Alan Fish Bar in East Cambridgeshire

Enjoyed a well sized regular cod that was thick and full in flavour minus skin so I could enjoy the whole of the batter on the underside rather than leaving it because it has fish skin stuck to it. The regular chips were nicely crisp and fluffy on the inside with a decent curry sauce to add a little extra to them, and taste just as good with just some salt & vinegar which you can put on as little or as much as you like. All the food is always cooked fresh so do not expect the usual in and out within a few minutes…but you are getting QUALITY for being patient. This is in my opinion the best fish and chip shop in Ely and it always has been good quality ever since I was a kid. Giving it a solid 9/10 and the only improvement I could see is in what variety of potato is being used (I’m fussy and do like a little brown sweetness from a chip….Sagitta being one for this) But trust me, you really won’t be disappointed with how they taste as they are. 14/10/2024 Regular Cod £7.20 Regular chips £2.80 Curry sauce (homemade) £1.30

Hands down our favourite chip shop in Ely. The people at Alan Fish Bar are very friendly and service is extremely efficient. The fish and chips is among some of the best we have ever had away from the sea

By far the best fish and chips shop in Ely. The chips are soft and fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Their battered sausage has a delicious flavour, as does their standard chip shop fish cake. I'm looking forward to a return visit to buy their Plaice.

Very nice food, freshly cooked to perfection! The fish was amazing, very tasty, just the right amount of batter which was nice and crispy. The chips were awesome, a nice size and the price was pretty standard for fish and chips nowadays. Went and ate the by the river which is I ly a couple of minutes walk away...be warned, if you sit by the river at night you will probs ly get bit mlby mosquitos, like I did!

My first time here & I have speech issues so showed lady my order on phone..she was so sweet & understanding and was amazingly helpful. Then I took food home and it was amazing! The fish reminded me of old days when fish and chip shops in ‘70’s & 80’s gave healthy & quality food not just flavour soaked in fat like so many modern day fish & chip shops! So I highly recommend going and using this place! Quality & flavour & lovely staff..I’ll be back!😁

Treated myself to a large portion of chips and sat outside under the shade of a tree in the nearby Jubilee Gardens. Perfect. The chips were delicious and the gentleman who served me very polite and helpful. I can definitely recommend.

I wouldn't say I had the best chips, curry and unbattered sausage was nice. I appreciate the cook to order and saw how popular it is.

Have had good meals but the last was greasy wet batter ! Chips getting less and the constant demands for cash so They avoid taxes is getting tiring! Prices are very high for basic food! Having been a loyal long standing customer I will now look at other shops!

We often had food from here and was always impressed but unfortunately Saturday was disappointing, chips were nice but the large cod wasn't that large, it was dry and not much meat and the mushy pea portion (micro size ) so not impressed after a revisiting.

This is our favourite chippie in Ely. Always hits the spot and we have been here quite a few times. They do accept card nowadays which is great. Takeaways only here, and limited waiting space. I recommend getting the curry sauce.

Chips was amazing and soft and fluffy. I hate hard chips. Fish batter was very crispy but not the best king of crispy and there was more batter then fish lets just say that but taste wise amazing. Just wish there was less batter more fish. Curry sauce was very nice. They were very busy and they made it fresh but obviously that take time but other then time it was great.

Very friendly staff and good food.

The food is amazing - the fish is fresh and tender, the batter is crispy and delicious. Mushy peas are superb as well as the sausages. The owners are so friendly and food is cooked on the spot so it’s hot! Service is pretty fast so there’s not much of a wait although you might see long queues outside the shop - that’s because it does only takeaways and it’s GOOD! Definitely worth a try and I’m coming back again for sure.

Been to Ely many times for work and today was the 1st time I've managed to get in here for the lunchtime session. I certainly wasn't disappointed, the staff were great along with the food. Everything is cooked to order and very tasty, I shall definitely be back.

Recommend by a friend from work. Food is cook to order which means it's fresher! I don't mind waiting at all for my food as always friendly and polite and even have time to talk to you while you wait. I wouldn't go anywhere else in Ely now! Happy to sit by the river and enjoy a nice fresh fish and chips!! 10/10

Don't bother ordering online Made an order, was told it would be ready in 28 mins. Turned up on time, had to wait 29 mins to collect order people ordered after me in shop and got served. The girl says they can't prioritise and they don't say half hour wait. Well your website does. Not good service. Must to better 😡😡😡 The do take card payment although they say cash only, the have a card machine.

These people know how to run a chip shop. The food is made to order and it shows, well worth waiting just a couple of minutes for. The staff are really friendly and provide a fantastic service, they are clearly on the ball.

