Called in for lunch in the courtyard garden after dog walk with our two large dogs. Very hot sunny day. Friendly staff provided water for dogs, shade for all of us and a comfortable seating area which is being updated. Had a good lunch although felt the chunky chips were slightly too chunky and could have done with a little more cooking. On the whole they did very well with efficient and friendly staff and good food. We were booked to go back the following evening for our anniversary as staying in the village. Seated in the conservatory which was very warm and found the surroundings very utilitarian and like a canteen. Music was provided by a radio station so listened to adverts, not very relaxing or comfortable. The staff were very friendly and efficient although we had to wait a very long time for the food, although probably due to low staff for the current situation so understand. Food was of a good standard though. Had the spicy prawns and steaks, flavoursome and well cooked. Wouldn't go back as surroundings not that pleasant unfortunately, perhaps the other part of the restaurant is better?

We went last Sunday 23rd February lunchtime as a party of 7. The service was excellent, but the food was disappointing. The meat was cut so thin, like you buy off a deli counter for sandwiches & there wasn't much of it. The Yorkshire puddings & roast potatoes tasted as though they'd been cooked hours & kept warm, but the vegetables were very nice. The desserts were also very nice, although the crumble was served with the smallest amount of custard I've seen. I'm sorry to say I cannot recommend Sunday lunch.

We went for an evening meal, the food was lovely- home cooked and good sized portions ( too much for me, but my partner was delighted) and served on warm plates - yay! Attention of the team there was fantastic, nothing was too much despite them also having a large party in the conservatory restaurant to see to as well. Choice of Ale's behind the bar was very good too.

Took some visiting friends here for dinner and so glad we did as all of us enjoyed a very good meal. My steak was cooked perfectly and very tender. The portions were ample but we managed to squeeze in desserts and I’m glad we did as all were home made and not brought in ready made. The skill of the chef shone through in all dishes and the customer service and atmosphere made for a very pleasant evening.

We were really looking forward to our Christmas meal at Little Downham Anchor but were extremely disappointed. Awful value for money, we weren’t offered water or another drink, the meal was not festive at all (no crackers or decorations). The food was minimal and we left hungry. We were not even offered gravy for with our dinner or a coffee post dinner. £118 for a terrible experience.

Visited to have Mothers Day Lunch as a family of 8, and from arrival to finish we were treated to excellent service throughout by the staff, sadly during our lunch a guest arriving for lunch on an adjoining table before even sitting down collapsed and fainted, the Staff were excellent and showed attentive care throughout, and I can only say how they looked after the person and ensured he received their utmost attention,Whilst we had a suffered slight delay understandably through no fault of the Anchor, the staff apologized for delay in our meal arriving which was out of their control, it was pleasing to see the gentleman return to his family and join them for a meal, I can only say well done to the Anchor and how well they looked after him. Sadly it was very disappointing that on an adjoining table they had no consideration for the event which had taken place.they were rude and offensive towards the staff and very inconsiderate. It was sad that such a small few spoil it for the rest of us. Our meal was excellent and my family thoroughly enjoyed the quality of our meal the Braised beef was very tasty, my family complemented how good the meal was throughout. Thanks for looking after us for mothers day we will be back, and it was so nice that the staff remained professional whilst being treated by an inconsiderate few. THANK YOU THE ANCHOR you are to be commended on your attentive attitude and service during such a dilemma.

I went to the Anchor for Sunday Lunch today with my family. The restaurant is very pleasant and the staff are very friendly.I had soup to start and it was very tasty but it was so small I thought it was a joke. I kept expecting them to bring out the rest of it and apologise for pulling my leg. When the waitress took my plate I told her it was the smallest bowl of soup I had ever had, but there was no offer of a refill. We all had Sunday Roast for main and were given the choice of beef or pork or a bit of both. My wife asked for both and I asked for pork. When it came we both had the same stingy portion of pork but she had also had some beef and I just had an empty space on my plate. There were plenty of tasty vegetables and loads of potatoes, which was a good thing as I would have been pretty hungry otherwise. The gravy was a bit watery and I think It's a bit of a disgrace if a chef can't make tasty gravy. But all in in it's a nice friendly place and apart from feeling cheated about the size of my soup and roast pork it was a decent Sunday lunch. Having said that I think I'll leave it a while before going back.

