Great service, food and atmosphere...we will return 😍

We had a lovely meal with efficient service and top class food. The Colne Valley rump of lamb was excellent. The friendly atmosphere and cosy fire was all we needed.

The chef was very friendly, and our young waitress was lovely. The duck entree was great, and our dinner was very tasty, especially the sauces and vegetables. However, the fish was undercooked, and the pork was lukewarm.

Lucky to get a chance last minute cancellation on a busy Newmarket July Festival horse racing day. First class on all counts. A great family run local pub/restaurant. Dog friendly too. Highly recommended. You will not be disappointed....but do book! Great, warm and welcoming staff and decoration, Traditional country decor. Fab food. Enjoy!

Our first visit here. Blown away by the quality of the food and splendid service. Still very much an unpretentious ‘village pub’ which we loved. But the menu is beautifully planned, all the food is made with fresh, top quality ingredients and it was all absolutely delicious. A short but comprehensive wine list - they decanted the red wine without us asking, which was great - and friendly, efficient staff. Two specials, stunning fish and meat. Wicked puddings. Would recommend wholeheartedly.

No food is served on Saturdays despite food shown on their website, it’s no wonder the Morris Men don’t have this pub on their summer schedule

We had a lovely four course meal here on New Year’s Eve. The Red Lion is a lovely traditional pub restaurant with old fashioned values of friendly service and hospitality. The gastropub style food is lovely with many extra touches and generous portions. Highly recommended.

Fabulous food , nice surroundings.

Nice atmosphere and delicious food

We ate here a couple of days ago. We chose a starter from the blackboard special and this arrived prompt and was ok. The main course of tiger prawn, tomato with garlic and basil linguine was a let down. The pasta was well over cooked and the tomato sauce thick and tasteless. Not wanting to cause a fuss as we only had the table for one hour we informed the waitress when she cleared away the plates. Not a sorry or any comment came back to us when we paid the bill. Overall a bit of a let down.

Good tasty food in a relaxed atmosphere

We went to dinner yesterday, as a group of five. We called in the morning to make a reservation and we were told they were fully booked but they would check the bookings and call us back. We had a call back within 20 minutes and they had a table for us! Great! We arrived and were greeted by lovely staff and the drinks we ordered arrived promptly. We were spoilt for choice with the menu as it all looked delicious. One guest is celiac but the choice of food he could eat was vast, which is great to see! The food was absolutely incredible. Fresh, packed with flavour and beautifully presented. We could not fault a thing. Perfect in every aspect. If I could give more than five stars I would! Well done ‘The Red Lion’. We are local and will be back over and over again!

Excellent customer service and outstanding food. Excatly how a English country pud should be, fine service whilst maintaining that warm welcome expected from a British pub.

We had dinner on a Friday night. The food was beautiful, staff friendly and the restaurant is nicely decorated. The food was a bit too slow to come out for my liking, but most tables were occupied and obviously we have no idea how many staff were in the kitchen that night. We will return, as the food was really very nice and we both polished our plates.

Can’t recommend this lovely country pub/restaurant enough. Owner chef Dean always delivers on quality and the service is friendly and attentive. The menu is varied and something for everyone. Slightly more expensive then some, but you get what you pay for …. good food/service and pleasant setting. Pity not open Sundays and Mondays, but they need to recharge 😉. Best to book to avoid disappointment.

Excellent and cheerful staff but food ok and no vegeterian options until we asked about one. Food overpriced and the wine, £7.50 per glass for a average red was over the top. Decor was charming and lovely setting and perhaps they have a captive clientele but it wouldn't tempt us back.

So great to be back at The Red Lion, delicious meal. Prawn cocktails followed by Turbot with a Lobster Bernaise sauce, yum yum! Thanks Kim & Dean.

This is no actually a pub. They have gone for the restaurant side that is an average sort of please.

