Golden Dragon in South Derbyshire

Nice meal, great size portions. One main was salty. Had the fixed menu, staff would not change a main course unless we paid for the deluxe menus. First two courses very good, well cooked and presented. Main was good except for prawn in black bean, which was rather salty. Couple on the next table did not eat any of one of their beef mains, saying it was far too salty to eat, so do complain if you can't eat it. We managed ours but would have preferred less salt, rest of the mains were good in quality and presentation.

Don’t bother. Have been twice now. First time they forgot about our table and ignored us for nearly an hour, and the second time they denied our reservation despite being showed our confirmation email so we hurriedly had to book a table elsewhere. It is the worst customer service we have endured for a long time and have no intention of going back.

This was an excellent find for a stop between Alton Towers back to London. They couldn't be more accommodating for our party of 15 with children and adults. They took our order over the phone and the food arrived almost immidiately. Hot, fresh and delicious. The manager who took the order over the phone was lovely and so patient and helpful. Would highly recommend!

We booked online for the restaurant. The food was excellent. We had a 7 month old baby with us who became the star of the show with the staff. Nothing was too much trouble, the food and drinks were served promptly, especially as it was a bank holiday weekend and the restaurant was busy. My family were from Manchester and commented that is was the best meal they had eaten in ages. WELL DONE AND EXCELLENT PLACE!

Had to wait a long time to be served - Not offered drinks or prawn crackers when shown to table - No sauce with the dim sum waiter said we should have ordered it ! - Crispy duck and pancakes really nice - dumplings good (when sauce arrived) - Main course took around half an hour after starter and was nice especially the crispy beef - really tasty Chicken and cashews but it doesn’t have much sauce - egg fried rice excellent - noodles very salty probably done with too much soy sauce (for our liking) This place serves good food but perhaps we would visit when less busy.

Stumbled across this place, on a quiet road near the A50 leading to a village. The menu online looked good so thought I'd give it a go. From the outside it looked a bit 'down market' but DON'T be deceived, the food here is quality stuff ! (only criticism the noodles were a bit too salty) The menu is extensive with plenty of meat, fish and vegetarian options.... Portions were decent and the cost was less than I was expecting. Staff are nice and the service was great. Comfortable atmosphere and a decent size. Overall I'd say definitely above average and well worth a visit.

This was our first visit here, we thought the food was good and we all enjoyed what we had, the service was attentive and the price was quite reasonable. Quite a nice atmosphere and the place was busy. We will definitely return.

Very disappointing and expensive meal. Two of us had the set menu (the starters were nice, but not the mains). Three had a la carte dishes. Meat and seafood were overdone. Generic sauces drowned the salty, flavourless dishes. We were also kept waiting a very long time between courses.

Fantastic food and service restaurant was very busy and they still managed to serve us with great service and drink and the food just amazing we went stayed up near the airport Uber cost us 14 pound but well worth a visit

First time visiting and can honestly say, we won't be returning. We had a set menu for 2 person Starters we're passable but main course was awful The steak and chicken were mock meat covered on salt and spices. Steak was horrible (Tinned) Chicken chow main very salty and mock chicken.

Fantastic night for my dads 80th. Service and food was faultless. We were a party of 20 in a packed restaurant and it went brilliantly! Thanks to Aaron and the whole team for making my dads 80th so special.

Staying at the EMA Raddison Blue we opted for a Uber visit (£10) to the Golden Dragon. Very busy (popular) but the service was excellent with numerous staff checking that you had been served /were happy. And we were with excellent food and drink ! Lots of choice and a very tasty menu. We will be back

We live less than 3 miles away and have been driving past this place to get a Chinese take away for years, who’s the fool! This was truly the best takeaway I have had in area, good portion size, food was fresh and tasty, the egg fried rice was especially nice not greasy at all. We had: one portion of sweet and sour chicken, crispy beef, chicken satay, spare ribs and egg fried rice. Here is hoping the food is consistently good, looking forward to the next takeaway already.

Had a lovely evening tonight with family, food was excellent and the service was great. Just needs a little tlc on decor that’s all.

