took my mum here yesterday for Mother’s Day and we had a fabulous time. The food was perfect and worth the wait which we were prepared for being a busy Mother’s Day and we could see the place was fully booked so we were grateful to be given a table. Our waitress Chloe who we learned was the manager was exceptional. She was a delight and smiled the whole time even though some other tables were treating her poorly. The other staff were also great especially as some were new and some were on their first day. We can’t wait to go back as she informed us about future events taking place very soon especially the Easter weekend events. Thank you again Grove Ferry for giving us a lovely day and see you all again soon.

Attended yesterday for Mother’s Day which was amazing! A huge thanks to all of the staff as they were great. Food was scrumptious and thoroughly enjoyed. There was a little delay but as it was fully booked this is more than understandable. I don’t normally leave reviews but felt this was truly needed given the extra special experience we all felt we had receive yesterday. The only negative was the ungrateful and impatient rude table next to us who were abusing the staff for silly reasons and didn’t appreciate the staffs hard work. We then heard them saying they just wanted to get a discount because they didn’t have enough money for their bill and were making up excuses between them. So their complaints and bad reviews on here are clearly false so I feel very sorry for the business especially as they did receive the discount which I don’t think should have been given neither deserved which is sad. You can see the managers really did try their best and to see reviews on here slating them is unreal! If you see our review please know we LOVED our service and thank you hugely for giving us a perfect day!! Not all of us are ungrateful horrible customers. We will be returning very soon and can’t wait for the sun to be shining to enjoy the garden next time as we were also sad it was raining all day but luckily we sat by the open fire and enjoyed this really nice surprise!!

We’ve been here a few times, couple times in the summer and also today. Each time, it got worse and worse. Came in and sat at our table which was messy and not clean. Waited 15 minutes for someone to acknowledge us and take a drinks order. waited another 15 mins to get said drinks. Once we eventually ordered food, we were sat waiting for over an hour for it to arrive, starters came at different times and mains were served incorrectly and at different times. We were told certain things were off the menu, only to discover what we had originally ordered had to be changed as it was also out of stock. 4 other tables around us all complained and had the same experience. When we gave feedback to the manager, he was arrogant and tried to justify our wait. Told us no one waited over an hour for food when quite literally other tables around us were waiting longer than us, also mentioned how they were understaffed with over 200 guests booked. Front of house staff were ran ragged and kept apologising while the owner was sat in the corner looking after his dog. Not acceptable Appalling behaviour and which only filters down to the rest of the staff. A little tip - you set the example from the top, that mentality filters down. Clearly we all know what the issue is exactly.

Went for Mothers Day meal today with family. Seated at a dirty table, after 20 mins we had to ask for menus and for someone to take our drinks order which took ages to come. Had to ask three times for tap water which was charged for. Food options was bad as they had run out of a lot of stuff, after an hour starters arrived but not all of them then had to wait a further 30 mins for main again not everything arrived together some had finished their mains before the others had arrived. When we asked to speak to manager no apology offered and that what do we expect they had 200 covers today she was rude and walked off saying she was going to get her boss who after 10 mins decided to show and the story kept changing they had 120 covers and he deemed it acceptable to wait an 1 and half hour. Food was basic and over priced. Will not be going back which is a shame as you want to support local businesses

My wife chose the Grove Ferry for her Mothering Sunday celebration. We arrived 15 minutes early for our 3p.m. booking. Our table had been given to another group. We were seated 15 minutes late. The menu came in the form of an A4 sheet printed both sides with a list of bar food. No Sunday lunch menu. I wanted to leave but my wife and a waitress talked me into staying. We ordered. To be fair my food wasn’t bad, but nothing to give praise to! My wife sizzling garlic and chilli prawns came out. They weren’t sizzling and had no taste whatsoever. Then her main supposedly Turkey escalope coated in breadcrumbs, with skin on fries and veg arrived. It was a turkey escalope in breadcrumbs, but had a tomato pasata with cheese grilled on top. The fries had no skin on, they looked like MacDonald’s fries and the seasonal veg was peas. After speaking with the lady in charge, who gave a terribly lame excuse, my wife asked her to remove it from the table. I used to be a publican in Sandwich and visited Grove Ferry on many occasions. Today will be my/our last.

Eek...to say this place has gone downhill is an understatement! The food is terrible - we visited with 2 friends this weekend and were surprised to see it was quite empty for a Sunday afternoon. Now we know why. We ordered The Bear Island burger, a footlong hot dog and a pie of the day (steak & ale). All of the orders appeared to have been microwaved at best, and had hardly any discernible taste other than oil! For c.£16 for the burger, we left feeling incredibly disappointed and quite frankly, robbed. Safe to say we won't be visiting again for food...but the bar staff were absolutely lovely and attentive.

Really disappointed with the food. It’s a shame as it’s such a lovely location! Bacon and Brie sandwich was dry with no cranberry sauce (not on the menu, but surprising nonetheless). Bacon undercooked. Burger had no sauce, beef patty was disgusting (think ‘burger van’ style ‘meat’), chips and onion rings were really oily. Prices suggested better quality food, eg. Freshly made burger patties. Felt dodgy that afternoon/evening. Violently sick early hours of the following morning, all day the following day, all night the following night. Should have complained at the time, although other reviews suggest that wouldn’t have been any use.

This pub looks as if it’s being refurbished, at least outside. The interior is shabby (peeling chair seats), dirty and untidy, so I hope it’s on the to do list as well. Whilst the actual loo is clean, the toilets are particularly grubby. The food has ‘value’ attached, by which I mean large portions so you think at first it’s a good deal. Huge doorstop sandwiches for instance but the bread is dry, the interior tasteless rubbery prawns padded with tons of nasty mayo, the accompanying salad is limp. Less bu better quality would be so much more. Sensational location.
