Staff provided me with takeaway cups when they asked if i was sitting in and said yes and didn’t put the correct sauce inside of my cup due to this, selfish people sat in the comfiest seats with NO DRINK!!! 🤯 Staff are just incompetent and prices as always are extortionate. Not worth the prices as they do not provide you what is said on the menu

Served by Karen, well what can I say, ordered toast and butter and was given 3 small little butters, now on a normal piece of toast this would be sufficient but on their large slices, you really need 2 butters, so I went to ask for a couple more, not the entire box just 2, and was rudely spoken to by Karen again who demanded I pay 10p for an extra butter, now when I said I have never had this problem in any of the other costa's I have visited up and down the country and I was told "they should be charging you" turned round and carried on nattering some kind of nonsense about me to someone else behind the counter. I was left there feeling rather stupid. I was in Gloucester the day before, London and Cornwall in the previous days all who offered extra butter without non of this I am the manager and what I say goes! Will not go in their again, just over principle and Karen's rudeness.

There tends to be very little to consider with reviews of coffee chain cafes, so all I can really say about Costa Coffee in Retford is that it is a good example of the genre. Clean, tidy, centrally located, decent coffees and friendly, efficient service.

Since reopening after lockdown Costa seems to have got better. The place is cleaner and staff greeting you are really friendly. They do seem slower at preparing drinks and the queues can be quite long but this seems to be down to them adhering to social distancing. The only downside is you don’t get your receipt anymore... been 4 times and had to ask for it each time and only been able to provide it once?! Keep up this cleanliness standard and we’ll be returning.

Nice coffee and area, have been coming here for years since it was built. Always been good, quite annoying have to use a code for the toilet. Could maybe do with a porch as the restaurant gets quite chilly whenever the door opens even at the back. Staff were perfectly helpful, friendly and super quick.

DON’T LOSE YOUR COSTA RECEIPT IF YOU NEED TO USE THEIR RETFORD TOILET In common with many more rural market towns, quaint little Retford in North Notts has had its fair share of shop closures, due to online purchasing. This has led to a burgeoning of coffee and charity shops. Fortunately, there are still some independent retailers left but few are open on Sunday morning. However , the choice of coffee shops is not great on a Sunday. I went into the town with some relatives for a coffee on a bright October morning and found only two places available This is a shame as many visitors pass through looking at the town’s historic features. There were plenty of people walking through the cobbled square. Where to get a coffee? The first place was Spencers across the Market Square and the second was Costa Coffea, which is in the pedestrianised centre, Carol gate. It opens at 8:30 AM and closes at 5 PM I had not been in this café before, because I prefer the more authentic and independent Italian café, with home-made food and excellent coffee on the opposite corner. Unfortunately, it is not open on Sunday. Costa coffee is, of course, a leading brand and says everywhere that it is “the nations favourite”. We all went in and it was warm inside on a chilly day. That was a good thing. The first thing I saw was it was extremely busy. There were even mothers there with pushchairs having a bit more difficult time than others, because of the way it is designed, not giving them enough space to get in and out We found some of the round pine tables- which are of good quality and I looked around. Virtually the whole of the coffee coloured wall decoration was confined to pictures of coffee cups and slogans aimed at convincing you that you had come into the right place and made the right decision to have a cup of coffee there. The chairs were extremely comfortable. No one was hurried and a feature was the provision of a number of different Sunday newspapers for Customers to read. There were plenty of helpers cleaning tables in a most efficient way. They had to go into little dividing bays where people sat in fours, some behind small iron railings. Up.above were small spotlights. I could not see anywhere for children to sit. It was obviously intended for mainly young adults to come in and meet and check their mobile phones. The general ambience was welcoming and the staff t pleasant The counter, as one came in, showed a range of very luscious cakes but I was disappointed at seeing so many plastic bottles for other drinks.. I was also told that Costa Coffee had no plans to replace the plastic strawss which they were using. These are so damaging for the environment. Whether that was official policy or not I do not know. All of the white china was chunky and good to handle. I noticed that on the top of my wife’s coffee a design had been created with the cream. However, I found my coffee was too insipid. It did not have enough bite for my taste. From where I sat there were large coloured glass vases through which the light from the windows shone While the toilets were extremely well-kept clean and well-equipped, I found the method of protecting them most unwelcoming. I’m used to French restaurants giving no trouble in allowing a non-customer to fulfil a natural need and go to the toilet, but Costa coffee wants to restrict every toilet use to customers who have paid. To enter a toilet you have to look at your receipt and find a code number which is then tapped into the lock on the door to the toilet area. My son suggested that this may be to prevent drug users from going in. Of course it probably keeps them cleaner, but I’ve never seen drug users around that area at all- Hopefully, some of the more newer and independent coffee shops, which have facilities for children will give more competition to this chain which has come to dominate the market worldwide. I found it overpriced and over-hyped. That's me! Each person to their coffee cup.

