I hired out there function room July 2024, price was reasonable for what you got, I was able to provide my own food/DJ. As for the so called “staff” half of them did not even work there they were “helping out a friend” so no bar experience at all. Had to ask them to go and buy basic fruit for drinks from Asda as there was none at all. Had to explain what drinks we wanted and what was in them. They were charging us wrong every time we bought a drink, £22 for two Hugo Sprits then £16 for one. When we asked about this they had no explanation. There seemed to be no one in charge of the function, just looked like had no clue what they were doing. The bartender Emily was the one who helped the most (as she was the only one who worked there). Would not recommend to have a function here if you want it run by people who do not know what they are doing.

Retford Charter day 2024 - closed. No bar. Sad. Golden Opportunity to make lots of money wasted.

Booked our family in for Mothers Day lunch online. Received a confirmation by email from them and looked forward to our day out with Mum. Having driven the 80 miles picked up mum and arrived in Retford only to find that The Kings Park Hotel (The Old Police Station) doesn’t have a restaurant.

We booked 2 rooms here for one night. Parking is very close by and free until 10am. A pleasant check in was followed by quite a bizarre room. First impressions of our room was big enough for our needs with a very nice sized bathroom. We then noticed another door in the corner of our room, there was no lock on the door so we were confident that it wasn’t a connecting door to another room, assuming it to be maybe a storage cupboard or similar we tried to open it. It opened about 4 inches and then hit an obstruction on the other side. My wife went into the hallway to see what doors were next to ours and found an unmarked, unlocked door down the corridor from us. The mystery door gave way to a small unmade bed, a pile of clothes and sandals and a chest of drawers, which was what was obstructing our connecting door. From the basic look of the room we assume it was the reception man’s bedroom. Pretty freaked out we went back to our room where my wife used the loo, only to have the cold tap fall apart when she went to wash her hands. Not wanting to create a fuss we used the table from the room and some other objects to prop under the joining room door handle. As we were leaving for dinner that evening we mentioned to reception about the mystery door, the man in reception didn’t know that we’d found where the door went and told us not to worry and that the other side was locked so no one would be able to access our items. We’d propped the handle so felt comfortable enough. We also mentioned the tap and were told very matter of factly that it was broken by the last guests. No offer to get it fixed or apology. We asked about food in the hotel, but that unfortunately is no longer an option apart from breakfast. A nice meal in town and then back to the hotel. Settled down for the night and all pretty peaceful apart from hearing the snores of the reception guy next door ( maybe the door could be soundproofed as well as a lock fitted). Little things that could be improved - 2 plastic cups, seriously, how much would 2 glasses cost ? Breakfast - run out of a few items and didn’t really have many items in the first place. A lovely dining area though that should be used more. Our other family member had a pleasant stay in their room, but did comment on the urine on the underside of the toilet seat that hadn’t been cleaned when she went in. Room good though apart from that so just an oversight ? She also had 2 glass glasses. Overall an ok stay, we wouldn’t come back though if we found ourselves in the area again, which is a shame as we did get the impression that they’ve tried hard to make it as nice as possible there.

Very quirky but very different place it was chosen as a Christmas function and I would say it went down well

Booked the venue for my birthday in October! I had initial reservations when they told me they no longer had kitchen staff and I needed to use outside caters. Following recent reviews, and a number of negative posts on Facebook, I rang to speak to the manager for reassurances. Gill answered informed me the manager had left. Based on this, I asked for my deposit back and was told it would take a week to process. Nearly a month later I’m still chasing payment of the deposit and keep getting fobbed off with excuses. Avoid at all costs.

Lovely place to visit with my family , very clean , staff are lovely and very attentive. Food is beautiful , recommend this place to friends and family and the public 👍

What a shame this lovely quirky bar is so low in the reviews. The lady behind the bar was soooo lovely and friendly and explained why no food was available due to staff sickness. When we showed an interest in the building she was happy to chat and show us the facilities available for private events . Drinks were priced as expected and we all agreed we would return when next in Retford.

We visited the venue for a family function, not been from retford ourselfs and living over an hour away I phoned the venue the day before the event to check they sold plain cider as I do not like fruit flavoured ones and due to intollarances can not drink lager. We arrived at 8pm and were told they had no plain cider only fruit flavoured ciders in bottles. They had no bitter and shortly after ran out of lager too. We tried a coke but it was served from a jug and was warm and flat. We were looking forward to the evening spending time with family and friends celebrating but unfortunately we left early due to the poor service from the venue not been able to provide any drinks we liked. Drinks were not cheap so after been charged £11.10 for a vodka and flat coke and a small bottle of cloudy lemonade I was surprised to witness management removing glasses from tables that still had drinks in along with the emptys they were collecting, people were dancing and out in the smoking area I'm sure were also surprised to return and find their drinks missing.

