Took friends to this lovely, friendly Pub for Sunday lunch yesterday, after being seated and given menu’s we were delighted to discover they now do a Sunday carvery, really cannot praise this enough, food was exceptional, our friends were really impressed and can’t wait to go again, see you soon 😊

Sunday carvery was awful - not enough food for the table - beef was undercooked - people left waiting for more food to be cooked - veg not cooked, no gravy - will not return - manager was more concerned about making coffee than sorting our issues - waitresses were brilliant and they were apologising for the obvious lack of leadership as they felt embarrassed

Went today for afternoon tea with 7 adults and 7 children . The staff at the anchor are very accommodating. They done little afternoon teas for the children . Every time we needed another drink it came straight away . There was even extra food if we could manage it . Scones was delicious still warm . Couldn’t ask for better service and food was lovely . Would highly recommend afternoon tea .

Excellent service at this very friendly hotel. A wonderful source of information and a diplomatic representative from Spain on the night they deprived England of the Cup. Little Downham is a lovely village just two miles from Ely with a quaint, if infrequent, bus service. There is a Nisa store for those wishing to make their own pack up and a number of footpaths including a quite pleasant walk into Ely.

Excellent pub in the centre if the village, and great food. We were taking our dog for a walk along the Hereward Way from Ely to Welney and stopped off for lunch. The owner was fantastic and even brought over a bowl of dog water. The food was really good, particularly the waffle chips and Tacos. You could sit in the main pub or there was a good choice of covered seating outback.

Stayed here one night whilst visiting friends in Ely , it was convenient for the location and the room was clean and comfortable with a nice big shower . However the continental breakfast was disappointing. Most hotels when paying £130 a night offer a full English . Toast was brown bread ! No option and the thinnest bread ever and cold Fruit salad very disappointed, not fresh fruit . Warm croissants and cereals . Tea and coffee offered once and not offered top ups. Not a satisfying breakfast to start the day . Think 4 rooms were booked for the Same Occasion all guests left unsatisfied with the breakfast

Visited for a function, great food, service impeccable and quality outstanding, a guest on our table food choice was taken by someone else which resulted in the guest being rude to staff when it was not there fault, he should of spoken to the other guest addressing the situation, not taking it out on staff which clearly was not their mistake ! I believe the function organiser has written a glowing review directly to the establishment thanking them for the service and food received, which I agree wholeheartedly was a lovely night enjoyed by all except one.

When our wedding reception started the table layout was superb and layed excellent the members of staff we had behind the bar were outstanding and there hospitality was incredible from start to finish we can't remember there names . After the event had finished at 22.00pm all the food was boxed for us and the cake too . We’ve just had a lovely 3 night stay in this family run hotel. It is spotlessly clean, we made a last minute booking and had the basic double room. It fitted perfectly for our needs with plenty drawer space and a small hanging space. The en-suite shower room was lovely with a great shower. The food was great and the staff very friendly and helpful. . Only 3 miles from the beautiful city of Ely with its beautiful cathedral we would highly recommend the Anchor Hotel and would like to come back.

Terrible meal which did not meet the advertised menu, poorly trained staff and general lack of Christmas atmosphere. Management not remotely interested and I noted they deleted negative comments from other disgruntled Christmas Day diners on their facebook page which were replaced by glowing reviews which mirror the one review reviews on here. Unimpressed and a disappointing waste of good money.

Disappointing return on mothers day since we had a good evening on valentine's. We had to preorder the food from a set menu which is different from the menu you see on the day which is disappointing as there are more choices now. The starter took 45 mins to arrive and another 45 minutes for the mains to arrive, while another larger table that arrived later got their mains first. When the mains did arrive(4 roast) dinners all of them were undercooked, portion sizes were disappointing compared to what was served at valentine's. The bill was also incorrect as they tried to charge an extra three 3 course meal on us. Definitely felt like our table were forgotten about. Staff were very nice and apologetic (otherwise this would have been a one star review), but did admit that they were overbooked and overwhelmed, so management needs to get their act together.

Called in for lunch in the courtyard garden after dog walk with our two large dogs. Very hot sunny day. Friendly staff provided water for dogs, shade for all of us and a comfortable seating area which is being updated. Had a good lunch although felt the chunky chips were slightly too chunky and could have done with a little more cooking. On the whole they did very well with efficient and friendly staff and good food. We were booked to go back the following evening for our anniversary as staying in the village. Seated in the conservatory which was very warm and found the surroundings very utilitarian and like a canteen. Music was provided by a radio station so listened to adverts, not very relaxing or comfortable. The staff were very friendly and efficient although we had to wait a very long time for the food, although probably due to low staff for the current situation so understand. Food was of a good standard though. Had the spicy prawns and steaks, flavoursome and well cooked. Wouldn't go back as surroundings not that pleasant unfortunately, perhaps the other part of the restaurant is better?

