EDIT: Came back today to satisfy my cravings for chips. The lovely couple greeted me as soon as I came in and asked if it was me who'd left the recent review with a big smile. I said yes because the chips were bloody delicious, so I have returned for more 💜 Ordered a large battered sausage with large chips and small chips. Everything cooked fresh (as usual). The amount of batter on the sausage was perfect, not too much and not too little. It was fried to perfection. The chips were delicious. This is the best chip shop in Ely 💜 Been hearing good things from my partner regarding this chip shop. Decided to come in today for some large chips. They were cooked to order and still very hot when I got home. The smell coming from the chip shop as you go past smells delicious. The smell when you go in is also delicious. The gentleman and his partner are very friendly and serve with a smile and great personality. I was greeted as soon as I got through the door. When I got home. Chips were still perfect hot and tasted SO good. Will definitely be returning here

Le Spice in Ely is a fantastic local Indian restaurant with a warm, community feel. The waiters were polite, jovial, and made the evening feel welcoming and relaxed. The atmosphere was lovely, with a thoughtful touch in the beautifully folded napkins on the table. The menu offers a great balance between familiar British Indian favourites like korma and jalfrezi, and more traditional Indian dishes that add real depth to the choices available. We started with popadoms for the table. The plain ones were just as expected, but the spicy popadoms really stood out—light sesame notes and a gentle kick made them something special. These came with the classic popadom sauces, which paired nicely. For my main, I had the lamb shank, which was absolutely divine. The lamb was tender and fell elegantly off the bone, served in a rich, spiced tomato sauce that complemented the meat beautifully. The peshwari naan was also a highlight—plump, soft, and just the right amount of sweet. Highly recommended if you’re after great food in a friendly, local setting.

We've been customers of Sylhet since it opened as a small takeaway 25ish years ago. Our takeaway last night was delivered piping hot and the food really was exceptional. It's rarely been anything but over the years. Thanks for your continued great food and service!

Had a very poor quality breakfast bap from Ely Food Station recently. The sausage was cheap poor quality. They put egg mayonnaise in the bap rather than a fried egg which was very strange and not a pleasant surprise at all. The Bap itself was cheap poor quality. It cost me £5.75 which I thought was expensive but was happy to pay if it was actually edible but this was terrible. Don’t waste your money here.

We always enjoy coming to Le Spice and were not disappointed on this occasion in terms of the service and atmosphere. The service is always exquisite! Its also extremely welcoming. The food on this occasion was not quite up to the standards of service. There was a real lack of freshness and taste from the curry and particularly the meat. We also had onion bhaji's but similarly these were very small and hard and lacked the quality you would usually expect. The rice and naan breads were very tasty however. We will be back and hope that this was a one-off, we are sure the chef must have just had an off day !

What a gem; this place is amazing as are the super staff. Beer drinkers heaven with well over 100 to chose from in bottles and cans plus some great draught beers. Come here every year around my birthday and never fail to be made very welcome. Heartily recommend paying this place a visit and its only 150m from Ely Cathedral.

Excellent cod and chips served by new owner. Generous portions and freshly cooked to order. Served in a box to keep it warm and secure. Good online ordering experience

On a warm Spring day I can think of no where better to go for lunch than The Old Fire Engine House. I hadn't been for many years, not living in the area, but I intended meeting two old and dear friends who were visiting, so Ely was the place. Still under the same ownership for 57 years, it was everything and more than I remembered. Light and airy, the tables spread nicely apart and art to purchase on all the walls.... Starters, Mains and Desserts just as good as ever, the service friendly and attentive. It's not all about stars and accolades, but excellent ingredients consistently prepared and cooked with expertise, it was a pure joy to return, I certainly won't leave it so long before my friends and I return.

Had a flat white, but milk was so oversteamed the coffee had no consistency, was watery and tasted very weak. Could have taken it back but because understaffed would have had to wait in queue for another twenty minutes. Oh well - first world problems eh!

Sylhet used to be exceptional, but it seems as though they have rebranded and decided to go with a new aesthetic. It isn't working. My chicken curry was sweet, really sweet, served with a very hard-boiled egg on top. It made me feel nauseous: sickly sweet curry with chicken and egg! Other curries had a lot of food colouring -- far too much. They don't have a drinks licence, so we ordered water. The service was slow, though the server was very friendly and smiley. I won't be returning again unless they revert to the way they used to be.
