The little skewers were nice. The lemon sole and ravioli special were satisfyinf and tasty dishes, but the mackeral was very ordinary and the crab souufle was disappointingly small. The menu offers mackeral with aubergines, but the amount of aubergines was derisory. The crab accompaniment of leeks was a thimblefull, and one should request a magnifying glass to find the tomatoes with the potatoes. The worst was the cider - we ordered half pints and got tiny portions in wine glasses. My guest is a member of the gourmet Food Writers' Guild and even she was surprised by the meanness. The service was OK, but not worth the fixed charge of 12.5%.

What an absolute joy. This restaurant is an Antidote to all the restaurants that charge high prices for mediocre food with bad service. Here the food is absolutely fresh British food with each dish prepared only when you order it . There’s lots of lovely fish and meat but also veggies. All served in an interesting way. Lunch deal is 3 sizeable tapas for £15. Each one is exquisite. All served by charming efficient waiters. This is my third visit and each is as good as the last. Ps music is laid back and not intrusive. Hoorah!!!! And the restaurant is light and airy and overlooking the canal. I cannot wait to return.

We had been told about the Goat on the Roof in Newbury by friends and decided to try it. We were not disappointed. It was outstanding from every aspect. The "British Tapas" were delicious and thoughtfully presented. We were welcomed by the Patron, Patrick, and his attention to detail was immediately apparent. Patrick advised us as to how many dishes to order and said that if we did not have enough, just order some more. This is exactly what we did and the second order came out of the kitchen very promptly. We both had generous and excellent glasses of wine and fizzy water. We both thought that the bill, including wine and service, was very good value. We will certainly be going again and will recommend the Goat to our friends - a very welcome addition to dining in West Berkshire.

Very nice overall. Particularly enjoyed the excellent mackerel and pork belly. The burnt butter ice cream excellent and a perfect temperature. I found the fudge was very tasty but too fridge cold, better taste at room temp. I also felt that for the choc pudding too which was bitter and delicious. Difficult to have the patience to wait for it to warm when it is in front of you though! Really nice ambience, we visit Newbury half a dozen times a year and would definitely come again

The food was lovely. I have to give a hint for a starter: the cheese flat breads are insanely good, order them with smoked salmon pate, you won't be sorry. Magnificent wine list as well.Everything we ordered was delicious, but what really makes this a trip worth taking is the service. The service is simply exceptional and cannot be improved upon. This is an intimate, casual, yet elevated dining experience and I'm raving about it to everyone I know. We look forward to returning.

The team at Goat really are the Greatest Of All Time! They are a super friendly bunch and incredibly knowledgeable about food and drink but never make you feel intimidated by it. The food is hands down the most delicious and creative you will get anywhere in Newbury and beyond; a true taste sensation. I’d encourage anyone to try all sorts of dishes, even things you don’t necessarily think you’d like. As a non fish fan I’m really enjoying some amazing fish dishes now. The wine list is extensive yet unique with a number of bottles slowly becoming favourites. The team will happily guide you if you are unsure what to choose. The cocktails are dangerously delicious and the relaxed atmosphere makes for a great dining experience. I cannot recommend highly enough!

Such brilliant food, in a great atmosphere and from knowledgeable staff. A wine list to die for (try the orange wine) and the desserts always include one slightly outside the box which is always the best (in my experience). The way they combine flavours for the vegetarian plates has even me (a fussy eater) ordering them. And the meat is always prepared and served sublimely. Just a fabulous restaurant. From the chicken skin and marmite crispbreads to the Italian meringue and strawberries via monkfish bao buns and the best local steak with crisp asparagus, this was the best meal I’ve had here. I passed by this restaurant since it opened in April 2022 but hesitant to go in as I did not quite understand what it stood for. However, my curiosity was finally piqued and I sauntered in hoping they had a table on an early week day evening. I got lucky! Patrick the owner was courteous, polite and extremely helpful in explaining the menu containing ‘seasonal and sustainable British tapas and organic wines’. I opted for Berkshire Butchers Steak Sauce Diane, Cambridge Tenderstem Broccoli Wild Garlic Butter and Posset Yorkshire Rhubarb, Meringue to cleanse the palate. All washed down with a 2022 ‘Parcela 333’ Garnacha Blanca, Victor Ausejo, Rioja, Spain. I even had room for a delicious flat white, decaffeinated oat coffee. I thoroughly recommend this place. Particularly at lunch time as they presently offer 3 tapas for £12, Tues-Fri 12 noon-2:30 pm.

