Very disappointed Sausage and chips 5.00 and chips were awful sausage tiny Only good thing seagulls had a feast won't be going back

Have been to Mary Jane's many times and always been very happy with the food. Went this week and ordered my usual Gluten Free cod & chips. This time I wasn't impressed at all. The batter on the fish was almost non existant. That caused the top of the fish to be hard and dried out and the rest of it just very dry. The chips were only ok, nowhere near as nice as usual. In hind sight I should have sent it back. Don't think I will be going there again

On our way home from Felbrigg Hall, we popped down the road to Mary Janes for fish and chips, it was recommended by the friends we were with and it did not disappoint, the first and chips were very nice and very reasonably priced the staff were very nice and very efficient, if you are ever in Cromer I would recommend a visit.

So looking forward to fish and chips. Ordered Rock and husband ordered Plaice. My Rock was dark brown. When I cut it the inside of the batter was not cooked. The flesh of the meat was not tasty. Obviously the fish had been frozen. Husband said Plaice ok but not good and the batter was hard. The mushy peas were a solid lump. Will not be going back.

Excellent food, generous, fresh and delicious. Place was clean and welcoming. Would definitely go again and recommend to others

Another hidden gem of Fish and chips. We sat on the bench looking over the pier in the evening and it was magical. I think great fish and chips should always be eaten by the sea and early evening.

Had fish cake and chips with curry sauce. All was great with no complaints. We were serviced swiftly and the food soon followed. Will be back when in the area.

Ordered haddock and chips twice and 2 teas. Staff were really helpful and friendly, however when the food arrived it was only just warm, as though it had been left waiting for quite a while, soggy and the fish inside was hard dry and chewy making it inedible.. I complained to the waitress who was happy to change this and came back to us saying that they had just put two fresh pieces of haddock in and it would take 5-10 mins. We were happy with this and waited for the replacement. When the waitress returned, the fish and chips had obviously just come out of the fryer as it was hot, however on trying to cut into it again it was very dry and as bad as the first serving. I again complained to the waitress and said that we would not be staying for another attempt. Paid for the teas and left having tried just one fork of fish and a chip. NOT good food but service wise couldn’t fault them.

Very good fish and chips at a reasonable price. If you want fish and chips in Cromer then you won't be disappointed with this place.

Was delighted there was np queue, I soon found out why , chips looked like they could of been cooked alot more , were very pale , were greasey and no flavour , cooking longer in a cleaner oil would of been much better , couldn't believe how expensive they were for standard fishcake and chips nearly £6, no wonder it was empty , other well know chipped was doing excellent business, won't be ever going back

We visited cromer today and decided to try this fish shop as it had been recommended. We sat in the restaurant and was very disappointed we both had haddock chips and peas , and a cup of tea . Not much flavour and very expensive. £40 this cost and will not recommend or visit again ,

We were looking for somewhere to eat and were recommended Mary Janes. I was looking forward to sitting inside but as dogs were not allowed we decided to get a takeaway. After queuing a while I eventually reached the zombies at the counter. No greeting just a look. I asked for two sausage and chips,one with peas and one with curry,also two cups of tea. They were quickly supplied, £17 paid and they were put on the counter. As I am eighty four years old I am past juggling so I asked could I please have a bag. A bag was just put on the counter which was raised, not an easy task to load the bag. No help was forthcoming.I eventually managed the two trays,peas and curry but struggled with the teas. I burnt my hand trying to get one tea in the bag but managed it.The other tea I carried with a paper bag round it as it was so hot. Was it all worthwhile? No!!! The sausage which cost £2 was only small, three inches long.It wasn’t very nice. The chips appeared to be the dregs of the chip fryer, not crisp and bits of other stuff in with them. The curry was OK as were the mushy peas even if only in small quantities.The cups of tea were lovely. Would I go again?Never. Give me my local Chinese chippy anytime. At least they talk,pack everything in a bag for you,lovely fresh crispy chips,value for money and service with a smile.

Was an impromptu visit. They can make Fish & Chips GF. Use a separate fryer and vinegar is GF too. Would recommend and will visit again

Visited on a Sunday evening with my husband and toddler. Only a few tables were occupied which should have been a sign. We ordered fairly quickly then waited, and waited over half an hour for food. Whilst we we waited, staff were mulling around cleaning the restaurant. I can understand cleaning tables, but they were taking it a step further and doing the window sills etc around the restaurant. Although it is nice to know the place is clean, this was a bit odd and they could see we were obviously waiting on food but didn't seem bothered. On asking staff when our food might be ready, they went to check and promptly came back with food that had obviously been ready for a while and sat under a heat lamp. During dinner 5 disgruntled staff were congregated around the till area watching us eat - rather off-putting.

