Today was our first visit to The Goat on the Roof and was super impressed. The food was outstanding and the cocktails were excellent. Would defo recommend.

Had a great time with my son sat at the bar sharing plates. Food was fabulous and wine was priced very reasonably, Lovely deserts to finish, just the right size... Spent a long time talking to the staff who were knowledgeable, friendly and fun. The polish gentleman who was front of house at the bar was standout, apologies I forgot your name... We will be back...

Amazing food, friendly stuff and great vibe/atmosphere! Even dog friendly!

We have eaten here before and love the food, wine choice and great service. Would love to be able to visit more often to support a local business but sadly the prices have escalated to a point where we can only justify it for special occasions. I realise it’s a cut above your average restaurant and recent accolades are well justified, but value for money is still important.

Fairly pricey. Wine bottle from £38, can buy by the glass £8 - £12. Dishes £5 - £20 each. You order a selection to make a complete meal - we ordered 7 between us over 3 courses and the cheapest bottle - total £103 inc 12.5% service charge, automatically added with no mention that it could be removed - this might be 'standard' now, but it's a pet hate of mine as we always like to tip directly. That said... Absolutely perfect for that special night out. Waiting staff were super lovely and chatty, every one of them, and the food was also lovely. Delightful and unusual menu offerings, all locally and UK sourced. Tapas delivered À la carte style, so it's very different from the unusual restaurant. Portion sizes were quite small. We were told that 'except for the 2 starters all other dishes were for sharing'. In all honesty they were not quite large enough for sharing being À la carte esk. Definitely go, find a reason. But be on a calorie restricted diet, or eat a little something first.

In both my personal and professional role, this is a must-try venue. The British sourced menu is diverse enough for most palettes. There are some nicely thought out twists and the service was first rate. The value for money based on the quality of ingredients and service effort was also very good. I particularly liked the mystery wine option. I very much look forward to my next visit.

Wonderful early evening meal. Appealing wine you don't find in supermarkets alongside beautifully prepared staple menu items and brilliant specials. Crispy potatoes an always must have. Hispi cabbage and beef carpacio favourites this time round. Our favourite place for ambience and best food in the area

It was our 2nd visit and it was a great decision to go back, and definitely not our last visit. The service is sharp, the cocktail drinks from the bar are magic. Long wine menu with plenty of choice. Then there is the food with flavours that will have you want to lick the plate and wish there was more. Be prepared to spend more than a big mac, but it is well worth it! Keep it up team!

Went on Saturday night for a celebration dinner with my children. We know what good food looks like and sadly were very disappointed. The menu tried hard to impress and the idea of local ingredients appealed to us. We live in Highclere near Newbury. Overall, the food was poorly executed and very average. The saddest thing was the comprehensive wine list is very over priced. I understand restaurants make their margin on wine, but we had a very average bottle of spanish wine that cost £72. I would suggest cost price was a lot less ! This is sad as Newbury needs good restaurants, but these guys are taking the micky now that they have a mention in the Michelin guide. Sad.

We came for our first visit on numerous recommendations and they were all so right. Absolutely superb food, equally superb friendly and efficient service without rushing us. Visited midweek lunchtime. Very friendly welcome. Nice small intimate place with nice decor in the town centre. Enchanting unusual menu with super tasty tapas type dishes. Larger dishes also available. So nice to go somewhere which is innovative and different.

Overall a very pleasant but perfectly average evening. The food was enjoyable but nothing special. The wine list was comprehensive and overpriced. I would have preferred to have seen a wine list of 20 excellent wines rather than 60 average wines. Staff were great at first but uninterested as the evening went on. I'm very sad to write such a negative here however it also saddenes me that something as good as this so quickly turned into average. The vineyard in Newbury is much better. The horse and Groom in Newbury as the same quality food but a very different price.

Real gem of a restaurant. Lots of big bold flavours with a cracking wine list of interesting wines at reasonable prices. Crab with fennel, the pork belly and duck leg were stand out excellent. Everything was just done right.

We left it up to the kitchen and every dish the brought out was amazing. Our host Chloe was knowledgeable and good fun. We will definitely be back! Great value considering the quality.

