booked a two night break dinner/breakfast . approaching hotel from the car park I was a bit apprehensive seemed a bit old and dark, reminded me of the titanic ! what a staircase, have to say from the reception it opens out to large rooms/bar area that have been revamped . our room was massive and newly decorated very clean. The dining room was old world charm done up, it was very busy as they had a group of german tourists in . All the staff need a RISE they where speed on wheels and kept smiling and had time for a word on taking the food/drinks order. Both had the steak followed by cheese board, absolutely fantastic meal really good. wine started at £19.50 bottle we had a merlot or two at £22 slipped down nicely. breakfast didnt disappoint. TIP the no 25 bus is £2 for a round robin route that stops just near the hotel goes Barbican, Hoe, town centre

Stayed here as a family of 4 over a weekend. The hotel is very conveniently located and was well priced with a Travelzoo voucher deal. Veggie breakfast was delicious, all staff super friendly and the hotel charms with gorgeous historical and period features and facts throughout. Definitely recommend!

First and foremost, the staff were great but let down badly by the kitchen. Stale bread rolls, soggy crostini, chicken was far from supreme it was so dried out and the fondant potato was hard but greasy. While little could go wrong with cheese, the brownie was solid and had a feel that it had been sitting for as long as the rolls which were actually crisper than the crostini. In fairness to the front of house staff, we weren't charged for the chocolate brick.

We visited the Duke for a meal with a group of friends. We’ve eaten in most of the restaurants in Plymouth but this is up there with the very best. I had the steak with blue cheese sauce which was incredible, my wife had lamb which she assures me was equally as good. Drinks and food all reasonably priced for the quality. After dinner we retired to the bar which was managed by friendly staff. Thank you to all of the staff, we shall visit again soon.

We dined here recently with a large group of friends and the whole evening was lovely. We enjoyed 3 well presented and delicious courses followed by a cheese board and coffee. The accompanying red wine was also particularly good. The service was friendly and efficient and we felt very welcomed. Some people may be put off by the idea of dinner at a hotel restaurant instead of a stand- alone establishment but I would thoroughly recommend giving the Duke a go, it is very worthy of it's 2 rosettes and we will definitely be back.

I came to Plymouth with my mum to go to the theatre. We stayed in this hotel as it is in walking distance to the theatre and great restaurants!! Also nearby there is a shopping centre. The hotel is very old fashioned but I personally think it looked cool. The room was very basic. The beds were super comfortable. Unfortunately our room was very very cold as one of the windows wouldn’t shut properly and the radiator would not work properly. On arrival we had to wait a while to be checked in and when we were the door key would not work so we had to go get another one. The WiFi wouldn’t work even though it was supposed to. The shower was very slow to warm up. They had free parking but not enough spaces so we had to pay to park somewhere else, also you can not stay in the car park after you have checked out!! Not posh at all the room looks quite cheap and tacky

Having stayed here a while ago, I have it the benefit of the doubt and booked in again. Appreciated that this is a popular time of year but the amount I had to pay for the quality of the room is way out of proportion. Room 309 is a poor excuse of a room. The view from the window is of a very dark and dismal internal fire escape that offers very little light and no air movement at all. Which on a warm day like today is needed. This room should not be used apart from being utilised as a store room. The bathroom was slightly above average which was the best point of the stay. The quality of the room made me escape for the evening as not to get too depressed so I can't speak of the bar or restaurant. Britannia really need to up their game and it out people in rooms like this. Very disappointed.

It's the second time I've stayed at the hotel. Both times the rooms have been clean and spacious. It's an old hotel and you can see certain areas need a little uplift but that's to be expected. I love the original lift and the sweeping staircase. The breakfast is cooked to order with a help yourself cereal bar. The evening dinner on this occasion was disappointing. We've been to many an evening ball here and only on this occasion can we say we were disappointed with the food. But all in all its a lovely hotel with lovely staff.