Popped in for takeaway sausage and chips on a busy Saturday afternoon. Service was quick and in no time we were enjoying beautiful chips on the seafront. Great food at a reasonable price

This is my second visit the first was in May 2023. Didn't have to wait outside this time as the restaurant wasn't busy and was seated and served promptly. Ordered large cod and half portion of chips with pot of tea for one for one at lunchtime on 3.4.24. Food arrived almost immediately so the fish must have been sitting there waiting . Cod was a tail piece this time and much smaller - flesh was dry and and off white/grey compared with the large delicious plump pure white flakes of last year . Batter was dry and dark brown not golden as before . Chips were VERY dry outside and inside with more hard pointed bits and scraps than long ones. No soya milk for tea only oat - so I had cows milk. The family next to me returned a child's burger after a couple of bites I don't know why and they refused an offer of another one. I saw larger decent looking cod served to other tables however the chips all looked the same as mine. The restaurant, crockery and cutlery were all spotlessly clean and waitresses polite. The food that was the problem. I wish I had complained about the food too but didn't I want to cause a fuss. Paid £18.50 CASH. So disappointing as I had planned to return here when I booked my day trip from Essex and was looking forward to my lunch. Last year 10/10 this year 2/10.

By far and without exception .. the best fish and chips I’ve ever tasted.. and for someone over 60, I hope that means something! The fish was beautiful , light without soggy batter… a good piece of chunky cod! If I was served this in a sit down restaurant I wouldn’t have been disappointed. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED especially as the staff were working their b*lls Off! We had a few minutes to wait but well worth it. Clearly… you get what you pay for. Perfect !!! A great end to our week in Cromer !

Lousy, greasy fish and chips, totally over priced sausage and chips at £9.50. Okey, if the two sausages had been butcher's, rather than a leading cheap supermarket brand, then £9.50 be acceptable. Matching the cheap sausages were the awful, cheap sauce sachets on the table, tasted disgusting too. No Heinz, or HP at this overpriced dump. On going to pay the bill was asked cash, or card. Tapped the machine and no sooner I'd payed when I was met with attitude by a young girl (not the slim one) stating we aren't ment to accept American Express. Hardly my fault, terribly rude attitude so would advise against eating at this establishment on the grounds of a member of staff's attitude, and generally poor food. Much better run establishment around and one the corner I'd highly recommend walking there.

MARY JANES used to be the best Chippie in Cromer not anymore its gone downhill the food is poor 😢 they are pretty expensive and staff are Misrable sadly I won't be going back it's terrible!

Mary Jane's used to be the best chippy in Norfolk in the eighties now in 2024 they are 😖 😱 and too expensive so now I go elsewhere! I was lucky to have the late Paul Days fish 🐟 and 🍟 they were lovely 😍 and reasonably priced and Paul was so kind I miss him! Due to revolting Mary Jane's 😤 ill now never go there again!!!!

Amazing quality fish and chips and really fresh . The chips are particularly tasty as they are cooked in lard. The staff were very efficient and friendly. Will definitely return.

Wow!! Great fish & chips….it’s no wonder people are queuing out the door! The service is fast, nice portion size & the haddock that we ordered was really very good. We only ate take-out, on two occasions, but there is indoor dining available. Despite being very busy the staff were very helpful, friendly & polite. ***If you are NHS/emergency services & show your ID or BlueLight card you get a discount…thank you for that, much appreciated & most kind!!!

Vegetarians well catered for had a lovely pie and chips. If you order a vegetarian option the chips are cooked in vegetable oil. We had a very good lunch and great value.

Not great service, food was warm and not as hot as would like. Especially for eating in. Sticky chairs and one chair broke on a lady. They didn’t seem too bothered but grabbed another one. Hair in batter. I wouldn’t say it’s the best food I have had or service.

Unfortunately 2 pieces of cod went in the bin. Inedible due to lots and lots of bones, large ones at that- not safe for my children to eat. I have had many fish and chips but never before had one this terrible! Unfortunately didn’t read the masses of other reviews stating the same before ordering! (To be clear the odd bone in fish is to be expected, but so many large ones isn’t).

Not been to Cromer for some time due to illness, But on this sunny October day, decided to have lunch 1pm ish in Mary Janes, I can tell you it was excellant , Really clean with very good waitress servise, Fish was butifully cooked, I have read some reviews that state the fish had bones in ? The menue clearly states the the fish may have some bones and has its skin on, Thats because its fish.. excuse the sarcasam. Cant fault the place.

Mary Janes always served good food but not any more. Two of us had cod and chips,the third person had plaice. Both the fish and the chips were greasy and tasteless. My cod was full of bones. When I commented I was told ‘we don’t fillet the fish’. Well that’s ok then,pardon me for mentioning it. At £12.50 a pop this is not a cheap meal so you would expect decent food.

Took a trip to Cromer instead of slouching in front of TV all night. Wished I'd stayed at home for tea. Busy Saturday evening. Fair do, as Cromer is a busy place in the summer.
