Very helpful girls at the front of house today. They done an excellent job of making peoples orders very quick and no stress! Beautiful chip shop and the food is just as good as if not better than the completion. Sonny C. 13th may 2025.

This was the worst fish & chips Iv ever had. The chips tasted of starch and Iv seen bigger goldfish. And for £15 i hope they close down very quickly. My partner had a steak pie which was £10 I think they must have got that from farm foods. It was tasteless and has 1 piece of meat in it.

The staff are great. But……. The environment very Modern and not one I enjoyed as I like human interaction. Even for the sit down dine in premise experience, for service you have to:- Enter your order in digital machine. Queue to collect your order. Once called Collect your order served in cardboard box with disposable eating implements. Sit in a soulless space consume and leave. The fish was ok but quite expensive. All in All an experience I will not repeat.

It was our first visit to Wells today, and although the weather could have been better, it did not spoil our great family day out! This extended to a delicious gluten free meal! The fish (choose Haddock) & chips were not greasy at all and the GF curry sauce was delicious! I fed this back to the staff. Thank you for a great experience. We'll be back soon!

I spent £37.35 on one fish and chips, a fish cake and chips, cheese bites, two curry sauces, and three cans of pop – and I left feeling completely ripped off. You have to order on a screen, wait around for your food, then eat it out of takeaway boxes, even if you’re dining in. For that kind of money, I expected far better. The cod was meant to be 6–8oz but was more like 4oz and under a centimetre thick. The chips were overcooked and dry, and the fish cake was just a frozen one – very poor quality. The curry sauces were bland and didn’t redeem the meal. To make things worse, I ended up feeling very sick later that day after eating the fish and chips. Overall, this was an incredibly disappointing experience and terrible value. I definitely won’t be going back.

We took my elderly mother out for the day in Wells, intending to dine at our favourite French’s fish and chips a few yards up the street. As they had no tables and chairs out we popped into Plattens. Nice looking restaurant, nice atmosphere, quite easy to order our food on the automatic machines, and sat down to dine. I wasn’t too put off with the very high price because our options were limited, and I realise food has become more expensive, but it was borderline extortionate. That’s when it went further downhill. The Builders tea ordered had a weird odour about it in the cheap cardboard cups. The meals arrived in cheap cardboard boxes and we had to eat with cheap wooden cutlery. Our fish and chip meals tasted very bland with little flavour. I had already tried to gee it up with salt and vinegar but I couldn’t even taste the vinegar. I put loads more on, and still couldn’t taste it. You cannot tell me that it had not been watered down, I even put some in my palm and drank it. No taste at all. Naughty! Can’t ever see a return if things remain the same. 3 stars is generous.

Lovely setting right across from the water. Dog friendly, clean and modern. Decent sized portions and delicious light crisp batter. Very helpful and welcoming staff. The only reason I didn't award 5 stars is because it's a little on the pricey side.

Cardboard boxes for takeaway great but for eating in it's a waste as can't be recycled anyway due to having food and sauce all over them so go to landfill anyway ! What's wrong with plates and cutlery? ,chips were hard and £1 for one sachet of sauce is a joke ,

When I went through the door it was all go go go. Fish and chips was flying out the door on an Easter Sunday. I was jostled to the kiosk on the wall to make my order. I ordered the cod and chips, along with a side of curry sauce. Tasty fish and chips. Cod was light and crumbled into good solid pieces. Batter was fresh and not too oily. Chips likewise were cooked very well. I would have liked to see more options on the menu though. Particularly I’d like to see Onion Rings. They are my favourite chip shop item, and to see them not on the menu was disappointing. Perhaps they will add them soon.

A coldly impersonal service, based on McDonalds business model I'm guessing.Food was ok for a seafront fish and chip shop, the gravy was the worst I've ever had the misfortune of trying.Compound all of this with teenage staff,no facility to take cash, and trying to cut a microwaved pukka pie with a cheap and nasty wooden knife and fork set. Will be voting with our feet and going elsewhere.Managers take note, its not all about making as much money per customer as you can.Repeat business matters in a small seaside town.

After 20 years + we have moved to the chip shop next door. There was no queue at platters on a very busy Sunday afternoon in wells. I can only assume it’s because they no longer except cash. French’s had a massive queue outside and we was happy to join so we could pay with legal tender for our dinner.