Due to varying reasons we had our first 'professional' Christmas Day lunch and to be honest we faced it with trepidation. Our fears were unfounded however as the staff and catering were above expectations. On arrival we were greeted and directed to the lounge bar for the 'on arrival' mulled wine whilst we waited for our reservation slot. However, we were told that we could enter the dining room when we were ready which made the event seem less formal. The dining room was tastefully directed and the only music was provided by a pianist who was sat just outside of the dining hall playing various Christmas tunes rather than loud speaker driven music which would have reduced the table conversation. There was also the unexpected appearance of a magician in between our starter courses (6 courses overall) who was very good and unassuming. The food arrived in a very timely manner and was hot and tasty at the table. Anything that gets a thumbs up from the older, more demanding, members of the party is always a plus. We had brought some drinks from the bar and were not pressured into buying further drinks at the table - always a premium for a hotel/restaurant - unless we required. Which we did - it was Christmas after all.The menu options had been good and no member of the party was disappointed with their choice. Noting that this meal was of 6 course the portions provided were appropriate. One of the party had been unable to find a starter that satisfied them and the hotel were able to provide an alternative - pre-ordered - without bother. The final course was inclusive of the coffees and what was labelled as petit fours. When a large plate of petit fours arrived this seemed more than enough for our needs but to have another plate delivered was well received, especially as the staff were accommodating to provide a box for those petit fours that remained. All in all this was a very good experience and we would have already determined that we would repeat this experience at this venue again without question.

I attended a works Christmas Dinner at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel, Plymouth today and the starter of soup was lovely, the roast was pretty average (the turkey was okayish, if a little overcooked, but the vegetables were rock hard, they hadn't been cooked at all) and the dessert was nice. As well as the main course being a disappointment I found the service to be poor i.e. staff crossed in front of you whilst talking, didn't say excuse me and when passing a plate to one of the staff to try and help they just took it from me and didn't utter a word. When coffee was served no teaspoons were brought out and I had to ask for one and then share that one with a colleague. I am very disappointed with this as when I had a Christmas Dinner there a few years ago it was lovely. I actually visit the Duke of Cornwall for a lunchtime coffee fairly often and the service then is good so don't understand why it wasn't good on this occasion.Conveyor belt food; poor service.

I was moved from my first room because I could not shower. There wasn't even a grab bar and the shower was in a bath tub. The rooms are very musty, floor creak. A very old fashioned elevator that I didn't mind, in fact, it is quite charming. The main problem is the place seems dirty. The architecture is interesting and the hotel could be charming if some effort was put in restoring it. Breakfast was good, the bright spot.

I am a member of the Loch class frigates association, these were frigates all built in war time and named after Lochs on Scotland, all scrapped in mid 60's, and those who served in them are members of the LCFA. Annually we re unite and have for many years enjoyed stays in various parts of the country. but this year we chose Guzz [as us old tars call Plymouth] and we stayed at the wonderful Duke of Cornwall hotel and I have to say that since I became a member of LCFA this is one of the better hotels I enjoyed with my wife. Despite The hotel being built in in 1863 it was good, clean, with helpful happy staff and the restaurant was one of the best organised I have been to, the service was excellent, and the entertainer at our Gala dinner was of Royal command standard. If I had one criticism it would only be that the management, knowing that they were about to host a Royal Naval get together you would have thought that dark naval rum would be available behind the bar and not have to visit the local offy to get some in, we always considered it to be Nelsons blood, and it is said that "On the 8th day god created rum in order that sailors would not take over the world"I loved my stayJim Palmer-Hoyes ex RN

