Well, I’d give zero stars if I could. For what you get, you’re better off getting a microwave tv dinner which is so disappointing as we have been before and it was amazing!!! The menu is very dated, which I can see is part of the yesteryear charm, but the standard of ingredients and cooking is really poor for the price you pay. The starters had gristle and bone in them to an unreasonable level. The gravy with the beef was watery, the meat was chewy and the fish was overcooked to be too dry. I’m sure no one but forethought and planning are to blame, but the roast meat was served with boiled new potatoes as roast potatoes had run out by 7pm on a weekend. The waiter was a cheerful boy, but showed little flare for decent service, and took almost full plates back to the kitchen. No one asked how our meal was, and when we tried to speak to someone, they were all in the kitchen. I had hoped this was a random series of unfortunate events on a night without usual staff, but it appears a new normal having looked at other reviews. Such a shame for a historically lovely establishment with a beautiful location and lovely setting.

Gone for years, first went there when I was a young child. The last few visits have all been 5 star, as a fan of fish and game, I’m delighted to have their smoked trout starter and their casserole main, (tends to be pigeon/partridge dependent on the time of year). A large wine list too, really enjoyed the Agua Santa Pinot Noir from Chile with my meal, especially good with the pigeon. Customer service on point too. Would highly recommend as a place to eat in Ely.

A lovely old building close to the cathedral with all kinds of nooks and crannies. The normal dining room is at the back and you pass through the edge of the kitchen to get there. Scrubbed tables and an old-fashioned feel with local art on the wall. Good atmosphere. The food is well cooked and from another era of English cooking. Copious childhood dishes with not too much flavour in them but at least the cabbage wasn't "traditionally" over-cooked. Friendly staff doing their best.

This was the single worst meal I think 1 have ever been served. This include by my mother in law. The food was below the standard of a poor school canteen- far below the price point which it should sit at. I wish I had listened to the other negative reviews…….. Please avoid unless you want to enjoy the comedy of presentation and environment

So disappointed, food really not of restaurant standard but fairly highly priced (£22.50 for a main). Traditional English 80’s style food as you might eat at home, unfortunately not particularly tasty or well presented. Service friendly but slow, one poor lady serving the whole restaurant whilst we were there for Saturday night dinner. Such a shame as clearly a well regarded family run business, but I wouldn’t go again, seemed a lot of money for not a lot of return.

Had a wonderful meal here with friends. The portion sizes were good, food was lovely and the service was excellent. If I had to criticise anything it would just be the price of wines - a little on the expensive side, but this certainly wouldn't deter us from going again. Thank you for a great afternoon.

We had a lovely meal here, the house and gardens are lovely. The food was excellent. My husband and I had the fish in a dill sauce, it was beautifully presented, my husband thought the potatoes a bit hard, I thought they were fine. The vegetables were cooked really well, and there were plenty for all of us. Our friends dishes looked and tasted just as good, pork and vegetable roulade. We were offered extra helpings of our main course but felt satisfied with what we had eaten. The puddings were lovely. The restaurant was very busy and the food is made to order so don’t expect a fast food experience. We appreciated the chance to sit and chat and take a wander round the lovely garden- between main course and pudding.

A very mediocre experience having heard how good the food was previously. Service slow - we had to wait almost 20 minutes before being offered a drink. Some staff seemed stressy and not that friendly. Food was okay but the portions were small. Two diners had pate and had to share 6 small triangles of toast between them which seemed very mean. How expensive is another round of toast? Main course again okay, 2 potatoes per main course (which were hard) and a very measly portion of vegetables which had to serve 4 people. Surely vegetables are in abundance in the fens - why be so mean with the portion size? Deserts okay but the trifle was very average with no discernible layers. All in all a beautiful setting but considering the bill was £52 per head including a bottle of wine it wasn’t good value sadly. The ambience is however lovely but the food sadly lacking. I would not recommend sadly as the venue is a delight.

