We stayed at the George for my aunt’s funeral in a nearby town. It was excellent. The room was large and comfortable, the food and atmosphere were good but what really made the difference was the staff. Everyone was friendly, efficient and responsive. Nothing was too much trouble and they were all lovely with our elderly dog. I know it is a dog friendly hotel but their enthusiasm made a huge difference. I would happily recommend the George for the night or, if you are passing through, a meal. My only criticism was that their parking spaces were tight!

I stopped by for lunch. Barman was friendly and the club sandwich was well filled. The chips which came with it was very overcooked and more crisp than potato but I still ate them. The downside was the awful smell in the bar. Dreadful spell of fish which was really unpleasant. I ate quickly and left as it was off putting but after I left I could smell fish on my clothing and in my hair. Shows how strong the smell was as I wasn’t in there long.

Very disappointed. A member of staff with short blonde hair, was very rude. I ordered 2 pints one small wine and I mean small, and 2 apple juices. It came to just under £26, when I asked are sure that’s right, she reapplied, would you like it more expensive. I couldn’t believe it, we have eaten here before with friends, directed people to use the hotel. We won’t be recommending the George in future, nor will we use it. Friends of mine were in there that evening. They also found her rude. We will now stick with the Vineyard.

I want to give a good review because the staff tries so hard BUT this hotel is run-down. Rugs are dirty and torn in many places. The shower in my room tinkled- no water pressure. The locals love the bar and it’s a lively place after work. Just wish the Shepard’s Brewery who owns the property took care of it. It doesn’t make me want to explore their other properties.

The room was tired and dirty. It was at the back of the hotel with a horrible view from the window. There's a building site next door at the moment and the noise was dreadful. Downstairs the bar was crowded and noisy, more of a pub atmosphere than a hotel. I would not recommend.

Very hit and miss for food this hotel I ordered a Thai Green Curry and the vegetables were not even cooked properly. I mentioned this to the staff but was not offered even a partial refund. The other thing they need to sort out is the eye watering prices for beer and wine. The pub was very empty for a Sunday Afternoon which is a shame as two years ago the food was really good and busier. I probably won't visit again until the food improves

When my wife and I are shopping in Cranbrook we often call into The George for a morning cup of coffee. We have never been disappointed. The staff are always friendly and helpful and the freshly made coffee always tastes good. There is also a welcoming atmosphere and the seating is ample and comfortable. It is wheelchair and pushchair friendly and dogs are welcome. There's a small car park at the rear of the hotel and a much larger (free) car park, a short distance away, at the Co-Operative Store.

Staff could not have been more welcoming or helpful, comfy bed, nespresso machine in room (plenty of pillows too, bonus) and yes it's an old building so creaking uneven floors and lots of stairs are to be expected! Summary: Clean comfortable room. No milk in the room for coffee or tea No breakfast served Manager AOL A pleasant enough overnight stay. The bed was super comfy, and the room was clean. We were staying overnight while attending a nearby wedding, so didn't use many of the facilities, it was just somewhere to stay overnight. Check-in was an informal friendly welcome, and our room was ready early, which was a bonus. Although there was a kettle and Nespresso machine in the room, we were disappointed to note that if we wanted milk, we would have to go down to reception and ask for some. When you wake up and need a coffee to get you started in teh morning, the last thing you want to be doing is getting dressed and going to find some milk! A few capsules of UHT would have been good enough. The real issue I have with The George was that on Sunday morning, when I had been looking forward to a good breakfast (I was already missing my first coffee of the day) we were told by the staff that they were unable to get the manager out of bed and so were not able to serve anything other than cereal and toast! The manager has an apartment on site and they could not get a response when knocking on the door. Not the first time it's happened either, according to the member of staff we spoke to.

We came today for mothers day lunch, first time here. We asked for 4 x adults well done Beef... they came out pink so we're sent back to be well done. We had 1 x pork belly and it was tiny... for £16.95 we definitely expected it to be a better sized slice, its was more of a kids portion. we was told 'we buy it in pre portioned, if you buy the regular one it's a better size' ... well if that's true then why are you charging such a high price for a smaller bit? Yet ive just looked on here and it seems as if i was given a childrens portion as ive seen pictures of the adults roast pork belly and it is massive compared!! The worst bit was they served the beef and it was like leather and black and very fatty. No one could enjoy it or eat it properly. Such a shame as the rest was pretty good but would not recommend their Sunday roasts if you're a meat eater. The manager didn't come over to see just sent a waitress to say 'the manager has said she will give 10% off...' 10% off when 3 people could hardly eat their meat at all and 1 could only eat a slice ... ridiculous.