So disappointing, have been several times, always good, tonight was awful. Service dreadful, one poor waitress running round trying to hold it together, the other spent half the evening folding napkins despite 4-5 tables waiting to be cleared. Had to go to counter to order desserts. Everyone looked really fed up. We were there for 3 hours , apart from 1 staff couldn't care less.Final insult was being charged twice for our desserts. Will not be returning.

Initially accommodating, booking taken and usual details taken. Only to be them informed 3 hours before the manager had taken some more important bookings and we were being cancelled. After explaining people were travelling it’s clear your managers mates are more important. Terrible service and you clearly don’t care.

Visited the Golden Dragon last night on the recommendation of friends and it sure did not disappoint. The building is very impressive and on arrival we were greeted with a friendly smile. The restaurant was at full capacity which was a great indication of things to come, and it also gave a good vibe creating a nice atmosphere. The waitresses and waiter we had were excellent, in particular with one of the party who had an allergy. He was very reassuring! The food was excellent and considering the restaurant was full, the service time was spot on! We will for sure be back in the near future, I’d recommend the golden dragon to friends, couples and families. It is by far the best restaurant in the area for sit down Chinese/Cantonese cuisine!

We wanted to treat ourselves to a nice lunch out between Christmas and New Year and, having been here a few times before and never disappointed, decided to visit the Golden Dragon which is situated close to M1 Junction 24/A50 and with onsite parking. We booked ahead but it was quiet. Decided to try the Vegetarian set meal (£20/person, min 2) as it featured dishes I love (mock duck, aubergine, beancurd) and some different ones. It was excellent. Started with vegetarian Yuk Sung - tasty fried finely chopped vegetables served with lettuce 'wraps'. Then the crispy mock duck with pancakes, sauce and vegetables. The three mains came together - sizzling aubergine hotpot, vegetables and cashew nuts in a crispy potato nest, and tasty fried beancurd and mushrooms, with egg fried rice. All delicious and beautifully served and garnished with spring onions, parsley, lettuce and carrots sliced into flowers. Service was warm, friendly and efficient. We couldn't eat it all and the leftovers were boxed up for us to take home. Great value, tasty and filling lunch. Highly recommended.

Food is fantastic, always hot, tasty and fresh. Great place to celebrate with family or just a nice meal as a couple. Always look forward to our visits here.

After visiting Alton towers was unable to eat at the park due to it being very busy. Found this restaurant which is only 6 minutes away from where we are staying, online and looked and sounded very nice. We was late arriving but still was warmly welcomed at the door. Food outstanding and staff are absolutely lovely and finding out it was my birthday they treated me to a complementary ice cream with a candle and sung happy birthday. Recommend to everyone and will definitely be coming back again.

It looks like yet another old pub turned into a restaurant but with little thought gone into it One Quite abrupt staff member who really didn’t explain the banquet menu so we ended up ordering far to much food what a waste Food was ok and great size portions just felt a little let down

We really love Chinese takeaways but this was so disappointing especially for the price! We only ordered as our normal Chinese was shut… salt and pepper chicken and chips didn’t even taste spicy whatsoever and the prawn crackers tasted like they were cooked/fried in old oil… so disappointing

Did a park and wait (but for only a min) .... food was great really liked the duck...staff polite and efficient is expensive but we thought it was worth it.

Because we are in lockdown, decided to order a New Year’s Eve takeaway from the most expensive Chinese in the area, as a treat. TREAT it most definitely was not. Having ordered at 9.30am via text as requested, sooner the better apparently, didn’t get it confirmed until 3.00pm, so weren’t sure it was even coming. Then it did arrive, cold, tasteless and not all correct. We’ll go back to the ‘ordinary’ ones in future. I have complained directly to them but no reply

