The Fish House Ely in East Cambridgeshire

It's apparent that only 'fish & chips' customers are truly welcome lesser orders seem to get forgotten......or arrive much later .... totally unexceptable. Not a one off happened on several occasions.

I m Şeff 30 years when they take fish in oil they should taken off oil , I bought fish 3 times always so greasy

The best fish I’ve ever tasted, it’s so white and chunky, the batter is thin and the chips taste delicious also and not greasy.

Very disapointed cod chips ,2 drinks a sausage £17, myself & friend visited fish House ely , it was very basic wood benches in back , busy, we find ely difficult place for good meal ,we actually fancied burger from farmers market ,but it was all Chinese Korean food pizza, Italian cafes ,we decided to go to bury st edmunds in future

First thing to mention is the cheerful and friendly staff, they were wonderful. The food was a good price, freshly cooked and tasty. I had the home made fishcake and it had a realky high fish content, delicious. Thoroughly recommend this place.

Great food. Clean and spotless. And staff are warm welcoming. And knows your oder. And service with a smile. And the large fish and chips is a good portion if you are really hungry. And the large fish and chips is really fresh and cooked to prefection. And the curry sauce is amazing sweet and spicy. You need to try and make home made musshie peas wicht is really taystie. Than in a tin. it is for the futcher sejestion.

Just brilliant - light and tasty. No grease and very satisfying - the sauces were a MUST have!

Tried the sample platter almost a year ago, taste OK. Tried again this time, price went up (understandable) but the quality was poor. Apart from the squid (which tasted like squid), others were quite bland, not unlike those frozen ones from supermarket (perhaps even worse than). Perhaps fish would be better as quite a few people ordered fish. But then, as far as freshness is concerned, it's hard to beat those from the fish&chips takeaway near the river. But the Fish House Ely has the advantage of being in a good location, could see that they are quite busy most of the time.

Please start opening on Sundays, I'm pregnant and your chips are the one and I'm sad because I can't come and get some because it's Sunday 😭😭

Nolonger a cheap meal out, but still worth my annual visit to this place as fish&chips as good as ever

I was dying for local fish & chips but when perusing the menu I spotted steak & kidney pie. The girl at the till asked me what I wanted so I gave her my order. Once ready she told me how much it was, so I pulled out my travel MasterCard to pay & was greeted with "cash only sir" & a tiny sliver of a notice at the bottom of the plastic shield was pointed to. So I put my card back in my pocket told her she'd have to put it back. I did say I had cash but not £s & left extremely disappointed that this business still works in the past.

Really good food and atmosphere

So I bought the fish and chips and didn’t get a chance to consume so brought it home, only to realise the fat that came out of fish was like hard wax, suggesting Hydrogenated vegetable oil has been used. The side effects are well known of hydrogenated fat. Such a shame, such a beautiful shop. Hope this was one off event and going forward something healthy like rapeseed oil is used for frying.

A great spot to either eat indoors or outdoors. Very tasty and hot and great with a chilled bottle of coke. The fish house is so conveniently located as it is right in the city square, perfect for having a break from enjoying the market stalls and all the shops.

Food was good reasonable value for money but cash only very awkward get with it please how many retail on yhe High Street shops don't take debit card

I wish they would get on Food Hub and Deliveroo. Always polite friendly female staff, and the food is delicious, I love their large cod chunks, and their homemade fishcake is delicious, chips are always fluffy on the inside, and their battered Sausage has the best flavour in Ely.

Usually chips from here are the best around, but they need to watch what they are serving up - today's portion was so dry & bitty and tasted bad, if you told me they were yesterday's left overs refried again I would believe it. I must have got the last scrapings out of the pan. Very disappointing (& at £3.50 a portion). They need to watch their quality as there are other chippies close by people can go to instead.

First time visiting and had the best fish for years, perfectly cooked, light golden crispy batter with perfect cod, fish was moist with being soggy, definitely going again

We ordered, sat down at a lovely table and our food arrived shortly after,freshly cooked. Delicious crisp fish,battered lightly and loads of chips. A great cup of tea to go with it. Would recommended absolutely. The prawns and squid were delist too. There is an outdoor courtyard at the rear to eat too.

We went to Ely's town on our way back to London. This was the first place recommended by Google and it didn't disappoint at all. Fast and professional customer service. The portion of fish and chips was very generous and the taste was fantastic. I would recommend their food without hesitation.