I'm a picky and fussy eater with very high standards when it comes to food, and I also OCD and claustrophobia so this place was just perfect! My partner and I traveled from London to Cambridgeshire for the weekend and decided to have lunch here with a close friend. We sat on the garden at the back of the restaurant. Service was a little bit slow as the bustling kitchen was struggling to keep up with the constant flow of customers that were coming in! It was sunny and the garden is lovely so we were sitting outside chatting, sipping Gran Verano Sauvignon Blanc! For starters all of us had Herrings with sour cream, dill and cucumber. For main, my friends had Lamb with jalapeno peppers and a mix of roast vegetables - all farm fresh! I had whole roasted Wood Pigeon! It was a challenge to get all the tough meat off the bones, but I managed to get all of it with the help of the narrow fork and steak knife! I relished it so much I had to resist lick the plate clean. The sauce was perfect. The bird tasted gamey as I like. I love organic, free range food that is freshly cooked and that is exactly what they serve here. For desert we had Apple crumble pie with raspberry, Pavlova fruit salad and Cherry trifle. The staff are friendly, professional, efficient and impressively managed to cope under pressure with a smile. I can always tell when staff genuinely enjoy their work and love their workplace! I'm sending a link to all my contacts in Cambridge to go and try this place. Google should have a 10 stars rating as that is what this establishment deserves!

We hosted our wedding reception of c.60 guests here, and I cannot complement Claire and the team enough! We’ve frequented the OFEH for a number of years as the quality of the food is superb, and when catering for a sit-down meal of this size the quality did not disappoint (many a complement from “foodie” guests) and service didn’t waver. Claire was wonderfully cool headed and could not have been more perfect in her management in the months running-up to and during the reception. They had excellent food options (catering to vegetarian and vegan), knowledgeable recommendations, and were flexible and responsive in terms of how we hosted (we managed to have the champagne/canapés and the end cheese course in their stunning gardens). It was just the ideal ambiance. They really helped make the day utterly perfect and we—and our guests—cannot complement Claire and the team enough for delivering!

Appalling, overpriced and not enough food to feed a 5 year old. Wine was off but they did replace it. Pork was like cardboard, 2 tiny potatoes per adult, a few basic tasteless veg and a piece of stuffing that would fit on a desert spoon. 3 roast dinners, 2 glasses of wine and a coke for £90 would expect more. Very disappointed as don't mind paying for small portions if food is good but this was awful. Waiter was really nice but that's about the only good thing I can say about the evening. Tables too close and too loud. Food not only over priced but so over cooked. Had to ask for a simple glass of water 5 times, we got served butter, but no bread, the vegetables for 3 had 6 small carrots, some decimated broad beans, and soggy cabbage, barely enough for one let alone 3!!! Only one vegetarian choice, so upsized a starter... Two times as much but 2.5 times the price! To cap it all, the baked ham was supposed to be gluten free.... but wasn't! Total and utter sham.

Disappointing visit, I specifically booked AFTERNOON TEA for 3 or 4 people saying I would confirm nearer the time. Phoned a couple of days before to confirm AFTERNOON TEA booking and exact number AND one of the party visited saying date of booking for AFTERNOON TEA and talk about food alergy options. When we arrived was told they dont serve AFTERNOON TEA! Waitress was apologetic and said would make up plates of sandwiches and scones with clotted cream and jam if we wanted. Scones arrived circling around one strawberry (would have thought knowing we had been sold something they weren't offering to 3 people they might at least have given us a strawberry each). Clotted cream was runny definately not thick clotted cream. However when the sandwiches arrived they were very nice. Overall disappointing and won't be going again, there are many other options in Ely that do offer Afternoon Tea.

We had eaten here before & were looking forward to their 'home cooking'. We were underwhelmed by the food. My chicken was bland despite the sauce & the roast potatoes were unimpressive. The other vegetables were beautifully cooked. The lemon pudding was three different lemon components which needed a contrast of colour, flavour or crunchy on the plate. All desserts/puddings were very pricey. The service was polite but came in below expectations due to lack of warmth and smiles. Overall a disappointing experience.

