We had a takeaway pastis de nata and we tried a Pastel Tentugal. Oh my goodness, these where the best pastries we have eaten the filo was so delicate. We will definitely visit again when back in Barnstable.

We’ve been twice since the polo season has finished and both times the food has been phenomenal. Ashlee is an awesome hostess. It’s dog friendly too, which add to the relaxed atmosphere. Definitely recommend if it’s a sunny day, you can spend may hours enjoying some really delicious wine

We had an outstanding meal from Ryan while on holiday with our 11 month old. Delicious restaurant quality food with none of the stress of chasing our toddler around a busy dining room full of other patrons! The food was excellent as was the service and he left the kitchen spotless. We would highly recommend for a luxurious but relaxed experience.

We stayed on an extra day in Bideford to be able to come to this restaurant to have a special meal to celebrate a birthday. The whole experience was simply perfect. Lydia is so welcoming and friendly in creating a happy and relaxing atmosphere. Florian’s skill in the kitchen is of the highest order with every element beautifully prepared using only the very best local ingredients. Scallops made an exquisitely delicate starter. My wife had the salted cod dish and loved it. Having grown up by the sea, I spent a happy hour attacking half of a very large and wonderfully fresh crab with home-made mayonnaise and sour-dough bread. We even shared 3 puddings between us so that we could each have the delicious crême brûlée without missing out on the home-made pistachio and almond ice cream. Really good choice of wines - we had the Crémant de Bourgogne which was the perfect complement to the food and only recently added to their wine list. We both agree that this really was one of the best meals we have had anywhere in the world. Thank you Lydia and Florian.

Jim Cairney I salute you ! What a fantastic ,relaxed , fun , eating experience. The food speaks for itself , absolutely excellent, delivered in an easy unpretentious manner. Jim, the chef /owner is full of anecdotes & quickly builds a wonderful rapport with his diners , ensuring that all have a fun time. He effortlessly switches from creating divine dishes in his kitchen, to entertaining front of house ….. a master indeed. Don't watch the clock , don’t expect airs & graces , do relax & enjoy his unique eating environment , then you will be assured a great dining experience.

Nice ambience and decor in the restaurant, my chair was unfortunately a bit sticky on the edge which i felt when pulling chair forward (probably from the previous customer). I wanted to get the waitresses attention but they all seemed busy. Not a problem, I wiped the residue away with a wet wipe. The food which we had was beautifully presented and tasty. I loved the Scallop risotto.. So delicious. Unfortunately my son’s filet steak was well done rather than medium rare which he asked for. He didn't want to make a fuss and said it was fine so he kept it. He said it was still a good piece of meat. There were 2 different lemonaid sold out which i wanted, but the one I had was nice (lime). Despite the experience not being 100%, the quality of the food is what we were there for and we enjoyed it.

Tiny and tucked down some steep stairs in a basement location, but perfect French food, perfect service and a friendly welcome. See how many French film stars you can name on the walls as you enjoy the unpretentious but delicious classic French cuisine. Update 2025: the bistro seems to have changed hands - prices up and quality not quite as good. Good but not excellent any longer.

The restaurant is housed in a 400 year old house with beams and inglenooks. We had a very fine dinner comprising crab cocktail, lamb, brisket, pannacotta and rhubarb. Everything was local , properly cooked and well presented. Friendly service. It is quite expensive but for a special occasion it does not disappoint.

Visited on a wednesday evening with husband and two kids. The service was delightful and the food was out of this world! I had salt and pepper squid to start, it was the best I’ve ever had in any country. We also had a scallops started and a smoked mackerel pate starter that were equally delicious. The kids loved the garlic prawns wrapped in a fillet of plaice. Monkfish in a peppercorn sauce was a revelation and the thai red seafood curry was heavenly (just the right side of a chilli kick). Desserts were good too! Highly recommend this charming little place.

Oh I just love this place! We went last night for a Bastille dinner. The food was spectacular, I had a vegetarian Wellington which was absolutely delicious, except it was enormous, covered nearly two thirds of the plate and I felt guilty leaving some. My husband had a steak which was perfectly cooked. This place has a fantastic atmosphere. Small but perfectly formed and buzzing with happy conversation. Thank you Anita Claire for another great meal and evening.