Genuinely, the best fish and chips I've had in the country. I lived in Cambridge 2007-9 and used to day-trip to Ely. We discovered Alan's by chance and it soon became a regular Saturday afternoon treat. The chips are light and fluffy with real flavour. The fish is creamy and steamed beautifully inside perfect batter. And always cooked fresh. I've travelled the length and breadth of Britain and can honestly say these were the best fish and chips I'd found anywhere. That was 16 years ago. We went back today for the first time, and I'm pleased to say they're still as good as ever! These guys need to enter national awards.

Mate and myself ordered fish and chips. I ordered large cod and large chips; friend bought large cod and regular chips. Got home, plated up, discovered we had two portions of large cod with regular chips. Why did I pay 90p more for absolutely nothing extra? I absolutely loathe and detest being ripped off by takeaways. We have used this pla(i)ce often and have always ordered regular chips, hence know what the usual regular portion size is. We won't be going back.

Without a doubt the best fish and chips I have ever had! Myself and my family had cod and chips each, all cooked perfectly. The food is made to order so is deliciously fresh and crispy. Staff were lovely and friendly. Can’t fault it!

The best fish and chip shop in Ely, in my opinion. Portion sizes are generous (a large chips goes between two nicely), and the prices are very reasonable. Everything is cooked to order, so you're never served something that's been sat around under a warming lamp. The batter is always crisp, and the chips are just right. Aside from the fish and chips, the battered sausages are also great, as are the mushy peas. They seem to prefer cash payment, but I believe card payment can be taken if needed.

Excellent! Had 2 regular cod and 1 regular chips plenty for 2 people, cooked to order could not have been better everything hot and fresh.

Never been so disgusted in my life. A regular chips is at least half the size of anywhere else in town. I ordered a cod roe and it is nothing but a greasy squashed ball. Literally the worst I have ever had

Always use this fish and chip shop, and the food is always good. They have a varied menu and the batter doesn't contain egg - which is great for my grandson who is alergic.

I ordered Cod & Chips, it was £8. A little pricey I thought, for a back street chip shop. I was mistaken, it was worth every penny. Turns out this place is punching WAY above its weight, with its fresh cooked fish and chips coming out better than most pubs and restaurants.

Meeting friends at 6:30..hadnt eaten all day and was starving..walked past alans fish bar and thought..5:50..I could order battered sausage and chips...as I was starving. Ordered and paid £5 At 6:25, was still stood outside waiting in the cold with no food..decided to forget it, go hungry walk on and not be late..could not be bothered to ask for refund...as late. Chips and a battered sausage...how hard could it be?

The staff very polite and welcoming I ordered as I’m vegetarian red onion cabbage vinegar, cucumber, tomato and burger sauce. Plus quarter pounder extra tomato sauce for my partner.We both said fresh, well cooked 100% recommended go as takeaway.

We got a regular size and a large size cod with regular fries and the sizes were quite generous, plenty of food for what you pay for. The flavour is quite good as well, would recommend if you are hungry or you need a quick snack

I love this place! Friendly, accommodating and delicious fish n chips. The click and collect is excellent, as is the easy to follow website. As a regular user, I would highly recommend Alan fish bar. Close to the train station too and easy to find.

The people are friendly. Fish is always nicely cooked and I'll forgive them listing mushy peas as a sauce on the menu. Hygiene seems good and I have never eaten anything from here that has been done in old or stale oil. My only quibble is that the chips are a bit floppy: maybe they need a higher temperature. Anyway, very good overall.

Best Cod and Chips I've had in years. The cod was a good size, with lovely crispy batter that wasn't too oily. The chips were outstanding - crispy and flavorsome. All were freshly cooked. Service was good too. We ate them by the river on a sunny evening. Heaven!

Fantastic fish and chips, freshly cooked and 10 minutes after collecting them, we sat in the car and they were still hot. They were very tasty!

The burger meals we ordered didn't have enough chips and they missed the drinks for the meals. It's probably because the guy servicing us was more interested in chatting up the girl who was just sitting next to the window then providing us with what we ordered. Not how it use to be, bring back the previous guy and tell the current guy to get a room. Hungry and disappointed.

Eating from Alan's during the 2020/21 winter/spring I have found them to be super-reliable on quality of ingredients and freshness of food. All/any fish and chip take out relies on having been freshly made. and not letting it get cold. Alans has been the best in Ely from that perspective in my experience of the 2 or 3 others in the town. I have seen long lines here in the socially distanced world but you can always call (or so I have found) and they will make stuff to order/collect. Particularly impressed that the food is good right up to closing time.

I get that I visited in the middle of a lockdown, but a microwaved Pukka pie? the fish and chips we had were ok, but the pie was almost inedible, over microwaved and soggy pastry, thumbs down from me
