Congratulations to this fine establishment for transporting me straight back to 1995 — a simpler time when card machines were witchcraft and tax evasion was apparently just good business sense. Called ahead to place an order, everything seemed fine… until I showed up, ready to pay like a normal human being in 2025 — with a debit card. No mention on the phone, and not even some sympathy for my kids who came to collect it. Let me get this straight: you’re running a restaurant in the modern world, only taking cash (how convenient), failing to tell customers in advance, and then sending hungry children home empty-handed because you can’t be bothered to communicate basic payment options? That’s not just bad service — that’s borderline shameful. Whether this little “cash only” policy is a clever way to avoid card fees or a not-so-clever way to dodge taxes, I can’t say. But I can say I won’t be returning — and neither should anyone else who doesn’t carry a wad of twenties in their sock. Absolutely disgraceful. Zero stars if I could.

A lovely find when I was staying in Jesmond recently. I'm not a vegan but I very much feel that vegan beer ought to be more widely available (finings only make the stuff look nice) and the ales on offer prove the point very nicely. A nice collection of board-games, tasteful music at a reasonable volume, friendly locals and staff all add up to a calm and cosy atmosphere. This is the kind of pub where I could happily sit and read a book all day. A very pleasant experience.

Food is generally good, although they do sometimes mix orders resulting in literally a 'mixed bag' of food. Where this place let's it down is service, there seems to be nobody who is in charge and the staff seem poorly trained. They don't even know their own menu and ordering is often a chore - the iPad till set up should be fairly straightforward to use but even this confuses their front of house staff. Top marks for the Katsu Curry, and the wraps are good.

The library is wonderful and has many study areas that suit everyone, in addition to the educational resources that are easily available. All services are excellent and the location of the library is exceptional. It only needs more variety in the meals served in the cafeteria.

I have put positive reviews on before from dining in but I had to add one today for Santanas Sunday Takeaway dinners! They’re outstanding for the price! £11.95 for a full roast & a starter!! Absolutely LUSH! Can’t beat it! I got a take away dinner a few weeks ago from a pub local it was £14.95 and it wasn’t half as nice! Can’t beat a Santanas!

I am absolutely appalled by the handling of allergies at this venue. A friend had listed all her allergies and was told multiple times the food was safe to eat. It was not. The food that was served resulted in anaphylactic shock requiring paramedic intervention. The manager had an attitude and refused to tell us exactly what was in the food as the reaction was onsetting. This kind of behavior was disgusting to say the least and I sincerely hope anyone ever considering this venue takes their business elsewhere. It’s hard to believe there are people who can be this grossly ignorant about someone’s life and wellbeing.

Visited for breakfast with my partner, was given unclear instructions on how to order - everyone was pleasant, however when approached by one of the workers asking if we had ordered, I said ‘not yet’ to which she bluntly and (quite frankly) rudely responded ‘we’re open til five, you know?’ and walked away. This would’ve been fine as a joke if she told us how to order, but since we weren’t greeted by any staff, we didn’t know. My partner ordered a full english, and the quality of the ingredients were good, however £16 for one sausage and two rare bits of bacon is a bit steep for up north. I ordered the ‘açai’, which was a lovely greek yoghurt bowl with not one drop of açai. I would appreciate true advertising as although the menu did state it had some greek yoghurt, my lactose intolerant self didn’t know I would just be getting a bowl of that. Plus side, fruit and honey were both really fresh and plenty yummy granola. Would we return? No. This is only due to the pricing and misinformation on the menu - coffee was really nice, and my partner may pop back for an ice cream.
