This was a Monday lunchtime meal for 6 friends, and due to a cancelled walk beforehand because of the heavy rain, we arrived very early, but as our reserved table was available we were promptly seated. Excellent start, and having been given menus, ordered drinks and placed meal orders everything was fine. Starters arrived, a couple of Garlic Mushrooms with Rustic bread looked fine. My Japanese Karaage dish ( chicken pieces in spicy batter with harissa) wasn’t great, the batter whilst crispy on the outside, was soggy inside and the chicken pieces inside were very small, not breast meat but looked like thigh. The harissa was actually a harissa inspired mayo dip, very spicy but nice for it. For main course, three of us had Sea Bass fillets with crushed garlic potatoes with a wine and cheese sauce with green beans and carrots. Very nicely presented, however I’ve never had a plated meal which was so hot ( except for oven baked lasagne, fish pie etc) in particular the potatoes which were sliced and not crushed. At a guess, the plated meals had been waiting under the heated lamps on the pass for some time whilst other meals were ready. The sea bass was rather dry because of this, but copious amounts of white wine and cheese sauce provided in a gravy boat moistened the fish nicely. However, I’d much rather have a very hot meal rather than tepid or verging on cold as I experienced on more than one occasion. Our friends had a chicken and mushroom pie (thick soggy crust), a lamb and mint pie, and a plain butterflied chicken breast, all with accompanying vegetables, everything well presented. After this we waited and waited and waited, then had to shout to the bar for dessert menus half an hour after finishing main courses. Desserts weren’t great, 3 of us had a gluten free NY baked cheesecake which was very grainy and not pleasant, the mixed berries were not defrosted properly and the ice cream was bland. Others had apple and blackberry crumble and no one managed more than half of their dish, which comprised roughly 70% crumble and 30% fruit. Unfortunately not many complements were forthcoming. Again after finishing desserts we had to shout to the bar for attention for hot drinks to finish with. Coffee was nice, but the tea drinkers weren’t impressed, there was ‘just tea’ available, no varieties, and what arrived was very weak. The cardinal sin, apart from having no Sticky Toffee pudding available was that there was no interest in clearing our dessert dishes away, and these were left in front of us until we vacated the table to pay at the bar. At this time the pub wasn’t busy and staff were more interested in chatting to themselves rather than dealing with diners. Not once throughout our meal were we asked if everything was alright with our good. Maybe they were embarrassed by the about of food left uneaten on everyone’s plates. From their website and meal descriptions it looks like The Chequers is positioning itself as a Gastro pub, but it’s nowhere near to what I’d expect. It’s difficult to pin down an identity for their cuisine, having American, Chinese, Thai, German, English, Mexican, Mediterranean, Japanese, Moroccan and Italian dishes on the menu, but my suspicion is that many of the meals are bought in meals preprepared for catering. I may be wrong here, but that’s how it looks. Overall we thought it was a less than average experience which wouldn’t be difficult to improve with a bit of attention to detail, quality over quantity and better consideration from the serving staff. Oh, and the wi-if was not working 🤷🏻♂️

We booked The Chequers Inn Ramby for a very special and sentimental occasion with family on 21.9.24 at 3pm. Having heard good things, we were really looking forward to trying. I really wish we hadn't bothered. Below is an honest review of our experience. The good: - staff were alright. - drinks were good - the place was clean - we didn't sit outside but it looked nice by the river - chips were nice The bad: - food was, at best, adequate and quite expensive. The main meals were OK. But nothing sparkling. Really dissapointed. Steak wasn't cooked great. The ugly: -The WORST garlic mushrooms I've ever experienced in my life. Mushrooms sliced with lazy garlic thrown on top, put in a pan and then spewed up onto a slice of rock hard bread. Avoid. I couldnt eat it, it just tasted sour. I did tell the waitress that it wasn't very nice. The above word spewed is not used accidentally here.. It looked as thought it had been spewed up. - An adequate 'sorry about that' when a complaint was put it. But nothing further. I couldn't be bothered to make a fuss to be honest. It wasn't the day for it as already mentioned we went for a very sentimental occasion. I'd never return here again, even if someone paid the bill. Unfortunately now we live in a world where everything is SO expensive. To have to pay around £80 for a below average meal is where the disappointment is. Avoid.

