As an American through-hiking the 300 mile Cambrian Way, I arrived in Abergavenny with a bad knee and having just spent three days and nights climbing through mud and sleeping in frost. Damp and dehydrated, I came to the Kings Head in desperate need of the comforts of civilization. I can safely say that I found them here. It’s funny how a few days in wilderness can remind you how valuable a place like this really is. I must have looked and smelled like a harassed mountain goat, but the friendly staff (Kate and Raj, if memory serves) welcomed me in and cheerfully directed me to the three things I needed most: a cushioned seat, an place to plug in my long-dead phone, and a beer. I arrived way too early to check right into my room so I settled into the pub for what I assumed would be at least four hours until check-in. While I re-oriented myself with the feeling of being indoors, I found myself chatting with the other patrons, who were all from the area and were deeply curious about my journey and who were unfailingly lovely. Unbeknownst to me, the staff had decided to prioritize getting my room ready and I only ended up sitting in the pub for about an hour, an hour which flew by in the company of the other patrons. In a time when the hospitality industry seems full of corner-cutters, penny-pinchers, and faceless apps, it is deeply refreshing to find a real, human sense of hospitality like you find at the Kings Head. The smiles are warm. The rooms are immaculate. The food is excellent. The sheets are crisp. Though I found myself many miles from my own address, the Kings Head felt like home. I don’t know if I’ll ever pass through Abergavenny again. If I do, I know where I’ll be staying. Five stars.

Whilst the Cafe is clean, quirky with friendly staff I fail to understand the concept of high cost low quality, low portion food. Full Breakfast nearly £10 which was served on a tea plate (long and narrow version) in which the Quality is just as good if not better at the local greasy spoon, with more food for the money at around £4 cheaper per head. Probably would not recommend to any person, as there are plenty of main stream cafe’s that offer the same for less. It’s definitely catering and cashing in on the richer person. It’s not about not being able to afford it, it’s about having to pay £30 for a morning munch that really you can get for half the price, with no difference in quality and more on the plate! Breakfast was not tasteless or poor just the costing of it is, with what seems to be a kids sized (adult meal) with no real standing out to justify the price!

A fairly historic site situated by the side of the Newport to Brecon canal. Interesting to have a look around/walk the towpath and then enjoy a light lunch and coffee.

Came to Abergavenny for a wander and something to eat, couldn’t decide on where to dine as we walked through the town, my wife didn’t want us to pay some of the prices of the lovely looking restaurants as we passed. So fish and chips it was and what a treat it was! Beautiful batter, perfect chips and super efficient service. Only 3 stars for atmosphere, which is a little unfair, they aren’t seeking to provide that experience. This was an every bit as good as award winning fish and chips we had recently in Anstruther Scotland. Thanks, we will be back!

Run by youngsters without supervision. Very slow service, considering the place was empty. Tables left dirty with used mugs/cups/plates etc. staff decided to clean the air con unit about the service counter, which displayed food etc. Customers in and out and walking around a ladder and other bits. Disappointed we had chosen this venue to meet up with friends, so many other choices in town.
