We came at 11:45 and they'd already run out of cheese scones. Went to sit outside and every table was covered in dirty dishes and left over food. There is a sign that says do not feed the birds but the tea shop is actively feeding them as the swans are helping themselves from the tables which could endanger their health. I had to clear and wipe my own table and after I'd used some of the milk I discovered the inside of the jug was dirty

Cute and quaint tea shop in a beautiful setting by the rivers edge. Beautiful cakes and food. Quick service. Have to be careful of the swans .We saw 3 tables of people lose the lunch off their plates while they were eating it , Swans are beautiful but are intimidating and very bold. One swan sat at my elbow for my entire meal. I had an awkward lunch where he hissed at me all the time I sat there.

Lovely setting but expensive. While since I’ve been, lovely setting next to canal, go to cafes in Newbury regularly & this is particularly expensive. £5 for a slice of cake! £17 for 2 slices of cake, a tea & a latte, nice place for visitors, but as a local I’d rather use one of the many other independent cafes

Gorgeous Birthday Afternoon Tea! What a fabulous treat, everything homemade & so delicious 😋 especially the scones & sandwiches! Such a pretty tea shop beautifully decorated. Our table was gorgeous with pretty teacups & saucers all laid out ready to use. Staff very welcoming & smily. We visited the Ritz in London 2 weeks ago & told the staff this was so much more enjoyable! Thank you for making my daughters birthday so enjoyable.🩷🌸

After a relaxing walk along the canal path, the Teashop is perfectly placed with plenty of outdoor seating and a great range of cakes, brunch dishes, teas and coffees. We enjoyed a coffee and cake watching the comings and goings on the canal. We were impressed by the excellent service, fast but also very friendly. We are not local, but would definitely revisit if we were in Newbury again.

We were recommended to this absolute gem by my friend’s sister as a treat for my friend’s birthday, and we can’t recommend it highly enough. It sits right on the backs of the canal, on the edge of the public library car park in Newbury, with outdoor seating and lots of swans 🦢. Quite small inside so book if you want to guarantee a seat. Stunning stone building with beautiful and well thought through decor - we loved the flower wall. Afternoon tea is fabulous! Important to note that my friend needs gluten-free and dairy-free options, which can be of dubious quality at some places. No such concerns here!! All of their bread, cakes etc are home made. According to my friend, this was some of the best she had ever tasted. Both were beautifully presented and lovingly put together. Real effort and artistry. I can testify to the fact that the standard one was equally delicious with generous portions. Absolutely beautiful food in both presentation and taste. Service was charming and friendly. We can’t praise this place highly enough - thank you so much for the warm welcome. We left feeling happily full and took a walk along the tow path in the sun up finish off the afternoon.

Another delicious afternoon tea here yesterday, this time I went with my parents who were also really impressed with the food and service. A plentiful portion, with plenty to go around - we had to take some cakes home. All the cakes are homemade and very tasty, they even make their own jam! The sandwiches are also lovely, with tasty and generous fillings. The crisps and salad are also a nice touch. Despite being very busy, the service was great, and the top up of tea was brought across swiftly when we asked for it. Such a lovely place, with brilliant food and drink options, friendly service and a beautiful setting - close to the canal and the shops. Will definitley be visiting again next time I'm in/ near Newbury.

I booked the John Gould room above the tea shop for my daughters hen party & ordered afternoon tea for all 21 of us served by the tea shop staff. When I arrived the tables were set out in an L shape as I’d requested and adorned with quaint teacups and plates. Once everyone was seated Florina took our drinks orders. So many types of teas. Also coffees & cold drinks were offered. Then the food started arriving- wow so many sandwiches and cakes and of course a scone with a pot of jam & cream! The service was fantastic, nothing too much trouble and the food - all homemade. Also allergies were catered for. We were offered take home boxes free of charge. The tea shop is situated right on the canal bank, surrounded by ducks & swans. Lots of photos were taken & an afternoon thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you again to Florina and her team x Will definitely go back.