Ordered takeaway food from their sister restaurant and had great food. Then one night the donnington one was shut so we decided to try the golden dragon... for the same dishes, 26 quid vs the 19 from the donnington restaurant.We complained obviously and tonight we tried to order from donnington, and were unable to because the ‘Boss’ had told them not to accept orders from us.Citing his higher overhead costs - they share the same bloody kitchen !We’ve been going to the golden dragon for 30 plus years, we only tried his take away service to help a local business in lockdown.Please don’t use this restaurant - unless you want to be treated with contempt.The 26 quid meal was meant to be extra spicy - not a chilli in sight.As you can tell - not very happy

Visited here with friends. Friendly greeting, very tight on their Covid arrangements. Sadly that is the highlight of this review.Three of us ordered curry, all different types, which all tasted exactly the same, a slightly different filling when it came to the type of curry, but mainly vegetables for all. However it was not good.A starter was ordered, which for the first time in my experience, ever, was served at the same time as the main course! Everything piled into the table at the same time? We will not be going back.

We ordered a take away on a Friday after work, it was ordered at 6:10pm with obviously our address given, I phoned an hour after the order to check on an update and was told it was being sorted, we was then told 10 minutes later at 7:20pm that they wouldn’t be able to deliver the food because we where to far away, I understand that there’s only so far you can expect them to deliver but surly they should have said this at the time we ordered and not 1hr 20 minutes after ?? Very disappointed at there incompetence!

We ordered a takeaway during the lockdown period. It was £54 for 2 people we went through the bill and they had charded £9 for 1 portion of rice. The food was also very average. The takeaway prices are close to the eat in restaurant price this really needs looking at we feel overcharged. They knocked 10% off for takeaway but then charged us £4 delivery for a £54 order it makes not sense. The following week we ordered the same food from elsewhere and it was only £31 with free delivery. They really should start looking after their customers, wont be using them again.

The food is always great here- fresh, tasty and delicious. Never had a bad meal here. Alan the owner is always attentive and friendly. Last night he gave us a lift home, completely genuinely and voluntarily, after our pre-booked taxi let us down. We were overwhelmed by his kindness and generosity - what a super guy! Thanks again Alan, we really appreciated it!

As usual the food was excellent but lack of service left us a little disappointed at the end if the evening.

All my favorite food is on the buffet at this restaurant. Had a lovely lunch with family for my birthday. For the price I feel no-one can complain.

Went here for a family birthday, the Sunday buffet is small but you can go up as much as you like and for £10, you can't moan. Will definitely go again.

Went today for a buffet luch to celebrate a birthday. One of the gentlemen staff was fresh from charm school, obviously having failed at all his exams, he was very grumpy and a man of few words. So that's a bad start. The food was tepid, tasteless, beige, boring and bland, you get the gist. Mark's and Spencer do a great chineese buffet and there staff are super happy and helpful which is a bonus. Give this place a try if you want a boring and tasteless meal but I strongly advise against it.

If you like your Sunday buffet with limited choice and no atmosphere, then The Golden Dragon is the place to go.The staff are not very friendly and the food is lukewarm at best. The table which the food is laid on is about the size of a paste table, which is probably why the plates are tiny.

Had a long wait for drinks. Couldn't just order at bar,Had to go in a queuing system! Food was good as usual and staff friendly. Didn't have too much as trying to watch calories!!

We arrived in good time and I have never seen a place so busy. Altough we had booked for 8.30 we didnt have a table, we asked for drinks which took an age, i asked about our table and was told it was for 7.30. I showed the conformation e mail and they had no answer but we were soon seated.

Popped in here with friends for Sunday lunch a d the saff were really friendly and the food was great. Bit of a limited menu but plenty of food for everyone

We have not visited the Golden Dragon for a while, but have been regular customers over the years and always ‘rated it’ as very good.

Saturday night family dinner for 4. Great warm welcoming service. Good atmosphere. Lovely clean and warm restaurant. Serving staff helpful and ready to serve at a moments notice without hovering around the tables.

I have always seen the restaurant on my way to the M1 from Shardlow and for my Birthday decided to try it out.

We visited as a group of 5 for a birthday celebration.

