I have gone to the this pub many times and always have great exprience. The bar staff are always friendly and very helpful. Both Mikey and Doug have served me and they are a credit to the team. Always ready to help customers with any issues. Would reccomend the elephant the elephant to anyone. One of the best places to drink or get food in Newbury

Nice place but deceiving drinks menu so be careful. It’s not clear that the 2-for-1 cocktails deal only applies to those with a star in the menu. The requirement of which is hidden at the bottom of the drinks menu and not with the promotion. Also the promotion contains an image of a mojito which itself is not included in the deal. Very misleading. Really deceptive and a shame as it lets down the entire place and ruined our trip accidentally ordering two Aperol Spritz only to pay for both. Watch out for other misleading offers and menu items. Edit: I want to also add that when ordering I specifically asked for the 2-for-1 cocktail deal but the bartender did not point out the Aperol Spritz did not qualify.

He took one order, then disappeared without giving the remaining two an opportunity to give their orders, they then had to ask to order on his return with the one drink. The food order was taken promptly and service was also within a reasonable timeframe. On clearing the mains, desserts were offered and so we proceeded to look over the menu only for the waiter to return a few minutes later to advise us ‘you can’t have dessert as the kitchen is closed’. Shortly after, we were presented with the bill. There was no apology and we were not informed of a closing time of the kitchen during our visit. Having worked in hospitality, standard practice is to keep the kitchen open for remaining courses for those already dining. The whole experience was lacking in customer service and sadly I will not be returning anytime soon

The best place to stop by, have a bite to eat in Newbury. Hidden gem next to the Corn Exchange, lovely food even better drinks! The service is definitely five stars, from Mikelay, Kile, Alfie, Ashlyn and Brandon, you know it’s always service with a smile! Thank you guys

Came in for a meal with my partner to celebrate moving to the area. Served by Kyle who took amazing care of us and spent the time after his shift finished going through local attractions and what's good to do in the area. The pizzas are amazing and Kyles drink recommendations really topped it off. Doug on the bar really knew how to make delicious cocktails andbyhe team that took over belive, they where called Brandon and Ollie really finished the evening of nicely. Will definitely recommend and definitely be back. Maybe mynnee local!!!

Lovely venue, the staff are fabulous and well knowledgeable on the items they are selling and even personal recommendations to try. The food is simple but tasty and very reasonably priced. I come quite regularly and the entire team are very enthusiastic and always go the extra mile. Mikele, Brandon, Tylan, Alfie, Ashlyn and Jess are expecially welcoming. Will continue to come back in the future

Brandon was our waiter and he looked after us and 4 children really well. Food came out really quickly and we all enjoyed our food. Would definitely come again

Absolutely brilliant! We had a large party of 29 for Dinner. Not only was all of the food delicious the staff were incredible, the whole evening ran like clock work. Every meal was correct, the timings, the seating - everything first class. I would recommend the Elephant at the Market in Newbury to anyone of any age! Brilliant night at the Elephant, thank you guys, quiz night was an added bonus!

We had dinner here for 4 people, all of us ordered one main and we ordered 3 drinks. The total on the bill came to almost £90, which were were shocked by because the price of the main meal we ordered was £16.95 each. What we didn't realise is that the waiter had listed us a bunch of options for our meals without making it clear there was an additional charge, making the whole bill significantly more expensive. Had we known these options were charged extra we would have not opted for them. We also asked for tap water for the table, but then we were given a overpriced bottled water. I wouldn't have minded so much about the prices if the food quality was good but the chicken wasn't crispy, and the fries which we paid extra for simply had some sauce poured on them that tasted like a standard sweet chilli sauce from the supermarket. Overall we could have had the same dish served in whetherspoons for half the price and it would have had crispy chicken. We only came in because we had a discount from compare the market however even with the 25% off, I still think we massively overpaid for the meal. We did tip 15% but after looking at the bill closer we wished we hadn't added a tip. Edit: We ordered from large plates section and our meal was meant to come with skinny fries, server asked us " would you like that with skinny fries, chunky fries or angry fries" we asked what angry fries are because we didn't know, he said they had some spicy sauce on, nothing about an extra cost. I rechecked the menu and on the large plates section there is no clear pricing regarding chip upgrades or how much it costs to add the angry fries, it doesn't even appear to be an option on there. Considering we didn't know what the fries were it should imply that the server should have been upfront about additional charges.