We visited the Wine Bar tonight having previously had dinner here. It was warm and cosy on a chilly night and the service was great. The wine we ordered was delicious, and the chicken and mushroom crisp breads went down a treat. This is exactly what Newbury was missing

Great experience! Amazing food! Warm atmosphere! 🌸 Yesterday I celebrated my birthday with my husband in the restaurant. It was our first visit. We had a lunch. Guys, I must say food is amazing! My husband is very fussy and doesn’t like a new things but when he tried those tapas he was speechless. Omg flavors and size of dishes are perfect. Not too much not too small - just right! We had 3 courses each and even ordered extra because we simply wanted to try more flavors!!!! And deserts …… just wow. “Lost Bread” desert is highly recommended by me!!! Restaurant was quiet with a great atmosphere, staff was very helpful when we asked for recommendations , very friendly and caring. I had an amazing Birthday lunch in there and we will definitely comeback again. Also parking was very easy, just 3 min walk from the place. Beautiful, beautiful place with amazing food and very good prices. Highly recommended. I wish we had more places like this! Thank you guys 🌸

Great British tapas and wine selection, a must if you are in Newbury

Easily the best restaurant in Newbury - this small provincial town is lucky to have a restaurant of this calibre. Having been here a few times now, the quality of food is exceptional; there's no need to recommend specific dishes because you won't be disappointed no matter what you order. The setting and atmosphere are nice, and the service is polite, attentive and friendly without being overbearing. The concept of 'English tapas' means you can try lots of small dishes and enjoy a diverse range of tastes and flavours in one sitting.

Why can't I give more than 5 stars!! Exceptional from beginning to the end - not that we wanted our evening to end! The most flavoursome food, atmospheric vibe, and super efficient staff. Could not recommend more. We'll see you soon team GOTR!

We went for lunch on Friday for my husband's birthday. From the personal greeting wishing him happy birthday upon our arrival to the lovely service and the delicious food, we both thoroughly enjoyed our experience. We'll definitely be back!

We enjoyed a truly excellent meal at The Goat on the Roof last night. We were shown to our table in a busy place, full of atmosphere. Service was very warm, friendly and highly efficient. The food, literally everything, was delicious without exception. The Figgy Gins were amazing, and what an excellent wine list. Perfect in every way. Thank you GotR!

This was a truly beautiful restaurant with a satisfying atmosphere which serves unique and exceptional seasonal English dishes accompanied by lovely wine. Our servers were very helpful and attentive. And as many have said we are very lucky to have this place so central in Newbury to us. I will be back.

Very, very happy to have found Goat On The Roof! The English tapas billing is a little confusing but that's instantly dispelled when the menu is explained and you see everyone else's food. There's a lovely choice from the menus- a shorter, cheaper, smaller portion one alongside the main menu and all of it looked fantastic. Our choices were excellent and had some really interesting combinations. We didn't order any wine as we were driving but the table next to us had a fine selection! Pricing is unbelievably reasonable as well, and all served in a cosy setting. As an added bonus, there are no nuts used on the premises!

We are so lucky to have this restaurant in our hometown. The passion brought to you in the form of food, wine, atmosphere and service is second to none. We get it, we really do. Please don’t ever stop what you do because you do it so well!

By far the best restaurant for miles around. If this was in London, it would be impossible to get a table. The quality of the food is superb, the wine list is gorgeous and beautifully and personally curated and the service is impeccable. It's so heartening to see the same staff say for year after year, which proves that this must be a wonderful place to work as well as eat.

I’m very sad to write this as I do think most of the staff put their hearts into their work and Jay Rayner ( The Guardian critic) rates it, which is why we all went. They obviously played up to him… The waiter when we sat made it be known that it was British tapas , seasonal and the dishes arrive when they are ready. No further advice about the menu. Dishes are grouped into types of meats and vegetable dishes, with some ( that turned out to be) a mouthful for one…not a sharing thing. But this wasn’t outlined so when you’re in a group ordering is difficult to determine. If we had been given some advice on what was needed to be combined it may have been a more enjoyable taste experience. As it turned out it was very rich food which was extremely salty, so much so I barely ate. This as it turned out this was a good thing as my husband and another of our party had stomach pains and diarrhoea for 48 hours afterwards. When they say tapas they mean what you order is all you get. So if you need bread order it, if you want vegetables order them. All dishes, including the vegetables are excessively salty, oily and rich, with no let up! The wine list offers the option of naming the type of wine, grape, vineyard etc… and it’s free…really? I love great food and don’t mind paying….but this is overpriced, snobbish and pretentious.