Having eaten here one Mother's Day and had a wonderful lunch, we decided to buy a £40 meal voucher as a Christmas present for my parents-in-law. At the time of booking, no-one explained that lunches are no longer served in their restaurant : we rang up to book table for lunch and were told that only bar snacks would be available. When we arrived for the bar snack on Sunday March 20, the extremely unhelpful receptionist informed us that we couldn't use our £40 voucher to pay for the bar snacks - it had to be used to purchase an evening meal; also we wouldn't be able to eat food at a proper table because they had all been laid up for the evening. As my father-in-law is 86, eating out in the evening is not something he would choose to do and he would certainly struggle to eat a meal from a coffee table. The receptionist's attitude bordered on rude and we were about to leave to eat somewhere else when the duty manager, James, came on the scene and saved the day. Not only did he allow us to use the voucher for our lunchtime meal but he made a table available in the restaurant so that our elderly relatives could eat in comfort. We can't thank him enough for resolving the situation with such pleasantness. We had a very acceptable meal in the hotel restaurant but would think twice about returning due to the 'couldn't care less' attitude of the receptionist. We could have understood her behaviour better if the place had been busy but we were the only people eating there at that time so there was no excuse for her being so inflexible. Bravo James for saving the day - the Duke of Cornwall needs more staff like you.

The lounge bar in the Duke of Cornwall is very old fashioned and predictable. Limited uninspiring and entirely predictable limited menu, intended I suspect, for this people who are very hungry and unable to easily travel any distance to eat and who are prepared to put up with expensive basic fodder in time of need. The hotel seems to have made a decision to have only limited support for this facility and room service. They may want to review that approach if they are to keep the Lounge Bar food viable. The opening of the new medium to high quality 'Eatery' opened a couple of weeks ago just across the mini roundabout only a hundred metres away or less, weeks to be offering very good quality and value food. It has it's own Tripadvisor listing and visitors to or residents in the hotel can do their own research to see whether they want to venture over.

We had a fabulous steak dinner in the lounge bar before crossing the road to see a show at the Pavillions. The ambience was great, the staff lovely and the steak delicious. All good so far...... however, we ordered dessert which took forever to come so after chasing the barman as we were going to be late. When it arrived it had obviously been frozen and left to defrost on the side and was very disappointing. The eton mess consisted of soggy defrosting raspberries (about 6 in total) and 6 polo-mint size pieces of meringue, the banana parfait dessert was completely tasteless. It was such a shame as we had such an enjoyable main meal and couple of hours in the lounge bar that we were already planning a return trip and to stay the night but the dessert fiasco left a nasty taste in our mouth (both literally and figuratively). Would recommend though.

Above average service and food. Quite a popular rendezvous for the Plymouth business crowd and for those in town to take in shows at the nearby theatres

Not a great deal of parking on a busy day but Ok if just dining there. Pleasant good staff and nice old worldly charm. Not a lot going on during the day and not enough staff maybe at the bar.

Had the rare opportunity for just the two of us to have a night out and why not start with a lovely meal in beautiful character filled surroundings. The food and service were both fantastic and set the evening off to a great start.

Not many bars in town have a car park.... and fantastic grand rooms. Service is always good and staff helpful. Been to functions here many times and its one of the better places to go in Plymouth.Recently attended a daytime function with Plymouth Raiders and the food was very good.

Myself and a friend dropped in here for a coffee. After walking around trying to find out were to order and being ignored by various members of staff, we had a tea and a coffee. They do not do speciality coffee's such as latte, cappuccino. So just bog standard it was. When they bought it out we we could only laugh, the crockery was disgusting. Stainless steel, which looked about 10 years old and not even polished. The whole experience was just very unpleasant. To top it off the coffee was vile. Don't bother really not worth it.

We had lunch at Piermasters yesterday and the food was outstanding. The fish and chips was the best we’ve had in Plymouth and the Bouillabaisse was delicious and packed with seafood and fish. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, a great experience. We’ve always had great meal at Piermasters, however yesterday was outstanding. Well done to you all.

Great food, friendly service. Katie was a very polite and professional server. Value for money. Very little waiting time for our food. Great choice on the salad bar. Very clean.

Last year we discovered the unattended converted horse box near Devonport Park but in January we found the established shop/cafe in Albert Road. Very friendly and good selection of food all home baked. We think round the back of this cafe.