The pub in Newbury with so much heart! I recently visited on a Wednesday evening, and the staff were brilliant. Kyle put me at complete ease, recommending the lightest red wine I have ever had at an establishment. What an exceptional waiter! The staff are very friendly and very accommodating which gives a warm atmosphere. Will definitely visit again!

Lovely pub I visited on my way through to the station. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Served by Doug and Brandon. Spent a good while talking to Doug about whiskey. We both agree you should get a few more if you can!

Mid-week visit so there were not many other customers which we appreciated. The staff were amazing! Friendly and funny, they had initiative and respect in abundance. The food and drinks not only looked amazing but tasted amazing as well!

Had a really restful stay at The Elephant the room was clean and cosy and had a great night’s sleep. Enjoyed a lovely meal for dinner and loved the 2-4-1 cocktails too. The team looked after me really well and nothing was too much trouble. The venue itself is beautiful and thought all the elephant ornaments dotted and hidden around the bar was a nice touch. I’ll definitely be back.

Had a lovely Sunday roast , staff very professional and friendly , been here quite a few times now for dinner and have never had a bad meal compliments to the chef and staff exceptional jobs well done keep up the good work 😀

We had booked a table for a meeting at 10am. the manager could see us stood outside in the rain and let us in early. then even though food wasn't being served in the main restaurant as the hotel kitchen was still operating offered us the option for breakfast, which we all gratefully took. Lovely venue, lovely staff, will definitely recommend

While my wife and I didn't stay, we did partake in the pub fare as a fun outing for the two of us. The place was wonderful and clean, perfect for a lil "date" sort of outing. The staff was really friendly as well. We got to interact with Ollie, who was a delight. I'm always out looking for good food to try and this was a great place to find it! The small plates are awesome and the 2 for 1 cocktails were just what we needed. Thanks for a great experience!

Rates are quite reasonable, and the staff are very friendly and attentive, especially Ollie! The small plates and 2-for-1 cocktails were the favorites of my wife and I while we were here! If you're considering a visit, definitely make Elephant at the Market your first stop.

Myself and my partner had the pleasure of staying here yesterday. As soon as we walked in the door we were greeted with friendly, polite staff. The room was very nice and had a big comfortable bed. We also enjoyed a very tasty evening meal. We came down for breakfast and once again were greeted by friendly staff. All in all aa wonderful experience. I would definitely recommend The Elephant at the Market

Housekeeping had not refilled the soap bottles in the bathroom consequently I have to go and see the duty manager with the empty bottles and he refilled them for me

Me and my partner stayed in the hotel for a night. The pub is good but unfortunately the rooms let it down. There is hardly any hot water. I wanted a bath but it wasn’t warm enough. The furniture was falling apart. There was dirty towels in the wardrobe and the bath robes were just flung on the floor.

We popped in briefly for a dessert after a lovely meal, and received amazing service from Kyle, who came over with a lovely smile and perfect customer service skills! ❤️ Doug was also amazing and managed to fill our dessert request even though the kitchen was closed! Would definitely recommend!! :)

Me and my partner stayed in the hotel for a night. The restaurant looked lovely but unfortunately the room let it down. There is hardly any hot water. My partner was running a bath but the water was not hot enough for him to sit or relax in it. The furniture was falling apart as I went to pull the draw open and then it would not go back in. it also says you have bath robes included and as I opened the wardrobe I looked down and there was dirty bath robes all scrunched up at the bottom along with a dirty towel.

We spent many hours here today to celebrate my birthday and we had a lovely time. Staff were great , food was amazing and it really made for a great day. There were 6 of us and each one of us have said we would be back.

