The Scallop Shell

Kingsmead, Bath and North East Somerset
14/11/2023: Best fish and chips ever! The food was freshly made in front of us and was screaming hot. Fab. The tarter sauce and mushy peas also fresh. Lovely.
08/11/2023: Deciding that we needed at least one great fish and chips meal while we were in England, we'd read about this place and, after discovering that it was just a few blocks from where we were staying, we made a reservation and arrived there on a somewhat-rainy evening hungry and eager to see if they'd live up to their reputation. Well, friends, they certainly did! We were quickly seated after our arrival (the decor is modern/warehousy, with nice woods and a lot of plumbers pipes!) and, after choosing a couple of nice glasses of wine to start, we dove in to the menu, choosing to start by sharing an order of local mussels (in a white wine/shallot broth) and then trying a couple of the mains they've earned their reputation with - the cod loin fish and chips (with a side of mushy peas) and the smoked salmon fish cake, also with chips and mushy peas. This way, we'd get a sense of the place and their attention to detail. The mussels arrived soon afterwards, and these had to be in the top 2 of any we've ever had (and we've tried them EVERYWHERE) - nicely-sized, all fresh and with a broth that we were forced to finish off with our spoons. We are so jealous of the quality of the seafood here. After we'd finished our starters, the plates with our main courses arrived and, for the next 30 minutes, we simply "oohed" and "aahed" the quality and flavors of what we'd been served. Even the potatoes were a hit - not too fried and with wonderful mashed-inside consistency. Our only complaint was that the quantity of chips we were given was WAAY too much for two people to eat at one sitting, so we were forced to take them home with us to enjoy again the next day as a side to another meal. Also, kudos to the mushy peas, which were a hundred times tastier than those you typically find at chippies (and in the can). While not inexpensive (the entire meal, with drinks and tip, came in at about 80 GBP), this was fish and chips taken to another level and by which all others will be measured going forward. We need a place like this here...

Blenheim Park, Southend-on-Sea
25/09/2020: This evening Friday 25th @ 7.15pm. Happily prepared to wait 10 mins for my order of large rock and medium chips.....a further 10min walk home to tuck in to my eagerly awaited meal. The chips looked good, tasted good! The fish looked ok on the outside BUT beneath the batter, a rock eel of no must of weighed next to nothing before being put into the fryer....absolute rubbish, .....the person who put this into the fryer must of known there was some mug out there....ME......I can honestly say this is the first time I've written about a bad food experience, not that it's my first bad experience, just never be bothered .....Just don't go back.
29/08/2020: Food ordered for 7pm but arrived at 6:10pm when I was not home. Wife tried to keep it warm but by the time I arrived home at 6:40 fish had gone hard and dry. Mostly inedible and had to be thrown away. Fish was also of very poor quality. Will never use again

08/08/2020: This takeaway is great. The food is always excellent. A small menu done well as restaurants should be. Very friendly and fast service.

Chippy Doon The Lane

Anderston / City, Glasgow City, >100£
09/11/2020: I love this place. Took my Danish relatives for lunch one day. They were delighted with what they called Scottish Fayre in comfortable and lovely surroundings and they would never have found it themselves! The most important thing was they thoroughly enjoyed it.
01/08/2020: One of the best fish and chips I've never tried. Nice place and people too

The Sea Shell Of Lisson Grove

Church Street, City of London,Westminster, 30-45£
20/11/2023: Stopped off for an early dinner around 6:30pm. Ordered sausage and chips and mushy peas. Sausage old and flabby, chips tasteless, mushy peas OK. Shambolic service, three staff just hanging about aimlessly, had to wait a good while for the food after paying even though only a few customers and the chips and sausage were ready, just nobody arsed to serve it! Shocking how bad this place has become as it used to be the best. Better off to go to The Golden Hind in Marylebone Lane which is far superior.
12/11/2023: Sadly, after many years of visiting this establishment, our visit on 11th November 2023 was shocking. This was our first visit since the Coronavirus Pandemic, we arrived at 9.41pm after travelling a long distance for what has always been a monthly treat (pre Pandemic). The people serving were not at all pleased to see us, we placed our order including a fishcake on it's own (I have a receipt to prove it) the lady who took our order was asked to confirm our order by the chef, he shout angrily and aggressively at her "No Fishcake" . She then came to us and said, "sorry no fishcakes but you can have anything else", we reluctantly ordered a portion of Calamari. The woman who appeared to be in charge was hostile and rude to the lady that was serving us and demanded that she go down stairs to get Tartare sauce. She was not at all pleasant to us neither, it was very clear they wanted to close up, all be it there was a good 15 mins before closing at 10pm. Unfortunately, to add to this hostile reception, the food was awful, the fish and calamari was tasteless despite being freshly fried for us, the mushy peas and tartare sauce were equally as tasteless, the chips, although freshly fried were a little undercooked. All in all our £40.50 meal we travelled miles across London to enjoy after several years of not being here was truly disappointing. As a resident of Maida Vale in the 80's and 90's, we have been patrons of Seashell since the days when Princess Diana and her children frequented this establishment. I'm without a doubt this establishment is no longer run by the previous owners, as the level of service and the quality of food is no comparison. Needless to say I will no be recommending Seashell or visiting again.

