As so many reviews testify âShoalâ has to be the best fish and chip restaurant we have ever experienced. Nicely designed, clean and comfortable restaurant setting or takeaway the choice is yours. In the restaurant all the staff are friendly, chatty in a good way and helpful - after we had finished we were asked âDo you want the bill or to chill?â which is an absolute first: in so many places the bill would have appeared as a means to get us out of the door and free up the table. Food? Perfectly cooked haddock in light batter, âproperâ chips, minted peas and good tartare sauce. We werenât drinking but short wine list is good by the bottle or reasonably priced glass. There are no shortage of places to eat in Winchester and âShoalâ is deservedly one of the best.

Have been to shoal many times and what is fabulous the food is as amazing every time cooked to perfection. Batter that melts on your tongue simple delicious đ the staff always very polite and itâs spotlessly clean . A real treat .

Totally surprising place making delicious alcohol-free cocktails with extremely researched ingredients, the vast majority of them locally sourced if not self-grown. The place is like an intimate garden; the scent the choose to diffuse is relaxing and interesting. The owners are charming and welcoming, as we entered they gave us a tasting tour of their specialties!

Small portions, generic and boring menu. The tofu salad was mostly just raw vegetables cut too big to comfortably eat. Not enough tofu, sauce, rice or avocado. The kimchi dumplings were squishy and bland. I've eaten better from a motorway service station.

We were visiting Winchester for the weekend and fancied a roast lunch. We were a group of five and found this place online that had good reviews. It was a short walk from the centre of the city, but it was so worth the extra steps. We found a beautiful little pub with loads of character, and had one of the best roast dinners that we have all had in a very long while. Between us we had the beef, pork and chicken , all of which were beautifully cooked, with the most perfect roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings, and really flavoursome vegetables. The roasted parsnips and carrots were particularly good. And the gravy you could quite easily have drink from a mug, it was that delicious. After all that we thought dessert might be a bit of a let-down, but quite the opposite. The orange marmalade bakewell tart (yes you've read that right) was amazing. Beautifully thin, short pastry and the tartness of the marmalade balanced so well with the sweetness of the frangipane and the (nicely thick) chantilly cream. And to top it all the service was really friendly and attentive. We all agreed that, if this was your local, you would never go anywhere else.

We've ordered a takeaway from this restaurant 3 times. The first time it was ok, the second time it was really good, but the third time will ensure we never order from here again. The pork in the sui mai dumplings was completely raw and the chow mein noodles had no flavour, despite opting for spice. The spring rolls were also soggy. But mainly it was the raw meat... đ€ą

Decided to eat a late light lunch here when after visited Winchester Cathedral on an away day. A walk from the cathedral its was near the bus stop for the Park and Ride bus to get us back to our car. We had eaten at the Horsham branch of Chococo before, so knew that we would find something suitable on the menu. Not wanting a large meal, we settled upon a cheese toast and a cheese and marmite scone (with butter) along with a coffee and a mocha (both with the welcome choice of oat milk). The staff were both charming and efficient and they brought the meal to the table for us, (you order at the counter). You can select the percentage of dark chocolate in your Mocha, which made a nice change. There is a large array of chocolates to buy on offer, and a choice of Gelato ice creams as well.
