This pub has new owners and we thought we’d try the food there as the menu looked good. The night we went was pie night, so we both ordered beef in stout pies . Great chips and well cooked veggies, but what a fantastic pie, bursting with slow cooked beef in a great pastry. Looking forward to the next meal here.

Popped in for Sunday lunch as heard about the new owners. Decided to opt for the roast pork. Didn't have to wait long for it to arrive. Very generous portions and the pork was lovely. To be fair my friend and I were both pretty full but opted for the plum crumble as dessert. It was lovely! Very competitively priced too. The staff were friendly and gave us a tour of what they'd done in the renovation of the pub. Can highly recommend the Black Horse Inn for a wonderful Sunday lunch!

Don't waste your money dirty rooms with spiders, brekkie was a rip-off and just really bad like cooked in really old grease. Sausages rehashed and precooked and burnt to cinder, scrambled egg just tasteless and not even any cereals available. It was a very bad place, the worst budget hotel ever stayed in. Shame on brewery as this place completely needs to be renovated and with decent chef would be a gold mind as the location is beautiful and so closed to Newmarket. Been completely run into the ground. Sad really. 😔

Stayed overnight for race meet at Newmarket. Rooms smelt damp, mould on wall and peeling paint in bathroom. Dirty in corners, furniture stained. Bed was clean and comfy, the only endearing feature. Pub tired and scruffy, doesnt serve food. Staff didnt want to be there. Lovely location in a pretty village, but needs a complete makeover to realise its potential. Avoid, at least until new owners have done something with it!

The carpark is too small for the amount of vehicles likely to use it. The bar menu is very basic, the shower cubicle sprayed from the side of the shower unit very heavily in my face and there is no working TV, Internet, phone signal even though they state they have all amenities. Or did they mean in the next village along... Very poor in my opinion.

Absolutely dreadful, would not recommend if you are looking for a place to stay, stayed a total of 3 nights already paid for breakfast and didn't get it 2 of the 3 days. Breakfast was suppose to be at 8.30 which is already late for a B&B especially for workers staying away, even though in the leaflet in your room it says 7am. The second day one of the workers arrived and told us the landlady won't be there till gone 9am so me and my work colleague had told just head to work. And again on the 3rd morning no where to be seen by 8.35 so had to leave because would be gone 9am by the time we get food. Their excuse was traffic but that's absurd you should leave earlier then to get there for 8.15 so food can start at 8.30. Also no evening food with an array of 'reasons' about why. First day they Said they don't do food on Mondays which is fair, 2nd day apparently the chef had an ear infection so again no food and the 3rd night he then got covid apparently I'd like to say we were going to stay the week before this but didn't as they said no food all week because chef was 'ill'. Thirdly don't get your hopes up for WiFi, although there is WiFi In the pub it does not reach your room so be prepared to use a lot of data. Overall a very bad time here will not be returning and would recommend to anyone who doesn't literally want a bed for the night.

Staying away with work and i could not have asked for a better place to stay. Being a single female I didn't want to stay in central Cambridge, having to eat by myself. Alice and Martin made me feel like part of the family and welcomed me warmly. They have not long taken over the pub but have found their feet very quickly. The pub was warm and inviting with a handful of village locals. Food was homely and filled the spot on a dark, wet evening. I will be back.

We had a great meal of fish and chips, the batter was golden and crispy, delightful. We stayed in the pub all night, played darts followed by a game of cards .Best night out in a pub for ages, very friendly with great hosts . My partner and I never stopped laughing all night. What a comedy of errors i don't know where to start. The only nice thing i have to say, and, in their defence, they are new tenants. When i arrived i was given a room that the barman couldn't find a key for, so after i had showered they changed me to another room. Day two no sign of the land lady so no breakfast, a local lady did make me breakfast which was great and very kind of her to bring it over to me. When i returned from work the pub closed and other guests were turning up who decided to look elsewhere (very sensible). No evening meal. Day three i turned up for breakfast at the pre-determined time pub locked up and guess what no breakfast. When i returned that evening i waited for ages for an evening meal, guess what nothing. The room was never cleaned coffee and milk not replenished; the list goes on. If you're on a strict no food diet and you're not bothered about cleanliness a great place to stay otherwise avoid like the plague.

After a visit to Anglesey Abbey we needed something to eat but the restaurant there was packed so four of us decided to look for somewhere nearby to eat instead. We were lucky to find the Black Horse just a few minutes' drive away. Two of us chose to eat from the two courses for £10 menu which we found to be enjoyable and very good value. One of the group has very specific needs and the landlord went out of his way to provide exactly what she requested although it was not on the menu - and within the same price. The fourth in the party chose lamb shanks from the main menu and was well pleased with his meal. We would definitely eat there again if we were in the area.

