New Inn in South Derbyshire

I often visit the New Inn at Shardlow with my husband, so I chose to take a friend here for lunch. We didn't book and it was really busy (a Thursday lunchtime). As we were waiting at the bar to ask about a table, one of the ladies came to us and asked how many of us there were; she then proceeded to find us a table - brilliant. We both ordered salad bowls and they were delicious, as always. We will keep coming here for the friendly and efficient service, and great food.

We would advise booking if you intend eating here … it certainly is popular and we often see people turning up who haven’t booked . As usual we booked early evening and being creatures of habit both ordered cheesey chicken from the light bites menu. Didn’t wait long , the chips were hot and salad looked fresh as usual . We find the light bites menu just enough without wasting anything. A member of staff checked on us part way through the meal and bought more tomato ketchup as requested. Can’t fault the New Inn , the staff are all super polite . Definitely recommend.

Recently visited this lovely canal side pub for a meal, we were served very quickly and enjoyed our meal we always finish with a latte or cappuccino but unfortunately it was one of the worst coffees we have ever had, it was hot watery milk we complained to the bar staff who said their was nothing they could do as the machine was preset? This has not been our experience drinking Lavazza from other outlet’s

Busiest day of the year, Shardlow Festival. Understaffed, one member of staff completely losing the plot in front of customers. Eventually they shut the pub for half the afternoon. Reficulous, unprofessional. Thr hospitality industry have grizzled on about their woes since Covid. Even when they do have a opportunity to do well they blow it big time.

This is one of our favourite places to eat .. we tend to go early evening as it does get very busy , booking is recommended and to be honest the car park is a bit tight ! We had booked and arrived a little early at 5pm for our requested table for 5.30 pm . As usual we were seated at our requested table … not near or close but actually where we requested. Other establishments should take note … customers book a certain table for a reason ! Evie served us our drinks , a very polite young lady and reminded us that we couldn’t order til 5.30pm …maybe she heard my stomach rumbling! … We ordered cheesy chicken from the lite bites menu , having pestered the other member of staff , Jeremy to take our order . Jokingly he said he d type slowly! A very nice young man . The pub was filling up nicely, many people sitting outside enjoying the view of the canal and the passing barges . We didn’t wait long til our meals were in front of us , piping hot as usual, no complaints whatsoever. The kitchen staff must be working their socks off , as indeed the bar staff do , we would definitely recommend the New Inn Shardlow to anyone in the area , well worth seeking out , not only for the food but also the staff .

I have visited the New Inn since my childhood and is still our family favourite!. We regularly eat out, and visit a fair few restaurants but nothing compares to the food at the New Inn. Great food, always piping hot and consistently good, never a long wait, great prices, friendly staff, friendly atmosphere, lovely canal side location.

After a lovely day out we were looking for a pub serving meals and happily found The New Inn at Shardlow. Food wasn’t available until 5.30pm so enjoyed a drink and studied the specials board until then. We were very impressed with the friendly young staff - no glum, bored faces here! Our meals duly arrived and were all delicious. Considering it was early on a Tuesday evening, every table was taken. That speaks for itself and we will definitely be returning. Would love to see more veggie/vegan offerings on the menu although two of us could not fault the vegetarian lasagne.

Best Sunday lunch we've had for a long time , only negative was no chicken and I'm a chickenairian as in vegetarian but saying that the beef was tremendous, big thanks to all the staff everyone of them are a credit to your pub ,many thanks from table 18.

Great meal as always We have the steak light bite very nice ,love the chips don’t change them 😋 staff very pleasant. Will keep returning.

We love the New Inn at Shardlow it offers great food and service with a smile and has a lovely outdoor seating area in good weather overlooking the canal. It also has a lovely cosy indoors seating area too.

Thanks Martin for our Bank Holiday gathering. One guy had ridden 186 miles (each way) for your breakfast. Great venue, food and as all remarked friendly staff.

A cracking little pub in a pleasant spot by the canal that happens also to serve really good pub food. We eat here probably once every couple of months on average and the standard is always really high. Servings are generous and served piping hot, with a good menu carrying all the pub favourites, with many extra possibilities on the specials board. Employs a lot of young people, often students out of term time, but the owners clearly insist on a high standard of service and the staff are invariably attentive and polite.

We were staying at Shardlow Marina Caravan Site and walked out to find some late lunch (about 3pm) after arriving. We were told food started serving again at 5pm so we had a drink and waited until 5pm - glad we did! Very good value, huge portions and tasty food - we had the Pepper Burger (specials board) and Cumberland Sausage and Mash (main) - neither of us could finish it! It got very busy here and most tables were reserved, so I think we were lucky to get one and hold onto it - would recommend booking.