If you find yourself in Cambridge, check this place out.... Very under rated!!! There is a lot of space but recommended to book ahead for larger groups 😉 Please blame the wine for the lack /quality of food in the photos. Starter - crab mayonnaise. Simple but beautiful I had the haddock which also had prawns, dill and crayfish in an incredibly creamy sauce ( I'd cut it all up before remembering to take a photo) - this dish was STUNNING. I would definitely get it again. But the winner of the evening was the Cambridge burnt cream dessert. 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼 Oh my God, I would have bought a pint of it if I could, goooorgeous. Bear in mind the menu on the website is a lot less than what they can offer on the day as many of their dishes change daily

Our first time here for a Saturday lunch - a beautiful building with artworks upstairs. The restaurant seems to be shared between 3 dining rooms - we were in one with 2 tables for two and a large party of 10. We chose a nice table in a bay window overlooking the garden. It would have been nice if someone had been front of house, as we were standing like lemons for some considerable time, as were another couple behind us. I had to go in search of someone. Having said this, our waitress was really lovely - poor woman was rushed off her feet all through service - she appeared to be the only server! We started with a drink - a rose Adnams Prosecco for me, a pint of beer for my husband - drinks took quite a while to materialise, and our order wasn't taken very quickly, either. I have to mention the gorgeous bread and good butter on the table - absolutely delicious! We decided to forego a starter, so waited too long for our mains - why do restaurants do this? however, the food was very good - I chose seabass fillet - a good portion, with crayfish and dill sauce, Hasselback potatoes and well presented dish of veg - leeks, mashed swede and cauliflower florets - all well cooked and full of flavour. My husband has the veggie option - broccoli and mushroom lasagne - eclectically served with a jacket potato and a baked half avocado. But he said it was very good. Another positive about this place is no service on the bill. The main problem was that it was just so cold in the room - a small heater had been installed near the large party, but where we were seated was shivery. Well, a nice experience all in all - if you like this "old school" set up, it is for you - certainly, food good and generous portions.

We were recommended this restaurant and it has taken us some time to finally get here. The building is historic and well maintained, bare floor boards add to the character but do little to dampen the background noise from a full restaurant. The food is traditionally English, in season and well cooked and presented. You have a choice between a 2/3 fixed price menu (3 choices for each course) and an A la Carte I had tomato and onion soup, a great dish, along with Sea Bass, with prawns, hasselback potatoes, whilst my partner had haddock with a dill and cream sauce, followed by rice pudding with maple apples (brilliant). So why 4 rather than 5 stars, the service, was friendly but the one server was rushed, covering the whole restaurant (it appeared which had a number of different rooms). A couple of time things were promised , water, which never appeared, a wine list arriving 15 or so minutes later long pauses between courses, with empty plates. We felt sorry for the waitress.

The staff were very understanding when our group number got reduced from 10 to 8 at the beginning of the week, and then finally to 6 diners due to train strike. No booking deposit was required to secure our table. Really good home cooking, the crab starter was thoroughly enjoyed by those who chose it. We were delighted they offered us seconds of the main course but only one diner took up this offer whilst the rest of us saved ourselves for dessert. The dishes may have been a couple £ dearer than most places (£21.50 for mains, £8.80 for starters & desserts) but we were not rushed and overall we had a lovely experience. I've eaten here quite a few times now. It's offers standard English dishes from decades ago. No cheffy touches to the meals, in fact no particular effort with presentation at all. What I thought would be a salmon salad was a good sized fillet on a plate with a potato salad and some hot new potatoes. Then a bowl of green salad where no effort had been made to tear the large leaves into smaller pieces. The restaurant boasts 'the feeling of a family home' and that's clear in the food which is of a reasonable home-cook standard. Portion sizes are pretty good and they often provide seconds. However, the prices are more of a higher end restaurant. Starters around £8, £21.50 for a main and £8.80 for a pudding (although you can have a half portion for half price - and that will be quite big enough) The set menu on lunchtime weekdays is better value. Whatever I've chosen from either menu, I always feel that bit disappointed.