Pleasant, well-decorated surroundings. Were given two menus to choose from, general and a la carte - a little confusing, given that you could pick and choose between them according to what took your fancy. But good selection of dishes, delicious, well-presented food, decent-sized portions and reasonable prices for what was on offer.Polite and friendly, if not over-attentive service. Had to wait for one of our main dishes, which the manager - without any pressure or even a question from us - apologised profusely for and said he would remove from the bill - if only all maitre d's were quite so concerned about their levels of service?Overall, a very enjoyable night out. Just returned from a relaxing weekend at The Anchor in Little Downham. We had tickets for the Ely Cathedral Christmas Fair so we decided to stay overnight locally and opted for The Anchor in Little Downham just outside of Ely. There was ample off road parking in their car park which you don't always find with a rural B&B. The room offered us all the amenities that were required tea/coffee facilities, TV and most important free Wifi !. We had an evening meal in the Restaurant which is located at the back which we found more formal than the bar area . Food was presented well and our waitress was helpful with local information. In the morning we went to Ely for the Christmas Gift Fair which I can highly recommend. Lots of stallholders selling Christmas delights. We had intended on driving into Ely but on recommendation by a member of staff a taxi was booked for us and we were thankful of the advice as it was rather busy! If you do get a chance to visit the Cathedral at Christmas make sure you see the magnificent Christmas Tree. Once back at The Anchor we opted for a light bar meal as we were both tired. The bar is located at the front and has the atmosphere of a typical friendly village pub. We slept very well and enjoyed tucking into our English Breakfast this morning. Will definitely stay again when visiting Ely.

We enjoyed an outstanding and interesting weekday lunch! The restaurant/hotel is on the main street - easy to pass by without realising what you would be missing - there is a car park at the back. We were comfortably seated in the bar area, whose four or five tables were occupied, but we saw a much larger restaurant that is doubtless used at busier times.Ely eating seemed split between expensive tiny tiny portions of interesting food, and huge portions of honest dullish nourishment - the Anchor was well worth the drive out for the sensible portions of really excellent and original food. Starters of pidgeon salad with honey dressing, and sweet and sour prawn rolls on gooseberry chutney were absolutely delicious followed by haddock roulade with asparagus and steak with sauce. Really good chips too!Service was friendly and accommodating, the décor lacks much character but was clean and modern. We paid about £70.00 for 2 courses for three people

I have been to the Anchor on one previous occassion where the meal was very good. This time we took my step-daughter who can be a bit fussy. Despite it being a Friday evening and the car park packed the restaurant was empty. This does not help the atmosphere but it meant we got extra attention. I ordered a steak with a stilton sauce, it was cooked to perfection and the onion rings were the best I had tasted. I had the right amount of food although felt I had room for a pudding. The puddings I felt were not as nice as I expected and I would not bother again or maybe I would go for a safer choice. I chose the poached fruit, which was unexpectedly cold and tasteless. I have never had this before but did not expect it to be cold but maybe it should be. My partner had ice cream and it was fine, no frills just ice cream. Service due to the fact there were no other customers was potentially a little over attentive with various members of staff checking and rechecking throughout the meal. I would recommend you try the Anchor and we would return. It is a clean restaurant with hotel and pub also attached, the bar meals are probably well worth a try.

The service was excellent. We sat in the restaurant at the rear of the building, which is a lovely light and airy room. You also have the option to eat in the bar.We enjoyed our meals so much we decided to book for the Sunday lunch time. There was an option of 2 roast meats, Beef or Chicken, and there were also some options from the main menu. We all opted for the Beef, which was delicious, there were 3 roast potatoes, and a roast piece of parsnip on the plate with the beef. The seasonal vegetables were served separately, as were new potatoes and gravy. It was an excellent meal.We all opted for a dessert, my husband and brother-in-law had the Sticky Toffee Pudding, which they both enjoyed, and I had the Crumble and Custard, it was Apple and Strawberry, and was delicious. The restaurant was not too busy on either visit, which considering the excellent food and service was a surprise.