Mary Jane's Fish Bar

Cromer Town, North Norfolk, <20£
18/05/2021: Chips ok, but fish undercooked and greasy. I normally enjoy fish and chips but was disappointing. Won’t be returning
14/05/2021: My husband and I called in there yesterday, the set up where you pay at one table and collect at the other while waiting outside, works very well. The food was delicious and very hot and fresh When we got onto the front we were surprised to find 3 boxes and found they had added an extra fish in its own box as the other two while plenty big enough in my eyes were maybe a bit smaller than usual. What a lovely touch..10/10 on value service and quality..

Burgess Hill Meeds, Mid Sussex
10/02/2023: Has changed hands several times in recent years. At one stage run by a London publican who knew nothing about fish and chips. This is predominately a take-away. Best in Burgess Hill or surrounding villages. Friendly efficient staff. Ignore historic reviews as now back in the hands of experts. New menu Jan 2023. Both cod and haddock nice and thick with crispy batter. Chips hand cut from fresh potatoes. All cooked to order. Busy Fri & Sat pm. Usual range of sundries. Spring rolls good size. Children's menu available. Now open Mondays. Delivery through Deliveroo. Now called Station Fish Bar. Situated on Keymer Parade. 2min walk uphill from Burgess Hill Station. Highly recommended.
16/08/2022: not as nice as used to be since prices have gone up I think quality has gone down Cod is almost all batter and quite greasy chips are hard

Hungry Highlander

Aboyne, Upper Deeside and Donside, Aberdeenshire, <20£
03/06/2021: Lovely fish, chips, peas and curry sauce. Not greasy or soggy, nice and crisp. Friendly service too. Not a hungry highlander when we'd finished!!
02/06/2021: Seems to cater mostly for the abundance of motor bikes that like to cruise on the open roads in this area, food was pretty average for what it was and relatively pricy for the quality on offer.

Thornton Dale Fisheries

Thornton Dale, Ryedale
31/10/2021: Arrived to purchase food. Girl took the order, could t really be bothered. Told "wait outside" no please or politeness. Chips were scrap ends dispute girl asking the guy if there were enough chips. His response to her was rude.."yes that's why I didn't put Any more in. I gave him a surprised look at his attitude, he just stared through me. Very rude and poor service and product. No thanks never again. Thornton le Dale you need a new chippy.
10/10/2021: Me and my partner had cod and chips from here on Saturday night, they were the best fish and chips we have had for a long time, all orders are cooked to order but well worth the wait

Marino's Fish Bar in Kennigton

Little Burton Farm, Ashford
12/08/2023: Ordered a delivery of 2 gyros boxes. Chicken, chips, zatziki and salad. Well it was OK, no salad though, even though it states online. Phoned them and was told it doesn't come with salad anymore 🤣 £24 for a bit of chicken and chips fantastic!! The zatIki was lush though!!
20/11/2022: I was looking for a new chippie after moving to Ashford and I tried a few, one day at work driving through Kennington I noticed another Marino's, so I had large cod and chips, it was great, only downside was I couldn't eat it all. Following Thursday had sausages and chips which were freshly cooked to order, (as is the fish) but decided that the cod was for me. I try to go in after work on a Thursday but I now have standard cod and chips as I find it's just perfect for me. So glad I stopped originally and I'm glad that it's all freshly cooked to order.