We have been coming to Plattens for some years now. Always enjoyed it until yesterday. It seems as if all is wanted is more customers as the expense of a nice dining experience. No plates, just takeout boxes. Sauces were prohibitively expensive. It was noisy, overcrowded and the fish was described by my friends as disgusting. The lite bit fish had no fish, it was just batter. The saving grace was the service of one particular waitress who was very helpful

Nice place. The fish was really nice. Two adults two children's meals came to around 50 pound. Not too bad considering it's a sea side town. Kids got their meals and asked for some tomato sauce for their chips. I went to the counter to ask and was given a very small sachet of sauce and told they was a pound each!! So kids didn't have any sauce, they wasn't happy and neither was I. Shame really. So lost our custom and we won't be returning. You can't charge kids a quid for one squirt of sauce lol. Times are not that bad and the people behind the counter agreed with me lol

Been coming to Plattens for years and always had good food and service although the system of how to order has been changed but we have adapted as staff on hand to explain and to assist. Today we came and it's a nightmare - dirty tables, no staff, no plates just polystyrene boxes, cutlery was wooden ones neither which enhance the taste of the food. Bedlam at the ordering computer system as it causes people to huddle round the area waiting for the food but this is hindered by the stack of tables. No access to upstairs seating area and toilets. Just a really bad system and although I realise times change this was a complete turn around of what was a really nice restaurant and is now just a take away with tables competing with Frenchs next door as a take away fish shop. More importantly the food was not as good as before - fish had way nors batter rhan was necessary and chips were really dry. Sad to say it was disappointing as we have come to expect more from Plattens. Looks like Henry's at Hunstanton is now our go to for fish and chips by the sea

Also great to see gluten free vinegar out on tables & to be able to buy gluten free curry sauce. Friendly service from the staff, we sat on a table inside that looked out over the waterfront. Of all the fish and chip shops along the front at Wells, we found Plattens to be by far the most inviting option. It’s got plenty of seating inside and feels like a “proper” restaurant. Service was slick and friendly. I can see some reviews questioning the price - but my view was that the fish and chips were superior and for sure worth the price. The cod was clearly good quality and fresh: pure white, fat and flaky. Delicious. Chips are of the perfect chip shop variety. Nice sides as well (we had mushy peas and curry sauce). For sure you can get cheaper - but don’t. Treat yourself here. It’s great. Highly recommend.

We are definitely Platten’s people. We always go there for our family fish & chip supper. We have just spent half term in Wells & of course Platten’s provided exquisite cod, the best chips, crunchy pickled gherkins & the children ate the mushy peas too. The fish is perfect, skin off, thin batter & not too greasy & it just flakes on the fork. We tried another Wells Fish shop but it didn’t come close - fish particularly a poor specimen at the other place. Platten’s platinum standard as always. Go there & you will experience a divine fish & chip supper.

Food's great. Service isn't. We were seated in the restaurant amidst uncleaned tables, by a staff member who didn't seem to think this was a problem and couldn't tell us how long it would take for the dirty tables to be cleaned (the person who then came to clean them was very apologetic). Sat for 15 minutes before someone told us you had to go and order from screens, they don't take your order at the table. They hadn't told us this when seating is. Food arrived, asked if we needed anything else. Asked for cutlery, was told to go and get it myself. The food itself was really good - good quality fish, nice vegetarian options, crispy chips. The service inside really lets this place down, as does the lack of interest in keeping Wells beautiful - the piles of branded rubbish along the quayside is really unpleasant (would it take much to show some care for the area and provide extra bins for customers, or given the prices that are charged maybe use some of the money to employ someone to help clean up outside so everyone's not surrounded by piles of empty food containers saying Plattens creates memories?).

*Donna Lloyd - Accommodation Administrator has since resolved this matter. Thank you very much Donna* Disappointing Experience at Plattens Fish and Chips We had high hopes for our visit to Plattens Fish and Chip shop in Wells-Next-The-Sea, especially given our previous positive experiences in the area. Unfortunately, this visit left us extremely disappointed. We spent a considerable amount on seven portions of fish and chips, expecting the quality we've always associated with Wells. However, the reality was far from what we anticipated. The fish was incredibly dry and seemed to be composed mostly of batter, with barely any actual fish inside. It honestly tasted like it had been left over from the previous day or had been severely overcooked. This was not the fresh, delicious meal we were looking forward to. To make matters worse, when we raised our concerns with the staff, they were pleasant but unhelpful. Despite showing them images of the disappointing food, they told us they couldn’t do anything because we didn’t have the actual food with us—returning the food from our caravan site in a busy town just wasn’t feasible. We were assured that a manager would get in touch to address our complaint, but sadly, we’ve heard nothing back. This lack of response has only added to our frustration. Given the price we paid and the poor quality of the food, this experience was simply unacceptable. We felt compelled to leave this review to warn others and hopefully prevent similar disappointments. Sadly, we cannot recommend Plattens based on this experience.