One of the nicest costas I have visited. Had a good range of sandwiches and service was relatively quick with a smile. Offered to bring my hot sandwich over to me and no sign of any pets unlike other places I have been in Retford. I suggest if you have pets and want to take them into food establishments that you nip down to a cafe with outdoor seating!

Went today with my fiancé and chihuahua dog which happily gets into her bag. Was served coffee and we sat in the corner. An older member of staff was cleaning up and quickly went to the counter to tell other members of staff that we had a dog in a bag. Why she didn’t confront us herself I don’t know! Now where I’m from, it’s normal to take dogs into cafes especially chihuahuas as they’re small and like I said mine has her own bag which she loves to be in. Before I entered the shop I did check in the door and there was nothing on there to prohibit dogs which is why we went in. A female employee came over and shouted “do you have a dog in your bag?” She was so loud everyone looked at us in the shop, it wasn’t full but there were many people in. Before I had chance to reply she shouted it again. We explained it was normal where we came from and she said again, “your not allowed in with dogs it says so on the door. I appreciate that dogs are not always allowed, but I did look on the door before entering, and I did not see anything to say dogs were prohibited. Maybe I missed it, then it was my mistake. But it was the employees attitude that got me, shouting so the whole of Costa looked, my fiancé is pretty quiet but even he said about her shouting! I’m only visiting and probably won’t come back again, but if I ever did I would serious avoid this costa shop! Instead of being nice and explaining that dogs were not allowed, we were shouted at. On existing the shop, I did look on the door and there was nothing on there about dogs. If there was I didn’t see anything!

. . bla bla bla" me vuelve loca! El ambiente es ruidoso - Máquinas de café Barista silbido y gritando por todo el tiempo que estuve allí. He usado el retrete - maloliente y no muy agradable. En general, es mejor evitarlo.

We always call in here on our Sunday visits and the staff are always very pleasant. I usually have a cortado as I don't like froth and lots of milk, however this time my little cup of coffee was a quarter froth so very little coffee, I should have taken it back but the queue was bigger so I didn't bother but I do wish the people making coffee would just take a little more care and understand when and when not to froth the milk!

A day out and about, shopping, market day, and a catch up. We popped in here around 12 noon for a coffee. We ordered 1 X cappuchino, 1 X latte, 1 X chocolate and 1 lemon tart. It wasn't overly busy but it took around 10minutes too get the drinks sorted, it seemed chaotic and stressful for the staff. As costa is a chain brand one can always expect to enjoy a nice cup of coffee with a slice of cake or a toastie. The staff are always friendly, however, they often look a little understaffed and as a result seem to be slightly stressed when serving customers. The food is always nice as is the coffee (which i personally prefer to the starbucks coffee.) The atmosphere is relaxing too! Will be coming back again

Support independent coffee shops in Retford, they are far more worthy of spending a tenner on than a big corporation like Costa. If we all spent a fiver a week in local businesses we'd put an extra 3 million into the local economy. If you want to see your town thrive, then back the local coffee shops. Not Costa. Do we pride ourselves on local character, or do we just want to be the same as every other town centre?

I think it's very expensive, the coffee cups are too large, even the normal size is like soup bowl. The staff friendly and helpful. Selection of cakes good but again overpriced. One drawback, at busy times if you are lucky enough to find an seating area the table top is full of dirty dishes due to waitresses serving at the till area. Nice place to be seen and chat. But prefer the 10 Green Bottles in the market, but also fast catching up with prices.