This pub has had an unfortunate history of late. None of the past publicans has been able to create an atmosphere and the food has been poor or dreadful. The new husband and wife team present with a friendly optimism that may change things. A helpful and interested couple who bring years of experience of running pubs. The food is reasonable 'pub grub' and the Sunday lunches are value for money. i have from time to time dropped into this pub on my travels and I notice that the atmosphere has lifted- there is laughter to be heard rather than the awkward silence that there used to be. I see darts are back, a sign of community involvement ( always a good sign in a village pub) There is accommodation at the pub but this has always been basic- an improvement would be welcome. I certainly will be calling in when I can and will follow the potential improvement of this place, Nothing much can be done about the internal layout but there are definite signs of an improvement in the atmaosphere.

The Black Horse is a stereotypical English country pub on the village green and it's not a bad one. The service is pleasant enough and there's a menu with lots of honest pub fare. My tuna was a tad overdone but the dish was rescued by a super complement of fresh salad and braised veg. It's not fine dining or gastro fare but a perfectly good place at lunchtime on a summer's day or as a part of an evening activity on the green.

Worst Sunday lunch ever. We were greeted by pleasant bar lady and immediately sat to table. Very limited lunch menu on chalk board. We ordered pork and chicken. Dinner arrived very quickly my 3 pieces of approximately 2.5cm of pork 4 very small roast potatoes and cold vegetables. My husband chicken was more or less the same he however had 5 roast potatoes again stone cold vegetables. We pointed this out to our server who just stared at us and then went to kitchen. She came back and said she would heat our dinner up in microwave I requested fresh hot veg however that would then mean they would be short of veg for remaining diners. Dinner taken away heated and was to a fair standard albeit Yorkshire’s now shrivelled by microwave. Several people turned away as there would not be enough roast dinners. It became clear why when other diners arrived friends of owner their plates arrived full and plentiful hello owner all diners need to be treated equally. Will not ever return to this place. Owners need to train in customer service and satisfaction.

I had an interesting sounding Japanese lager (but brewed and bottled in Bedford as it turned out!) and we ordered the Sunday roast. It took a bit of time to arrive and was pretty average with a low light of a completely inedible slice of beef. Reading other reviews, it seems I'm not alone so I couldn't recommend it. We were asked if we wanted another meal but we declined as we were in a hurry. The rice was tasteless and we felt it was a complete waste of money. The Pie was a touch better but the meat inside the pie was burnt. The barman who took the chilli away did not appear to be in the least concerned. I used to stay at this pub on a regular basis over 10 years ago and it was the first choice to try when visiting the area again, thankfully I wasn't disappointed. My wife and I and another married couple stayed in the converted stables with their natty new names, Kings and Magdalene respectively. The welcome was courteous and efficient, the room was fine, clean and tidy and plenty big enough with a spacious comfy bed. The shower was a bit tight to get into but that's as much my bulk as well as the narrow entry but something to be mindful of.We used this as a base for our 2 day visit to the area and would highly recommend it as such or for shorter or longer stays. The pub itself is a friendly place and has a nice atmosphere.Breakfasts were nicely cooked and tea, coffee and toast was plentiful if wanted, the evening meals were superb, well cooked and presented. We would happily use the Black Horse again if in the area.

We visited the Black Horse Inn with young children for a traditional Sunday lunch. There are lots of good points about the pub, great pub ambience, super friendly and helpful staff, and a good range of draft beers on tap. Most of our party had the roast Sunday lunch, which though mid priced, was actually plain average in quality. The meat (beef & turkey slices) and side dishes were served on platters so we could help ourselves; that would have been fine had the quality been better. The beef was chewy and not tasty, and the turkey limp and insipid. Vegetables not great either, soft soggy roast potatoes and over cooked vegetables. Overall the main course was OK, but not at all memorable. I suspect we may have done better by ordering other dishes from the menu, rather than the traditional roast.Desserts were good. The restaurant is very child friendly and good at catering for children, most everything was available in 'child size' at sensible prices.Overall value was average, we have had far better roast dinners at other pub/restaurants for the same price (£9.95). There were no problems with the desserts which were priced at £5.95.

What more could you want from an English pub than a fine plate of Newmarket sausages, mash and gravy all washed down with a pint of a local golden ale. Yum!

Looks good from outside but old fashioned pub food which has lost its way. Not at all adventurous and little atmosphere at lunchtime. Quirky place.

Our thanks to the Black Horse for serving us the perfect lunch, we dined in the conservatory and were warmly greeted by a young smart looking waiter who gave us menus and took drink orders. The Diirectors And Proper Job beers went down nicely following a bike ride through many charming villages, it was handy that the black horse had bicycle stands. We hope to visit again soon.

