Such a shame that Charlie is giving up. Have enjoyed his food for 30 years in harpenden then Aston Clinton. It has always been good. I understand Charlie's brother may continue in the kitchen for a while, as a handover to the new owner. I hope the new restaurant will be supported as good chinese restaurants are far and few between.

After hearing so much good feedback about the Woolpack, decided to give it a go! Me and my friend decided to have a lunch on there lunch meal deal, and to say it was appalling is an understatement. The starter was mushrooms and ciabatta. The mushrooms cold and ciabatta burnt. My friend had calamari which was swimming in oil. Both of us had steak sandwiches, chewy as anything and drenched in horseradish (which we both asked for none of), the bread was burnt and the best part was the fries and mayo!!! Staff weren’t helpful and not friendly in the slightest! A poor and unfortunate visit. Hopefully better for others!!!

Arrived for a meal to be asked have you booked a table (we hadn’t) to be told we don’t accept walk in customers ( the restaurant was virtually empty)? But could sit in the bar side area and order from the same restaurant menu. I ordered a mixed grill with steak medium rare, and my partner ordered a bacon burger after approximately 40 minutes later the food arrived, my steak was so overcooked it was borderline black and bone dry, the triple cooked chips were barely cooked once never mind triple cooked, my partner’s burger was also burnt to a crisp it looked like a carpet tile and the bacon shattered into pieces when trying to cut it. I wouldn’t trust the chef (using that title very loosely) to make toast. Worse experience ever I wouldn’t return even if the food was free and I was starving! Avoid… top prices for extremely substandard food.

I had not been in the Bell since a Black tie New Year’s Eve party in 1970, when it boasted the finest wine cellar in Europe, owned by Gerard Manley Harris. Today’s Bell is somewhat tired by comparison, but the fire in the lounge was welcoming. This was an overnight stay to attend a 100th birthday party four miles away. The bedroom was fine, well appointed and an excellent shower. At breakfast I ordered Eggs Royale, which came with ham and not salmon, but I was in a rush, so I did nothing about it.