Went today for local food , definitely best shardlow has to offer , hadnt booked wish we had we was lucky they could accommodate us for a certain length of time. Staff amazing service fast friendly can’t fault it Food was lovely my company had wraps which came with chips , both loved them I had roast of day baguette beautiful meat , agree with another person comment the aren’t homemade but I still say they are very nice cooked well. Home made ones previously here was to die for hope they come back when they have more staff. Don’t let other n Comments put u off because it’s by far best in area despite this , great food great price great place

Went for Sunday lunch . It was busy and they found us a table as we hadn’t booked . Staff were all really nice . However ! Sunday lunch . The beef was beautiful . That’s it . Plate was full of peas and carrots . Bit of cauliflower. Frozen roast potatoes frozen Yorkshire pudding and what we think was a frozen stuffing ball . ! Don’t go out for Sunday lunch to be served frozen food . And it was very noticeable . Sorry won’t be back

Just what you need after a walk in the countryside, a welcoming pub with good food. The special's board has salmon in white wine, which was amazingly good, and the straightforward fish and chips were beautifully cooked, hot and promptly served. Good range of bears, I had Yorkshire pride, plus wines. We were a bit late getting there, so missed out on a desert - they stop taking orders at 2.30.

The food at this establishment is excellent, great value and service, the lasagne is very tasty, complimented with fresh salad and chips, in my opinion the best ever. Just hope nothing changes here, because they’ve nailed it , great food great prices. The light bites are fab and generous, I’m trying the 🐟 fish and 🍟 chips on my next visit. Great staff working hard , well done 🙏

A warm welcome received to a lovely old pub next to the marina. A very delicious and reasonably priced light bite lunch. For a lite bite the portion size was excellent. Compliments to the chef for first class food. Lovely staff, friendly service.

We call here week in week out and there is one member of staff JAYA who goes above and beyond her duties as bar staff. The food is always excellent and never had a problem.

Our first visit to a public house in over a year. All precautions are in place and on this occasion we just had a drink, however seeing the food we’re already planning a return visit for lunch in the near future.

Been going to new inn for last 18 months had breakfast lunch and evening meal there it excellent always good food never had a bad meal here always good value for money highly recommend it

After a long walk along the canal we called in for a coffee. We didn't eat though the food looked okay. We sat outside which seemed a bit tired and in need of some TLC, a bit scruffy.

Usually love this place we come all the time for many years but completely let down recently. We brought family here in the week and they didn’t do the gov scheme off properly our bill and had to keep chasing them for change and our order. Then it took three hours to be served, eat and leave as service was really slow we had to keep chasing them as they didn’t come to us after half an hour even to take our order outside. We came back later in the week as a couple for lunch and the older gentleman taking our order he took our drink order but still 20 mins later we noticed he was still taking others orders too and ignored us then we asked for a menu and he didn’t bring any so we asked a lady to bring us one as you can’t just get one as Covid. She was brill then the same gentleman waiting on our table we asked for sauces and again he ignored us just said yes ok. When our food arrived we asked someone else and he was really good he got them to the table as one vinegar for two peoples chips not enough so thank you I dont know your name with fair hair and glasses you were brill. Really not good enough the gentleman who seemed to be the eldest one as shocking customer service from him.

Today we were in Shardlow to go to the Marina and thought we’d drop in to the New Inn for tea before heading home. We had stopped a few weeks earlier and had nice food and a great pint of London Pride, so thought we would return. We preferred to sit outside as caring for my 88yr old dad in a few days and have our own health problems so are being careful due to Covid. As it was a bit chilly we asked if any space inside and although busy the lady serving us found a table inside. Although the social distancing was very well observed inside the dining area we were a bit nervous as hadn’t been into a pub/restaurant for months and asked if it was ok if we went back out. We said we would be sitting waiting in our vehicle as it was a bit chilly. The waiter came to find us to bring us our food. We would like to recommend the New Inn as the food , scampi and chilli, and the very helpful and patient staff were excellent. This is only the third time we’ve ever been in the New Inn but will return and would recommend to others. The staff are great, the food is very nice and good portions and the ales very well kept. Thanks.

