As a familiar and regular visitor to other Chestnut group pubs and spending a fair few £s on drinks and meals over the years, we decided to visit The Three Blackbirds this afternoon for the first time. We did the dog walk, as suggested on the website, with the intention of finishing at this dog friendly pub with a few drinks and food from the bar menu, which the website states is available all day from 12pm. On entering the bar at 3pm we asked for the bar menu, which the bar server was about to provide, when ‘KITCHEN CLOSED!!’ was yelled our way and pointed towards a packet of crisps on the bar. We looked at the other patrons tucking into bar menu food, so turned on our heels and left. A disappointing first impression, that means we won’t be returning. I visit these type of pubs and eateries knowing you pay ‘top dollar’ for food and drinks and I normally leave with a smile, but not today. A warm welcome it was not.

Long overdue review. Breakfast was fabulous each morning and they were so accommodating of our just turned one years old Labrador who decided to wrap his lead around the table legs and tip it over smashing all our drinks everywhere. We were embarrassed for only a few minutes as the stuff were so kind, even wrapping up our leftover steak bone for the bubba to enjoy later (which he certainly did). All the food was delicious and the staff couldn’t have done enough. Room also lovely, we went for the top one and couldn’t have been happier. We will certainly be back. Our dog loved it and so did we! Thank you!

Such a wonderful place for a night away. Service in the bar was impeccable, the food lovely though it would have been nice to have a few alternatives for vegetarians and the room was absolutely gorgeous. Little touches like welcome biscuits and waters. Would highly recommend for a relaxing overnight stay if you just want to get away.

Three Blackbirds is always our go to pub when meeting friends and as this was to meet up with a friend who moved to Australia and has now moved back the UK this was our first meeting in 30 years. The atmosphere is always good, busy but not too loud. Warm and welcoming, the staff friendly and considerate (we didn't get round to looking at the menu as quickly as we might have done!). Food excellent, as always and a good choice. Only problem was that we forgot to pick up the receipt so cannot add the points to our loyalty card. Thank you.

This is the second time I’ve visited and been disappointed. The last time was on New Year’s Eve, when my boyfriend and I popped in for lunch. I’ll start with the positives... It was very quiet and we sat in the bar area, which is lovely. The lady who served us was delightful and friendly (a vast improvement on the service I had on my previous visit when the server seemed totally careless about our feedback regarding the overly microwaved or oven heated sticky toffee pudding - more on that later). However, the food was not what I expected. I had ordered the sea bream dish as a main but what arrived was nothing less than measly - it was more of a starter than a main and the smallest piece of fish I’d ever seen with a VERY small amount of potato and a smattering of veg. This was priced at £16. Whilst tasty, it certainly wasn’t worth that. More like £8. My boyfriend ordered roast beef, which, again, was the smallest portion and hardly any veg. Seriously, if the Blackbirds are going to compete with other local gastro pubs nearby, they really need to up their game food wise. This leads me onto my previous visit a couple of months earlier. I popped in for lunch mid week with a friend. On this occasion, the food was good. However, when I pointed out to the waiter that the sticky toffee pudding was tough and we’d had to use a knife to cut through it, he said he would tell the chef. We never heard anything after that until our bill came. I mentioned it again to the manger on the day and his response with a shrug of the shoulders, “oh, we told the chef and he said it was fine!” I have since been in touch with the manager about this sad lack of customer service.