We were invited to a family engagement party at this venue, to which everyone was really excited about and looking forward to, so much so that we booked a room for the overnight stay. We checked in to find the room less than desirable as dust and cobwebs present The night started well and everyone enjoying the function and festivities until approx 9:30 pm when the bar ran out of draught beer and cider, at this time we were forced to drink overpriced bottled beer or spirits. The coke and lemonade used as mixers for the spirits were poured from jugs and were flat, which spoiled the drinks entirely I really felt the disappointment of the host and hostess who were to say the least embarrassed about the whole situation, and could not apologise enough to their guests. The venue had no remorse when complaints were made and did not even give a discount for the more expensive drinks only to residents

Rooms absolutely disgusting!! Full of thick dust!! If you touch the light shade the dust fell off onto the bed it is filthy! Do not stay here you will be disgusted at the cleanliness and poor management!

Great service and friendly staff

We have just hot back from a two day stay in retford. Eight of us stayed here as we had stayed before and were more than happy to go back. We were met by a lovely young man who booked us in and served us all weekend. When we got in the room all looked OK but the end of the hoover was left on the floor. Anyone can mislay something so I returned it to the desk downstairs. When I got into the bathroom yo have a shower inclosed the door and there was a pile of dust and cobwebs were it had obviously not been cleaned. There was a towel left on the back of the door that had been used by someone else! There was one sachet of coffee, two teabags and one small milk! The cleaners came In the second day and literally just tucked the sheets in, didn't put anything in the room to make a drink as you normally would expect, the cups were just left aswell. We came back to the bar about 10-45pm to have one last drink but were told we couldn't have one as there was a wedding in the other part of the hotel! There were No guests st the bar, in fact there was nobody to be seen. We only wanted one last drink but were told we would have to take it to our rooms! Which really wasn't acceptable. On arriving we were told we couldn't have cooked breakfast either as they didn't have a chef! If we had known all this we definitely wouldn't have booked again. The hotel has definitely gone downhill since our last visit. Its a good job they are not on four in a bed now as they would honestly Come last. They young man on reception and behind the bar is a credit to them polite and friendly but I'm sure he will eventually get fed up of the complaints. The last straw was when we went upto bed and we passed room one, the stench of marujana was terrible. We won't be going back and would advise anybody else to try somewhere else. Such a shame! Lovely place for a drink and to chill

Haha brought back old memories of my time in no2 cell back in the 80s but the food great cooked properly! Lovely meals fish n chips to die for not the cheapest but sometimes it doesnt matter eh nice staff in fact 10/10

The first server was great, the second one was not so. however the Bubble and Squeak consisted of bland jumbo “chip shop sausage “ cut in half on a modest portion of bubble and squeak, the accompanying onion gravel was very very salty That said the bacon burger was very good and both meals were hot.

Called in on Thursday 18th May for breakfast. Despite the austere and vaguely unwelcome exterior, the inside of the restaurant is a joy. Clean, light and very contemporary with a pleasant courtyard. Received a friendly professional welcome ... Cream with my coffee and a five star breakfast! It takes a real chef to produce a handsome breakfast! Thanks ... Made my visit a real pleasure.

Sat with friends whilst they waited for food which was a very long time. Meals not readily available before 6pm??? Food was cold when it arrived and they were the only ones in the restaurant.......

Organised a hen party here and we had such great service from start to finish! Beautifully decorated, excellent food and a wonderful atmosphere. Really enjoyed the Sunday lunches and the vegetarian option of butternut squash, beetroot and feta stack was incredible. Thank you!

We had our wedding reception at the old police station and wow wow wow. Staff were amazin the food out of this world not one of our guests said anythin bad all said amazin. We even had the rooms and they were really nice and the breakfast was amazin. Thank you so much for making our day so special and we was glad to see the the bar staff joining in dancing. Once again thank you again for everythin and pls carry on the good work we all loved it and anyone else thinking about booking it webwould say its a no brainer

Weekend function wedding and christening party. From the housekeeper ‘Claire’ downwards all staff friendly helpful and efficient. We were welcomed warmly and assisted whenever necessary. Surprisingly good food both in quality, and price. Why surprisingly? Over several years-, We have previously stayed in some 4./ and 5 stars but all tend to fall short of their claims.

Brilliant night at private party last Saturday 11th March. Food excellent and staff very friendly, professional and helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed the atmospheric and welcoming venue.

Had a wonderful breakfast at this loverly place , Fresh ingredients, sausages were very tasty, Quick efficient service , a good choice, I chose the smaller breakfast and there was plenty my friend had the advocardos with egg and toast, and said it was lovely, reasonably priced, highly recommend.