Wow waited 14 weeks of lockdown to come here for a Sunday lunch again and it was worth it ,food excellent, service spot on,safety systems in place are perfectly set out and well implemented,felt safe and secure here and will definitely be back , in fact we are coming for steak night on Thursday next great value 2 10oz steaks and a bottle of wine £26 can’t wait Well done Faye &Martin and good luck in these troubled times

Perfect pub grub, just what we needed for a walk, food and a pint. Definitely going back as more to try from the large menu.

Just had the best steak and mushroom pie ever with perfect vegetables cooked to perfection would recommend it to anyone.

The place to go for good food at reasonable prices the drinks are a bit on the pricey side though, so not a drinking pub in your book confine it to the food

Arranged to meet a retired chum there for a mid-week pint. Had a nice little walk there, and felt the need for food. Lunch menu was just right - nothing too big, nothing too frou-frou. I enjoyed my stilton chicken stack, and DC enjoyed his soup. Beers were excellent...all in all very happy with the visit.Will be happy to return. (Can't think of any single bad point.)

We booked a table for 4 people for lunch. On arrival, our booked table was occupied by 4 other people despite our name being on there, however we was given another table.I ordered the Liver & Onions from the ‘Specials Board’, one of my favourite meals, but it was really disappointing. I think I must have had the bottom of the pan as it was served over mashed potato and was closer to mince than Liver, with just a couple of pieces of Liver about an inch long, I don’t remember Liver being served liked that ever.On the plus side, my friend had Braised Steak and it was excellent, and all meals came in hearty portions.Beware of the drink prices too. Two half pint glasses of coke, a pint of Shandy and a fruit juice came to £12.25, pretty steep by any standards for this type of establishment.We will probably call in again, but maybe something different from the menu.

Went out for Sunday Lunch and was pleasantly surprised with the friendly service and great roasts on offer. Good Beer and Good Food in a friendly Pub by the Canal. We will be visiting again.

Hubby had the full dinner with 2 meats, the chicken was a full portion on slices the beef was very thick and he said it melted in the mouth. I had a lovely fresh crispy prawn salad with homemade coleslaw, all very nice. This is a traditional old style pub, dog friendly and with nice staff, in a great position next to the canal. Well worth a visit

We decided to come and have a drink down here with a few friends after one of them had been raving about it, it lived up to the expectations. This place is a proper pub! The location is fantastic and you couldn’t get a prettier view. The staff were incredibly friendly and sorted out any issues straight away! To say this pub was in an incredible location, the high prices and snobby attitude didn’t match, what a fantastic place. We sat down with our drinks and got talking to other costumers, always happy to chat to others, everyone that was in the pub were so lovely. We ordered some food but I wasn’t that hungry so I had a baguette, it was so nice, I recommend any of the baguettes for that price!! Best experience I’ve had in a pub in a long time plus the amazing view!!

Excellent quality breakfast, very welcoming pub / restaurant by the canal. Beer prices a little steep, but location makes up for this.

Great food, wide range of ales and ciders. Good value too. Welcoming atmosphere makes you feel at home. Service can sometimes be little slow, but it is often really busy.

This pub was chosen as a convenient place for four of us to meet for dinner. By chance it was also quiz night - and we love a good quiz! - so we reserved a table to be sure of getting seats. Good thing as it was very popular. We arrived early, our table was already waiting, and the ladies behind the bar were very welcoming. Between us we ordered the New Inn platter for two (enormous - perhaps enough for four!) and two of the vegetarian specials. All very tasty and reasonably priced. Some unusual real ales on offer too. Will definitely return.

Went for meal. But after sitting outside, decided against it. Very dirty. Used cutlery on floor. Dirty tables and umbrellas so low difficult to get under.

So, visited here with my 2 children tonight. Lovely canal side location. Extensive menu with many norman meals also offered on the 'light bite' option for those not wanting such a large meal. Ordered a steak for myself and my son....gorgeous!! Cooked to perfection...thank you. My little girl ordered off the childs menu, but being fussy changed a few bits. It was no problem at all though.

Lovely homemade food, the portions are huge and the quality of food great for the price, no microwave rubbish!! Great location especially when the sun is shining!! Get some New Zealand Sauvignon though and it would be perfect!! Highly recommend!!

Went here with the family great place got everything good food good ales nice outside by the canal sky sports friendly staff. We went o. Steak night had a couple of sirloins cooked to perfection. We will definitely be going back.

Location is lovely which is just as well because this pub wouldn't stay in business long without the beautiful location.

I popped here for a couple of drinks and a bite to eat, the food was lovely & homemade. The beer tastes good as well, service was good. Excellent value and a lovely location by the canal. A must for those summer nights.

