My friend and I visited Braemar on Saturday, it was a extremely hot day so we went for a ice cream ( may I add that the lady in the ice cream shop was polite and courteous and the ice cream was pretty good too) on leaving we looked for somewhere to sit. As the hungry highlander had tables outside we walked across but as they were for their customers we decided to move to the back and stand under the tree to be in the shade as we are more mature ladies. We had be there a few seconds when this “angry highlander “ came towards us shouting. To say we were shocked was a understatement. He then muttered something about ice cream and stormed off. Never in my life have I been shouted at for eating a tub of ice cream under a tree !! It definitely put Braemar in a bad light when the more mature ladies are shouted at in that manner. On principle no matter how good their food may be I would not give this establishment my business.

What a horrible experience. We thought it was closed as it was so empty. Bikes have always pulled up and parked there before eating. Today as we pulled up we got glared at. Upon entering we got told can’t you park anywhere else. It appears he hates bikes and has tables pulled all the way accross the car park, because he doesn’t want them. So we left not having eaten. There is a reason it was dead and empty. His attitude!

They stated online that they would be opening until half 7 in the evening. Me and my Dad got there at half 6 and were shut. Not particularly happy with that knowing they were open only on that day and shut for the other 6 days. Possibly to do with price inflation. However shutting early was to my dissatisfaction as I was looking forward to a tasty haggis as the Braemar Coop doesn't even sell Haggis.

The filled roll was ok, nothing to write home about but edible. What really let the Hungry Highlander down and for me to score 1 star, was the guy serving stinking attitude and awful customer service. Fantastic haddock and chips served quickly considering it was cooked to order. Very covid safe environment, order in shop then wait outside. £8.50 seemed very reasonable as there were far too many chips to eat, and the fish was delicious inside crispy batter. Can’t understand the bad reviews.

If you want barked at and a long wait for your food don’t hesitate come here. Okay, we did come on a Saturday at 6 pm but a 45 minute wait for a small order is ridiculous, okay there was a few people before us but this should have been managed better. And as for the small man behind the counter, a course on customer service wouldn’t go a miss. Thanks.

I have been coming to the highlander for a few years now as it's a great run for the bike, on our last visit we were told that the bikes couldn't be parked in between the benches as we normal would, due to COVID-19 we haven't been out much so didn't realise that they have now become anti-bike. I was not going to write a review but after my husband visiting and being forced to move his bike yet again and the man who looked to be the owner telling him it was never a bikers cafe I'm seriously disappointed. It's always been a good bikers stop and we'll known in the community but clearly new owner don't want our trade anymore. Gutted to see a business that used to be full of bike on a good day not welcoming at all.

Recently visited Braemar with our family for the last week of August. We nipped down to The Hungry Highlander on our first night as we arrived later than expected and just wanted to grab something quick for tea. Was a bit sceptical as some of the reviews we’d seen weren’t that positive, especially regarding the customer service. We are so glad that we decided to see for ourselves! The food was beautiful, especially the fish. The portion were massive and whilst they weren’t chip shop chips as we know them, they were still really lovely. We actually bought chips on another occasion too. My husband also tried the haggis and said it was lovely. The food was super fresh and cooked to order, something that doesn’t happen everywhere! The customer service was amazing and they couldn’t have been any nicer. They were really friendly and the service was really quick. My advice would be to make your own mind up and not to take the word of the people who have left negative reviews, because if we’d of done that we probably wouldn’t have visited. We’ve booked to visit at Christmas and most definitely will return! Thank you! Overall experience 5*. It was super busy all the time so they’re clearly doing something right!

I really don’t exaggerate, but in all my years this is the worst chipper supper we’ve ever had.I had a fish supper, batter was tasteless, well over cooked and the fat, I can on,y assume, was needing changed as it was awful. My wife had a haggis supper, cooked until an inch of being burnt to nothing. We didn’t notice how bad it looked when served due to where the counter is. If we noticed there and then we would have refused it. It was until we got back to the accommodation where we noticed it.We’ve been here before several times and it has been pretty good, overall. What does surprise me is that in such a condition and the quality is not on their list of priorities.Honestly, we will definitely not be going back.

Coming from an area of the UK where the art of decent FishNChips has long since gone, I admit I tend to adjust my travel itinerary to ensure I transit Braemar when the Hungry Highlander is open. Gals that cook and serve are friendly and happy folk. Place is clean and caters to all sorts. No plush seating inside, picnic tables outside. I'm ordering fish and chips next time because the oooooh and aaaaahs of a couple eating it next to us was making me super hungry, fish looked fabulous and crispy as did the chips. Can't fault this chipper for a warming, quick bite. If you have the time in good weather this is a good place to munch outside and people watch, seen some real characters travelling through!

This is one of those areas where I think TA could do better. The Hungry Highlander rates as 6 out of 8 of places to eat in Braemar, which is somewhat unfair. Its a chippy no more, no less. It doesn’t pretend to be a restaurant or have pretensions above its station it is just a good local chip shop. I think rating it amongst the other restaurants within the village is a bit unfair and fast food, takeaway venues should be categorised separately from sit down restaurants in the overall rankings.

The Hungry Highlander's parking lot was full of motorcycles the entire time we were there. Service at the counter was friendly and I was pleased to see that they had a 'veggie burger' on the menu. My husband had a BIG slab of fish fillet and chips. My veggie burger was not what I espected--it was literally a burger made of veggies--chunks of carrot, peas and corn were visible, and it was fried up with a crispish crust. Thinking about it made me a bit queasy, but that taste was...OK. The onion rings were fine and the fish and chips were too. Mostly outdoor seating on picnic tables among the bikers.

Very disappointing and quite frankly rude behaviour!! We instead phoned the chip shop in Ballater (only a short drive away) who were delighted to serve us and the food was beautiful!! I would highly recommend visiting Ballater for your chip supper and giving Braemar chip shop a wide berth! Wir wollten mal nicht immer Restaurant essen und haben dies probiert. Fish and Cips. Sehr gute Qualität und lecker. Unbedingt den Finisher mit bestellen. Das Wetter hatte mit gespielt und so konnten wir draußen essen.

The food from this takeaway is good value for a small town in Braemar. We had Deep Fried Haggie and Venison Burgers with chips. We just let the kids try Scottish food. There were plenty of benches in front of the shop to sit around for eating.

Amazing pub! Brilliant location, where Peaky Blinders and the remake if Whisky Galore was filmed. Lovely friendly staff, great atmosphere and the locals were so welcoming. Served a great pint of Belhaven Best too!

Stayed here for just 1 night while exploring Balmoral and the local area. Room was lovely with a stunning view over the Loch. Even had time to try the golf which was a nice little course. Found the owners to be nice and friendly. Would stay here again.

Right next to where we stayed this little cafe was calling out for us to get coffee and cake. The cake offering was very good with lots of choice and the same with the drinks. Both were delicious - however, the service was so slow due to there being one member of staff trying to manage everything with a queue forming outside and orders coming in on an app. There needs to be more people helping.