Firstly it was important that there was disabled access to the restaurant and when I called to make a reservation the girl on the end of the phone could not have been more polite and helpful. Access was fine, no problem with a well thought out toilet for the disabled customer. It was striking on entry how spotlessly clean everywhere was, well set out restaurant in a conservatory with oil lit candles on each table. I can imagine on a chilly winter afternoon this would be enchanting. We were treated in a friendly manner and could chose where we sat, service was efficient, unobtrusive and unhurried. I had roast beef and Mum had chicken sizzler in BBQ sauce. I could not do justice to the food as the serving was very generous, I enjoyed it very much, tasty beef, loads of vegetables, roast and new potatoes, large Yorkshire pudding and delicious gravey. The chicken sizzler certainly sizzled and was good too. Desserts were strawberry cream brûlée and sticky toffee pudding, beautifully presented and delicious. I would definitely recommend a visit and will return. Thank you.

We had been highly recommended to eat here and we went on a Tuesday when it was their special steak night. The staff were very efficient and attentive but the food was just average and nothing special. The pub and dining room were very modern and lacked atmosphere. We had visited another local pub (The Lamb and Flag in Welney) the night before and had enjoyed our meal there much more and so we would return there rather than return to The Anchor.

Had a 3 course meal at this restaurant. Had pate with a herb scone, it was wonderful. Then I had roast beef with all the trimmings. The beef was cooked absolutely perfectly, but the highlight of the meal for me was the strawberry creme brulee, which I have had in a number of top London restaurants, but the Anchor wins hands down. Absolutely amazing. I gave some to my 9 month old daughter, who had seconds and thirds. Lovely restaurant, friendly staff. We will definitely be back......oh yes of course we will, we are booked again for next week!

We have now been to the Little Downham Anchor Restaurant for the past two Sundays. I was taken there for my birthday with my husband, father and 8 month old daughter. The whole place is spotlessly clean and we were welcomed with a friendly smile and pleasant conversation from the staff. We sat in the restaurant and there was a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. We ordered the Sunday roast which arrived with plenty of vegetables and the meat was lovely and tender. The waitresses made a real effort to ensure that we had everything we needed and also interacted with my daughter who rewarded them with plenty of smiles . We chose the Strawberry Creme Brulee for our dessert, one word to describe it, fantastic! There were pieces of Strawberry and it left us wanting more.We visited again yesterday for fathers day and received the same excellent service. We simply cannot find anything to complain about. Thank you and we will see you again very soon

Went back (3rd visit) for a nice meal in the bar, The waitress was very pleasant and helpful. Our meal arrived in next to no time and it was well cooked and nice and hot, portion size was so good, I had to struggle to eat my dessert, but I managed!I have recommended this place to many of my family and friends based on good food, good drinks and great staff. Thanks to all staff at the Anchor

Came in with family for a 8.15pm booking for 4, when being seated the waitress was just looking around going 'ummmm' and had obviously not actually reserved a table. After being seated we were asked to order drinks straight away without a chance to look at a menu and not all of our party were even seated. Both waitress' available didn't smile once and could not have sounded more monotone and bland. The whole experience felt rushed and they turned music off and began dimming the lights at about half 9 which we felt was our hint to leave. While paying our table was surrounded by people grabbing glasses and starting to clear the table up although we would've preferred to finish our drinks in peace. As we left I quickly went to the bathrooms and came out to find the doors locked and lights all off. The waitress noticed me looking confused and instructed me to walk all the way round the bar area rather than simply unlocking the door for me. Felt rushed and unwelcome the whole time, food was nice and a nice looking restaurant- although could have done with some heating.

Stayed for a couple of nights with "er indoors" and her parents (I know, a "holiday" with the in-laws is a contradiction in terms eh? :-) ). My father in law has various disabilities but he was made to feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble, even to the extent of changing rooms for the second night. Everything was very clean and tidy, the food was huge portions and well cooked; maybe a couple more "veggie options" would have been icing on cake. The staff all had time for a smile and a joke, and seemed to enjoy being there as well which is nice :-). Best bit was that a request for chocolate croissant for breakfast brought the sad news that not delivered today. No matter! A plain croissant and a pot of melted chocolate miraculously appeared instead :-). Now that's - initiative, fun, clever, and accommodating, all in one.......

