Spotted Dog in West Berkshire

We booked lunch here because the reviews are good and the location worked with family coming from different directions. Our overarching feeling is that we felt rushed and that the staff were abrupt. The food was good but it certainly didn’t feel as relaxing as other locations that we have visited. It was quite busy so maybe that is the reason?

Our first impressions were extremely positive. Warm Welcome from the Bar Staff and reserved table in the Bay Window. Lunch was fabulous with Chef's Pie of the Day chosen as well as BBQ Spare Pork Ribs. Quick and Friendly Service. We will definitely be coming again soon! Nice cozy pub with incredibly friendly staff - make sure you say hello to Barnaby. I had the steak and mushroom pie with a side of fries and some of the best home made gravy I've ever had. This was some of the best food I've eaten and definitely the best since visiting the UK. Come here for a warm inviting atmosphere, full of great food and even nicer people. I highly recommend!

Being American with two Canadians, we needed a proper English pub experience, and we got just that and more. The staff and owner were excellent hosts, the food was brilliant, and the dog was cute. Thanks for having us!

Table booked for a Tuesday evening, very busy, service with a smile although a bit of a wait to order food. However great choice on menu and food freshly cooked and was fab. Really friendly staff and atmosphere, would recommend and would go back

We popped out at short notice, so we had no booking. However, we received the usual fab service. Great surprise, too. As I was driving, I was offered the non alcoholic alternative of my favourite Whitley Neil gin (for lovers of the rhubarb and ginger, this is awesome). Hubby had his favourite Timothy Taylors beer. Scrummy food...I'd opted for the fillet steak, which was perfect, and Hubby had the pie of the day (mmmm)

Yet again an amazing Sunday roast with excellent food and friendly amazing service, we have booked again this week. We have introduced friends who in turn have visited with family and thoughrouly enjoyed.

There with friends for a wake. Great venue, friendly staff and nice cold beer.

We had a lovely meal in the (big dog friendly) garden. Food was lovely, children's meals ~£7 and includes a scoop of ice cream which was very welcome to the smalls. The play ground was also a good space for them to run around.

Spent an enjoyable night in the garden with friends after work, my children were able to play in the play area which was easy to supervise and the food / service were fantastic - Would highly recommend!

We went to The Spotted Dog for a Sunday roast as Summer was very slow in coming! We both had the beef and it was delicious - pink and tender, just how we like it! It came with extra potatoes and extra gravy and was everything we wanted. The service was friendly and efficient, we recommend!

Excellent family pub! Great food at fair prices!

We were in the next door pub (The Castle) our daughter wanted to use the play park while we had a drink. I took her over to the park but was asked by the landlord to stay with her as she needed to be supervised due to insurance. I completely understand this, however no other child was supervised. A few minutes later, the landlord comes back over demanding we leave. Told to 'get out' and 'get off my property'in a firm manor in front of his own customers and kids using the play area. A little excessive seeing as though a 6 year old just wanted to play for a bit!

Very pleasant to visit for lunch. We sat outdoors as it was a beautiful, sunny day. My husband and I enjoyed Whitebait for starters, which was substantial and cooked just right. We had a chicken and bacon salad for mains. My husband really enjoyed it, but I thought the croutons tasted like stale frying oil and were not overly crunchy. The quantity of food was very good. However, trying to cut up rashers of bacon and chicken breast in a full bowl was not the easiest 🤦‍♀️ but it was accomplished, and we thoroughly enjoyed it! We had a lovely beer called Doom Bar also. We will go again, nice friendly staff, and quick service 😀

We are a party of 12 that came in today for a roast. The food was brought to the table at the same time and was pipping hot, the food was delicious and the service was great. Very friendly and helpful staff, very deserving of 5 stars

Every time we go here it never fails to impress. Today we had the most wonderful Sunday lunch. It was very busy, so I am glad we booked, but even though the place was humming we had wonderful service and a massive and very tasty sunday roast. We go to their 2-weekly quiz night now as well, whicih is very good humoured and certainly well worth a visit if you have time on a Monday evening, certainly well worth a visit if you like a quiz! Top marks all round, well done Kevin and your fantastic staff!!

Was very surprised. On arrival, the spotted dog does not look all that much, however the Sunday roast was really good. The staff were very attentive, and overall was a very good experience. Pleasantly surprised!

