I reviewed the Shakespeare as a 5* seven years ago, unfortunately how times have changed One of my party was coeliac but the kitchen could not confirm that anything on the menu was gluten free. To ensure they had the meal they could eat, they. They purchased some sushi from the adjoining restaurant, which shares the same courtyard, however, they were asked to leave by the Shepherd Neame management. NB: there were 20 people in our part, and all bar my one friend with coeliac disease purchased food from the Shakespeare. This was very, very disappointing. I would suggest to Shepherd Neame, that they review their menu and ensure that they have suitable food for any palette and if they cannot accommodate a food intolerance, enable a customer to bring their own food with them. I will not be returning.

Fab little pub in Canterbury, came for Lunch with my daughter as we were in the mood for a pie and mash day after walking the dogs. Well, this didn’t disappoint! My goodness, best homemade food! Highly recommend the pies, I had steak and ale and my daughter had the chicken and hock both with homemade buttery creamy mash! Let’s just say, nothing was left! Onto the lovely bay manager/owners and their lovely resident dog Rocco, all just super friendly and so accomodating. Everyone should visit this pub if you want the best service and food and well, whole experience in general

Drab, sanitised, soulless. If ‘corporate’ made a pub / service station this is what it looks and feels like. It’s just been refurbished and it’s gone backwards. Once the heartbeat of the towns social life especially Sundays. No one without a bribe would go here when any other pub is open. That’s how I ended up there, a couple of free pint tokens and a 241 meal deal, That made two fish n chips and two pints of bitter £17 and it still wasn’t worth it. There’s just nothing to enjoy in there. It’s not comfortable. There’s no connection with the staff there’s nothing on the menu that makes you look forward to it. It’s just dull and it’s a travesty of design that’s killed what was the most attractive pub in the area.

Had an excellent meal at The Royal Oak. Took advantage of their Tuesday free starter or dessert offer and had whitebait followed by a rump steak. Whitebait was excellent - very tasty and not too big. The steak was perfectly cooked to order and served with nice crispy chips with soft middles, onion rings, tomatoes. Beer was great as always. An excellent evening - thank you!

The location of this hotel is excellent - very central in Canterbury. There is parking at £15 a day at nearby multi storey. The rooms are large and bathrooms are good. The bed was a bit hard and if you felt the cold, there were no extra blankets or duvets. Rooms had large tv,ironing board and hair dryer and he hotel porvides plenty of towels and toiletries. There is a 24 hour bar with basic meals available. Good range of food at breakfast but the fruit juice is watered down- tastes more like squash than juice and the egg is reconstituted - very much doubt its fresh real eggs. The cooked food was lukewarm.

Visited Hotel Continental for a Sunday lunch. Very tasty roast beef and pork Sunday lunches. Dishes were well presented. Mains at £24 ( Jan 2025) for roasts were more expensive than a pub Sunday lunch. However we always enjoy the interesting and welcoming spacious restaurant and bar with sea views. The waitresses are both attentive and a credit to the restaurant. A pianist was providing pleasant entertainment in the bar area. The venue appears to be spotlessly decorated. Despite the stormy weather the restaurant was well heated.

I was my boyfriends plus one for his birthday voucher , we was looking forward to our special treat today . As soon as we got there we noticed straight away that a lot of tables had not been cleared .we found a seat and gave our drinks order , we waited 30 mins before the waitress came back over to us to ask if we had ordered , to which we replied were waiting for our drinks still ( we would have left if it wasn’t for they had our voucher and we needed to use it ) The two girls were rude and lazy in my opinion as the coffees were just not being done at all quickly and the other girl kept disappearing out back walking past all the dirty tables without attempting to clear them. One of the girls made an announcement to the whole place saying she was doing her best but they were under staffed but as far as I could see they were not organised or trying to serve people as I felt we were interrupting their chatting, we did not have more than one drink each . I went to the toilet and I don’t know how they can sign off it was clean as there was toilet roll all over the floor and was filthy . A red haired young man came in to start work and he turned it around getting drinks out much quicker and was far more productive. The food was nice and once we received it after 45 mins it was good but will not be buying a voucher for anyone else . Shame