We visited yesterday on a booking made by our friends. None of us had visited before. Welcoming, knowledgeable and efficient staff. Food freshly served and such a change to have it accompanied by a salad that was not full of raw peppers and red onion. Would definitely recommend to others and hopefully we will return when we are next in this neck of the woods N.b. - I would recommend the chicken and chorizo fajitas but was reliably informed the other 3 dishes were excellent

Met with friends for a catch-up. Pre-booked. Couldn’t be considered bad but not exactly friendly. Very brusque and to the point. No pleasantries and didn’t feel particularly welcome. When I requested a coffee after our meal the response was “only have decaf” no alternative offered or apology! Overall food o.k. Enjoyed what I had. Dessert prices a little steep, £7.45 for a pre-bought tart which was advertised as caramel apple cobbler!! Lovely setting but lose points on service and the ‘welcome’

Arrived around 1pm on a Monday which is normally a quiet time for restaurants so didn’t bother to book which turned out to be a mistake as we walked into the pub and sat at an empty table only to be told it was fully booked but there was room in the down stairs room which was accessible by some stone steps, not very convenient for my obviously disabled wife but she said she could manage it. I’m glad we stayed, the food was excellent, I had the teriyaki beef and my wife had fish chips and peas. We were served by a very amiable young man and we shall certainly visit again

I have really debated about this review, but in the end felt compelled to say something. Last night we went for a meal at the Chequers, a much anticipated get together with friends. Two of us ordered the fish pie, technically it was quite tasty, however, the fish still had the skin on!, something I've never ever seen before in fish pie, it was gross. I queried this with the man who asked how our meal was. He said he would check with the kitchen. Apparently 'this is how it's delivered by the fishmonger, as a pre done fish pie mix', we just add potatoes and cheese 😳. I'll be honest, we did eat as much as we could, perhaps on reflection should have sent it back. My friend also had fish scales and bones in hers. At a cost of £15.45, this is not acceptable, it's lazy. We did complain but nothing was done, no reduction or even offer of a complimentary coffee 🤷🏻♀️ It will be a while before I consider returning to eat. If you love a good fish pie, I suggest avoiding the Chequers until they change their ingredients!!

We have been going to the Chequers for years but we are certainly not regulars. Food always quite good along with staff etc. But called in with Family last Sunday for a drink following an afternoon walk with our sons new girlfriend to be confronted on entrance by a really rude man with a beard, asking if we'd booked. I replied with "it's ok we're just wanting a drink." He wasn't welcoming at all and if we hadn't of got new family friends with us at the time I would of asked him if he had a problem with us/I. I assume this guy is the manager??? Would recommend he works in an alternative industry. He's rude and I found him ignorant. Don't think we'll be returning whilst he's there tbh.

We came here for Sunday lunch with friends. 3 of us went for the roast beef dinner which came with roast and mash potatoes. Yorkshire pudding. Cabbage and carrots and gravy. The beef was thickly sliced and everything was delicious. Our friend gad the vegetarian option which was butternut squash roast which she said was excellent. The food came quite quickly. No complaints. I’d happily come again.

We decided to call in here for a drink after an 8 mile walk as is our routine as a group of seven walkers. Other members of the group had been here before and spoke very highly of the food and service. I am not sure what had gone wrong that day but to say the reception we recieved was decidedly "frosty" is an understatement. We were told brusquely to "sit at the tall tables for drinks" Coffee when ordered with the drinks we were told "food has priority and there's only two of us on, so there will be a wait" Both bar staff were rude and unfriendly, a lesson in customer service would not come amiss. Needless to say due to this the Inn has lost a potential 7 customers.

I don't know what has happened to The Chequers Inn. We have had lunch here about once a month for at least two years and always spoken very highly of the food and service. We visited yesterday at first all seemed well, we were quickly seated and our order taken. When the food arrived my veggie lasagne was as good as it usually is, my husbands fish was even smaller than usual, his mushy peas were like a lump of green stodge. We both ordered chips which looked as though they had been cremated. The place was not busy so the kitchen staff were not rushed. During our meal for the first time ever at the Chequers nobody came to ask if the meal was okay. After the meal nobody cleared the table while we were finishing drinks, nor did anybody ask if we wanted a dessert. When we paid the lady on the till asked if everything was okay, I replied that no it wasn't and the chips should never have left the kitchen. she said she was sorry and she would let the kitchen know. It was quite clear that she didn't really care. Such a shame but maybe that is why the place was almost empty.

We visited yesterday as a party of four. We were looking to eat in the outdoor area but would have been happy to have a drink only if the pub was busy. We waited at the entrance as requested and could see that the outside area was fairly quiet with plenty of available tables and additional bench seating at the canal side. We were approached by a member of staff who seemed unsure whether she could let us have a table and went back inside to seek advice three separate times. We were then advised that they were only allowing pre-booked visitors. I asked whether we could have a drink rather than eat and sit on the benches that were free. The member of staff declined without explanation. I can understand that there may be stricter rules to follow during COVID, however, they two staff that we spoke to offered no explanation or apology and were quite abrupt. There is nothing on the website in regards to a requirement for pre-booking and although we were keen to try the pub, after moving to the area, we will go elsewhere in future. Poor service and experience overall.