Have not been in this establishment for many a year, having heard good things about it from friends and colleagues I took my wife there last night for a drink and a meal, we did not book, we just turned-up.We were greeted by the Bar Manager, who was very friendly and attentive, he served us our drinks and showed us to a table, a young lady (Lillie) came and took our order and served our food, she was very friendly and nothing was to much trouble for her.The food was excellent (gammon steak & steak & ale pie) and well presented, as I started my meal I wished I had chosen something different as the other waitress (Jess) took two plates containing the special rack-of-ribs to the adjoining table, well my jaw dropped and my mouth watered, it looked The Business and it was not a rack it was a whole rib-cage!!!!!Our whole experience at this pub/restaurant was Top Notch and we will be going back again in the near future, just so I can try the Rack-of-Ribs.Well done to all the staff, including the Chefs.

Arrived at restaurant to a warm welcome from the manager... it was my daughters first mothers day and she was made to feel very special we had my 6 week old grandaughter with us but didn't feel we were putting anyone out...We ordered from the mothers day set menu which had a good range of choice for everyone.... We had some requests as changes to one of the starter choices which was no problem for the chef...The beef and pork roast was excellent, plenty of tender meat and an excellent selection of potatoes and vegetables also cauliflower cheese, the gammon was massive and served with both pineapple and eggs....A good choice of puddings if you still have room after the large portions of starter and main!!The service was very attentive, very happy staff who aim to please!! Its a very reasonable price for the set menu...Each lady in our party was given a favour of chocolates as a mothers day gift a lovely touch. We will definitely go there again and have recommended them to our friends and work colleagues.

The Anchor was the exact opposite of all of those.Really helpful with booking; freshly prepared good food; good beers. Facilities were clean and well managed.Service was good and friendly - always a good sign when local people eat at a place! We will come again in the spring.

We visited for the first time on Sunday for a roast dinner (me and 3 friends). We had never been before but saw the good reviews and decided to give it a go. Firstly I'd like to say the staff were very attentive and extremely friendly. The large conservatory looked OK, if not a little tacky (we said it looked like a retirement home dining hall). The food was a bit disappointing to be honest, nothing to write home about. Nowhere near enough gravy, not even close!!! The pork was pretty average (reminded me of school dinners). Potatoes were good. We didn't get any sauces or condiments which was a bit strange. Surprised by all the 5 star reviews, although maybe the staff make up for the standard of food. I really wanted it to be good, but unfortunately It was pretty average.

First came here with my partner and my parents in July as we wanted to try some restaurants outside of Ely. It was a warm evening and the patio area is lovely to have a pre meal drink and a cigarette, if you wish. That night I chose to dine off of the pub menu, I ordered pate starter and the ribs, which I assumed would be a tender rack of ribs. My pate was mediocre and lacked any real flavour. When our main meals arrived my meal consisted of two large pork ribs, which wasn't what I was expecting. Admittedly I didn't read the menu correctly. They were quite tough and I didn't really enjoy my meal. I was quite full so didn't dive into the dessert menu.On my second visit to the anchor, I decided to dine off of the al a carte menu, which is obviously more expensive. I had the parfait this time and the burger and I enjoyed both. They were well cooked and nicely presented. I had a chocolate brownie dessert which nicely rounded off the meal. On both occasions the service was polite and attentive and I like the restaurant being separate from the bar and pub area. It is worth a visit, but I would recommend dining off of the a la carte menu.

I visited the Anchor with a large group 40+ people of which we all pre-ordered our meals. My meal was not the best I have had from The Anchor, which was slightly cold upon arrival. I ordered fish which I was looking forward to but this meal did not live up to my expectations. We had to wait an extremely long time for our starters and mains in a very busy restaurant.Previously I have visited The Anchor and have had very pleasuable locally sourced meals with smaller groups of friends, up to 4 people, with reasonable service. Some meals I feel are also slightly over priced.A very local pub in the center of Little Downham with a separate bar area (where food may also be eaten)

We were recommended the anchor by friends and were not disappointed. The Saturday night menu was very limited which bothered me greatly to start with but once the food arrived these concerns were swept away. The quality of the meals that arrived though was outstanding, i had steak my wife had duck both were amazing. The chips alone would have got five stars from me soooooo good! The staff were welcoming and friendly throughout, all in all an absolute joy..