I had recently had heart saving surgery which my wife with relief that it went well treated me to a day at the proms while there we googled the best restaurant and on turning up without booking was very grateful for them to allow me and my wife a table the waiters were extremely good so when i paid which i did before the waiter said was everything fine I said not really but thanks anyway then like a actor from faulty towers a man in whites head chef and most probably owner stopped me after my wife just walked out and asked what is your problem you started ok but we left these burnt crisps i eat my main 20 minutes before my wife's i paid you in full so not trying to bump you.then this little midget of a chef only got me in headlock and said you get out when I was leaving after paying for crap

Really good. A very different style of menu that provided a varied range of plates to share. Each dish was creative and the use of locally sourced produce was a nice twist. However the best bit was the taste which was outstanding. Between 4 of us, we tried 8-10 dishes and none were disappointing in any way. The service was great and it was just a really nice place to meet up with friends and catch up over a long lunch!

Love this restaurant! Everything was spot on as always. Wonderful flavours and textures beautifully presented. Timing of the arrival of dishes was perfect allowing enough time to savour the gorgeous food and a little conversation between. Great selection of wines for all budgets. All the staff were polite and professional. Can’t wait to go back. Btw, loved the sourdough soldiers, lobster tortellini special plus the celeriac and apple side. Oh my, the lost bread….

I had high expectations, not least because my family love tapas and we have 2 excellent tapas venues where I live. However this was an outing for my mother's birthday and it was where she wanted to go. I have such mixed feelings about it though. Some dishes were lovely (eg leeks, crispy potatoes, pork belly and beef) but others were underwhelming (salmon, mushroom flatbreads) and some were not pleasant at all (fermented veg and st Emilion desserts). Service was good (friendly and attentive) and food brought out as it was ready. It was quite busy and as such was quite loud and echoey (no soft furnishings to absorb noise) so conversation was difficult. Service charge added automatically (tho 3 of my party had St Emilion and didn't eat it) and no staff thought to ask why!! So definitely things that could be improved...

The food is excellent. We ordered multiple dishes and desserts and they were all scrumptious with very generous portions. It’s well cooked, well presented food that is stylish yet grounded. I would highly recommend it.

We were debating between restaurants and settled on the goat on the roof, would certainly recommend. Staff pleasant and helpful giving advice about dishes, flavours and wine choices. Interesting dishes on the menu. Lovely atmosphere, no rush to finish meal and vacate table. We tried a good selection (if not all vegetarian dishes) and weren't disappointed. Specific mention to brown butter ice-cream dessert. Good staff, nice flavours and polite staff what more could you want. Overall would recommend and if we are in the area would 100% return

Wasn't as impressed this time. Food was more expensive ( e.g £17 for just a small portion of trout) and it was all served rather haphazardly rather than a bit at a time. So we ended up with the table overloaded and things going cold before we could eat them It would have been better if we had only had a few things at a time which went together.

Superb lunch with tasty and innovative small plates, with local ingredients and perfect for sharing as we did. Mushroom ravioli was amazing, but everything was cooked very well and showed off a range of tastes and techniques. Don’t forget the homemade ice cream: often an afterthought but this was creamy and clever combinations

Beautiful! Gluten free options available/dishes kindly adapted for coeliacs. Perfect meal and atmosphere. Lovely to sit at the counter and see the dishes prepared. Amazing ferments - would go back for those alone.

High quality, seasonal and local ingredient small and larger plates prepared with skill and care. Excellent, knowledgeable staff, relaxed service in a nice environment. Not pictured was a beautiful crab soufflé in a pool of crab-studded sauce, absolutely delicious. Super proper sourdough with room-temperature butter! Venison Haunch was a pile of tender moist sliced meat in a fennel sauce, the roast butternut squash on salsa verde was lovely, but the star was the day special chanterelles with a herb pesto, egg yolk & butter. Stunning. Good wine list, excellent craft beers and very gluten-free friendly. Highly recommended for a finessed experience. Not expensive!

I went back to my home town for dins with a school friend. What a perfect little gem The Goat on The Roof is, outstanding service, fabulous wines by the glass, an amazing Chef who accomodated my garlic allergy. The crab souffle was amazing. I could only dream of having a restaurant this good in Ascot 🤷‍♀️ I will definately return. 🥂

Amazing evening. The space, the atmosphere, the food, the drinks was all excellent. Staff are friendly and attentive, with great recommendations. Would recommend sitting at the bar as it’s great to chat with them, but you can still be private if you prefer.