Our Son and his partner are new to the area so we had no prior recommendations on what to expect. We were seated within a minute of arrival and the service was fantastic. Our server who took the time to go through the specialist steak menu. All locally sourced meat. For drinks my husband couldn’t decide which local beer/ lager to try so a taster of all 3 was prepared for him so he could make his choice. The food was also great, well prepared and well presented with a good range to cater for all. The rump steak was delicious and my apple & blackberry crumble dessert flavored with a hint of rosemary was divine. Prices were reasonable, service was exceptional and food delicious. Since I last visited The Blackbirds Inn it has been taken over by The Chestnut Group. Met for birthday celebration with 5 others.most of meals were ok but I asked for the chicken pie and was told it was top crust which I would not normally have as I prefer a full pie.i was told by waiter how superb this was so I took a chance.it came with a mash and a few veg scattered about.when I tipped the dish onto the plate I searched for some lumps of chicken in vain because it seemed like a soggy mess.as the gravy was very brown and tasted like beef I assumed it might be beef pie by mistake.as I am unable to eat beef I asked waiter if this was really chicken.he looked at and said no it's not I will get you another one.i was then told it was a chicken and ham pie and what I saw was ham.they brought me out another one which was stone cold.this one was returned and we tried a third time.by this time my friends were finished and ready for sweet.it was piping hot this time but it was still hunt the chicken,I guess it had disinter grated in with the soggy mess.to give them their due they did apologise and did not charge for this dish.i could not eat all of it anyway because of an overdose of salt they put in it. My friend next to me had rump steak and asked for well done.yes it was well done on the top but the middle was still bloody.not being one to complain he ate it as it was. On the good side the other meals were ok,but when you pay £29 for a piece of fillet steak you expect it to be fairly good!! A shame our celebration was spoiled by one bad apple in the barrel so to speak,as the staff were very good and the place had a certain ambience.as we live just down the road I was hoping this might become a regular venue for us but perhaps that won't be the case(unless they get some decent chicken pies) perhaps we will give it one more try and avoid the pies.

It had all the makings of a nice meal - steak and ale pie was good but the steak was tough and gristly - apparently it was pre cooked in water bath and then grilled and then they sneaked in a charge for what we thought was a freebie as it was offered as main course would be a long time- and then they argued and belittled us. Service was okay. Food was mediocre. Camembert wasn't melted in the middle, sent back, took ages, the server (I think the manager) was fussy when we tried to cancel the 2nd try at it, so it delayed everyone else at the table. The 2nd try at the camembert wasn't melted in the middle either. Steak was nice. Pizza was of low quality, not what I was expecting for the price, more like a frozen pizza from Tesco. Burger was dry, had no seasoning and had basically no cheese on it even though we had added it as extra. Salad on the side was super salty which was weird. When paying, there was issues with the connection with the card machine, one person paid at the table then the rest of the table at the bar. They messed up the bill at the bar with the remaining people paying for what had already been paid for. Wouldn't go back, really disappointed.

We booked the blackbird for a small hen do much and the staff, Daniel and alex, were absolutely amazing. They let us in early when they were actually closed to decorate the table and helped us make the hen lunch special, took photos for us and made it feel special. The food was lovely. Three of us had the goats cheese salad and it was really different and colourful and very tasty. Even after we short changed them (complete accident after some terrible maths calculations) they were Still lovely. Looking forward to going back again.

Booked table as supposed to be very popular.Meal nothing to write home about other than expensive and why would a supposed quality restaurant use the same gravy for the beef and pork dish.

We were in the area visiting our daughter, son-in-law and grandson and they had said they really wanted to try this place and even though they lived nearby for three years they had yet to visit. We made reservations for an early dinner due to having a 3 year old with us for dinner. When we arrived they were expecting us, most people were opting to be outside but with the little one we sat inside. Our meal was great. I had flatbread which was very good, all the other entrees were very good also. We had the Sticky Toffee Pudding for dessert and my son-in-law who claims to be an aficionado for that dessert pronounced them tied for the best he ever had. I guess that says it all!

We really enjoyed our Sunday lunch at the Blackbirds - it was the first time we had visited. The service was excellent offering additional gravy with our delicious roast beef. We also loved the sticky toffee pudding and our dog was welcomed with a couple of doggy biscuits so everyone was happy. We would definitely return.

No ! In Victor Meldrew’s parlance, I don’t Believe it. Four of us went to lunch at The Blackbirds a couple of weeks ago. Firstly , the quality and sensitivity of the renovations of this lovely old Inn, one could not help but notice. From the newly restored thatch, outside, to a cosy comfortable honest restore on the inside, completed by the warm and friendly welcome by the competent staff. Nothing contrived here just good and simple honesty. We started with a bottle of a lovely Provence Rose, ‘ Mimi ‘ which suits Summer exactly and then onto our lunch. From a charcuterie board then onto pan fried crispy skin ( and it was) sea bass served with an unusual and delicious salsa, and that was me done but I did manage and ice cream which topped of my feeling of wellbeing. So what do I not ‘Believe’ ? Maybe the recent poor reviews of some who by the number of their reviews have not been out much .