I spent one night here with my husband and in laws in order to stay near to Scotney Castle and Bodium Castle. Cranbrook itself is small but we didn't spend too much time there. The hotel has history and character but has been well maintained and is very well presented with decor to suit the history. Rooms were comfortable and staff friendly. Suited us and the in laws well. We had dinner in the restaurant and despite it being part of a chain of pubs, the food was fabulous and exceeded our expectations. A good menu selection, good drinks, well presented and well cooked and reasonably priced. Complements to the chef! We all thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the breakfast in the morning. A great selection of cooked breakfast options, cooked to order and again, plenty to choose from and all came out fresh, well cooked and well presented. My well travelled in laws could only say good things about the whole experience which is a great compliment! Thanks The George!

Having had a good experience a few weeks back with a delicious Chicken Parmagiani, I visited again tonight Seeing that there was a traditional Roast Beef I thought I’ll give it a try. My companion ordered the Roast Pork. The beef was top side, yorkshire pud, roast potatoes, pig in blanket (1) and some vegetables. Bad mistake. The beef was far too over cooked and not surprisingly it was as tough as a door mat. I gave up eating the beef as it was horrendous. (I left half of it) I tried to eat as much of the vegetables as I could as they were good. Roast potatoes were old but still crispy. In hindsight, I should’ve ordered the pork as that was good I was asked how was the food. I did mention the beef was bad. Not sure if the young lady apologised but I hope the message was passed on to the chef The bill came to GBP36.00. Though I did not enjoy the food, I voluntarily gave a 10% service tip as the service was fine. I left GBP40 cash on the table and left….as I was walking to the door to leave I was told that I hadn’t paid! Surprised, I told the young lady I had left payment on the table. Now, I just wish I hadn’t left the GBP4 tip now!

I had a little birthday stay here with my wife and two of my friends. Although I agree with some of the negative comments is regards to the hotel being tired and not as clean in some areas it did not ruin our stay at all.I am more than happy to pay for my stay on arrival, we live in an environment now where you cannot trust everyone... its that simple... when I go to the pub I pay for my drinks before I drink them etc. etc.The greeting we received upon arrival was warm, friendly and professional. This continued throughout our whole stay... the staff were fantastic. This was the reason for our return visit. Our bedroom was worn but very clean, I slept so well and the pillows were great. We booked to eat in the restaurant, my pork belly was one of the best I have ever had. The service was attentive and appropriate. The breakfast was delicious, and like our dinner huge portions.Yes the hotel is tired ... but they are working on it, we all had the best time and will definitely be back.thank you x

Historic pub/hotel central in the pretty town of Cranbrook with a few parking spaces at the rear. Beyond that has little to recommend it although the staff were welcoming. The whole place needs a thorough deep clean which is alarming during a pandemic. Our room, facing the main street was inevitably affected by traffic noise. The mattress was cheap and uncomfortable and pillows likewise. The shower was a disappointing trickle. All public areas looked and felt grubby. Thread bare carpets on the stairs. We had booked dinner in the restaurant. Fairly basic menu; including things like fish or burger and chips and we ordered bangers and mash. You can't go wrong with bangers and mash can you? Wrong. Pile of mash but think it was reconstituted powder, cabbage was a mush, presumed from a frozen packet and the sausages were overcooked and tasteless. Gravy ok but probably not freshly made. The tables were really sticky! So much so that our glass almost had to be peeled from the table. Then I realised that the chair legs were also sticky and the large glazed wall panel was also absolutely filthy. I didn't want to imagine the level of grease in the kitchen. Breakfast was distinctly better...a generous portion of perfectly poached eggs and avocado on sourdough but that table was also really sticky. We were gone by 9am and would not stay again and wouldn't recommend.