Could not fault it. I attended for a family 80th party and the staff couldn’t do enough for us! We didn’t order from the menu but as it was an event they put a Buffett on for us and it was amazing! Sandwhiches, sliders, pizzas, spring rolls, salad, chicken satay, sausage rolls and much more all of which was yummy! Great selection of drinks from the bar also! The venue itself is clean and tidy and the history of the place is well kept as the cell doors kept the venue a fun place to visit! I will definitely return and have already recommended to many!

I was a bit worried about staying here due to some of the negative reviews but I shouldn’t have worried. We stayed in the bridal suite which was lovely and clean (apart from a couple of spider webs higher up, however it’s that time of year the spiders are obviously on a mission and you’ll find the same everywhere… not a deal breaker) We have the Prosecco and truffles as a treat for my birthday. The Prosecco was lovely ( I’m really fussy) and the truffles were amazing, we had 6 between us you really didn’t need anymore than that! I made use of the roll top bath (which does not leak). The bar was very busy downstairs when we arrived but we could hear nothing in our room and we were quite close as well. It was lovely and quiet overnight. The cocktails are lovely (best daiquiri I have ever had). The building is wonderful, I loved the decoration and how they have embraced its previous use. The staff were so helpful and polite. A lovely lady had no issues checking us and then showing me round the old cells when I asked where they were. We didn’t eat here, we went to Dante’s. However, from what I’ve seen I’d love to come back again and have dinner as well. Plus for £85 a night it’s an absolute bargain. Thank you for having us.

We had a lovely meal, really tasty spaghetti bolognese, the ingredients were all fresh, the sweet potato chips were soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. Very good presentation. Staff were welcoming and professional.

We stayed at the attached hotel to attend an event in Retford. There is a review on their page as the two experiences were very different and justify, in our opinion the separation. Having checked in we were told the restaurant was not open that evening, but the bar was. This was disaappointing as we planned to eat there because it has good reviews and was convenient. We decided to get drinks there and research alternative dining options. As we approached the bar, the lady behind said she would be one minute. She approached two gentlemen at one of the tables and as she did so one of them just shook his head a her. She returned to us and informed us that she could not serve us anything alcoholic. When my wife asked why, she looked very sheepish and seemed to struggle for an answer, again glancing to the two men, before saying there were licensing issues. It all seemed a little cloak and dagger, and very awkward, not to mention a further inconvenience to us. In the morning we went downstairs to breakfast. We were greeted by the same lady from the night before and seated, and a short while later she came for our drinks order. She took this and said she would return for our food order. After serving another couple their food, she did just that. She informed us that the options were any combination of a full English breakfast componants, which we could work with, but there was no menu offering the kinds of options seen in previous reviews. My wife ordered scrambled eggs on brown toast, I ordered the full English with no tomato and a poached egg. She took this order to the kitchen, and to the best of my knowledge they were only cooking our order at that time. I could see no one else waiting for food. After about ten minutes the young chap in the kitchen placed two plates on the counter with some food on, I couldn't see what. A minute or two later he spooned scrambled egg onto one of the plates. After about another five minutes the lady asked if she could serve the plates, to be told one needed some bacon on it. After both plates had been sat for twenty minutes, he added the poached egg to mine and we were served! There was no apology for the wait. There were no condiments of any kind on the table. I asked for butter for my toast, which was duly delivered, but no offer of anything else ie brown or red sauce, salt or pepper. We had obviously both finished our drinks, and weren't offered any top up, in fact after delivering the butter, the lady dissappeared. Obviously all of the food, with the exception of the poached egg was cold, not even warm, cold. The beans with mine had a thick skin on the top. The toast on which my wifes scrambled eggs were spooned was actually burnt black in parts, and had no butter on it. It was without doubt the worst breakfast experience we have had anywhere. We both tried around two mouthfuls, the second only really to confirm how bad it was, before getting up to leave. As we did so, I looked for someone to complain to, but there was no-one to be seen. We collected our belongings from the room and I looked again for someone in the resturant with the same result. We went to reception to leave the room card, and one of the gentlemen from the bar the previous eveing was there. I expected him to ask if everything had been alright, but he just smiled and said 'enjoy your day' This experience in the bar and restaurant was an absolute farce. The young man doing the breakfast seemed to only be able to focus on preparing one ingedient at a time, barely! The lady seemed to be embarrassed about the whole situation, as would I have been but also a little apologetic at least. Not running and hiding having just given someone the worst breakfast ever. If I must pick some positive from this, the place is very nice and the ingredients of my breakfast looked to be of a good quality. I'm inclined to think we unfortunately caught them on a particularly difficult time, looking at previous reviews and I genuinely hope this is the case. None of which defends however, the appaling service we experienced on our visit.

