booked a two night break dinner/breakfast .
approaching hotel from the car park I was a bit apprehensive seemed a bit old and dark, reminded me of the titanic ! what a staircase, have to say from the reception it opens out to large rooms/bar area that have been revamped .
our room was massive and newly decorated very clean.
The dining room was old world charm done up, it was very busy as they had a group of german tourists in .
All the staff need a RISE they where speed on wheels and kept smiling and had time for a word on taking the food/drinks order.
Both had the steak followed by cheese board, absolutely fantastic meal really good.
wine started at £19.50 bottle we had a merlot or two at £22 slipped down nicely.
breakfast didnt disappoint.
TIP the no 25 bus is £2 for a round robin route that stops just near the hotel goes Barbican, Hoe, town centre
Delicious vegetable curries, pilai rice and plain naan bread, believe me you do not need flavoured naan here! The vegetable madras if rich and full of flavour and the Saag aloo is out of this world and heavenly too.
They kindly added 3 scrumptious onion Bhaji's free to our order which was a lovely surprise.
Unfortunately, There are very few pubs like this one left. It’s a real pub with real characters - and it hasn’t been titivated up and sanitised to please the masses.
It may be a bit rough around the edges but this adds to its charm.
We have been here on a few occasions as we visit the area regularly. Once when we called in, there was a retirement do for one of the locals who worked at the dockyard. We were made to feel very welcome and included in the local banter. On another occasion, there was a wake - again everyone was extremely hospitable. We got chatting to the ex-husband of the woman who’d died, he was there with his new wife, both very well-oiled - and tattooed - he said that although he couldn’t stand his ex, he still wanted to give her a good send off!
I have been to many pubs over the years, but I will not forget this one - long may it last.
Una agradable cafetería luminosa y moderadamente concurrida hacia el fondo de la ciudad ahora se comercializa como City Grill y tiene su propio listado en la sección del restaurante Plymouth como City Grill.
Ordered a curry from here had a black hair in my curry, rang the restaurant told me that they’d refund me or send me out more food I said I’d like a refund on my card he then proceeded to tell me he’d deliver the money to my door instead as it was quicker than waiting 3-5 days for a refund off just eat😂😂 absolute scammers poor food quality 🤮 he also fully admitted the fact there was a hair on the food and said “that would be from the boys in the kitchen sorry”. Never ordering again.
Amazing big fresh sandwiches, a big choice of fillings, on freshly baked bread, a choice of toasted or not, it gets very busy but moves fast. The staff are friendly and helpful. Starbucks drinks are sold here also, the caramel macchiato is the best! The meal deals are a bargain! I came here most days when at uni!
It’s gone!
I’ve been buying my kids stocking fillers from here for the last 10 years or so and was mortified to visit today to see that the stall no longer existed.
It always had a fantastic selection, both new and some of our old favourites.
Very sad to see it go but the owner told me last year, that it had been a struggle since Covid lockdowns. It obviously took its toll.
Farewell, but don’t know where I’m going to get my stocking fillers now!? Edible bank notes, bars of nougat, bubble gum, giant laces, jaw breaker gob stoppers…….😭
Great service from Billy Nichol (Manager) he was a wonderful and accommodating young man. Having come from Kent for a visit he ensured we had a lovely breakfast meal. He also went above and beyond when I left my sunglasses in the pub - delivering them directly back to me, safe and sound. Best regards, Lucy
