Been several times before and food has previously been reliable - and service good. Something must have been wrong because the food was pretty poor. Fish batter had the colour of Katie Prices fake tan and was mostly batter. Gammon was tiny and dry as a bone, burger was just that...burger and bun with little else (the added onion rings were limited to two straight from the freezer). At £14 - 16 a head, and given our previous visits, I would expect more..... particularly a sense of pride and care from the kitchen. Staff were running round but not really attentive. Disappointed.

We live in London but visit family who live in Retford once or twice a year and have eaten here maybe 8 times over the last five years. Our previous review headlined “nearly 5 stars”, but this time, two is the most we can muster. First, we phoned and booked a week in advance (in case in our chosen evening they had a large Xmas party). On arrival we were told they had no booking. It wasn’t full so we were found a table. Unfortunately, there were a number of items on the menu which were not available, including the choice of two of our party. It was 630 on a Monday evening. Our second choices were not a success, the haddock had far too much batter and not enough fish and the risotto was far too creamy. Service, except for the lady at reception (who called us darling all the time) was adequate at best. There is now only one real ale (a high volume % not good for the drivers). Previously, there was a good selection of at least three. We had not seen any of the serving staff before.

We went for Sunday lunch. It was a really good meal. The joints were not giant ones like in big chain pubs but this meant they were fresher not given time to dry out. The vegetables were the same regularly replenished so always fresh. Wide range of chive of meat and vegetables. The staff were really polite and efficient quick excellent service. Recommend to anyone!

After a day of decorating, cleaning and doing odd jobs around the house I couldn’t be bothered to cook a roast so we decided to try the sun inn! We hadn’t booked beforehand however the lovely gentleman on the door found us a table for two, it wasn’t the best situated table but he did tell us that but it was absolutely fine and we enjoyed a lovely carvery. Everything was cooked lovely and it was hot. My only complaint would be that I asked for a Diet Coke and was given a pint so maybe the bar staff could ask if wanting small or large but then I could of specified a small so no biggy really. Overall we enjoyed everything and will return

We came today for the Sunday Carvery. My Mum and I have been a couple of times previously for food midweek, and it was ok so we decided to take the family today. It was one of the worst Sunday lunches I have ever had. We are so disappointed with it and to be honest it was that rubbish we probably now won't return at all. The table was sticky when we sat down and we had to request for it to be wiped. We ordered the carvery, around 10 minutes later were told we could go up and when my elderly Dad who has mobility issues went up the carver asked him for his ticket. We hadn't been given any tickets so he was told he couldn't be served. He then had to return to the table, and we had to wait for the waitress to come back to get a ticket. The food was really bland, most of it was cold/cool, the vegetables were really undercooked. I personally love my veg with a little bite but this was rock hard. The gravy was like water. The roast potatoes were white and the mash was a weird colour and had a funny taste. My parents are convinced it was instant mash. We ordered 3 sides for £9. We had some pigs in blankets, most were a bit anemic looking and there was a lot of grease in the dish. We also had 2 portions of stuffing to share between all of us. To be honest it was tasteless and also anemic looking. My Mum did speak to the waitress when she went to pay but said she didn't really seem interested in her issues. Another waitress came to the table to clear away whilst we finished our drinks and asked if everything had been OK, my Mum explained we were not happy with the standard of food. She apologised and asked if we had spoken to the manager, which my Mum had not. She said OK, apologised again and left. Really, we should have been asked if we wanted to speak to him/her and of so, either pointed in the direction of him/her, or we should have been asked if we wanted the manager to be brought over. Also, the man on the carvery appeared as if he would rather be anywhere else but serving you. I was sorting 2 children out and making sure they could manage etc and he carved my meat and stood looking at me whilst he held it with the knife as if I was an idiot for not picking up a plate. It's the first time we had been, my fault, but there was a bit of an attitude going on that wasn't called for. I also heard him speaking to the lady behind me in the queue who was asking if there were more roast potatoes etc as there were hardly any left and he responded as if she were a nuisance, just a tone in his voice. My Dad also mentioned that when he went up for his carvery, he had not picked up a plate either, and the carver asked if he had a plate when he could clearly see he didn't. Not being funny, but he could just tell you to collect a plate. They are right at the side of the carvery trolley within arms reach of the carver. Probably would save him some time to pick the plate up himself rather than be clever about it. Will definitely not return for Sunday lunch. It's such a shame because we had been looking forward to it.

We have been a couple of times over the last couple of months, always hoping for better in terms of food cause the service and atmosphere is really friendly and they allow dogs. Every time we've been left disappointed. One occasion on a Tuesday we were told there was no lasagne, so we ordered pies to be told none of those either, when there's only 8 things on the main menu this limits choice somewhat (if you don't want a pizza or burger). Another time we had pizza which was fine but very expensive for what it is. Yesterday i think is the final nail in the coffin when we went for Sunday carvery. We were shown to our table and given menus then nothing else. Husband ended up at the bar getting drinks and asking if we were to also order food at the bar, theybsaid it was tvale service. Cauliflower & broccoli cheese and stuffing an extra charge (although they were really good and let us know when the cauli cheese was nearly ready so we could fetch our carverys). The meat we were given was lovely but there was no where near enough, I dread to think what a child portion is like. The choice of veg was slightly underwhelming, we had cauliflower and broccoli in the cheese dish we ordered so that left carrots and peas. Choice of mash and roast potatoes but the mash tasted weird, and roasties were from a bag. Yorkshire pudding was the best bit, that was spot on!! Overall, it felt like a school dinner and definitely not worth the money. Neither of us will be recommending or going back, there was nothing overly wrong with it all (which is why we didn't complain) but there wasn't much right with it either - distinctly average.