After a lovely family day out to Alton towers the family and I decided to make a trip on the way back to this Chinese. As we pulled up at 10:30 pm it was clear that there was no one inside the restaurant but online clearly stated that it closes at 11:30pm. Pulling up we were met with stares from inside the window by the restaurant staff. They continued to stare till we began getting out the car. One of the men inside got up went to the door and changed the “open” sign to “closed” and walked off. We are very angry with the way we were looked at and treated and felt completely alienated. Very upset and had to deal with upset from youngest child who was hungry and excited to be having Chinese. Very very disappointed.

After discussion with the owner he suggested a set meal, he was so helpful and gave advice. When we arrived to collect the meal, it was ready, all boxed up. The feedback from our guests were the meal was first class, it was hot, tasty and presented wonderful. Thanks for making my birthday great.

Family birthday , really disappointed , food was very basic , starters were okay , but as for the rest of the dishes no comment.

My wife and myself went for the Sunday buffet, and found the choice to be very limited and the food not being topped up regularly enough.

I have been to this restaurant a number of times and can not fault it.

Visited here with a group if friends on Bank Holiday Sunday evening. Staff were very friendly, readily accommodating an additional unbooked diner. There was a short delay before our order was taken but this was useful as not all of our party were used to Chinese eating. Food was of a very good standard, the crispy duck was plentiful and very tasty, probably the best I have ever tasted. Most of our group had the £23 Special which gave us 3 courses including the crispy duck, which we felt more expensive than a comparable restaurant near home. This is the reason for my 4 star rather than 5 star rating.

Took my Dad for lunch and we shared 3 dishes between us. The food was delicious and the portion size was just right. Attention to detail was great, with plates brought to the table pre warmed, food placed on a hotplate, and a choice of cutlery or chopsticks. Nothing was too much trouble and the price was reasonable.

My husband ordered a takeaway for collection, on opening we found the shazwan chicken was missing !! Upon a phone call they were not interested as they were far too busy on the restaurant & cleary they thought a takeaway was less important for a tasty meal the rest of our order was pants cold total waste of £20 we have always had good food in the restaurant but won’t be asking for a takeaway again & will think twice about going back to the restaurant if this is now their of service

Tried the Sunday buffet and great value. Not the best of starts as even though restaurant opened at 12 there was no sign of any food for at least 20 minutes. Service was ok but not that attentive and I had to go to the bar to ask for more drinks as did others. Food made up for it. Good choice, all very tasty and at less than £10 per person great value. Will def give another go.

Ordered take-away, Deluxe meal for two, was shocked at how quick it was ready, only 10 mins from ordering! On arriving home we found the Hosin sauce and bits for pancake rolls missing. The meal this time was lack luster and flavourless, very dissappointed as normally very good.

We live under 3 miles from The Golden Dragon and have done so for many years but until now we have never visited.

I took a group of 39 for lunch and we all had one of the really good value set menus.

Love this place. Food is excellent - varied menu with chef’s suggestions. It’s a bit of a drive from where I live, but it’s worth it. Staff always friendly and welcoming. Would definitely recommend.

Went here for my mum's family birthday meal and i must say it was really nice, no complaints from anyone, would definitely recommend.

Visited Golden Dragon for the first time on 17/2/19, went for Sunday lunch with family. It is excellent value for money, all that I would eat was on the buffet. Everyone enjoyed the meal and we was not rushed. Will be visiting again.

The food at the Golden Dragon was excellent - I would highly recommend a visit. It was very quiet when we visited, the service was fast and friendly.

We have eaten before at this restaurant and on both occasions have been quite satisfied with both the food and the service.This Sunday however we decided to try the Sunday buffet and I can honestly say that is the worst one that I have ever visited. We arrived at 12.30 pm only 30 minutes after they had opened and we found on arrival at the food serving area that not only was the choice of food very limited compared to other Chinese restaurants we have visited, but also most of the offerings were starting to cool off and were only just warm,but some of them were almost cold. There were no prawns at all and most of the dishes were chicken in some form which is not my favourite meat.

Had an amazing dinner at this restaurant. Allen and his team were very welcoming, friendly, attentive and highly professional. The restaurant was full and very busy. The restaurant is located just before you enter Shardlow. The food was delicious and and of high standard. Even though the restaurant was full of diners, we didn’t have to wait long for starters and the mains.