If you don’t know anything about food, or enjoy good, or even any service, this place is fine. To the owner: Mashing up avocado and putting it on un-toasted bread is not a thing, and is definitely not nice. What’s the best way to finish off a salad? NOT with a tablespoon of dried parsley. When serving tea, it’s good manners to serve tea, and not water with one tea leaf in it. As a lover of cakes, yours are dry and bland. Instruct your staff to: Wipe down tables Actually ask how peoples meals are When watching your customers struggling with a huge tray of bland tea and cake not able to fit it onto the table since it’s got the old plates of food still on it, and seeing that the other member of the table is holding onto two dogs… when watching that, DO NOT avert your gaze and find one table amongst multiple empty tables and take off the one plate that is on it and walk away. Any by the way, why are your customers being made to bring their own trays of food to their tables? Especially when things are quiet? If you live in this area, the ONLY reason you’d ever go here is because it’s right on the canal. This place is trading solely on one-time customers and potentially regulars who just like the canal. You would not hold up against basically any other tea shop I’ve ever been to. It takes a lot for me to write something like this, but this is by far the worst experience in a long time. And since you’re not exactly cheap either, I know what it feels like to be conned. So thanks for nothing.

We always come here when we're passing through Newbury. It's by the canal, which is an obvious plus, but the food is made fresh and you can really taste the difference. Heck, you can smell the difference even before you taste it. I think my soup was red pepper and parsnip - I can certainly remember the smell of red pepper rising up from it. It tasted as good as it smelt. The cafe (sensibly for a small cafe) doesn't do a wide range of meals, but it does a small number very well. Simple, but effective. They make their own cakes too... It always has something tasty for vegetarians. And proper tea served in a proper teapot! With a good range of types of tea, including their own blend. (China rose, I think...) It's small, it's friendly, and it's helping raise money for the Canal Trust. How could I not like it?

The people who work there are very nice and the location itself is great (cute decor inside, river views outside, just very welcoming and relaxed, not pretentious), but the best thing is how flexible they are about dietary needs! If you need gluten-free or vegan or allergy-friendly options, they make it super easy (and everything is delicious) so no one in your group is left out or has to eat inferior food. There's wonderful coffee for anyone who's not into tea. It's also dog friendly! There's really something for everyone. My personal favorite are the scones - some of the best I've had.

£46 for 6 tiny pieces of sandwich, a sliver of cake, tea, two scones and a macaron seems a bit rich to me. That’s two good roast dinners in a decent gastro pub! Over priced, dry disappointing “toasted” sandwich. Ordered a cheese ham and pickle toastie at nearly £7.00 (which hardly reflects a tea rooms prices) I thought I’d give it a try though. It was awful, no pickle, no butter, the only thing slightly toasted was the bread. Awful flat white, drink tasted off. My party also ordered bacon sandwiches, bacon was cremated and dry, ketchup was an “extra” that was paid for but did not end up on the sandwiches. Would not return if you paid me.

Got a refund and left. Shame. Clearly they are punching above their weight. Premium prices, superb location, super cakes but a total let down if the staff can't serve you. We all accept that the pandemic creates queues, but if you offer so many tables, you should be able to serve. It would also be reassuring if the staff wore their face coverings properly. Hanging off their ear and not covering their nose or mouth is somewhat pointless.

Whilst the drinks and cake were nice, I’m afraid to say that the overall experience was poor.It took 40 minutes for us to receive a flat white, a tea and two shortbread slices. The staff didn’t seem to know what was going on at all. Our friends had also ordered and were still waiting some 40 minutes too and when this was questioned at the counter, they were told that someone had bought their order out (which we had witnessed and the boy serving had sandwiches etc on his plate, which they didn’t order) and that it was THEIR fault! Their card machine was down when we arrived, but they had 5 staff on and weren’t overrun, so I’m not sure it’s an excuse. There was no urgency or system in place and it just seemed to be a bit hit and miss.I’d heard good things about the tea shop, but sadly it seemed as though either it was under new staffing/management or that we were extremely unlucky.

The Teashop by the Canal is normally my favourite place to go.I recommended to all my friends and it is a lovely spot away from town (although there is a busy traffic bridge nearby and it is next to a car park which is actually a bonus for me). If you have allergies, or need to use the toilet, please consider this review. The toilet is closed and I was signposted to the public toilets costing 20p across x 2 carparks. Not only poor customer service, no signs, but it doesn't take into account allergies, hygiene or disability. I'm not even sure it's legal to close a toilet with above 10 tables. The service was also poor, the food was OK. Our cakes came out way before our sandwiches and the wasps were doing their best to munch on them. Our table was cleared and cleaned whilst our food was on the table, 30 mins after arrival. All in all, great location, everything else lacking and until they pick themselves up following these changes I will try somewhere else, another independent. I appreciate it gets busy, that covid has had an impact and independents need support. However the general experience was sadly poor. Of course, you can make up your own mind. I will certainly try again in the future. Happy cake eating wherever you go.