We stayed here for 1 night and I can honestly say it’s the worst hotel we have stayed in. It’s a beautiful building full of so much history in an ideal location but as soon as you step inside you can see it’s been hugely neglected. We booked the superior room and the pictures online looked stunning - the website even mentions that the place has been revamped. I’d like to say this is false advertising, it hasn’t in any part. After requesting that we pay on arrival (£155) we went to the rooms. Even the corridors have ripped carpet and chipped paintwork. On arrival to our room we thought there had been a mistake. It’s was dirty, had damp walls, mastic peeling away around the bath, cracked tiles, sticky liquid on the floor, grey towels and stained sheets. A badly made bed in the middle of the room and dusty floors. We spoke to the receptionist and I showed him photos of what we had booked and he said that only some rooms look like that and they’re at the front of the hotel but the prices are the same? He also said that it’s very common for people to complain and he completely agreed that the rooms there are awful!! We honestly couldn’t wait to leave and I would say to anyone, don’t book. Management don’t care what it looks like and at a time when it’s important to support our hospitality industry they are going the wrong way about it. Please save your money and go somewhere else.

The place itself needs a but of TLC, which in these uncertain times, it might not get, which would be a great shame for such an historic inn. It's still a nice place to stay though.

We were met very warmly, asked if we wanted to book the restaurant for dinner and asked what time we would like breakfast. The hotel is interesting because of its age, with beams, suits of armour and a fabulous mirror at the top of the stairs. Our room was adequate, a bouncy bed, ok but my husband said he kept feeling like he was going to fall out in the night. The room itself was clean but the bathroom tiles were in desperate need of a good bleaching or better still replacing. There was tea and Nespresso coffee facilities in the room which were welcomed. The breakfast was good and the service was lovely. The dinner we had was ok. The starter of crab pate was delicious but my pork belly dinner was extremely over seasoned and left me very thirsty. After lockdown, we had hoped this would be a nice lunch out after a long walk. Made online reservation. But sadly, not. We walked into the hotel, which was empty, met by 2 waiters, told them we had a reservation. They did not check but told us to go and sit down and someone would bring menus. They seemed totally disinterested in welcoming us and gave us no direction of where to sit. No sign of masks or visors. Hand gel available at entrance. The restaurant was completely empty (alarm bell went off) but we were hungry and needed to eat. We ordered fish and chips and a pie. Asked the waiter to explain the £4 difference on standard or large fish and chips and was told the fish is the same size you just get a few more chips.Food arrived, it was very mediocre, but the fish was no bigger than a large fish finger. My husband questioned this and was told a word would be had with kitchen. Nothing reported back. Carrots were virtually raw and mashed potato tasted a bit like smash.Beef in pie was quite chewy. We ate, paid and left. When the front of house asked if we had enjoyed lunch, my husband mentioned the fish and was laughed at that it was too small. The staff were too busy chatting in the deserted rooms to be bothered with customers. Very very disappointed with this as had thought that coming out of lockdown would have created more passion and enthusiasm.Got home to discover they had then cancelled the online reservation!!We will not be returning.

It took nearly half an hour for the food to be served, and when it did arrive it was cold. The latte was 60% foam, hardly any coffee. The chicken supreme with sauteed potatoes was actually a chicken cutlet served with gravy and sliced roasted potatoes (looked like the sad leftovers of a Sunday roast, certainly not chicken supreme.) The tortellini was lukewarm and tasteless. But the chicken dish was salty to the point of being completely inedible. When we complained, the young man at the bar said, "Well, what do you expect me to do?" When we asked for a refund (just for the chicken dish, upon reflection we should have asked for the entire miserable experience to be refunded), it was very grudgingly given. Even then he didn't ask for our card details or anything, but assured us it has been put through. We began to leave uneasily, then finally (with the prodding of a co-worker) he admitted that he had made a mistake and we hadn't in fact been refunded at all. Eventually his co-worker just gave us the money. No apology, no explanation, no concept of customer service. Dirty tables, a long wait, and overpriced, cold, inedible food. Went in for lunch, food took over 35 minutes, then for one of the Main dishes, The Lamb burger the Bun was black/burnt and the chips stone cold, the manager didn’t even bother to come over, had to let the bar staff sort it out, total disregard for the customers, absolute joke of a place!