When for the Sunday lunch buffet, as always good quality and value for money. Not a massive selection but what there is is always good. Have been before and will certainly go again.

Absoloutly love this restaurant, we live in Shardlow and have been using this restaurant for Sunday lunches, date night and take always and can honestly say we have never in the past 2 years had a bad meal....fluffy rice, perfectly cooked veg, fab sweet n sour chicken and great chips. The staff are great, so happy and cheerful.

We arrived as the restaurant opened at 6pm with 2 children in our party. I had to chase the meal after an hour and a half as still not arrived. They seemed too busy serving their family members who were also in the restaurant - amazing how they got their meals quicker than paying customers. Staff were unfriendly and when we complained they were not prepared to offer any form of apologies or discount.

We have visited this restaurant and also had takeaways several times before. On this occasion We were a party of 5 with 2 children, we arrived as the restaurant opened at 6pm. We were alone in the restaurant except for a couple. We ordered our food just after the couple, we saw lots of food being taken from the kitchen to what I assume was the owners family in another part of the restaurant, then a Chinese family of 4 arrived, they ordered and there food arrived long before ours or the couples, the couple eventually got their starters and decided to call it a night as they didn’t want to wait for their mains. After 1.5 hours the Chinese family had eaten their starters and mains and had left and we queried when our food would arrive and was very rudely told it’s on its way. The food was ok when it arrived nothing special. When we had finished we were asked it we wanted anything else were we said no just the bill. Low and behold this arrived straight away and was £30 more than we had ever paid before. When paying I told them we had waited a ridiculous amount of time and we would like a reduction to reflect this. After lost of huffing and puffing we were given a £4 discount and no apology. If there is such a thing as food racism we were definitely subjected to this tonight. I will never visit this place again! If I could give them 0 starts I would

we arrived at the green dragon about 6.30 on a Saturday evening and were surprised by the amount of vehicles in the car park. it was no different in the restaurant. we had prawn crackers, what a plate full amazing, 2 starters and 2 mains with egg fried rice. everything was just about perfect. good quality and quantity. it was our first time as our favourite Chinese in derby has closed but we will be back.

This was a first time visit and it was a pleasing experience. Although initially the service was in question (a little slow) we’ll put it down to us being there at the start of service, but once some additional staff arrived things improved. The staff were very friendly.

First visit to the Golden Dragon. We went as a party of six for the Sunday Buffet. Lovely traditional restaurant and a good selection of hot food to tempt us. I was surprised how reasonably priced the buffet was.

We have used the Dragon many times and have meant to do a review before now! Staff are always courteous and quick at getting you seated and taking drinks orders, menu is extensive and varied and all cooked to a high standard!

Want out for a Chinese last night. Not high expectations but was amazed with the quality, freshness, and flavours. Crispy duck starter was good but most Chinese can do that. Mains were crispy chilli chicken birds nest, sizzling king prawn with ginger and spring onion, beef szetuan (spellcheck), vegetable Singapore rice, and vegetable chow main. I was amazed that I couldn't choose a favourite dish as all were super. Good quality ingredients, fresh crunchy vegetables and a distinct flavour to each dish - no base source with bits added. Prawns succulent with a light ginger and spring onion sauce, clean, light and fresh. Beef sechuan ( spellcheck) tender, lean beef, fresh chilli, rich vibrant sauce not goo and not watery. Vegetables, mushroom, water chestnuts all fresh and firm. Shredded chicken not too fine so all batter and no chicken and not dried out. Sauce slightly sweet, but also rich and a little spicy, peppers crunchy but not raw. Again not goo but rich and flavoursome. Chow mein crispy noodles, lovely fresh veg, nice flavour. Singapore rice, light curry flavour as it should be. Again fresh veg, not stodgy.

we arrived and were seated straight away. Our friends had never been to this place before and the excitement of something new to them was mesmerising especially when the chop sticks arrived which they duly gave up on !! They were guided by our choices of dishes which they thoroughly enjoyed and the wine flowed. Good laugh and an great evening was had by all

What a shame these people let you down on bookings especially when booked weeks in advance ! We gave this place another chance after our last visit resulted in again table not available & also over charged on the bill despite me giving them a good tip (my fault as i did not check at the time) & unfortunately although the food was ok the carpets are dirty , walls & radiators stained with food & a bad smell of drains so will give it a miss until it gets a clean & tidy up. It is a shame when a nice place takes a nosedive & this certainly has.