We enjoyed a late afternoon meal on 26th May. It was an important family occasion - the first time we had all been together in this way since my father died a year ago to the day. We all enjoyed it, from a 15 year old to an 82 year old. The food was good, the service excellent and we felt very safe from a Covid perspective. Our waiter (I think he was called Seb) was lovely. One of our dessert portions was very small compared to the others and we politely flagged it up. It was dealt with extremely well - and Seb came back with not one but two bigger portions, which went down very well!! It will give us something to smile about for time to come...Thank you. Usually a good meal here, but the menu has been cut to a disappointing level. Table of 4 where 3 had Tex Mex chicken-this was ok but not particularly hot. We didn't send the meals back as they would simply have been blasted in the microwave. I had the salmon salad which had obviously been made quite a while before and then taken out of a fridge (nearly a freezer!) just before serving-this made it uncomfortable to eat and tasteless. This was really disappointing as 2 friends had joined us who we had told about how good the food is-how surprising that a place can go downhill so quickly: we had a really good meal here only a few weeks ago.

We asked the bar person if we were ok to come in for a drink, she replied with “I’ll have to speak to my manager first,” she came back a couple of minutes later and told us that they were only taking bookings, even though there was virtually no one in the pub, or sitting outside. The quality of the food was outstanding...cooked beautifully and a fantastic portion size!......The 18oz Rump is a bargain! The kitchen team did a great job getting our food out to us in good time and we couldn’t fault either dish, the front of house team really were fantastic in making sure we wanted for nothing...making sure our drinks were not sat empty! The management team are doing a fantastic job with a young team that gave us first class service throughout our visit....I really cannot speak highly enough for the effort and care given in a time when most establishments struggle to give good service! My wife and I have been here for a meal on several occasions and have always had good food and excellent service. On our latest visit we noticed that there had been a change of staff and it now appears to be run by a group of teenage girls! We had booked a table and on arrival was told number 30 down stairs! When found our table and were seated a waitress arrived to take our drinks order. Our drinks arrived promptly and we wanted a few more minutes to decide on the food (so far so good) We were then forgotten about for a good 10 minutes or so before we were able to order. When we did eventually order our starters and mains were both excellent as always. Meals finished and now for the dessert. The waitress passed our table 4 times to bring desserts to a family of 8 but not once did she ask if we would like desserts or remove our empty plates. The waitress then brought desserts to the table next to us and again left our empty plates. After waiting almost 20 minutes after finishing our meal we decided to leave. I appreciate they were busy but at the time when we were waiting to order desserts the majority of customers had been served and three of the waitresses stood chatting behind the bar. When paying the bill I was asked if everything was alright to which I replied "yes the meal was excellent but we were hoping to have desserts but no one was interested in clearing away the plates or offering us a dessert menu" The waitress said I'm sorry about that and said I can order you one now which I refused as my wife and I had our coats on and were ready to leave. She again said she was sorry and was full of apology's.We will return in a few weeks time and see if they are any better organised. This is an excellent pub with excellent food but let down I feel by inexperinced staff.

We were asked if we had booked a table and replied yes. We were told we were in the down stairs restaurant at table 27 and to go down and our drinks would be served at the table. We went down to find every table numbered but ours. We stood around for a while waiting for one of the members of staff to come from behind the counter. None did so we eventually occupied the only remaining table, which rocked like a ferry on the Irish sea and had a notice on it saying it was further booked at 4 and 6 o'clock. After 10 minutes I stopped a passing waitress and asked if our drinks were ready. She asked what we would like so I ordered again. Our drinks arrived at 2.10. Flat Carling in a warm glass, lemonade ordered with no ice but could sink the Titanic and a Guiness with a touch of black that was purple.Whats more the rest of our party had not arrived so I phoned them to be told they had been seated in the upstairs bar at 1.55PM.We eventually got sat around the ferry, sorry table, and after a while a waitress came across whilst removing her chewing gum and took our order which included two steaks, one medium and one rare, and requested more drinks. The drinks arrived as ordered!!The meals arrived and, apart from the steaks being on the wrong plates with the wrong sides, was delicious and well presented. The cauliflower cheese looked nice but we did not have a spoon to serve it and by the time we got a waitresses attention to bring us one it was cold (the cauliflower cheese I mean - but on second thoughts perhaps both but aho, I had asked her to do something)The last thing you expect when you go out for a meal is to eat against the clock but 4'0'clock was looming and the 4 of our party who ordered sweats only just managed to get them served in before the dead line so we over ran by 5 minutes. We left the table as soon as possible and went upstairs for a drink. The only table available was littered with the last customers debris but we sat down whilst my Son went to the bar. A male waiter came to the table and handed me the bill and told us we would have to move on as they were fully booked with meals and could not accommodate us for drinks.I took the bill to the bar and after 5 minutes eventually got someones attention and was asked to move down to the card machine which is located next to the hatch to gain access to the bar. I inserted my card and was told "if it asks you for cashback to leave a tip and you don't want it just press cancel"At that moment in time the waitress who had served us came up from what I presume is staff only area at the end of her shift and brushed passed me without even an excuse me.I pressed cancel. The experience totally ruined a family get together. We went on to the Scarborough Arms in Tickhill and had a wonderful time in the tap room which was more accommodating, enjoyable, relaxing and run by people who appreciate the business is run for the customers.