Booked for 7:45, finally shown our table at 8:15. We walked passed empty tables, that remained empty all evening? Not a great start. Starter of Crispy Squid lacked two elements, crispness and squid! Never had squid cut into tiny slithers like thin elastic bands, had to hunt around lettuce to find it.The over cooked tiny burger that followed was equally mean, one slice of tomato, one lettuce leaf and mediocre. Cheese board was again, frugal slithers of cheese, and time had even been taken to shave a celery stick and present two transparent ribbons. Why bother with celery at all? Over priced. Silly portions and some of it over cooked. This lovely country pub is offering a reasonable range of simple bar food, and could be a great, sadly it is not.

We went for an evening meal and had a drink on arrival, I asked for Campari and soda. The lady serving at the bar couldn't find the Campari and a gentleman who worked there pointed out the substitute to her. I was then told it wasn't Campari but something similar. It cost £7.50 for a small measure so from one no doubt cheaper substitute bottle The Blackbirds will take £150.00! Amazing! My husband had fish and chips, he asked what the fish was , coley. I had chicken which was nice but the new potatoes were not cooked, they were replaced but by more uncooked new potatoes. We were given desserts free of charge but felt that it was a disappointing and over-rated meal . There is mention in some reviews of a Michelin starred chef cooking at the Blackbirds but it must have been his day off! We won't be rushing back especially after the recent newspaper article.

Why would anyone want to pay good money to eat at the Blackbirds? This a zero atmosphere pub with food. Very mediocre food I. E. Pies, bangers and mash, expensive steaks with a £2 charge for a sauce. Bill for 4 people £200 plus. I can't believe it's in the same group that owns The Packhorse!!!!

Excellent fish goujons starter, but the steak & alepie was a very runny beef casserole in a dish with a puff pastry lid on, not a pie. Personally I don't like dogs in a restaurant however well behaved they are.

Shall I start with the exceptional service or the exquisite food? Such is the entirety of my satisfaction with both - it is simply impossible to prioritise. Staff~ Jamie is a sensational asset to a flourishing establishment. Hard to fault and impeccable in his service, attitude and attention. With well trained staff and a friendly, smiling yet discreet presence throughout, Jamie is clearly a rising star in the Chestnut Group and sets the bar high. Daniel and co seem confident and willing, and tremendous in their work: clearly Jamie's efforts are transferable.Behind the scenes the food was clearly prepared by Michelin starred professionalism without the pretension of such unnecessary branding. My beef was as close to perfect as can be, my delight calming, quieting- I was in an unparalleled culinary utopia. And as I reflect on my chocolate brownie, and sticky toffee pudding (yes- I enjoyed two puddings- why not? I live once only and I live for establishments like this), I allow a soft, satisfied smile to reach across my face... eyeing my diary... yes. I'm already planning my return to heaven on earth... thank you Blackbirds- what a wonderful pie you are!

Lovely food, excellent service and pleasant surroundings. It seemed fairly family orientated although we visited around 5pm so that's probably why there were quite a few children around. We Were just after the 5pm cut off for the sunday roast but the chef was very accommodating I had a burger and partner had a roast and we shared a cheese cake after - I can recommend them all - excellent.

This place has been refurbished by new local chain owner. Used to be Three Blackbirds but now just Blackbrids. It's a lovely run out of Newmarket to a small village and the pub dates back to the 1600s, new thatch roof and looking smart. Food is not adventurous but is well cooked and nicely served in a relaxed atmosphere. Some outside space for eating / drinking in the front garden.

So we've been to the pub a few times now at various times of the day and have received a warm welcome whether having a pit stop with the dogs (with the addition of a peroni and 2 ham hocks) or stopping for a meal. This evening was salt and spicy squid and burger and chips for me and fish goujons and bangers and mash for the hubby. All was washed down with a nice bottle of Beaujolais and good coffee. As with our previous visits (Sunday lunch, quick drink, dinner with friends) couldn't fault a thing. Now I won't pretend this is the cheapest place to eat but the menu caters for most pockets, is tasty and is delivered with a friendly smile in a stylish country pub atmosphere. Daniel and James get a special mention for making a fuss of our slightly overexcited laboradors who now drag us in when we pass by. Definitely worth a visit, book ahead to avoid disappointment .

The pub has a nice feel and is very pretty with its traditional features. The staff were attentive and welcoming. On the whole we had a lovely meal out in the front garden. Only disappointment was that the steak was ordered rare and it was definitely well done with no red in it... that said my partner said that it was good quality and succulent anyway. Will return...
