The little skewers were nice. The lemon sole and ravioli special were satisfyinf and tasty dishes, but the mackeral was very ordinary and the crab souufle was disappointingly small. The menu offers mackeral with aubergines, but the amount of aubergines was derisory. The crab accompaniment of leeks was a thimblefull, and one should request a magnifying glass to find the tomatoes with the potatoes. The worst was the cider - we ordered half pints and got tiny portions in wine glasses. My guest is a member of the gourmet Food Writers' Guild and even she was surprised by the meanness. The service was OK, but not worth the fixed charge of 12.5%.

I came here late on a Friday with a bunch of (around 30) colleagues from a circus production company. The place only had 1 member of staff serving as they had sent the others home because it was quiet (prior to our arrival). Have to say that the guys serving us dealt with the sudden influx of theatre folk brilliantly. Everyone had an excellent few hours here and the cocktails were ace.

We came at 11:45 and they'd already run out of cheese scones. Went to sit outside and every table was covered in dirty dishes and left over food. There is a sign that says do not feed the birds but the tea shop is actively feeding them as the swans are helping themselves from the tables which could endanger their health. I had to clear and wipe my own table and after I'd used some of the milk I discovered the inside of the jug was dirty

Very kindly provided us with a cup of tea despite the fact that they were looking to close up at lunchtime. This is a small but very nice quiet place to relax and browse.

The place looks beautiful but the food is extremely disappointing. My friends and I were expecting a nice, warm, gourmet selection of meals to choose from for lunch, unfortunately, this 'restaurant' serves cafe menus... English breakfast, sandwiches and burgers was pretty much all there was on offer. There was a salad, which promised to be a variation on my favourite, Greek one but turned out to be, without any exaggeration, a bowl of shredded lettuce with 5 chunks of feta and a couple of slices of melon, no taste or flavour to it and no Greek salad association other than the cheese. My friends all left their food half eaten too. Don't even get me started on asking to move the table when you are seated in the most inappropriate area one could possibly imagine, next to an ordering station, with a constant flow of waiters standing over you... The waitress had a face like I asked to dance naked on the bar in exchange for money, then told me I had to go and look for a manager and sort it out myself. I shan't be visiting again.

Visited recently for the first time and was impressed, no long queues after placing your order like in Costa etc, all staff are young and very helpful & pleasant. This is how a cafe should be run, Yesterday visited the Reading Cafe, same level of service received, we had to amend our order after sitting down, it was no problem for them at all and we were made to feel again nothing is too much trouble. Got home and looked into the Company, they focus on employing the right people & training them. Well done for doing this, your doing the right thing from the top down to the shop floor, If there’s a Boswells near me wherever I am that’s where I will be spending my money. 🙏😁

I love the pathetic negative reviews, this a hidden gem, full of charm. We had the most wonderful breakfast. The sausages are from a local butcher and are amazing as with the rest of it. Yes it's old fashioned. Bit that is what makes it so special. I'm sure most of the people that leave negative reviews have been way to pampered all there lives. So if that's you stick to Costa and Starbucks. After all they need all the money they can get. Then lovely local, family run business will be gone forever.

Excellent place very clean lovely staff nothing was too much bother for them service was very good and so was the meal we had, mine was a lovely breakfast wrap with chips my husband had a small breakfast cooked and served to perfection a big thank you to the chef and of course the wonderful staff especially the kind waitress who very kindly opened the disabled toilet for me. We had not been to Newbury for while but we will be certainly making another visit, and of course making another visit to The Hatchet Inn.