We've been to the Old Fire Engine many times over the last decade and sadly this was likely our final visit. We waited 15 minutes to be given menus (let alone offered a drink). Starters and main courses took two hours with no apology other than "were really busy". The restaurant was full. There was one member of staff waiting. One. As usual the food was pretty good but it couldn't rescue the evening. Will no longer recommend.

Very disappointing. Do not get conned into thinking this place looks exclusive because of the lovely old building. Hospital cafeteria levels of bland food - and very expensive for what it is. Slow to non-existent service. Many drastically better places to eat in Ely

Brilliant food, service and atmosphere. We visited for my partner's 50th Birthday celebration. The staff were fantastic... they set the table up with decorations and were wonderful at accommodating us. Delicious food, huge portions and they also were great at making a special gluten free vegan meal. 5 stars all round!

A real gem, tucked away in the centre of Ely. Couldn't fault anything! The roast lamb was the best we have tasted, so succulent. Friendly, efficient waiting staff. A perfect way to spend an evening.

Pleasant location with delightful gardens outside. Good menu. However, length of time to serve both one glass of wine and two main courses was unacceptable (over an hour from the time we sat down) especially as both mains were cold dishes. We were offered the glass of wine on the house as a gesture of apology.

A hidden gem in Ely, very unpretentious. I had low expectations as no menu was available on the web site or at the door, but actually they had a wide choice of delicious food ( maybe not as much for vegetarians). Comfortable relaxed dining room, lovely garden, good service and ample amounts of very good food. Would definitely recommend this! ( Can't understand the poor review last month "I don't understand why people eat here" - I asked the staff why they do not respond, but they just don't! Even if they did not like the food, there is no way the portions were small; the staff felt the review was about another restaurant, or maybe from a competitor? ) We had 4 nights in Ely and this was by far the best meal we ate.

We had lovely fresh scones along with tea and coffee in the garden. A friendly welcome and good service. The front door was closed and we almost walked away thinking the café was shut, try it to avoid disappointment.

If WW2 and rationing are your idea of good food, and you have never been to a restaurant in your life before, then this is the place for you. I would give this place negative stars if possible. The food is awful, like a school dinner from the 1970s trying to mate with the worst "haute cuisine" of the 1980s. A bizarre avocado side with the veg "lasagne" and some venison stew that passed for bad quality dog food, was served with a dish of vegetables boiled to within an inch of their life - just like your worst Brussel sprout nightmare! To drink, we had sour beer and G&T with no ice in a filthy glass. The red wine that followed (in a wine cooler?) was mediocre at best, and they even dare to list a bottle at £700! Add to that a "prosecco" in a single serve bottle from Adnams brewery, very odd addition to the wine list. The service was not awful, but the staff clearly don't know any better and have yet to have the luck to visit real restaurants. The building itself could have been amazing with some TLC and a little bit of contemporary hospitality experience. I'm still not sure if my dinner here was an elaborate prank, or just the worst restaurant experience I am likely to ever have. Avoid at all costs.

I like a restaurant with an atmosphere, an interesting menu prepared well and friendly but not overbearing service. The old fire engine delivers on all counts. Local ingredients, adaptations for dietary requirements also. We have been before and shall come again. And prices very fair.

This restaurant was recommended by a friend to us and we were not disappointed. One of us had a great goat's cheese starter then both had the roast lamb which was delicious. My husband was delighted to be offered more lamb! Excellent wine.

This pub has new owners and we thought we’d try the food there as the menu looked good. The night we went was pie night, so we both ordered beef in stout pies . Great chips and well cooked veggies, but what a fantastic pie, bursting with slow cooked beef in a great pastry. Looking forward to the next meal here.