By far the best fish and chips in Newbury! You cannot beat the deliciously light crispy batter, proper chips with just the right amount of crunch and nicely minted mushy pies - served with chunky tartare sauce. We finished with the lovely creamy cheesecake. I honestly could not fault the meal at all. Perfect meal.

This is a strange review because I actually debated with myself giving the hotel 5 stars despite some issues with the room which I will share in the review which is a rare contradiction when reviewing places. We booked two nights for a race weekend at Newbury (which was abandoned :( due to rain) . The location is fantastic for both visiting the town and for going racing with everything within walking distance. The hotel has the great bonus of free, secure parking and cost wise it is very competitive. The rooms are set over the pub which closed at midnight but there were no issues at all with noise. The interior is wonderfully quirky with wonky floors, ceilings and doorways. The room itself was at the rear and was a great size and was clean and comfortable. Here is the issue because the room did have issues with damp and peeling wallpaper. You will see this in the photos but will also see how nice the room was otherwise. The bathroom was fantastic with a great shower and overall we were really happy and would not hesitate to stay here again. Hopefully the owners will sort the damp as it is a shame it colours an otherwise first class hotel. Staff were friendly at all times and although we didn’t try the food the menu looked great. Overall If you are going racing or just visiting Newbury for a weekend I would not put you off staying here at all…the hotels great. It is not ideal if you have issues with stairs as there is no lift but we really enjoyed our stay and we have stayed in 5 different hotels in Newbury on race weekends and this was easily the best.

This is the third time eating at the Elephant in Newbury, twice with family and once dining alone. We think there has been a change in owner as the menu has changed but the food was very good as usual. On this occasion the service was excellent with the lead server (I'm afraid we didn't get her name) proactively asking if our family group wanted to move to a quieter section of the restaurant as we were originally seated near a younger and somewhat boisterous crowd. It was a thoughtful gesture which made for an enjoyable evening. Highly recommended place to eat.

Food and drink ok, staff good. Accommodation terrible! Small worn out rooms. Noisy (but above a pub to be expected) But 7am Sunday morning music on load downstairs I'm assuming cleaners? Headed home.e 8am for a decent sleep .

We stayed for one night and booked the family suite for a couple, plus added the english breakfast option. We were happy with the room size and would recommend spending the extra money if you are in need of more space. The location is great and central to everything in town. We ate dinner & breakfast at the restaurant and thought that the food was delicious. The service was friendly and Michael was wonderful! Plus on Friday nights there is live music and the performer was very enjoyable.

Went yesterday for a friends birthday, waiter was very kind and helpful in recommending food. I got the fish and chips and the macaroni cheese as a side, both were amazing, tried the garlic bread with extra mozzarella which a friend ordered and it was one of the best i've had. Highly recommend

Great atmosphere and friendly staff, perfect garden and delicious food what more can one ask. Definately will be back. Located in the hesrt of Newbury a beautiful market town with plenty to see and do. Walks along the canal and river are a delight.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this very comfortable hotel. It is quirky, with rooms named after Babar characters. The service was friendly and efficient. Perfect for our stay after the races (walking distance). We hope to return.

Beautiful place for any meal. we went for dinner the service was excellent fast service of amazing food even had non alcoholic substitute, which made us extremely happy and the price of the meals were amazing. great night had definitely recommend we will be going again.

Very disappointed with our overnight stop. A pub with sub standard rooms. We were in the car park annex, the room was cold, dusty and very noisy as near the main road, people tipping out of pubs and surrounding car parks. Although there was a kettle only 2 tea bags, no coffee and small cups.

Worst service ever. Terrible cold food, terrible waitress lied about dropping our food on the floor (which we witnessed her drop it) and they charged us extra for the meal that was dropped on the floor. We waited 40 minutes for food we had pre-ordered days before. We had to get our own drinks from the bar, despite ordering them from the waitress that couldn’t be bothered to bring them to the table. We were shouted at by the staff when we questioned the bill. Please avoid this awful place at all costs

Checked into our room today and our room was dark, poky and not very clean. It was definitely NOT what was advertised on the website. The room could do with some heavy duty cleaning and a fresh coat of paint. The room also smells damp....