This restaurant gives you a different experience. Small tapas-style dishes served not in a given order, but as and when ready. Nicely presented and good food. Overall disappointed. I had big hopes for the British style tapas ... but each of my dishes just missed being "right" 😕 e.g. the battered haddock still had the skin on the filter & the batter was soft, which in a small dish wasn't good, the drizzle of mayo wasn't in balance and the peas turned out to be lentils 😕 Positives were staff very professional and helpful. Place nicely laid out and really like the goat posters. But for the prices charged, the dishes should be spot on and they aren't ☹️ (£45/head with no wine) UPDATE: Responding to "Everything OK", "Yes" was partly me being old and being brought up to always be polite, partly I thought everyone else was happy. It was only at home that various comments were made, and I decided to post my thoughts. Various dishes were rated excellent, e.g. Lost Bread. Some were ying/yang, e.g. Pollock was really good, but the sauce was way too salty ... I had a taste and totally agree, the pollock was lovely. UPDATE: Checked, and the other person who had haddock did not have any skin, the batter was crispy and it tasted very nice.

It's great to see independent restaurants like this in Newbury! They have a very nice, and reasonably priced, wine selection. However, their food portions are tiny for their prices. I am tired of restaurants charging £15+ per small plate and calling it tapas. We ordered the lamb ribs for £20 and we were served 2 ribs in total; that was roughly a sum 4 bites. At the end of the day a restaurant should feed their paying customers. The cheesecake was also very uninspired and lazy. Adding slices of raw chestnut mushrooms doesn't make anything umami. Having said that, I appreciate their effort and understand they too have to deal with increased costs.

I felt really underwhelmed by the experience, I'd heard great things about this place. However I feel the food was over priced for what it is and the descriptions not particularly accurate (for example the scallops were a special, described as 'Cornish scallops with spinach and XO sauce), yet the sauce had anchovies in which gave a grainy texture. I like anchovies, if I knew to have expected them perhaps the texture wouldn't have been odd, at first I thought the graininess came from the spinach. I ordered fizz (my first glass with a meal out since giving birth) and yet they poured it into a wine glass?! When I asked for a champagne flute, they went to get a coupe - I'm happy with either but I don't think you should have to ask for it. No one asked us how the food was whilst we were eating it. Only after we had asked for the bill with the servicer only looking at my husband. Maybe it's the baby hormones or that fact our baby was about to kick off but I just wanted to leave by that point.

High expectations - left feeling ripped off. we ordered our bottle of wine & food, were asked if we wanted starters with mains - no! we waited for 30mins after starters, finally waiter arrived back and advised he had cancelled our mains as we didn't want everything to arrive same time!! FFS re-ordered. we ordered 4 main dishes, they were very small (even for tapas) - 3 arrived. we finished the 3 and then the 4th arrived, we sent it back saying it's a bit late now! we asked for the bill - our £19.50 bottle of wine was itemised as £38.00!! we asked what's going on to be advised the wine menu prices are for 1/2 bottles! what restaurant shows two prices - per glass and per half bottle?!! everyone does per glass & bottle. So the £54 bottles are actually £108... they must have this all the time as they immediately reduced the bill. food was excellent, although overpriced for qty - will not be returning