Stopped here by chance when we were visiting Ely, the queue out of the shop suggested it might by good food, and it didn't disappoint. Placed our order and were shown to a table with our food following just a few minutes later. Good value at £15 for 1 main meal, 1 portion of scraps and 2 drinks.

I had a fantastic meal here of fish, chips and mushy peas, all cooked to perfection. One of the best meals I've had from a chippy! The team were lovely and very professional with quick service. I would certainly recommend to anyone in Ely.

I have had fish and chips many times from this establishment and the quality over the last 3 years has been very good. the last 3 times i have ordered from here have been all bad experience's the chips have not been up to standard and the fish has been appalling . I will never use this so called chip shop again when they cant even produce a crispy fluffy chip .....This place has got sloppy...and i would if i was the owner be speaking to these servers. I will put off everyone from coming here ...... Very Disappointing......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of the best chippy suppers we've had in a while. Was visiting the Cathedral for an evening service and so glad we ate here afterwards. Fish was good quality and its batter was light & crisp. Peas, curry sauce and chips were spot on too. Well done guys!

Food poor with soggy batter and mushy cod. We ordered a platter and three of the things we had paid for were not in the bag when we got it back to our hotel. When I called to tell them, we were told that we would not get a refund, but could go back on Monday for the missing food. I explained we couldn't return on Monday as we were only visiting Ely, and the sweary man shouted over me, assuring me that there was no way I would be getting any refund. Also, this place is cash only so make sure you look after your receipt. The man sounded as if he was repeating a well worn routine, so do not leave until you have checked your order. There is another chip shop a few yards along the road, it might prove wise to go there instead.

The best fish and chips in Ely by far. Always busy, you should expect a wait since everything is cooked to order and in order. Unlike some places in town if you order haddock here you'll get haddock. Also the best mushy peas: they are a vegetable and not a watery sort of sauce. The atmosphere is bustley and buzzy and the young staff organised and efficient. Highly recommended.

Thoroughly enjoyed my fish and chips and the staff are friendly and welcoming. I'm new to the area, and happy to say this is my favourite chippy here so far. Large fish, isn't as large as others elsewhere, and no dandelion and burdock, but that's me being picky. I look forward to my next visit.

Not the best fish n chips but nearly OK

We had gone to get cash, as they don’t take cards. We then spotted Wildwood and chose to go there instead. After waiting 50 minutes with no food arriving, we left and went to the Fish House as we’d originally planned. Service amazing! We ate in and food arrived in less than five minutes. Fish was superb! Batter fluffy and crispy. Chips perfect. My wife had steak and kidney pie which was good. So impressed!

Tiny piece of fish once the batter taken away, scraps for chips and regular is a tiny portion.Brown salty water textured gravy. Very disappointed for £18.00. Wont be going again.

about 5 years since my last visit,but the fish & chips as good if not better than last time.The price may have gone up,but well worth the extra as a treat.Eating fish &chips sitting in the sun people watching does not get better

I ordered a cod, half portion of chips, curry sauce, 2 Heinz squeezme tartare source and 2 squeezme tomato ketchup on 27/7/2022. They charged 20p for each of the squeezme sauce. The receipt had "clerk 1 " and a number "278" printed on it. After waiting for some time outside the shop, a staff gave me what I ordered in a bag and took my receipt back. I had no car and had to walk about 30 minutes home. Then I realized that I had the cod, chips and curry source only. The shop omitted to give me all the squeezme sauce. It would not make sense to spend 1 hour to walk to the shop for the squeezme sauce and back home for my dinner. The fish and chips of the Fish House was really good. However, I was not really satisfied as I could not have the tartare sauce to go with the cod and ketchup with chips. On 28/7/2022 I went to the shop to tell them the omission and the shop asked me for the receipt. I was really not happy for that request because they took my receipt back for exchanging for what I ordered in a bag. Therefore I told the shop about my receipt being taken back by their staff in exchange for the food I ordered. Then I asked for a refund and a male staff just said no. I could not understand why the shop took my order, received my payment, omitted to give me the 4 squeezme sauce for me to enjoy my meal and refused to refund the cost I paid for such omitted items. At last the shop agreed to give me such omitted items I paid for a day before. All in all, their fish and chips were of first class and they could improve a lot in their service. Particularly, the shop could let their customers keep their receipts for record.