One friday night we went for a family meal,as there was quite alot of us we had pre ordered. Starters were £8.85 Main from £18.95 for risotto,to £27.95 for beef medalions. Staff were lovely and very helpful,decor very nice. I have given it a 3 based on The portion sizes and didnt think its value for money. We did have a complaint about one of the meals and chef kindley cooked another meal for us which was nice. At the end of the day this is our opinion only and you may go and love it and the prices and think it great value we didnt!.

Me and my partner went here for dinner on Saturday and the food was amazing! First time we have been here before and will definitely be returning, hoping to book for my partners birthday! Was too full for a desert so will hopefully try these next time.

-5. I'm prompted to write my first ever review on TripAdvisor after visiting this dreadful pub tonight. My family were treated in a hostile manner by the woman serving as we had our 8 year old daughter and whippet with us. She decided immediately not to serve us because my daughter was under age, with the excuse that she thought they were fully booked. We told her we were willing to eat outside on their picnic tables in their car park, if there was a problem, then she promptly dissappeared. She came back to tell us that all tables were fully booked including the picnic tables...LOL! There were two couples at two tables in their pub/restaurant, or whatever they want to call themselves. A very disappointing end to a pleasant weeks stay in Suffolk & Cambridge, where we've met nothing, but lovely people. This pub deserves to be out of business with this attitude... I'd give them a -5 if possible.

Great food, the steaks were especially good ...great quality meat and cooked to perfection. The chef interacted nicely with the diners and seemed to really care that people were enjoying the food, and the other staff were great too. The pub itself is nice ...more restaurant than pub though.

Food and floral displays excellent. Car parking access through 0arade of benches which provided a safe spot for an enjoyable outside drink accompanied by my furry friend. Going inside to eat food excellent but due to being part of a group and despite preordering (menu differed from the available board menu which was cheaper and also available to group tables) service was slow and majority of staff not that welcoming

We decided to dine here after reading the reviews but you could probably get the same quality for food at any country pub. The food was nice but not as fresh as it could have been and especially at the prices we paid were expecting a bit more for our money. One of the staff also had quite a noticeable stain on their shirt and was creased which doesn’t look good for the reputation that this pub has. Clean establishment otherwise, can’t fault that.

Had a number of great meals here. The staff are friendly and very helpful. The food is very good with a big list of specials. Everything I’ve had to eat here has been spot on. The place is nice but not over the top, the prices are good for what you get. I highly recommend this restaurant.

How have we never visited this place before! The food was delicious, staff were lovely nothing was to much trouble and we can’t wait to return.....

Lovely evening meal in the cosy bar area.Food was well cooked, nicely presented and very tasty. Clean plates all round!Staff were smiling and attentive so all in all a lovely evening.For a pub it's prices are slightly on the high side but to go just for a drink would be rather nice too. Doesn't open for lunch.

A big pub in Newmarket, it sells food and has outside seating, staff are nice and friendly, child friendly also and does some good bargain meals, oh and you can get a good selection of drinks also

Following such a great meal a few weeks ago, we decided to go back with a different friend to see what she thought.

Only one tap for bitter. No choices of ales. Great cider though and staff friendly. Beer garden at back. It has a restaurant which was fully booked. So obviously popular.

Myself and my wife ate out at the Red Lion Cheveley on fri night ! And I have to say it was one of the best meals we have had for a long time! Friendly,good ambience, and the food delicious! The curried lamb shank was awesome, as was the rest of the meal! Thankyou to all the staff for a very pleasant evening!

We ate here with family who live nearby, and it was truely one of the best meals we have ever had... I chose from the chalkboard entrees - a divine lobster and langoustine ravioli , followed by steamed mussels in an amazing cream sauce. They brought a variety of simple, steamed vegetables to the table, and my husband, who generally avoids anything green, took seconds and then thirds of the broccoli.

If you are going to have only one pub in a village, it might as well be a great one. Excellent selection of dishes (Steaks, Lamb,Fish,Seafood) and lots of options on the beer front, both Ales and Lagers.