If you want a decent meal, at good prices, this is the place to come. Sunday roast looked fabulous and is certainly a meal that is for sharing- 1 platter, 2 plates.Food was excellently presented, on hot plates and the taste was perfect. Came here with relatives and it didn't disappoint- drinks were reasonably priced. Service was very very good and prompt. Atmosphere was relaxed and you could easily spend longer here than you realise because the staff don't push you out the door the moment you have finished. Will be back !

Called in for lunch having been touring the area. Very impressed with the friendly, attentive service and the fact that our dogs were allowed in the bar area. Food was good quality and reasonably priced. Would certainly visit again.

We enjoyed the warm welcome, and the friendly and helpful service we received. Food (a Sunday roast) was homely, fresh and served on hot plates (yeah). How I hate getting tepid food but not on this occasion! Décor on plain side but clean and airy. Highly recommend on strength of today's ad hoc visit.

Found this pub to be a little expensive food wise, whilst it was very good it did seem to be pricey at £60 for 3 one course meals and 3 drinks (2 non alcohol)Service was good

Visited for Sunday lunch with friends. We found the service to be excellent with friendly and attentive staff. Three of us ordered the roast meat platter. The alarm bells should have rung when we saw just how big the three Yorkshire puddings were (especially as the meats were pork and lamb neither of which is traditionally accompanied by Yorkshire pudding). The meat was very tasty but the amount of meat was appallingly little for three people - probably just enough for two. As this is clearly what the pub thinks is adequate (there were, after all, three oversize Yorkshires so there was no confusion about the number of people to be fed) there was little point in complaining at the time. One of the party had the meat pie and that was fine in terms of quality and quantity. So eating there could be a satisfying experience although having been left feeling short changed I'm not sure that I would bother!

We eat at least once a week at the Black Horse, mainly Sundays for the roasts. We meet friends here, enjoy a drink and usually end up eating.

We stopped here on our cycle back to Wicken Fen from Anglesey Abbey. The menu had a good selection, there was a few things for kids but no specific kids menu. The friendly service was brilliant and the food was very tasty. Well recommended, would definitely go back when we are next at Anglesey Abbey (Which is fairly often)

This used to be a good local Pub/Restaurant, but since new landlord things are decidedly less good. Service quite good if you get the right waitress. Main course mediocre, but the dessert was exceeding poor. Eaton Mess with tinned strawberries and soggy cream - has to be the worst Eaton Mess I've ever had. New decor is showing signs of wear only after a few months, was hoping for so much more after the new landlord redecorated. Hopefully things will improve.

We dined at your Inn for the first time on Saturday evening. We found the staff very pleasant & polite. We found the décor pleasant & the cleanliness very good.My only criticism would be that I ordered the pie & mash which was very nice but it could really do with a compliment of perhaps carrots & peas or some kind of vegetable for the price of £11.95.Perhaps you could consider this for the future. We hope to revisit sometime. Thought we would give this place another chance, sadly it definitely is not up to usual standard. Bar was empty of customers, We arrived at 1.30. to an empty pub that alone should have prepared us for what followed.. Quality of food was poor quality pub fare. Roast potatoes of which we had 2 each were burned completely gravy cold veg overcooked slush oh and cauliflower cheese with ? milk instead of cheese. I only wish people would rate this truthfully as most people who read reviews prefer an accurate account of venues. Whilst reading reviews I observed how new owner responds only to positive reviews and has not addressed any of the poor reviews, that alone tells us customers more than enough about his business ethos!

I wish they would get on Food Hub and Deliveroo. Always polite friendly female staff, and the food is delicious, I love their large cod chunks, and their homemade fishcake is delicious, chips are always fluffy on the inside, and their battered Sausage has nice flavour. Edited: Portion sizes are smaller now, as is the size of their homemade fishcake.

Well, I’d give zero stars if I could. For what you get, you’re better off getting a microwave tv dinner which is so disappointing as we have been before and it was amazing!!! The menu is very dated, which I can see is part of the yesteryear charm, but the standard of ingredients and cooking is really poor for the price you pay. The starters had gristle and bone in them to an unreasonable level. The gravy with the beef was watery, the meat was chewy and the fish was overcooked to be too dry. I’m sure no one but forethought and planning are to blame, but the roast meat was served with boiled new potatoes as roast potatoes had run out by 7pm on a weekend. The waiter was a cheerful boy, but showed little flare for decent service, and took almost full plates back to the kitchen. No one asked how our meal was, and when we tried to speak to someone, they were all in the kitchen. I had hoped this was a random series of unfortunate events on a night without usual staff, but it appears a new normal having looked at other reviews. Such a shame for a historically lovely establishment with a beautiful location and lovely setting.