My hubby took me here for lunch on Saturday 13 April. There was an excellent choice on the menu and a lot of specials on the board, The staff were very friendly and the two young lads waiting on were lovely and attentive. I had the fish and chips and hubby had sausage and mash which were both delicious. Will definitely be back for another visit.

Stopped off here for lunch by chance on our way south. Good choice of food and reasonably priced. We both had light bites and thank goodness, there was so much of it we'd never have managed a full size portion. Our dog was welcome in the bar.

Outstanding food which was all very warm and delicious, all staff were very welcoming and friendly.In such an amazing spot to sit outside and watch the boats go by, had such a amazing time will definitely be visiting again soon.Also dog friendly.

We use to eat here regularly a few years ago and decided to give it a go today Tuesday 2nd April 2019. Wasnt too busy when we arrived but there were many table already reserved. We got a table alright. the menu was really good with lots of choices plus a specials board. prices were good. The food wasnt too long in arriving, was really hot and fresh and tasted really good.

Went there today as we’ve moved into the area. It was a beautiful afternoon and we’d ordered a few drinks. The service received by a barmaid was terrible. Not welcoming and very rude. I asked if I could order a dessert and was told no as I hadn’t ordered a main. Having spent over £30 in the pub I thought this was outrageous. When I asked why I was informed it was the policy of the pub only to serve desserts to those who had ordered a main. The pub was t that busy so I didn’t understand why. The rude barmaid offered no further explanation. Why have a menu if one can’t order from it? If it’s a policy of the pub why is not clear? My personal opinion is the barmaid couldn’t be bothered and as I was the only person of colour in the place I believe It could have been her way of asserting her authority. Left me feeling not welcome and I would not recommend the pub to anyone because of this.

Popped in for a drink on the way through shardlow and was well impressed, lovely atmosphere, happy friendly staff and good range of beers What else do you need ?

Nicely situated next to the canal with a car park, the New Inn has an atmospheric traditional feel, with TV in the bar area. Dogs are made very welcome A good range of cask beers plus a few real ales are stocked.

In a really nice location, very friendly, food was lovely with generous portions and good value for money. Very well organised and dog's allowed to. Will go back.

This was without a doubt the worst breakfast we have ever had. They gave a new meaning to crozzled bacon! Cremated so it was unrecognisable. The plate was swmimming in grease as was the mushrooms. The sausages were of the lowest quality and should have been labelled meat free. When the young fella asked if everything was ok with breakfast we were polite and said “ actually, no it wasn’t very nice at all and really greasy” he said “sorry” and that was that! The staff carried on with their chat and we left with no further approach from the staff!! Won’t be going there again!!

Have been to this place a number of times and the quality of the food is consistently very good and more 'home cooked' than most pubs. Good beers and a warm atmosphere

Came here on a Monday evening, and it wasn't very busy so we had a choice of seats. The pub is nice, and the service was good. The food portions are huge, which I was very happy with! If you are a vegetarian like me, then they have a specials board just for Vegetarians, which when went, there were about 3 or 4 choices to choose from. One lady complained sat next to us about the way her lasagna was presented, and the barmaid dealt with it very well. Would recommend, and would come again - although I would sit further away from the door as the draft does come through and it was cold frequently!

Just called in for drinks when exploring the area. A very friendly traditional pub that does a good range of beer and although we didn't eat on this occasion will be on our list next time we are the area. The food being served looked really good and the bar was busy with diners. A dog friendly pub in a great location.

We actually ate here twice on one day as the food was good and also good value for money. Service was quick and efficient even through it was reasonably busy on each visit. We would recommend the New Inn and would return if we are in the area again.

Recommended by people on shardlow marina camp site! Sunday lunch was nice but didn’t excite me, most of my party ordered the chicken in cheese sauce as did the majority of the pub so I tried my friends and I can see why! It was delicious! Certainly one I would recommend

We went for lunch at this lovely pub. All the food is home made and you can really tell by how lovely it is. The menu is huge and caters for everyone.

Nice walk along the canal and a few drinks sat outside in the sun shine with our dog making friends with other doggies and their owners. The baggettes were lovely and very generous portions. Would go again, only downside drinks a bit pricey

We regularly visit the New Inn for Saturday morning breakfast, we recently visited on a sunny Saturday evening. It’s lovely to sit outside watching the Canal boats passing by whilst enjoying a drink,we decided to try the Sharing platter for 2 and we weren’t disappointed at only £13 there’s plenty and it’s cooked to perfection well worth a visit.
