What a gem ! Great reviews on here so visited twice on a mini break . Ladies who run it are lovely and super friendly . Food cooked to perfection and at a very competitive price . Highly Reccomended !

Love this restaurant! Everything was spot on as always. Wonderful flavours and textures beautifully presented. Timing of the arrival of dishes was perfect allowing enough time to savour the gorgeous food and a little conversation between. Great selection of wines for all budgets. All the staff were polite and professional. Can’t wait to go back. Btw, loved the sourdough soldiers, lobster tortellini special plus the celeriac and apple side. Oh my, the lost bread….

A great place to hang out and watch sport (we watch rugger) on the TVs. Plus they have very good, and reasonably priced pies. All good then

I came here late on a Friday with a bunch of (around 30) colleagues from a circus production company. The place only had 1 member of staff serving as they had sent the others home because it was quiet (prior to our arrival). Have to say that the guys serving us dealt with the sudden influx of theatre folk brilliantly. Everyone had an excellent few hours here and the cocktails were ace.

We came at 11:45 and they'd already run out of cheese scones. Went to sit outside and every table was covered in dirty dishes and left over food. There is a sign that says do not feed the birds but the tea shop is actively feeding them as the swans are helping themselves from the tables which could endanger their health. I had to clear and wipe my own table and after I'd used some of the milk I discovered the inside of the jug was dirty

Very kindly provided us with a cup of tea despite the fact that they were looking to close up at lunchtime. This is a small but very nice quiet place to relax and browse.

Spacious warm comfortable room . Had a good night’s sleep. Staff friendly and helpful. Excellent location.

Chips were appalling absolutely awful had to throw nearly all away fish wasn’t much better the worse I have ever had from this chip pie

I simply want to highlight one part of my visit to this restaurant - the team and the service are amazing..simply the best I've seen in a long while. Everyone who served us (four in total during our stay) was welcoming, had a smile on their face and served our table in a really engaging and friendly manner - terrific performance. Congrats to the management of the business and this team in particular - I can't recommend you highly enough. In this day and age where most restaurants serve good food, the service element makes a real difference and rest assured whenever I need to meet someone in Newbury again - this is where we will be meeting...well done to everyone involved.

Visited recently for the first time and was impressed, no long queues after placing your order like in Costa etc, all staff are young and very helpful & pleasant. This is how a cafe should be run, Yesterday visited the Reading Cafe, same level of service received, we had to amend our order after sitting down, it was no problem for them at all and we were made to feel again nothing is too much trouble. Got home and looked into the Company, they focus on employing the right people & training them. Well done for doing this, your doing the right thing from the top down to the shop floor, If there’s a Boswells near me wherever I am that’s where I will be spending my money. 🙏😁

I love the pathetic negative reviews, this a hidden gem, full of charm. We had the most wonderful breakfast. The sausages are from a local butcher and are amazing as with the rest of it. Yes it's old fashioned. Bit that is what makes it so special. I'm sure most of the people that leave negative reviews have been way to pampered all there lives. So if that's you stick to Costa and Starbucks. After all they need all the money they can get. Then lovely local, family run business will be gone forever.

A great place to meet with friends for a good meal.

This place needs sorting out, getting decent chefs for a start. We had a carvery here and by 7pm they had started to run out of meat, when we got ours we had 1 this bit of gammon and even less turkey. Potatoes were all hard, they must have been there all day. Nothing was fresh, mostly cold. They need to close down and refurb the place and the staff. Its gone right down hill. Felt sorry for the manager, as there were so many complaints.

Excellent place very clean lovely staff nothing was too much bother for them service was very good and so was the meal we had, mine was a lovely breakfast wrap with chips my husband had a small breakfast cooked and served to perfection a big thank you to the chef and of course the wonderful staff especially the kind waitress who very kindly opened the disabled toilet for me. We had not been to Newbury for while but we will be certainly making another visit, and of course making another visit to The Hatchet Inn.