My brother Peter and I would like to take the time to thank Scott and his team for firstly making us so welcome at the George Hotel, with all the stress and emotions of laying our mother to rest to then have the wake in a most beautiful room where the team set the buffle/nibbles for us. flowers and candles were were a small detail that didnt go unnoticed (detail is retail) the team were so attentive and respectful, and with Mum having a lovely service the George's team should be very proud of themselves

We went into the George for lunch. As they didn't start serving until midday, we ordered soup and waited. It was duly bought and was cold!!!! We couldn't understand how first serving of day was cold? The staff took it away and was returned to us with dirty spoons on the side, no idea of who's was who's , they didn't even give us it in a clean bowl with fresh cutlery!!! Obviously stuck it in a microwave . Sadly the staff didn't really care, no apology , nothing.

This is a good place in Cranbrook to have a meal. There is a good choice on the menu, food is available all day and diets are catered for. My wife is Gluten Free and she is always able to have something to eat. The staff are friendly and helpful. There is a good choice of beer and other drinks. The George Hotel has one other thing going for it from our point of view. We have a small dog and she is allowed to be with us in the bar area.

Visited the hotel with my husband as a treat for mother’s day. My sons were joining us on the Sunday for a meal. The hotel was Ok was a little shocked to have to pay for the room before I had even seen it! Staff were polite but the room we had was a feature spa room which we paid extra for. The bath took 45mins to run and when the jacuzzi was switched on the bath filled with black bits and dirt, they obviously hadn’t cleared the filters for a long time.

I'd had The George's steak on good recommendation, so as I was staying in Ashford it was not too far to travel for dinner. On a Tuesday night the bar and restaurant weren't too busy, but the place had a good atmosphere nevertheless. The menu isn't massive, but that's not a bad thing if what's on it is getting enough of the chef's attention, and the meal was very good, and wasn't too long emerging from the kitchen. Starting with squid (fresh and hot) I moved on to the sirloin, which was done exactly as requested, a spot on medium rare. The peppercorn sauce was pretty fiery, so I was glad it came in its own jug and didn't need to be removed from the meat, and the plate was filled with a decent portion of chunky chips. A few peas or beans would have been nice as well, but no complaints about what was put in front of me.

We came in here following a funeral at the church over the road. I am a coeliac and rang about 2 weeks in advance to find out what options were available (we had to pre-order because it was a group of 10). They spoke to the kitchen and gave some options which I chose from. Ham, Egg and Chips should be fine as long as it was mentioned in the pre-order. About a week before they came back to say that the ham, egg and chips was no longer gluten free. They offered the veggie burger or risotto instead. I didn't really want either but agreed to the burger at which point they just said they would sort something out on the day. When I then turned up, the veggie burger was no longer gluten free. They offered the risotto and 2 other gluten free dishes. The only thing which had been consistently gluten free was the risotto so I went for that. It was appalling. The rice wasn't cooked, neither was the veg and there was oil on the top. It was strangely bitter and then very peppery. To top it all off I then felt terrible as this was clearly was not safe for coeliacs.

We both had the fish pie and found it was almost inedible thanks to the amount of bones we had to remove while eating. Kind of puts you off the meal! The veg to one side was still raw end all we had was parsnips. I had exactly the same meal a week before and had no issues plus there was much more veg (although still hard).

We went for a family Sunday roast and were told there was only one meat available, we weren't offered an alternative menu, when the food arrived it consisted of 2 slices of beef, 1 yorkshire pudding, half a dozen tiny carrots, 2 tiny sausages no bigger then your little finger nail, 3 bite size potatoes, 1 no stuffing ball and 3 tiny slices of parsnip, what happened to the greens. the cost £14.95 what a rip off, £9.95 would have been slightly more acceptable at a push. Had to go home and cook a proper Sunday roast to fill us up.

Last night me and my partner visited the George in Cranbrook. We have recently moved into the area and have no experience of the restaurants around as of yet, so thought we’d give one a go. We were greeted with a smile and as it was quiet offered any seat we liked. Our drinks arrived very quickly and we then placed our order for food. Starter came in about 10 minutes and the food came shortly after we’d finished the starter. Great size portions and great tasting food. We both had burgers with a side of onion rings, so can highly recommend those! Scott was our waiter and he was very friendly and helpful, and certainly gave service with a smile. We will certainly be visiting again and hope that Scott will be our waiter, as he made our experience much more pleasurable!