We went today with only an hour due to heavy bookings. They sorted a table for us within 5 mins. My wife hade Sunday roast with turkey medium size, ( large med. Small are offered) l went fot butterfly chicken with bacon and cheese. When it arrived Wow! The roast had three large thick slices of turkey, roast pots, carrots, Yorkshire pud and gravy. My wife said she ate the yorky fist because it was so tasty. She called the waitress asked for cranberry sauce they delivered a large helping of it unlike most resturants. My meal was excellent, included two lovely crist slices of garlic bread. Chip in basket were best l have had there for a long time. Brown crispy soft centre. The onion rings were well cooked and not greasy.

Booked a table for Thursday 2 Jan. Whilst being presented with the menus by the waitress (which was all a bit too much trouble for her) she proceeded to advise the menu items which were not available. It was have been easier to say what they did have. Food we ordered was very basic, poorly presented and not particularly tasty. Pretty costly for what we actually ended up ordering. The general cleanliness of the whole place left a lot to be desired!

Would not recommend this place at all, avoid at all costs ! We Visited before Xmas... food was shocking, staff rude ...most of them hanging around the bar on the phone ! Food orders messed up so we was eating at all different times after pre ordering ! Tables all odd and chairs all sat at different levels ! The room was cold the place was empty .... something we noticed straight away on arrival , not a good sign. Food was not fresh stingy meat, cold in the middle and stale bread !

me and my wife decided to have a bite to eat at the hidden pub in the small village ranby, first we got there and it was dead as this was during mid week. we ordered off the 2 for 1 menu. i ordered beef lasagne and tasting it to find it was cold in the middle and warm on the edges was disappointing it was like a microwave meal banged on the plate, the garlic bread that came with this was rock hard. my wifes dinner however was average she had sausage and mash. i did complain and recieved a warm dinner afterwards but then it left me eating at different times with my wife. whilst eating we did spot two young ladies on their phones giggling taking pictures of eachother i presume and messing around which is very unexperienced and unprofesional infront of customers weather they was on a break or not it just didnt look acceptable whilst standing behind a bar in work uniform.

cannot fault the food but service was very poor. 17 people attending and despite pre ordering they got order wrong and only set table for 16. they had obviously had a very large works do prior to our sitting and all I can say is it showed as staff, although we not out and out rude, I have to say they looked as if they had cracked a pleasant smile it would have broken them. I appreciate the previous sitting would no doubt of been a big challenge but it was unfair of our booking to take the brunt of it. we literally got one word answers when we asked for another setting, bemused looks with no apology when they brough out food we had not even ordered and not so much as a sorry for one of our meals coming out when everyone else had half eaten theres. the venue is beautiful and big enough to take large bookings but i think its safe to say they could not cope with the previous booking to ours and we were not in my opinion given anywhere near a good experience which is a real shame as it was our works xmas dinner too . on a saving grace note the staff upstsairs were a complete contrast and extremely welcoming and accomodating, just wish they had been serving us

We were taken here by our friends. We were going to travel home a four hour drive and so we appreciated the excellent friendly quick service we received. Very nice food served hot and with a smile. Sunday lunch was available with very huge Yorkshire puddings. Veg was well prepared. Menu easy to choose without it being too big. We had a very good lunch

So we,both chose steak and it wasn’t them best choice. Sirloin was fab but peppercorn sauce was too much and rump with scampi - wasn’t cooked as requested. Asked for medium rare and was definitely rare. Shame as lovely pub.