Extremely disappointed… staff behind the bar totally incompetent and generously rude. Whilst in the middle of serving a number of our group … decided to ignore the rest and serve someone else who had just walked in through the door. This was a repeated occurrence and the last person in our group was served 20 mins later than everyone else. When we approached to complain he just said “I’m new”.

No Xmas atmosphere, no lovely food cooking smells, waited half hour for drinks, veg hard, turkey was plastic texture, no cranberry sauce, plates cold and sat on side a while before dinner was served. So for £20 i had 1 bite of turkey, 1 bite of roast potato and 1 sprout then Xmas pudding and custard. Cleaners walked past food serving area with dirty linen.

Had Christmas Dinner payed alot of money for a Bernard Matthews turkey roll thats what it taste like very hard veg. The stuffing had a nasty taste. No cramberry sauce no Christmas spirit from the staff.

Had a table booked for 1930, in fact it was booked by my friend who was staying at the Hotel itself. Arrived on time only to be told there was no booking and despite the place being almost empty they couldn't fit us in, despite the fact my friend was staying in the hotel! They really do try hard to help you out. I have not eaten here for a long time, due to previous reviews, but the staff are excellent, and cannot do enough for you.

Very high standard of breakfast and vfm (£9.50 including hot drink and plenty of toasted rustic bread). High quality local produce, well cooked and piping hot. Great veggie version with quorn sausage and halloumi. Good service

We enjoyed a drink in this smart and attractive bar with friendly and professional staff. Making the most of the fine weather we chose the sunny side of the courtyard and sank into the comfortable seats. Vegan friendly drinks are available but unfortunately the food options are limited apart from possibly one sharing platter. It appears that this establishment has not tuned in to the growing vegan and plant based revolution.

Sorry to post this bad review as it was recommended. We both ordered the Roast Sirloin of beef for Sunday lunch,which was superb but it was cut like a steak. The Yorkshire pudding again was great. However the vegetables, even though there were a lot of them, were a bit odd. I saw the chef serve other customers vegetables from a frying pan on the service bay. Mangetout, green beans along with cauliflower cheese came separate.The whole meal was luke warm and we should have sent it back but we were hungry. When this was mentioned to the waitress, her answer was that the chef was new and she didnt understand that the plate warmer wasnt working. Wont be visiting again

We had a beautiful meal here last night, I had the courgette and tomato tarte tatin which was absolutely gorgeous. We also had the goats cheese and also salmon and prawn cocktail starters, beef and Guinness pie and chicken plus sticky toffee pudding and there wasn’t a thing that could be improved, it was utterly gorgeous. Great cocktails too and the service was grear. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is that the atmosphere could do with a bit of improvement, a few candles etc would help. Otherwise fantastic though- thanks!

Booked for a catch up with friends. Service was good, the staff couldn’t be more attentive. Food was brilliant and the atmosphere was relaxed.

Nice but not special . I had the linguini & it was lacklustre . Mums pie was fine . I thought for eat out to help Out - £77 quid for what we had wasn’t a bargain

A good place to stay for visiting local area we went to Sherwood Forest Lincoln. We brought are bikes with us and they kept them safe in their garage. All the staff are very friendly helpful and attentive thank you to you all the chef food is very good. We had room 10 overlooking the old courtyard. Did not know when we booked that the place was winner of 4 in a bed which was on aired Meach 2020. Thank you to all the team we had a lovely stay.

I booked a table on 12th Aug for the purposes of eating... however we chose not to eat after being informed that the freezer wasn’t working, therefore some tapas items weren’t available on the menu. This was very off putting as we could have been told a little earlier i.e before we sat down at our table and before we ordered drinks. The menu was slightly limited and would have liked to see a house burger on the menu and perhaps another steak option. That being said the restaurant staff that evening were friendly and attentive. We decided to stay for a few more drinks. We have always been impressed with the decor and the character of the building. We had a table just opposite the kitchen and observed that the chef looked focused and was working hard on his own. I may be wrong but It just felt that the kitchen was understaffed. I’m guessing the 8pm sitting would have been busier than our 5.30 slot. The Covid practices were good with a one way system in place.In SummaryWe have attended the Police Station when the night markets have been held and have always had a great time. Despite our underwhelming experience last evening we will be booking again in the future and hoping this was an off night and that the experience next time is much better.

We were very impressed with the setup for home deliveries during lockdown. We went for lunch today, celebrating a birthday. The welcome and entry to the restaurant was warm, friendly and completely safe with social distancing easy to follow and supported by the staff.Table service was faultless and you have the option to add to your order via text. One way system to the toilets. The food is amazing! I had by far the best quiche ever, smoked salmon and fennel, delicious. This is a real gem so don't miss out.We will go back for lunch and also for their famous award winning breakfast!