The little skewers were nice. The lemon sole and ravioli special were satisfyinf and tasty dishes, but the mackeral was very ordinary and the crab souufle was disappointingly small. The menu offers mackeral with aubergines, but the amount of aubergines was derisory. The crab accompaniment of leeks was a thimblefull, and one should request a magnifying glass to find the tomatoes with the potatoes. The worst was the cider - we ordered half pints and got tiny portions in wine glasses. My guest is a member of the gourmet Food Writers' Guild and even she was surprised by the meanness. The service was OK, but not worth the fixed charge of 12.5%.

Here the food is absolutely fresh British food with each dish prepared only when you order it . There’s lots of lovely fish and meat but also veggies. All served in an interesting way. Lunch deal is 3 sizeable tapas for £15. Each one is exquisite. All served by charming efficient waiters. This is my third visit and each is as good as the last. Ps music is laid back and not intrusive. Hoorah!!!! And the restaurant is light and airy and overlooking the canal. I cannot wait to return.

Absolutely incredible food. Everything we ate was flavoured and cooked to perfect. We sat at the chefs table which was intimate and personal. The staff were very informative and friendly. Incredible experience for my birthday. Would come back every day of the week if I could!

We had been told about the Goat on the Roof in Newbury by friends and decided to try it. We were not disappointed. It was outstanding from every aspect. The "British Tapas" were delicious and thoughtfully presented. We were welcomed by the Patron, Patrick, and his attention to detail was immediately apparent. Patrick advised us as to how many dishes to order and said that if we did not have enough, just order some more. This is exactly what we did and the second order came out of the kitchen very promptly. We both had generous and excellent glasses of wine and fizzy water. We both thought that the bill, including wine and service, was very good value. We will certainly be going again and will recommend the Goat to our friends - a very welcome addition to dining in West Berkshire.

We had our post-wedding celebration lunch at the Goat on the Roof, and it was the best decision we made! Patrick and his team were incredibly friendly, and attentive to our group. The food (and impeccable wines!) stole the show of course, all our guests were raving about the meal for days afterwards - we tried almost all the dishes, and none disappointed. Favourites included the Berkshire steak with melt-in-your-mouth mushrooms, IOW tomatoes with a perfectly balanced pesto, and the goats curd tortellini which was an absolute delight - I could go on! The team dealt perfectly with allergies, and some picky eaters as well. Our expectations from previous meals at the Goat were high, and it’s safe to say they were exceeded! We’ll be back ♥️🐐

Very nice overall. Particularly enjoyed the excellent mackerel and pork belly. The burnt butter ice cream excellent and a perfect temperature. I found the fudge was very tasty but too fridge cold, better taste at room temp. I also felt that for the choc pudding too which was bitter and delicious. Difficult to have the patience to wait for it to warm when it is in front of you though! Really nice ambience, we visit Newbury half a dozen times a year and would definitely come again

Perfection. GOTR understood the assignment! A restaurant where staff are super knowledgeable about the wine list and the menu; we asked for a recommendation and you delivered! Service was on point and not intrusive. Wine bar upstairs - what a gift! Best of British ingredients and sparkling wines, delightful.

The food was lovely. I have to give a hint for a starter: the cheese flat breads are insanely good, order them with smoked salmon pate, you won't be sorry. Magnificent wine list as well.Everything we ordered was delicious, but what really makes this a trip worth taking is the service. The service is simply exceptional and cannot be improved upon. This is an intimate, casual, yet elevated dining experience and I'm raving about it to everyone I know. We look forward to returning.

Learnt about this restaurant via Muddy Stilettoes blog and was having a business lunch in Newbury so decided to give a whirl! Tapas style food, lovely ambience and super friendly and efficient service.

Great to sit at the bar and talk with the host who explained the menu in greater detail, making recommendations and suggestions. I thought the mystery wine idea was good fun - even though we failed to guess the details correctlyA lovely evening

Thoroughly enjoyed our meal here on Friday night for a birthday. I really can't fault it, a lovely evening and I left feeling full and totally satisfied. Very helpful, nice staff and my 0% G&T was so good! We also tried all the deserts and the chocolate one was to die for, and the lemon curd, and the brownie...