This was a Monday lunchtime meal for 6 friends, and due to a cancelled walk beforehand because of the heavy rain, we arrived very early, but as our reserved table was available we were promptly seated. Excellent start, and having been given menus, ordered drinks and placed meal orders everything was fine. Starters arrived, a couple of Garlic Mushrooms with Rustic bread looked fine. My Japanese Karaage dish ( chicken pieces in spicy batter with harissa) wasn’t great, the batter whilst crispy on the outside, was soggy inside and the chicken pieces inside were very small, not breast meat but looked like thigh. The harissa was actually a harissa inspired mayo dip, very spicy but nice for it. For main course, three of us had Sea Bass fillets with crushed garlic potatoes with a wine and cheese sauce with green beans and carrots. Very nicely presented, however I’ve never had a plated meal which was so hot ( except for oven baked lasagne, fish pie etc) in particular the potatoes which were sliced and not crushed. At a guess, the plated meals had been waiting under the heated lamps on the pass for some time whilst other meals were ready. The sea bass was rather dry because of this, but copious amounts of white wine and cheese sauce provided in a gravy boat moistened the fish nicely. However, I’d much rather have a very hot meal rather than tepid or verging on cold as I experienced on more than one occasion. Our friends had a chicken and mushroom pie (thick soggy crust), a lamb and mint pie, and a plain butterflied chicken breast, all with accompanying vegetables, everything well presented. After this we waited and waited and waited, then had to shout to the bar for dessert menus half an hour after finishing main courses. Desserts weren’t great, 3 of us had a gluten free NY baked cheesecake which was very grainy and not pleasant, the mixed berries were not defrosted properly and the ice cream was bland. Others had apple and blackberry crumble and no one managed more than half of their dish, which comprised roughly 70% crumble and 30% fruit. Unfortunately not many complements were forthcoming. Again after finishing desserts we had to shout to the bar for attention for hot drinks to finish with. Coffee was nice, but the tea drinkers weren’t impressed, there was ‘just tea’ available, no varieties, and what arrived was very weak. The cardinal sin, apart from having no Sticky Toffee pudding available was that there was no interest in clearing our dessert dishes away, and these were left in front of us until we vacated the table to pay at the bar. At this time the pub wasn’t busy and staff were more interested in chatting to themselves rather than dealing with diners. Not once throughout our meal were we asked if everything was alright with our good. Maybe they were embarrassed by the about of food left uneaten on everyone’s plates. From their website and meal descriptions it looks like The Chequers is positioning itself as a Gastro pub, but it’s nowhere near to what I’d expect. It’s difficult to pin down an identity for their cuisine, having American, Chinese, Thai, German, English, Mexican, Mediterranean, Japanese, Moroccan and Italian dishes on the menu, but my suspicion is that many of the meals are bought in meals preprepared for catering. I may be wrong here, but that’s how it looks. Overall we thought it was a less than average experience which wouldn’t be difficult to improve with a bit of attention to detail, quality over quantity and better consideration from the serving staff. Oh, and the wi-if was not working 🤷🏻♂️

I hired out there function room July 2024, price was reasonable for what you got, I was able to provide my own food/DJ. As for the so called “staff” half of them did not even work there they were “helping out a friend” so no bar experience at all. Had to ask them to go and buy basic fruit for drinks from Asda as there was none at all. Had to explain what drinks we wanted and what was in them. They were charging us wrong every time we bought a drink, £22 for two Hugo Sprits then £16 for one. When we asked about this they had no explanation. There seemed to be no one in charge of the function, just looked like had no clue what they were doing. The bartender Emily was the one who helped the most (as she was the only one who worked there). Would not recommend to have a function here if you want it run by people who do not know what they are doing.

My wife, 2 children and visiting relatives went to your cafe today. And I was absolutely astounded by the poor service and lack of communication. We arrived at around 10:20 and was seated outside, we had our drinks order taken and breakfast order, but was told the kitchen was quite busy so to expect a slight wait… What we was not told was that the slight wait would turn into not getting our food until gone 11:40. When I got up to ask the young man who was serving how long the breakfast would be, he replied saying they stop serving breakfast at 11:30 not realising we had ordered already he said it shouldn’t be much longer (no apology given for the wait). And even then some of the food was cold, and the bacon my wife had was inedible. Will definitely not be returning