Sunday lunch Shown to our table and left; no drinks or instructions how the carvery operated. Asked about gluten free and vegetarian. Gluten free was everything apart from Yorkshire pudding which we was ok with that. Vegetarian was carvery without meat, no vegetarian meat alternative option but same price without meat. Stuffing cauliflower cheese were extra. Meat was cooked beautiful but there wasn’t much of it, broccoli & cauliflower was cold so we warmed it up with the gravy which was all gluten & vegetarian friendly, shame it was like water, but it did warm the cold meal up. Now came the bit we like the best……. The potatoes….mash tasted awful, was convinced it was smash, until I tasted the roasties that tasted exactly the same, like stale potatoes. We ate the meat and veg and as a family of 5 felt very disappointed with carvery but lesson learnt and we wouldnt return. On exiting we was asked if everything had been ok and we felt the need to be honest stating it was let down by the potatoes that were disgusting. They was not interested and said they had no other complaints which I found hard to believe, no offer of price reduction or apology. We paid and said we would have dessert outside. We had been sat for quite awhile when we noticed it had been awhile since we ordered & to our dismay our deserts had been placed at the other end of the seating area where no one was sitting and left to melt, again no apology or offer to refresh. We have had great service and food here in the past and thought maybe it was just a problem with the Sunday lunch. But to be treated in this was you will not gain popularity and custom I am afraid. On leaving we all said… never again that was rank.

We are not big eaters and to leave our meal still feeling hungry is really unacceptable. This restaurant was fantastic when it first opened a few years ago, but we feel the quality and quantity of the food has deteriorated significantly. This is a terrible shame as Retford doesn’t have a vast amount to offer for dining as it is, and this is now one less place we will choose to visit. We will not be dining here again.

The actually venue itself is really nice - but that’s about where it ends. Use to be really good food so you didn’t mind paying the prices. The same cannot be said now unfortunately very expensive for very average ‘pub’ food - shame.

My Wife and I are regular customers of this fantastic establishment, it’s that good, we travel 17miles round trip just to eat there, it’s always, clean, comfortable, the staff are friendly, efficient and nothing is too much trouble, a special mention for Ruby, no matter how busy she is or how unwell she feels she always greets you with a smile and asks how you are, professional and a credit to her employer, thank you all for always being the best in Retford 😉

Not a bad atmosphere as you walk through the door, although it took a few minutes for them to realise I was there, luckily the TV was on current affairs. Some tables still had dirty plates on them. Ordered a large sandwich and was asked if I wanted extras on, (egg was mentioned but I didn't get any). The sandwich was well worth the money (£4.60) as it was really full. Negatives were: bread was soggy but this was due to everything inside, eg coleslaw, salad cream etc. This also meant the sandwich fell to bits so I had to eat it with fork. They used clingfilm instead of foil/paper to wrap, this added to the mess when it was unwrapped. Big one for me was the lady DID NOT use gloves, I mentioned this and she said that she had just washed her hands, the clothes she was wearing were really dirty which did not fill me with joy. Overall the sandwich filled me up, the staff was kind and helpful but I won't return as I prefer cleanliness above all else.

This pub is a tale of two halves. The decoration & ambiance of the pub is lovely, loos are clean and ample parking. The pub was wonderfully dog friendly & the lady behind the bar & taking food orders was wonderful, friendly and vey helpful, the drinks were great and amazingly cheap.....However..... I'm afraid the whole evening was ruined by the food. I ordered the Fillet steak, medium rare @ £25.00 (not expensive), I asked for side salad instead of onion rings, mushrooms & toms. No sauce. What arrived was a very small sirloin (poss rump) steak, 1/2 " thick with a good 1" of unrendered fat down one side and over cooked. Plus a side of pepper sauce I never ordered. I questioned if the order had been taken down wrong or misread but I was assured that the Chef says The steak is definitely fillet! & the sauce is complimentary!..... I am not a butcher but I do know what a Fillet cut looks like !!! This was NOT. I was on a date with my partner so didn't want to complain, or embarrass him, but I feel bad that I allowed him to pay for something I definitely didn't have! I ate the meal which was edible but not what it was meant to be. The couple on the table behind us had a lengthily argument with the chef about his steak, sent one back & refused to pay for the second!! I don't mind if things aren't available or the kitchen is short staffed. I don't care of orders are taken or read wrongly BUT to be LIED to is unforgiveable. If I was there on my own I would not have accepted my meal. That said, my boyfriend's Faggots were lovely.......In short, A lovely pub for a cheap drink.......just don't have high expectations of the food.