The location by the canal is nice, and it gives the people of Newbury a very nice spot away from the high street and the market - which pre-Covid must have been busy. The Tea Shop building is very pretty but it’s located on the edge of a car park, and there is a busy bridge that runs over the canal adjacent to the Tea Shop.We were initially enticed by some of the photos we had seen here on Trip Advisor, but unfortunately the cakes that had tempted us were not available and the location was not as sedate as we had expected. That said, it was a nice sunny day and we made the best of it. We had a lemon drizzle cake and a walnut cake. It was hot day and so we had two cold drinks to accompany them.Given the simplest of orders we still had to wait for the food to arrive. The lemon drizzle was moist and rather good. Light and moist. However, the walnut cake was dry and would have benefited from a much higher cream to cake ratio.Overall, a rather average experience that was reminiscent of a visit to one of the tea rooms or cafeterias used to exist in our local parks. A nice place to rest and have a cuppa & a chat - but not special.Note to self, “just because a cake is homemade doesn’t mean it’s the always going to be good.”

Took a friend here for a bite to eat. When we first arrived, there were about 7-8 free tables, but all had yet to be cleared. With covid-19 challenges, thought nothing of it. However, despite a very simple order of 2 ham and cheese toasted sandwiches, we waited nearly 30 mins. By the time they arrived, our coffees were very tepid. To make matters worse, the sandwiches are extortionately priced at £6 each. Essentially, we had about 4 slices of a small loaf so the mark up was huge. I assume there has been a markup because of the current business conditions. I'm happy to pay over the odds if the ambience and service warrants it. However, it was not warranted and I wouldn't return.

My wife and I had breakfast here for the first time in ages during January 2020. We enjoyed all the food we had (two of their breakfast dishes - see photos). And we enjoyed our time here more than on the previous occasion (when we hadn't even been served!). But there are still issues. Although there were only two other customers in the teashop when we arrived, and our order was taken fairly quickly, it did take quite a long time for our food to arrive. We had a coffee while waiting for that food. But the coffees here are *so small* that we'd finished them ages before the food arrived, so we had to order *another* coffee each. (In these days, when barista coffees come in such large sizes at the usual coffee outlets, the tiny coffees served here just aren't enough! So being charged £2.50 per caffe latte isn't fun when one feels one has to order more than one for each person). Next, their electronic device for charging one's credit card just *doesn't work properly* - we had to wait for fifteen minutes for it to get its act together. Whatever the cause of that problem, it was deeply unimpressive. Finally, and again comparing this place to every other place serving tea or coffee in Newbury (and the Western world), there's no wifi here at all. Another disappointing feature, then.

Had breakfast here on a Sunday morning. Knew nothing about it in advance so we were very pleasantly surprised. It's lovely inside, the menu is really good, and the breakfast was excellent, served with good coffee, and a really welcoming team. Good value too.

Not only lovely to visit on a beautiful sunny day to sit beside the water to watch the swans, ducks, and boats go by, but lovely cosy warm cafe to visit in the cold winter days. Amazing homemade cakes and friendly staff, exceptional character cafe.

We had planned to have an afternoon tea at this lovely little café while visiting Newbury. We decided to go for a quick lunch, a couple days before the planned afternoon tea. Well, it was a good thing we did, since we didn’t get to go back for afternoon tea… Just as the name suggests, it is located right by the canal. It was very picturesque, peaceful and relaxing. They also have seating upstairs, and had histories on the canal, with photos posted all around the wall. Their cakes looked amazing, but I decided not to order any dessert on this day. Yes I know, a big mistake! Our friend ordered Heavenly Hot Chocolate, and it looked so pretty! We went with Teashop House Blend Tea, and Earl Grey. The young boy who brought the teas (I hear this is a family-run business) was trying to very careful not to mix them up. But the funny thing was, he totally mixed the tea up! LOL. We didn’t realize until half way through… I thought the House Blend tea tasted so much like Earl Grey. For lunch, we had Ham, Cheese & Chutney Sandwich and Eggs Benedict. They were both tasty, nice portion, and filling. Our friend went with something healthier, and ordered one of their vegan sandwiches. It is nice to have that option if you want or need vegan dish. We had a nice quick lunch here. It was adorable and cozy. The food was good, not amazing, but good. I think the sweets might be better than the actual food…I will never know, unless I go back! Lesson learned: don’t never expect your plan to go just the way you planned them…and have your dessert first!