We visited this hotel for lunchtime refreshments again to see if it had improved since our last visit a few months ago. Sadly, we found the place to be worse than ever. The person who served us was incompetent, the table where we sat was dirty and when pointing this out to the staff a piece of paper towel was reluctantly handed to us to clean the table ourselves. Most of the fabric on the seats is soiled and stained and needs to be replaced. I had a pot if tea that was served with a dirty sugar bowl which was contaminated with old coffee stains. The last straw was when a delivery took place and several boxes were brought into the bar area where the manager decided to unpack the contents of the boxes and break them up which was noisy and filled the whole of the bar. This is totally unprofessional and we shall not be returning again. Shepherd Neame need to do something to bring this establishment up to standard .... it is in such a loveley location!!!

I took my friend for a light lunch, I ordered hand cut ham with beef tomato and English mustard on granary bread. My friend does not like mustard so I asked them to hold the mustard. This could not be done as it comes with the mustard already on the ham, but they could scrape it off. Then I am told it is ham cooked with mustard honey glaze. So where is the English mustard smeared on the ham. It seemed you cannot order ham and tomato without the ham being smeared with English mustard. We ordered something else. The portions for the cost is dreadful. Club sandwich was all bread with an unpalatable amount of mess inside. never going there again. With a pot of tea £22...…?????????

Great well trained staff. Food not bad but nothing spectacular and ate in the restaurant. Room is pretty poor. Stains on the walls, whole room looked like it could do with painting and a deep clean (pretty grotty and most surfaces were marked and stained). Stained very worn bedding, bottom sheet so worn you could see the pattern of the mattress beneath it - no mattress cover etc made me wonder what I may be laying in. Radiator did not work and on a cold night that was not good. Carpet pretty stained and felt gritty underfoot. Toilet brush was disgusting. Feels like there is no carectaken of what is the most important aspect for me. As much as the staff were great, really attentive and welcoming, I couldn’t bear to sleep in a bed and room like that again.

The veg was so nice I eat most of it. We then had desserts I had the creme brûlée which was lemon and elderflower which was amazing. Thank you so much highly recommend eating here.

Visited in December as had a client stay in the hotel which i booked. Very pretty hotel so decided to have dinner in the restaurant that night, big mistake. Firstly the dining room was freezing so we kept our coats on during dinner, when i mentioned it to the waitress she said "yes it is, isn't it". When the food came out it was extremely poor and both our starter and main came out together (liked microwaved food) and had no taste, we left it, it was that bad. Was not asked by the "waitress" how our meal was and when i told the guy going in and out of the kitchen the food was not good, he just said i will get you the bill! When you spend £171 you expect good food, or worst case scenario an apology with discount. None of this happened. Very disappointed and would unfortunately not book any of my clients to stay here again due to this reason and won't be stopping for dinner. Such a shame. Ended up going to the indian around the corner, which is great.

Looked promissing on arrival. Very small bedroom overlooking a rooftop. Perhaps reflected very reasonable price. On opening the window there were heaps of cigarette ends and an old coffee cup plus other rubbish. Seems odd no one had cleaned it up. Reasonably comfortable apart from kitchen fan which we were on top of. Asked if it could be turned off as hotel empty but were told to ask again after 10pm if it was still on!! Started again early morning. Ate in the bar a couple of evenings but basic pub food with littleimagination. However breakfast and breakfast staff was simply wonderful. An amazing selction from smoked salmon and scrambled eggs to eggs benedict plus all the usual and freshly cooked and well presented

The atmosphere was great with conversation and laughter - no loud music. Toilets were clean too. Will be back.

Visiting the area and was recommended by our B&B host. Rang in advance to book a table and we did ask if there were veggie options as one of us is vegetarian. We were told there were but not as many as the meat and fish options. When we arrived there was only one vegetarian main course of Arranchini I asked if there was anything else and was told there wasn’t much call for veggie food there. Food was okay, expensive for the portion size and served without the option for extra vegetables, salads or breads. Decidedly average