We went last Sunday 23rd February lunchtime as a party of 7. The service was excellent, but the food was disappointing. The meat was cut so thin, like you buy off a deli counter for sandwiches & there wasn't much of it. The Yorkshire puddings & roast potatoes tasted as though they'd been cooked hours & kept warm, but the vegetables were very nice. The desserts were also very nice, although the crumble was served with the smallest amount of custard I've seen. I'm sorry to say I cannot recommend Sunday lunch.

Awful value for money, we weren’t offered water or another drink, the meal was not festive at all (no crackers or decorations). The food was minimal and we left hungry. Visited to have Mothers Day Lunch as a family of 8, and from arrival to finish we were treated to excellent service throughout by the staff, sadly during our lunch a guest arriving for lunch on an adjoining table before even sitting down collapsed and fainted, the Staff were excellent and showed attentive care throughout, and I can only say how they looked after the person and ensured he received their utmost attention,Whilst we had a suffered slight delay understandably through no fault of the Anchor, the staff apologized for delay in our meal arriving which was out of their control, it was pleasing to see the gentleman return to his family and join them for a meal, I can only say well done to the Anchor and how well they looked after him. Sadly it was very disappointing that on an adjoining table they had no consideration for the event which had taken place.they were rude and offensive towards the staff and very inconsiderate. It was sad that such a small few spoil it for the rest of us. Our meal was excellent and my family thoroughly enjoyed the quality of our meal the Braised beef was very tasty, my family complemented how good the meal was throughout. I went to the Anchor for Sunday Lunch today with my family. The restaurant is very pleasant and the staff are very friendly.I had soup to start and it was very tasty but it was so small I thought it was a joke. I kept expecting them to bring out the rest of it and apologise for pulling my leg. When the waitress took my plate I told her it was the smallest bowl of soup I had ever had, but there was no offer of a refill. We all had Sunday Roast for main and were given the choice of beef or pork or a bit of both. My wife asked for both and I asked for pork. When it came we both had the same stingy portion of pork but she had also had some beef and I just had an empty space on my plate. There were plenty of tasty vegetables and loads of potatoes, which was a good thing as I would have been pretty hungry otherwise. The gravy was a bit watery and I think It's a bit of a disgrace if a chef can't make tasty gravy. But all in in it's a nice friendly place and apart from feeling cheated about the size of my soup and roast pork it was a decent Sunday lunch. Having said that I think I'll leave it a while before going back.

Booked for a family meal out, eight of us. Were given a table in an alcove next to the main restaurant, quite a nice touch. Pleasant, well-decorated surroundings. Were given two menus to choose from, general and a la carte - a little confusing, given that you could pick and choose between them according to what took your fancy. But good selection of dishes, delicious, well-presented food, decent-sized portions and reasonable prices for what was on offer.Polite and friendly, if not over-attentive service. Had to wait for one of our main dishes, which the manager - without any pressure or even a question from us - apologised profusely for and said he would remove from the bill - if only all maitre d's were quite so concerned about their levels of service?Overall, a very enjoyable night out. There was ample off road parking in their car park which you don't always find with a rural B&B. The room offered us all the amenities that were required tea/coffee facilities, TV and most important free Wifi !. We had an evening meal in the Restaurant which is located at the back which we found more formal than the bar area . Food was presented well and our waitress was helpful with local information. In the morning we went to Ely for the Christmas Gift Fair which I can highly recommend. Lots of stallholders selling Christmas delights. We had intended on driving into Ely but on recommendation by a member of staff a taxi was booked for us and we were thankful of the advice as it was rather busy! If you do get a chance to visit the Cathedral at Christmas make sure you see the magnificent Christmas Tree. Once back at The Anchor we opted for a light bar meal as we were both tired. The bar is located at the front and has the atmosphere of a typical friendly village pub. We slept very well and enjoyed tucking into our English Breakfast this morning. Will definitely stay again when visiting Ely.

A lot different since it's been remodelled. Good menu, something for everybody, and good prices too!

The Anchor has become poor service, bland dishes, "not what it used to be". visited in September and was a nice place to be then! The dessert we were served was like ashes in my mouth…Ultimately, if there was one thing that seemed to be amiss, it was that no one, and I mean no one at the Anchor appeared to be enjoying themselves. the customers, the floor staff and certainly no one at my table, definitely not up to the standard i will not be dining here again!

Went with family for an evening meal, the food was lovely and couldn't be faulted. However the restaurant lacked atmosphere and our waitress appeared disinterested bordering on rude. We went through to the bar after the meal and although only just 9pm they were setting up tables/bar for breakfast as if they were getting ready to close, so we left! All a bit random really....

