Nice place, served quickly and bar maid was friendly. Has a nice atmosphere but yet another place allowing in dogs... One in there was about the size of a horse! Think they'd have something to say if I rocked up and took my horse in there!! The place had the fusty, smell of dog... It's gross. đ€ąđ€ź The restaurant area was separate and I assume they don't allow dogs in there but the smell carries... Stop allowing dogs in!! Not all are small, clean and quiet. It makes your pub stink!! Not a nice environment for a chilled pint at the end of the week.

We visited this pub two nights in a row when staying in Shardlow on our narrowboat. We met up with friends for drinks one night and a meal on the second night. We were pleased with the choice of ales and the three dogs we had between us were made welcome, plenty of room for them to lie down. The food was nice and it was a pleasant pub to spend time in. Two things though spoilt the experience, one was that the toilets on the second night smelt horrendous, as if someone had been seriously ill in there, I was heaving and couldnât stay a second longer to even wash my hands (I noticed a pump-out lorry came the day after so maybe their septic tank was full). The other thing was that their website says they shut at 11 on a Monday and yet we were âencouraged to leaveâ at 10 and the member of staff on duty said he âusually likes to leave at 9.30 on a Mondayâ. Please update your website with the current times, it is really frustrating when pub opening times arenât up to date, it seems to be a regular occurrence everywhere we go!

Nice meal, great size portions. One main was salty. Had the fixed menu, staff would not change a main course unless we paid for the deluxe menus. First two courses very good, well cooked and presented. Main was good except for prawn in black bean, which was rather salty. Couple on the next table did not eat any of one of their beef mains, saying it was far too salty to eat, so do complain if you can't eat it. We managed ours but would have preferred less salt, rest of the mains were good in quality and presentation.

The bouncer stoped my mum by the door when we was going into the pub and then chased my cousin into the pub cause I didnât realise kids couldnât go in past 8:30 and then grabbed her arm and dragged her out screaming at her and then when we got outside he was being all nice to my mum saying like ohh sorry kids arenât allowed in past 8:30 and left marks on her arm and if he had grabbed her any harder he would of broke the skin . Terrible experience, a family pub shouldnât have âbouncersâ doing that to children disgraceful . This man was about 40-50 and was wearing a black and white striped shirt and jeans .

Please note that this cafe is no longer called Mad Hatters and is now the Waterside Cafe. The staff are friendlier and the food is lovely, they open at consistent times (handy as the toilets are only open when the cafe is). There was a lot of fuss when Mad Hatters lease was not renewed and the catering taken on by Derby City Council but it has in my opinion improved.

Provided the perfect stop after visiting Calke Abbey. It was a birthday event day and we enjoyed super service from Clare, Elle and Tracey. The meals were excellent and good value for money, in a warm pub atmosphere. Nothing was too much trouble, despite it being a busy lunchtime.