Hello I just wanted to raise how disappointing and shocking your fish and chip shop was today... I've been coming to Wells for over 30 years n always chosen your chippy because I feel it's the best HOWEVER today I was so disappointed to fine at 12 o'clock the chippy empty and people genuinely walking away.. Your staff behaviour was shocking, unwelcoming and disrespectful.... While waiting for our food that cost nearly £25 I had to stand and endure 6/7 young members of staff shouting at your alexa to play the most god awful music from artic monkeys to 80s rock at full volume.... All your staff are stood around n it still took them 15 mins to cook soft uncooked, luke warm chips.... While people were genuinely leaving your shop... OAPs coming in for a sea side treat having to leave probably because they couldn't here themselves think... It was ridiculous and even sat across the harbour wall you could still here it... Shame Next time we visit I think I'll give French's ago.... Shocking

Ordered our food as a takeaway then sat across the road on the harbour wall. Service was fine, friendly staff, nice atmosphere of the place. There was a wait as we visited probably at peak time and they had to make fresh batch. Not complaining about that as would rather have fresh fish and chips than food which has been sitting around. Staff didn't stop working and were efficient. I thought the portion sizes were good and the food was great. Felt it was a little expensive, but this seems to be sign of the times. I guess their overheads have increased too and that is passed onto the customers. Soft drinks are expensive. The review asks to grade the rooms, cannot comment on this as only used the takeaway. I would visit again and recommend to others.

Don't get me wrong, service was fantastic. Everyone worked hard to keep things flowing. But food portions were ok, chips were ok. Yesterday we got a chippy from Cromer that frankly wiped the floor with this place and was a lot cheaper, as its about £16-18 for a very standard meal it's just way to steep. It's Norfolk trying to charge Dorset prices which you just can't justify. Mum had a pie which was really sub standard. You'd be better off with a pukka pie for a few quid. It still has potential but either seriously up the food or bring down the prices substantially.

Had fish and chips in the restaurant. Not the worst fish supper I’ve ever had, but a long way from the best, and at the prices I expected better. The fish was a bit dry and the chips a bit rubbery. Fish and Chips at the seaside ought to be better than this.

I’ve been a regular visitor to Wells next Sea for 25 years now. Upon our most recent visit we decided to eat at Plattens mainly due to being able to sit down and dine. Unfortunately this was a poor decision, it seems that this establishment has undergone some changes and not for the best either. We were given menus which showed a fish and chips meal including salad and mushy peas for £18.95, the waiter then informed us that these were out of date and the meals came with 50/50 chips and salad, or 100% chips and that the mushy peas were now an additional side at a cost. So you got less but for the same price. We ordered 4 meals and one drink at approx £66.50, yes you read that right, £66 for fish and chips. I would love to tell you that it was a culinary delight and angels were dancing on my tongue but no, it was a meagre portion of poor quality cuisine. The fish was small, the batter soggy and stodgy, it also tasted like it had been cooked with last years oil. The chip portion was small and instantly forgettable, it was accompanied by some greenery which was a salad, apparently. Five rocket leaves and some nuts and Parmesan doesn’t qualify as a salad. The final insult was I ordered Haddock, I’m not sure where the Haddock came from but it was very similar to cod, in actual fact a fellow diner who also ordered Haddock didn’t think it was actually Haddock either! After leaving I felt I had been completely shafted and relived of my money. Don’t dine here do what I should have done and gone next door to French’s and ate it on the harbour wall.

Super impressed with our meal here tonight. All the staff couldn't do enough to help, even though it was clearly a stressful evening with a power cut. The food was expensive but actually I think it may be the nicest fish and chips I have ever had! Definitely plan to go back. Sometimes you definitely get what you pay for!