The food is probably fine. The welcome I got wasn't. There were no tables available - all booked. Fair enough but when i asked where else I could get a meal locally I got a shrug. I'd just walked 16 miles so wasn't relishing a night without food. Google found the The Old Plough at Ashley who readily agreed to hold a table for me and provided a taxi number. Proper pub with excellent beer and food and they welcomed me as if I was a local. So if you're in the area try The Old Plough - 5 minutes by car and 15 walking (via the Icknield Way) from the Red Lion which incidently only had one draught bitter on. It looks good though.

This was our first visit to The Red Lion and we were not disappointed.

Unfortunately for me, it’s been a month or two since I’ve been to the Red Lion at Cheveley. We went Tuesday evening and had, as always a superb evening. I had a ribeye steak that was to die for. I’ve had a lot of steak in my time, in some pretty fancy restaurants however, this was as good as I’ve had !!! It’s a shame for the time being, that the wonderful Sunday lunch here is no longer, as the pub is now closed on Sundays. But make no mistake this is by far the best food around this area by miles, thanks To Kim and Dean and the wonderful helpful staff.

Great quality food and excellent service. Friendly staff who went out of their way to accommodate us. Cosy feeling. Highly recommend a visit.

La comida es de primera. El vino es delicioso. El servicio es excelente. La ubicación es preciosa y convenientemente cerca de Newmarket. Recomiendo encarecidamente el bistec, no puedo evitar que casi cada vez! Es por lo tanto caro porque es para ocasiones especiales, pero los precios no reflejan la calidad.

Stayed in Cheveley on a recent business trip to the area, as we have two westies we phoned ahead to check that dogs would be welcome at the pub, no problem! On the hottest evening of the year so far we were given a nice table in the bar near an open window. The dogs settled quietly under the table. We ordered our meals from the enticing menu of home cooked dishes. The food was exceptional, cooked and presented beautifully. Very good selection of wines available. The staff were friendly and attentive but not intrusive. A truly five star experience, will return.

Nuestra experiencia fue tan terrible que sentí la necesidad de escribir una crítica (nuestra primera reseña! ). Después de un buen comienzo, recibimos nuestro plato con un huésped con la ternera Wellington. El filete de ternera Wellington (bistec) estaba seco, insípido y bastante gris. Al borrar los platos y preguntando si todo estaba bien? Los huéspedes destacó la forma en que la carne no era como se esperaba. Después de poseer un restaurante en el pasado y soy un habitual de cenar fuera el huésped estaba bien informado acerca de cómo la carne debería haber sido. La propietaria, quien fue el responsable de la recepción de la operación de la casa, se convirtió en extremadamente defensivo, así que el huésped propuso que quizás era mejor si él hablaba al Chef sobre él en su lugar. El dueño entonces dijo: "no creo que es una buena idea si usted habla con el Chef sobre este" y pasó a decir "bueno, si no te gusta, no volvemos" seguido diciendo que la mesa uno de los otros clientes (que no se había quejado) "fueron groseros cuando pidió su bebida".

High end local pub within a handful of miles of Newmarket. Superb service and offerings.

I would highly recommend this for Sunday lunch, this is the second time we've been and the food was delicious on both occasions. Service was good and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Superb food! warm welcome, excellent service in an upmarket pub atmosphere. We ate as a group of four and all of us were delighted at the quality and attention to detail.

Hadn't been to the Red Lion for a while, due to House move, but it is still one of our favourite places to eat, Dean is a great chef and Kim is a great host !

Opposit the fab Norfolk House B&B, so if you want a great weekend away this is a good village. Pub lovely, nice fire burning, very friendly staff food always good or excellent.

As usual, Another fist class Sunday lunch with the family. Without doubt the best around this area by a country mile. The roast Chicken and beef are to die for, and this week was one of the nicest we have had at this great restaurant. Booking a must as this is obviously a very popular venue.

I booked the Red Lion as my husband and I can not find a decent place to eat in Newmarket, so it is with trepidation that I chose the Red Lion. I was pleased with the menu I saw on their web site. We are locals and I was bringing my brother in law and his wife who live in Ipswich and one of them is a vegan. I, unfortunately, didn't really look into what the vegan options were and just noticed on the web site that there was a vegetarian option so thought that would suffice. When it was mentioned that one of the people eating was a vegan, the chef came out and spoke to her, it could have been an awkward situation but the chef was very respectful to her requirements and had a long chat with her. The food for all of us was excellent and all the waiting staff were very cheerful and polite. We eat out a lot and I would say that this is one of our top meals and places to eat. A very big thank you to the chef and all the staff at the Red Lion!