I've dined here several times but this was the first time for Sunday lunch. As we waited for our table the dinners coming out looked amazing, I duly ordered a large roadt beef meal as did 2 others of our party. Beef was delicious, Yorkshire puddings massive but quite dry. Poorly made gravy from granules, I would have poured it down the sink at home, granules weren't dissolved at all. Powdered mash and frozen cauliflower used for the cauliflower cheese which was really disappointing. I found the effort I needed to put in I.e. ask for extra gravy (none on yorkshires) ask for some cauliflower cheese, ask for cutlery....... was too much, staff are friendly but don't have skills in servicing the needs of customers and pre-empting needs

Visited last Sunday. Three of us had Sunday Roast, which was delicious. Service was fantastic. Only tiny downside was how the management can justify charging 50p for a dash of lemonade in a pint of lager!

Staying in Blyth for one night we went on the search for a pub that served food. What a lovely find. It was absolutely rammed but was a bank holiday. Beer was £3.20 a pint so standard and we had 2 baguettes with chips which can to £17. Which again was standard but food very tasty. Staff very busy so seemed a abut moody and it was hot but apart from that would def come back.

Myself and the wife booked in for our table at 7pm and having ordered drinks decided to sit outside by the canal and enjoy the evening sun. Having decided on steaks we thought we would enjoy our spot and eat outside too, and ordered the 8oz sirloin and the 16oz t-bone. Service was prompt, friendly and efficient, and even though they were starting to get busy it was not long before our food arrived, and cooked exactly as requested.

We arrived for a family meal for 6 having booked a few weeks earlier explaining one person has coeliac disease, the staff assured us that this was easily catered for. We had a lovely table with plenty of room, and were soon served drinks to the table, and made our choices from the menu. The person not not able to partake of the usual menu chose new potatoes instead of chips to go with their gammon and pineapple and asked that seperate utensils be used to avoid cross contamination.

We visited this place on a long weekend away. Didn't realise we had to book and were turned away on or first attempt. However, were able to have lunch there the next day. A special mention to Kat - very pleasant and definitely, really was service with a smile.

On our journey from Suffolk to Yorkshire, we decided to leave the A1 in search of a pub for lunch. We weren't disappointed. We found The Chequers Inn down by the canal in a beautiful location. Lovely sunny day so me and my friend decided to go out for lunch at which he suggested Chequers, never been before but what a gem. Jamie served us upon arrival with a welcoming smile and when we inquired about lunch he promptly gave us menus and suggested the homemade pie, which we ordered and wasn't disappointed. It was very tasty and filling and at the low price of £12 for 2 meals it was bargain city. Beautiful outside (and inside) space, very relaxing and the staff were very attentive. Definitely returning and will be recommending the Chequers to all my friends.

Great coffee. Poor service. Six customers stood waiting for coffees to be made. One girl working her butt off trying to make coffees and hand food out whilst another girl just stood behind the till doing nothing, a man disappeared on his break and two other girls outside having a cigarette. Need I say more 🙄

Booked to stay on fri 8th for two nights. The manager asked me to pay in cash, which I did. He then sent me a confirmation of my booking. Before I booked I asked that I had the option to cancel, as I wasn’t 100 percent sure I’d need the room. He assured me that cancellation would be fine, as long as it was 48hrs before booking in. I then decided to cancel the next day, which was on Tuesday, as I no longer needed the room. I was told a refund was not possible. I then forwarded my email confirmation, which has in bold writing the right for me to cancel and full refund made possible. I then embarked on a full night of back and forward excuses why a refund wasn’t possible. Even receiving a mistaken txt, sent to me, instead of his manager. Stating there was no policy in place but he suggested 70% refund (how convenient) 🤣 Eventually I got 70% of the cash back paid into my account. Again, I requested the full refund as per my entitlement. And I just received more silly excuses and nonsense. Such as the manager was a good person and a lawyer by trade. Avoid this hotel at all costs. Ran by cowboys.

Dreadful experience. For a 24 hour service to be greeted by an employee, Karina, laying on a sofa with her feet up and on her phone took me by surprise. To then be grunted at that she was on her break led me to abandon any notion of getting service here.

My wife, 2 children and visiting relatives went to your cafe today. And I was absolutely astounded by the poor service and lack of communication. We arrived at around 10:20 and was seated outside, we had our drinks order taken and breakfast order, but was told the kitchen was quite busy so to expect a slight wait… What we was not told was that the slight wait would turn into not getting our food until gone 11:40. When I got up to ask the young man who was serving how long the breakfast would be, he replied saying they stop serving breakfast at 11:30 not realising we had ordered already he said it shouldn’t be much longer (no apology given for the wait). And even then some of the food was cold, and the bacon my wife had was inedible. Will definitely not be returning