We enjoyed an outstanding and interesting weekday lunch! The restaurant/hotel is on the main street - easy to pass by without realising what you would be missing - there is a car park at the back. We were comfortably seated in the bar area, whose four or five tables were occupied, but we saw a much larger restaurant that is doubtless used at busier times.Ely eating seemed split between expensive tiny tiny portions of interesting food, and huge portions of honest dullish nourishment - the Anchor was well worth the drive out for the sensible portions of really excellent and original food. Starters of pidgeon salad with honey dressing, and sweet and sour prawn rolls on gooseberry chutney were absolutely delicious followed by haddock roulade with asparagus and steak with sauce. Really good chips too!Service was friendly and accommodating, the décor lacks much character but was clean and modern. We paid about £70.00 for 2 courses for three people

I have been to the Anchor on one previous occassion where the meal was very good. This time we took my step-daughter who can be a bit fussy. Despite it being a Friday evening and the car park packed the restaurant was empty. This does not help the atmosphere but it meant we got extra attention. I ordered a steak with a stilton sauce, it was cooked to perfection and the onion rings were the best I had tasted. I had the right amount of food although felt I had room for a pudding. The puddings I felt were not as nice as I expected and I would not bother again or maybe I would go for a safer choice. I chose the poached fruit, which was unexpectedly cold and tasteless. I have never had this before but did not expect it to be cold but maybe it should be. My partner had ice cream and it was fine, no frills just ice cream. Service due to the fact there were no other customers was potentially a little over attentive with various members of staff checking and rechecking throughout the meal. I would recommend you try the Anchor and we would return. It is a clean restaurant with hotel and pub also attached, the bar meals are probably well worth a try.

We visited on a Friday evening with my brother-in-law, and we all opted for the 10oz gammon, it was delicious, very succulent, it was served with chips, mushroom, tomato and freshly made onion rings (they were the best onion rings I have ever tasted). The service was excellent. We sat in the restaurant at the rear of the building, which is a lovely light and airy room. You also have the option to eat in the bar.We enjoyed our meals so much we decided to book for the Sunday lunch time. There was an option of 2 roast meats, Beef or Chicken, and there were also some options from the main menu. We all opted for the Beef, which was delicious, there were 3 roast potatoes, and a roast piece of parsnip on the plate with the beef. The seasonal vegetables were served separately, as were new potatoes and gravy. It was an excellent meal.We all opted for a dessert, my husband and brother-in-law had the Sticky Toffee Pudding, which they both enjoyed, and I had the Crumble and Custard, it was Apple and Strawberry, and was delicious. The restaurant was not too busy on either visit, which considering the excellent food and service was a surprise.

Firstly it was important that there was disabled access to the restaurant and when I called to make a reservation the girl on the end of the phone could not have been more polite and helpful. Access was fine, no problem with a well thought out toilet for the disabled customer. It was striking on entry how spotlessly clean everywhere was, well set out restaurant in a conservatory with oil lit candles on each table. I can imagine on a chilly winter afternoon this would be enchanting. We were treated in a friendly manner and could chose where we sat, service was efficient, unobtrusive and unhurried. I had roast beef and Mum had chicken sizzler in BBQ sauce. I could not do justice to the food as the serving was very generous, I enjoyed it very much, tasty beef, loads of vegetables, roast and new potatoes, large Yorkshire pudding and delicious gravey. The chicken sizzler certainly sizzled and was good too. Desserts were strawberry cream brûlée and sticky toffee pudding, beautifully presented and delicious. I would definitely recommend a visit and will return. Thank you.

We had been highly recommended to eat here and we went on a Tuesday when it was their special steak night. The staff were very efficient and attentive but the food was just average and nothing special. The pub and dining room were very modern and lacked atmosphere. We had visited another local pub (The Lamb and Flag in Welney) the night before and had enjoyed our meal there much more and so we would return there rather than return to The Anchor.

Had a 3 course meal at this restaurant. Had pate with a herb scone, it was wonderful. Then I had roast beef with all the trimmings. The beef was cooked absolutely perfectly, but the highlight of the meal for me was the strawberry creme brulee, which I have had in a number of top London restaurants, but the Anchor wins hands down. Absolutely amazing. I gave some to my 9 month old daughter, who had seconds and thirds. Lovely restaurant, friendly staff. We will definitely be back......oh yes of course we will, we are booked again for next week!

This pub has new owners and we thought we’d try the food there as the menu looked good. The night we went was pie night, so we both ordered beef in stout pies . Great chips and well cooked veggies, but what a fantastic pie, bursting with slow cooked beef in a great pastry. Looking forward to the next meal here.

CASH ONLY PLACE. Everything super nice, except that the back room was lacking fresh air, so the smell and air felt really heavy. Apart from that, the service was prompt and the portion massive for the money. If you are two adults, easily can get one big cod and chips and share.