My wife and I visited The fish house today and to be honest it was some of the best fish and chips we have ever had, we ate in the chippie, good service and as I said some of the best, probably not the cheapest but then we all know every where the price has gone up, good sized portions and crispy chips, would certainly return and recommend.

Our first trip to the UK and The Fish House was recommended by a local on the train we took. Great choice! Large portions, friendly folks behind the counter. Had some issues ordering because they don't take credit cards or American cash but we found a travel agency that helped with the currency exchange.

Batter tasted odd good chips, very greasy and did not take a card, which is just bazaar in the post Covid world. Used to go here with my nan 30 years ago, I don't think I would go again. Very friendly lady on the till.

Ordered sausage and chips with salt and vinegar got to where we was sitting some distance away found so much salt on food it was more like would you like chips with your salt. Never again

Really nice chips , we visit once a week for chips , batter sausages and crispy bits , regular staff are very friendly , convenient location , fast service and looks clean , sometimes we sit in too , which is a very fast and efficient service .

Very disappointing. Waited 25 minutes for service while others got their meals almost immediately. No explanation given. Fish was OK but chips were not best quality considering cost of meal.

Just had regular cod and chips twice, very disappointing. My fish portion was greasy and dry fish lacking in quantity of fish too, not tasting freshly cooked. Chips moderately better.

Called into fish shop yesterday for a large cod and half chips, Also sausage and chips. Good job I was wearing glasses as the fish was small and cost a lot of money. Was the fish cod ???? nothing like cod to me but t was a white fish very dry one end . The sausage was not like before and more like a chipolata ,The chips portions was a lot smaller than before are they now counted ? Not greeted with a smile, think the elderly lady may have been eating lemons.

We stopped in this week on a day trip to Ely and it was one of the best fish and chip shops visited in a long time. Food was delicious, good prices and value, friendly service and a relaxing outdoor seating area at the back. The only thing to be aware of is that they only take cash.

Mediocre at best. Ordering, we felt like we were on a conveyor belt. The person serving seemed very pedantic: someone ahead of us ordered a small portion of chips, but the server insisted they say 'half'. We couldn't put our own salt and vinegar on from bottles: instead we were provided with sachets (free of charge). The sausages were good, with a light batter, but the chips were cold and small, more like crisps.

Too yummy ,on my weekend in ely I visited twice lol because the fish and chips are so very good. Best I have had. Bonus is the staff are all so friendly too.

Very kind and accommodating staff. Really friendly people helping you choose and sitting you down. Food was really nice and immediately available. The indoor space could benefit from some quiet music and less noise from the kitchen door, but was otherwise really nice.

Spent the morning in the rain watching football and needed something to warm up, decided on fish and chips and found this is the best we have ever had. Don't visit Ely and not stop to say hi! Pick up some chips, you won't regret it.

Very nice cod and chips, a little seating outside and some other benches nearby. Unusually they don't take plastic, Google Pay etc. The helpful server there did point out that there was a cash machine close by but that doesn't help if all you have with you is your phone.

Really good the best fish and chips I've had in a long time

Went inside to put my bag in one of the tables before ordering. Didn't see the sign as it was put below the eye level. Suddenly this cashier "man" came into the restaurant and ordered me to not sit down before i place my order. I was taken aback because he shouted at me. I was going to order but the attitude of this man was awful. I did then tell him not to treat a customer like that as i didn't see the sign. Then he had the audacity to say that i was shouting at him! Well, you have lost a customer with your horrible attitude. Been a loyal customer for many years but no more. I have never been treated like this in a restaurant. Awful rude man.

No idea why this is branded as the best fish and chips in Ely. Maybe because there is nothing else to choose from? Those saying it's amazing probably haven't tasted the real fish and chips from the coast or some place like George's Tradition or The Cod's Scallops. Here the chips felt soaked in oil and the fish felt the same, soaked in oil to the point I couldn't taste the actual fish. The most important thing is how you feel after eating such a meal and I just didn't feel very good, in that, there was this nasty aftertaste. Saying this, it wasn't the worst either. I have tried some places that were even worst. However 2 stars because they didn't accept card payments as it's cash only and my standards may be high after visiting George's Tradition or other top end fish and chips places, so I expected a lot more from a place that everyone says is amazing.

Took Mum out for the day for her birthday and she loves Ely. We both fancied fish and chips so we stopped off at the Fish House. Friendly, attentive staff and amazing fish and chips. Really tasty and generous portions. Just wish I lived a bit closer!
