Friendly and welcoming staff from the outset. There were 7 of us in total and we all chose our own toppings for our handmade bars. There were also lots of chocolatey nibbles to eat as we crafted. We learnt how to make filled chocolates with decorative transfers and rolled truffles too! Everything was explained and demonstrated clearly and we enjoyed delicious hot drinks too. I would highly recommend this experience.

Having an evening out, beer here of course as they brew some great ales of their own. Intention of having a light dinner, well it was fantastic! Beautifully cooked, well presented and served professionally! Great experience and did I mention the beer? We will be back.

What a lovely atmosphere to meet up with friends and have a coffee or something to eat. The food is tasty and the coffee is always hot. The staff make this place and are always very helpful.

Called in late Sunday morning after long bike ride. Coffee was okay, bacon toastie not so good. Toast was limp / bit soggy from sweating on plate and bacon not really cooked, think it must have been microwaved as under cooked and more boiled than grilled, no real taste to it - disappointing. Always try to use independent cafes but on this occasion should have gone up road to Greggs.

I hired out there function room July 2024, price was reasonable for what you got, I was able to provide my own food/DJ. As for the so called “staff” half of them did not even work there they were “helping out a friend” so no bar experience at all. Had to ask them to go and buy basic fruit for drinks from Asda as there was none at all. Had to explain what drinks we wanted and what was in them. They were charging us wrong every time we bought a drink, £22 for two Hugo Sprits then £16 for one. When we asked about this they had no explanation. There seemed to be no one in charge of the function, just looked like had no clue what they were doing. The bartender Emily was the one who helped the most (as she was the only one who worked there). Would not recommend to have a function here if you want it run by people who do not know what they are doing.

Staff provided me with takeaway cups when they asked if i was sitting in and said yes and didn’t put the correct sauce inside of my cup due to this, selfish people sat in the comfiest seats with NO DRINK!!! 🤯 Staff are just incompetent and prices as always are extortionate. Not worth the prices as they do not provide you what is said on the menu

This was a Monday lunchtime meal for 6 friends, and due to a cancelled walk beforehand because of the heavy rain, we arrived very early, but as our reserved table was available we were promptly seated. Excellent start, and having been given menus, ordered drinks and placed meal orders everything was fine. Starters arrived, a couple of Garlic Mushrooms with Rustic bread looked fine. My Japanese Karaage dish ( chicken pieces in spicy batter with harissa) wasn’t great, the batter whilst crispy on the outside, was soggy inside and the chicken pieces inside were very small, not breast meat but looked like thigh. The harissa was actually a harissa inspired mayo dip, very spicy but nice for it. For main course, three of us had Sea Bass fillets with crushed garlic potatoes with a wine and cheese sauce with green beans and carrots. Very nicely presented, however I’ve never had a plated meal which was so hot ( except for oven baked lasagne, fish pie etc) in particular the potatoes which were sliced and not crushed. At a guess, the plated meals had been waiting under the heated lamps on the pass for some time whilst other meals were ready. The sea bass was rather dry because of this, but copious amounts of white wine and cheese sauce provided in a gravy boat moistened the fish nicely. However, I’d much rather have a very hot meal rather than tepid or verging on cold as I experienced on more than one occasion. Our friends had a chicken and mushroom pie (thick soggy crust), a lamb and mint pie, and a plain butterflied chicken breast, all with accompanying vegetables, everything well presented. After this we waited and waited and waited, then had to shout to the bar for dessert menus half an hour after finishing main courses. Desserts weren’t great, 3 of us had a gluten free NY baked cheesecake which was very grainy and not pleasant, the mixed berries were not defrosted properly and the ice cream was bland. Others had apple and blackberry crumble and no one managed more than half of their dish, which comprised roughly 70% crumble and 30% fruit. Unfortunately not many complements were forthcoming. Again after finishing desserts we had to shout to the bar for attention for hot drinks to finish with. Coffee was nice, but the tea drinkers weren’t impressed, there was ‘just tea’ available, no varieties, and what arrived was very weak. The cardinal sin, apart from having no Sticky Toffee pudding available was that there was no interest in clearing our dessert dishes away, and these were left in front of us until we vacated the table to pay at the bar. At this time the pub wasn’t busy and staff were more interested in chatting to themselves rather than dealing with diners. Not once throughout our meal were we asked if everything was alright with our good. Maybe they were embarrassed by the about of food left uneaten on everyone’s plates. From their website and meal descriptions it looks like The Chequers is positioning itself as a Gastro pub, but it’s nowhere near to what I’d expect. It’s difficult to pin down an identity for their cuisine, having American, Chinese, Thai, German, English, Mexican, Mediterranean, Japanese, Moroccan and Italian dishes on the menu, but my suspicion is that many of the meals are bought in meals preprepared for catering. I may be wrong here, but that’s how it looks. Overall we thought it was a less than average experience which wouldn’t be difficult to improve with a bit of attention to detail, quality over quantity and better consideration from the serving staff. Oh, and the wi-if was not working 🤷🏻‍♂️