Lovely place to eat. Managed to get a table we didnt book. The staff friendly and helpful. The food was so tasty, I had scampi and my partner had a mixed grill so much of it. Will be back. Great menu and special board

Good lunch and very helpful alteration as I don't eat ham (or any other meat) so had delicious halloumi instead. Pity no decaffeinated coffee.

Excellent Sunday lunch. We come here with family each year after meeting for a local Remeberence Day service. The Sunday roasts are so good, service so efficient and they are so cheerful and accommodating. We had to add extra numbers about 3 times this year before we got it right, but they were happy to help. We will of course be back next year.

Just enjoyed a wonderful Sunday roast at this lovely pub. Even though they were full to the brim we had excellent service, together with an amazing roast dinner. Would definitely recommend this pub and it is certainly very good value for money. The tempura prawns were very tasty as a starter plus the leeks in cheese sauce was exceptional. Well done to all the chefs and staff for an amazing lunch.

We’ve had several meals here recently and every single one has been excellent in every way, better than we’ve experienced anywhere else for a very long time. Yesterday, our family birthday Sunday lunch was just superb - the service, food and ambience was fantastic. Massive thanks to Kev and his team for everything. We shall defo be back soon.

Prebooked our dinner so we could eat in a short space of time! food was booked for 6.10pm we were sat eating by 6.15 as we were a little later than planned food was kept warm in the kitchen until we arrived and the food was amazing really lovely I had fish and chips and it was almost too much!!the portion was huge Will definitely be back again especially when everyone was so accommodating Thank you very much

First time back in over eight years. Found the place to be lovely and cozy. Decor fresh and bright. And Lisa who served us was just so friendly and helpful. The meal was exactly what we asked for and so tasty. The restaurant was clean and tidy. Going back for Sunday lunch.

Went for a large group meal, staff were super friendly and it's a lovely pub/restaurant. Food was nice, came out warm and relatively quickly for such a large group.

We met up for a family gathering as it was my Husbands birthday, most of us had the Sunday roast, must be one of the best roast dinner I have eaten, the amount of lamb you got was amazing, variety of veg and plenty of them, the gravy was to die for, would throughly recommend going for lunch. The staff were friendly and the food arrived quickly. We had a lovely meal.

If you put it on your business card then you’ve got to deliver, and The Spotted Dog does that on all fronts! Great food, good service and value for money. It does exactly what it says on the tin, it’s pub grub served in the friendly style one should expect in this type of establishment. It’s Friday lunch so fish & chips all round, no issue for the request of a small portion for my small portion preferring father which was appreciated. Nothing more to be said other than looking forward to seeing Lisa & Erin next time. And as an aside,I am not easily impressed but for the two times here, spot on! Excuse the pun ………

My family of 7 recently had a superb Sunday lunch. Very friendly staff served us piping hot and tasty roast dinners with a superb variety of fresh vegetables. Definitely will return and highly recommend.

First time visiting the Spotted Dog. The pub was recommended by a friend and always raved about the Sunday roast, so a group of 10, Adults and children had to try it out! It was a last minute booking for a big group, and there was no hesitation in accomodating us. The service was great! All the staff were so polite and tentative and most importantly the Roast was enjoyed by everyone! Not a peep out of anyone whilst we were chowing down. The food came out hot and there was enough gravy to go around without having to ask for more. A perfect portion of everything on our plates. I do wish I had ordered the sticky toffee pudding as that was really really delicious. I instead ordered the lemon meringue, and my only criticism is that it wasn't lemony enough for me. Others who ordered it liked it, so it is really down to preference. The kids got to enjoy the playground too under the glorious autumn sun so all in all, everyone had a lovely afternoon. Stopped off for lunch on Saturday. We both had the beef pie which was homemade. I also had cheesecake, again homemade. It was nice to have a pub that serves good pub grub. We were well looked after by Lisa and Abbie. They don't add service charge to their bill but I made sure to add that because they deserved it.

I give 5 stars to this pub as it did well with service as well with the food. A good stop over for a 45 minute walk each way as part of my new exercise regime. Pheasant season is apparent and I simply love viewing allotments - holders have such green fingers.

Very friendly staff and there was a lively atmosphere. Reasonable choice of food and well cooked, for the most part. My only quibble was the chips! They were just mass-produced bottom of the range fare. Such a shame when there is so much more choice widely available these days. But because we were made so welcome, I'll probably return.

Stopped here on the way from Wales to Kent. It has a nice, country pub feel but was so handy being only a few minutes off the Newbury M4 junction. Service was very good and the Sunday lunch was excellent. We plan stop here again on our next trip.