Have recently spent two nights in Suffolk staying at Norfolk House B&B close by the Red Lion. We had booked to eat here on our first evening and the food was so good and the menu varied so we came back again the following night. Totally recommend the Steak and Ale pie, which both my wife and I chose and is delicious. Asparagus and pea risotto is also well worth a try. If you want to try lovely food, served by friendly staff in a traditional village pub then give the Red Lion a try.

This country pub serves fantastic food from starters through to sweets. The fillet steak is, in my opinion the best pub steak you will eat. They have a good range of wines both red and white.The restaurant is not that big so you will need to book as it is always busy....always a good sign

My wife and i visited on a friday night. The welcome was good and the food choice very pleasing. The food was of a high quality, i had the steak and ale pie, my only slight criticism would be the somewhat limited vegetable choice. Just a few carrots, french beans and broccoli. It would have been improved by a little more invention and creativity rather than this very safe choice. This being said i would eat here again without hesitation.

From the nearby B&B we visited the Red Lion for diner. Nice menu with many choices. The presentation of the dishes are beautifull. We had a great evening. The staf was very friendly and the restaurant looks very nice.

Myself my partner and friends came here last night for dinner and what a brilliant dinner it was. The pub itself looks very nice and feels very homely. The staff are great and the food is just brilliant! Great job guys as a manger at a busy pub myself I know what it takes for the level of service and quality of food that we received. Fantastic will be back very soon!

Our first impression of this smart free house and gastro pub was the the friendly welcome and line up of some excellent real ales. It's tastefully furnished and is set in the heart of Cheveley village.We booked and early Sunday lunch and were pleasantly surprised by the variety of choice. The fish were excellent and accompanied by plenty of vegetables.

It's a little expensive but as the saying goes you get what you pay for we all had a different roast came with lots of potatoes then the veg came a real good choice and loads of it too only had one course as for me was enough good food have been a few times now highly recommend this pub and advise you book as very popular

My other half and I visited the Red Lion after a day at Newmarket races. Whilst the food is not cheap, it wasn't extortionate, and it is certainly value for money given how delicious the food was. Would recommend to anyone staying around Newmarket.

I have visited The Red Lion on numerous occasions and each time it gets better and better! The food is delicious and the atmosphere is great, perfect for a family meal, catchup with friends or dinner date! They make the most amazing homemade desserts and you will not be let down with the food! One of the best places I have eaten! The Sunday roasts are brilliant too!

Stayed in Cheveley for a Newmarket races weekend and the Red Lion was a walk away. Wasn't sure what to expect but the Red Lion is a well above your average pub food, the menu wasquality, a varied wine list and the staff both efficient and friendly. A great pub restaurant at reasonable prices

Unbelievable to think this was on my door step, well within 10 miles, and had overlooked for the first couple of years... However now that we have found this is always our first choice not only for ourselves but when we have visitors too as the food and service is second to none. In addition to the food the bar, although small, is fantastic. Great choice of real ale, usually 3 as well as larger they have an unbelievable selection of gin... Last count 27!If you are thinking about going stop thinking and go, you will not regret everything is top notch with friendly service and a smile.

I rang and booked a table for eight of us and our dogs ! A group of us were meeting from various counties for a dog walk them get together. I explained this to Kim on booking and she couldn't have been more helpful .On arrival we had a lovely welcome and fab table all,laid out ready for us in the bar.I have to say we could not have wanted for a better evening and the staff at the Red Lion really looked after us well . The service and food was amazing, our drinks orders were promptly taken and checks made throughout the meal for re orders .The food selection here is excellent , both menu n specials board to choose from.Several of us had the plaice n chips, blooming delicious , so fresh n crispy .Everyone was really happy with their meals . Deserts were delicious too.The dogs were all reasonably well behaved, and I hooe we didn't disturb any other diners . Thank you for a really lovely evening , hopefully you will let us come again as we all had a great time .Great pub, fab staff and the most delicious food, you can't go wrong really .