We stopped off here on a particularly cold day in December and rather than wait in a windy bus station for our journey home decided to take a little sustenance at the Teashop. We just had time for a welcome warming cup of real coffee each and shared a hunk of real old fashioned homemade Bread Pudding. This was on a par if not even better than the Pudding traybake made by by my grandmother in the forties and fifties with a surfeit of fruit perfectly baked and moist yet substantial and filling. The teashop is characterful and individual with an array of homemade goodies so well worth investigating and convenient for the canal, town centre and bus station also convenient for the museum, and library with a carpark directly outside. In line with current trend no receipt given -unless asked for -so helps save paper- but our refreshments came to approx £7.60

I was one of a coach load of passengers and we stopped for a short while in Newbury- and what good luck that was as I found the Tea Shop by the Canal.A really delightful little gem of a place where one can enjoy civilised surroundings and excellent fare. The young waitresses were all charming and seemd to enjoy their jobs and has been said the extra bonus of being able to drink delicius tea from beautiful china cups. So lovely to be back in the world where people cared about giving others pleasure. Thankyou and all good wishes to you for the future.Penelope Trevose-Clowe.

I have been to this café several times for lunch with my nephew in the last few weeks. The staff are friendly and very helpful and the food is very good. The Darjeeling tea in vintage china is a definite plus. The cakes look delicious too!

We are now regulars here. Excellent little cafe. In the good weather, you can sit outside looking across the canal to Victoria park. On a colder day, sitting available inside. But very limited seating I side. Great retro decor.

Often passed this quirky Grade II listed tearoom whilst walking/sitting by the canal but yesterday finally succumbed and stopped for a snack lunch. We shared a granary Salmon and cucumber sandwich with tomato and crisps side which proved satisfying for us and very attractive to the wasps sitting outside admiring the canalside scene with barges, kayaks geese and Swans.Fortunately the staff told us that wasps dislike cucumber

What a lovely quaint little tea shop, we stumbled across this after visiting Newbury town and wanted some lunch, we’d walked through the nearby Victoria park and saw people sat enjoying some food and drinks by the canal side, the tea shop is some part of the old canal wharf and is a very old building, it’s lovely inside and out with plenty of tables and chairs. The choice of food is plentiful and very tasty, the tea is served in a pot with proper tea leaves and a strainer, wonderful way to serve proper English tea.

This little cafe is a traditional 'afternoon tea shop' sitting on Newbury Wharf, with outside seating along the canal bank.Inside its a little flowery and pink, but staff are friendly and hard working and the atmosphere is cozy. Prices are reasonable and meals appear to be good value. Upstairs, the walls are showing a picture map of the kennett & Avon Canal with lots of interesting info, which I really enjoyed reading.

We just like it here , proper old fashioned tea shop right down to the tea strainer. Went here for a full English breakfast last week ,good ingredients and well cooked ( slightly slow service and a little on the cold side ), but we enjoyed it all the same . Its still a lovely place to go ,and we will be back !

This coffee shop serves lunches etc but we were just having coffee And yummy yummy homemade cake. Inside is quaint and pretty with a lovely rose petal wall but if the weather is fine it’s the outside tables that are the big attraction. Sitting by the canal looking over to the park as swans swim past...perfection!

You can get a variety of meals here, we just about managed to resist the yummy looking cakes but it was a struggle! There are a variety of teas available, loose leaf in a teapot - so don’t forget to use the strainer. A nice touch was the timer you are given with the tea so that you can judge when it is strong enough for you, I hate weak tea so went for the green sand.

Lovely sunny garden with plenty of seating and shade. Excellent varied menu from which I chose the smoked salmon and then a ribeye steak. My partner had pigeon and then monk fish all of which arrived piping hot and was very tasty - we cleared our plates! Definitely would recommend this pub both for a drink and for food. The garden is lovely, they are dog friendly and the interior has had a stylish makeover which makes sitting inside a pleasure

A great place for a Sunday roast. The teepee out the back is huge (at least the size of the pub itself) and well worth taking a look at if not having a drink or two in it in very comfortable seats/sofas. There are two large screens in there to watch sport and on a match night would be a great atmosphere.

I came here late on a Friday with a bunch of (around 30) colleagues from a circus production company. The place only had 1 member of staff serving as they had sent the others home because it was quiet (prior to our arrival). Have to say that the guys serving us dealt with the sudden influx of theatre folk brilliantly. Everyone had an excellent few hours here and the cocktails were ace.