Very expensive for what you get, £18.99 for fish and a handful of chips. Also no nappy changing facilities available upstairs

Card machines out of order on the day we visited and were taking cash only. We wanted to dine in rather than takeaway so obtained some cash and were duly seated. Although it was table service had to order from the counter. Insisted on paying with order. Fish was a good size and plenty of chips. Unfortunately the fish was very greasy and not very white, batter too soggy to eat. At £18.95 per portion overpriced and poor quality. Will not be returning any time soon.

We have been going to wells since we were young and this fish and chip shop has been always good. We were very disappointed with the fish today it was dry and very over cooked. The chips were dry and very well done. Not very happy with the quality today.

Having been a regular diners and promoters of Plattens for +10 years we were totally disappointed by our experience today. Plattens have been very vocal on social media about all the changes & improvements that they have been making, I can confirm none of these seem to have been for the benefit of the customer. It’s a seated service in the “restaurant”, yet you are asked to place your order at a touch screen on the wall, as if you were in McDonalds, there’s no table ordering. The touch screen way over complicates the simple process of ordering of fish and chips, why do I have to choose which mandatory side dish I want and must select the “50/50” (salad/chips) ratio or “all chips”? The touch screen is mounted so high on the wall that I had to assist the person in front of me to reach the <back> button, even though she was on tip toe! Order arrived promptly, probably the only positive aspect of our dining experience at Plattens. BUT, honey they’ve shrunk the portions, cod was insipid, scampi devoid of content, chips under-cooked and mushy peas just tasted weird. The final insult, £18.95 for Fish & Chips, £3.10 for a cup of tea, WHAT? Plattens, you might be on the sea front, but prices are way out of line compared to other local restaurant and pubs that provide a superior meal and service. As comparison, No.1 restaurant (2024 award winning) in Cromer, fish and chips £16.50, Eric’s in Thornham £15.50, etc, etc. Looking around at other tables, most had left food on their plates, and comments from our dining neighbours were certainly not complimentary. You have lost us as a loyal customer and referrer; there’s plenty of choice of great, affordable seafood in Wells-Next-The-Sea and along the North Norfolk coast. Goodbye.

We have been here numerous times and always been happy, but unfortunately things have changed not for the better. We arrived and were told ordering now is on a tablet screen that wasn’t a problem, looked for the light bite fish and chips after asking it is now the children's fish and chips! We ordered 2x fish and chips curry sauce 2 bread rolls and drinks. The food arrived my partner cut into his fish (well batter) about three fork fulls of dried fish inside, I told the assistant who was very nice and apologetic and she got him another one, the portions have now changed 5 oz of fish (questionable) and hand full of chips and some rocket to make the plate look fuller. We came away nearly £30 lighter and still hungry! I’m sorry to say we will not recommend this place to anybody now, and will never return ourselves again.

Edit: I’ve amended my score, the staff were apologetic and gave us complementary drinks, but I worry the system has flaws and this could happen again, this was the issue not the staff. Service was very slow, took over an hour for food to arrive (we ordered using the self servicing terminal, but when queried it hadn’t gone through to the kitchen, even though a table next to did the same and got food fine.) Food was a bit overpriced for the quality.

I came here Saturday night this week quite late on with my young son. The lovely girl working there heard someone swear, told them not to swear in front of children and apologised on their behalf. Such a rarity these days for someone to acknowledge such a thing, it was much appreciated. Apart from that she and the young boy behind the desk went out of their way to help us and were super friendly and attentive. To top it all off the food was out of this world! My (fussy) lad ate 4 sausages and said they were the best ever! Amazing food, amazing location, amazing staff. Thank you so much. Definitely recommended.

Breakfast was very good with an excellent choice of freshly cooked food, cereals, pastries and fruit. Will definitely return and would certainly recommend staying here

No disabled access currently - 01/05/2025. Be aware that the Holkham Estate is currently resurfacing the parking at Lady Ann Drive and this is not mentioned on the Holkham website. We were directed to park on a rough field, a long way away from the cafe and beach walkway and the field is not suitable for wheelchairs/walkers/mobility aids. We checked with the Attendants and there was no option to drop off less mobile family closer to the walkway on more stable ground so we left and went to Wells-next-the-sea Harbour instead, which was accessible.

Ordered by phone (takeaway only) and was told 15 mins - very quick! Food was ready on arrival, well packed, very hot, mid price range I would say. Order all correct and was absolutely delicious. I’m often disappointed with Chinese but this was lovely. Also, plenty for a second dinner! So good portion sizes. Would use again.