We had been booked into The Lion by another local landlady who said she would only send her clients here as the food was really great. We were not disappointed. The staff were very attentive and the food was perfectly cooked ( I like my beef rare) and very tasty. We will definitely be returning as this was one of the best Restaurant Sunday Lunches I have had in a long time! This is fabulous to have such a gem of a place near to us.

WE came for a meal for two during race week. The restaurant was busy, but the welcome was good and the service good. The food was excellent, very much gastro pub rather than just pub grub. Piping hot and delicious.We enjoyed it so much we booked a table for later in the week.

Visited The Red Lion for Mother's Day lunch. As expected, it was perfect from start to finish. Food and service were excellent. A wide variety of alcoholic and soft drinks also available. The three course Sunday lunch was of excellent value.

My parents live nearby so come here when we visit them, most recently for Mother's Day lunch. It's a lovely restaurant area with a nice atmosphere. Wide range of drinks and good beers on tap. Always good quality food, prepared and cooked excellently, my steak and ale pie was just perfect today!

Met friends there last night. Delicious! My twice cooked cheese soufflé was to die for. The duck for mains afterwards was perfectly cooked and serverd by great staff. All washed down with very good wine. Best place to eat and drink.

Worst food I have had. No flavour over cooked. What else can I say. You ask for a rating. You do not have a minus. How derogatory if I know what a tart tatin is clearly the person (chef) does not. Overlooked veg in a piece of pastry with no sauce. You are then offered a pepper corn sauce with no peppercorns in which tastes like mushroom soup. VILE

Decor uninspiring but general ambience good and food truly exceptional. Menu offered a variety of mains, starters and desserts. my scallops were cooked to perfection and served with a creamy rissotto. Pear tarte tatin was sensational.

A really great pub with excellent food and delightful staff. We were staying nearby and our host recommended it. We had a really warm welcome and had a drink at the bar before going to our table. My husband had the scallops wrapped in parma ham as a first course and he loved it. The staff could not have been more charming we will definitely return there on our visit to Newmarket next year.

We were booked in to the Norfolk House Bed and Breakfast for two nights for a 60th birthday celebration weekend early in August. As we could walk from the B&B I booked dinner for both nights at The Red Lion. A bit of a risk as it was on behalf of three couples; and none of us had been there before.The walk to the pub was very pleasant; a very nice village, the pub is lovely and the staff wonderful. We had a vegetarian and a ‘plain food’ champion as part of the group and we selected various options from the menu; all was high quality and well received. We had fantastic service, good food and two fabulous evenings at the establishment.

Visited several times at the weekend after attending the Newmarket races.Had great Sunday roast and wished had time to try the lovely menu. Made to feel welcome by Dean and Kim and also some of the locals.

Been to this restaurant twice now - 1 Sunday lunch and 1 Saturday evening. Both times exceeded our expectations. Have eaten in many local restaurants, many of which are very good but this beats them all hands down!! The welcome is friendly, the staff are attentive. The food is delicious and all cooked to perfection. When ordering meat (duck, lamb and beef) we were asked how we liked it cooked and they all arrived exactly as requested. It is not a cheap meal but it is priced according to the quality you are getting. This is now our favourite restaurant in the area and we will definitely be returning soon.

We have eaten at a The Red Lion since Kim and Dean opened it and have always had the most delicious food. Meat is beautifully cooked, with tasty sauces, fish is superb and the vegetables are lovely as they come without butter and are crunchy and perfectly cooked. My sister had an excellent fish curry recently, and my scallops were exceptional. Beautifully cooked and well presented, thankfully not over decorated, every dish is perfect. Great chips and home made chocolates too. Dean is always trying out new things and obviously loves cooking. I wish we could go every night. Wines are good and the staff are very good and are know what they are doing, unlike in most restaurants today! We love eating there!