We visited Goat on the Roof for the second time and if anything it was even better than the first time. The chefs are phenomenal - as is everyone who works there. They even recognised us from last time! The food is outstanding and is equal if not better than food we have eaten at Michelin starred restaurants. Outstanding dishes for us were the beef fat waffle with truffle (freshly delivered that day), the salsify in chicken butter, the pork belly, the baked onions and the poached pair. They were outstanding, but everything we ate was phenomenal. Cocktails and wine were delicious too. I cannot recommend Goat on the Roof enough - it really is something special. Four of us visited on NYE for dinner. The restaurant had a great atmosphere and the staff were friendly. The food was good, some dishes were really good, none were poor. The main issue we had with this restaurant was that it's simply overpriced. There were some annoyances when a group fo four order a dish like fish goujons and just 3 goujons arrive too. If the food was exceptional then perhaps the prices might be justified, but it isn't. Whilst we enjoyed our evening, we spent nearly £100 per head (this did include 2 x wine) and left still hungry.

Let's start with the positives. Goat On The Roof has an exciting and bold menu, a killer wine list and a pitch perfect atmosphere. We also left hungry. The tapas style dishes presented a few genuinely interesting ideas but every dish we tried somehow failed to really impress for one reason or another. A few creative flavour combinations not really singing to me and other dishes playing it a bit safe / flat despite sounding interesting on menu. Our waiter suggested around 2 dishes per person. We ordered 6 as some sounded a little small then followed it up with 2 deserts. Might I suggest refillable sourdough as a starter option or something? Still had to get some chips from a van on the way home!

What an amazing experience for our first time at Goat On The Roof! We booked a table at the chef’s bar, although there wasn’t much info about this choice on the website, we were thoroughly pleased to sit up at the bar with the view of the chef preparing dishes and drinks being made. Zoe in particular was super attentive, the service was second to none, you really feel well looked after. We spent about 2 hours here on a mix of tapas. We opted for wild mushroom and chicken skin crisp breads - unbelievably moorish, Atlantic red fish - so fresh, Hampshire pheasant bao bun - a delightful eat, crispy potatoes with marmite and truffle - speechless, Wiltshire Savoy cabbage with smoked tomato crumb - so tasty. We went for the day special too which was Barnsley lamb chop and mint… honestly sublime. Then dark choc terrine and lost bread (honey brioche) for pudding - unbelievably good! The atmosphere was cosy and the lighting was perfect, not harsh but totally relaxing. Really looking forward to our next visit! Thanks guys!

Food a little bit hit and miss but generally good. Very good service but a bit high on the ponceometer...bring it down a little bit. But will definitely come back.

I have been to goat on the roof many times and have never had a meal that wasn't perfection!!! Firstly Patrick and Sam and their team are wonderful, attentive and full of knowledge about the menu and wines!! The service is second to none and you always feel looked after. Every dish is sustainable and organic and always tastes fresh, they change their menu regularly so there's always something new and exciting! Food is amazing quality and really different! The daily specials are always a treat!! The British tapas and wine bar is such a lovely addition to Newbury high street and it's so lovely being able to go to a small hospitality business run with passion and experience! The interior is gorgeous too! If you haven't tried it yet, you absolutely have to.

Delightful little restaurant. Would recommend the chef's bench. Pork belly, burrata and chocolate pudding as standout dishes!

Wonderful place from start to finish. Excellent service, I don’t think the dropped fork had properly stopped bouncing on the beautiful polished floor before a replacement was in position. The decor is inviting, but the real reason we were there was for a special occasion , a memorable meal and we were delighted. We had the chef’s menu with accompanying wines. Gorgeous!

Food was very good. A real pleasure. Obviously, space will always be an issue at busy times but they do their best to fit people in.

Fantastic wedding venue! Staff are very welcoming and the food absolutely amazing. The venue itself is really stunning with a nice outdoor area along the canal.

The Catherine Wheel has a large choice of real ales on rotation which makes it stand out in Newbury. The staff are friendly and helpful. There are several areas including a side paio with seating.