We turned up tonight without pre booking and despite being incredibly busy Alan managed to find us a table. The food was excellent and the experience was great as always. Highly recommended

Living locally we have eaten here several times. Usually we get drawn in by one of the excellent set menus or we are here for the Sunday buffet. However, on this occasion we fancied fish and went a la carte. Are we glad we did. The sea bass was a marvellous fish, served and deboned at the table and cooked perfectly. With a quarter duck starter and accompanied by fried rice this was a lovely anniversary dinner.

Great tasty food and a fantastic price for Sunday lunch. Good selection with threw courses on offer.

Been here half a dozen times or more over the years. Food is consistently delicious. Last nights visit put us off though. They were busy, granted, but not full. Early evening too. Too long a wait for coffee and when it arrived, no milk or cream. Staff wandering about asking customers if everything was ok with their meals, whilst ignoring the needs of other customers? I don’t get it.

We visited for my god sons birthday on a Sunday in July and had the all you can eat buffet. Often at these kinds of things I find the food is lukewarm and a bit stale, however because the selection is very carefully considered and the amount of food out at one time is relatively small (but definitely enough), the food was constantly hot and fresh. The most popular food is available and it was all lovely.

I live in Stoke and had an invite with two friends for a meal at Golden Dragon just off the A50 near Derby. it was worth the trip. It was a FIRST class meal. we all enjoyed it.

Have been here a few times, staff very helpful and friendly. Never had a bad meal here, and have used it for takeaway for as well which was very nice. Definitely recommend.

Works meal recommended by one of my colleagues who had eaten there before. We all chose different meals rather than choosing from the various set menus available I had chicken satay to start, good size portion but pretty generic in taste not that I would expect any different. Followed with a sizzling king prawn dish again it was ok but nothing to write home about. Would I go back probably not and would I recommend again probably not. There is so much competition out there for your hard earned buck I am sure you could find something much more memorable. The only saving grace was that the company paid for this meal for which I am very thankful as I don’t think I would have been impressed with the quality for the price.

Being in the area visiting our daughter for a few days we decided how nice it would be to go for a Sunday meal. My daughter rang to book a table but no one was answering. Eventually she got to speak to a lady who offered her 1 at 1:30 So she agreed and we arrived at the due time. We were left waiting for over 20minutes with 4 small children.eventually we were taken to a table and went to get food. Hardly anything there and what was was luke warm. Our 3 year old Granddaughter has allergies so they were uncertain of what she could eat all we had was one small plate of food as they did not refresh the food trays. When we left I went to pay and was charged full price I mentioned how disgusted I was hardly any food etc and was told YOU CAME TOO LATE well you should not have let us book if you were not going to supply us with food. I mentioned the long wait she said they were getting a table ready when there were many empty ones!!She would not reduce the bill I was disgusted and would never visit again we all came away hungry and £55 worse off how disgusting is that?

After an absence of a few years we re-visited this restaurant twice in a month. Our first visit was for a lunch meal and food was ordered from the main menu. Service was very good and the food was excellent. Our second visit was for the Buffet Lunch which takes place on Sundays. There was a good variety of food available on the buffet and again it was of a good quality. The buffet provides a nice change for Sunday lunch and the restaurant is a great venue for that special occasion.

Had our starters pretty quick after ordering but waited an hour and half for 2nd course which still didn't arrive. Ended up walking out very hungry. Do not bother

Really nice food, good staff. Good service and really reasonable prices. To say how busy it was we really enjoyed it. Wouldn't of found it without sat nav though as quite out of the way.
