We stumbled upon this place and glad we stopped by. We don’t usually choose three first place we come to but it paid off on this occasion. A chalkboard and some unsuspecting steps lead you into a quiet, shaded courtyard close to the heart of Abergavenny. We chose to sit outside but there is the choice of indoor seating too. We were seated and a drinks order taken quickly by a friendly waitress. Our food order taken shortly after with a reasonable wait time for our food. The coffee was hot and tasty, the homemade cordial cool and refreshing. The food is seasonal using local produce and made to order. Clean plates from us. This would be a great drop off point if you’re heading towards Brecon but it’s worth a trip all of its own.

Stumbled on this place. I love the use of the building, I was really surprised at what I found at the bottom of the steps. Service was great from some lovely young people - well done to them. The menu was small but varied. Absolutely loved what we had delicious and served piping hot. Not a " cheap eat" but we'll worth the money - we knew what we were paying for!

Hmmm, a conflicted experience but I’m left with an “Emperor’s New Clothes” sensation. Ooh, a wonderful local menu, gorgeous courtyard, with characterful rusty and wobbly dining furniture…charmed, I’m not so sure. No one came whilst I stood to await a table, a quick wave, or hello l, from the 3 people working would have sufficed. The food. To be frank, the lunches were expensive because they were disappointingly meagre. There was a potato, egg and pea dish, that had a maximum of 4 new potatoes, halved, in a broth. This was served with a knife and fork. The poached egg had a solid yolk; disappointing. There was no one to see to summon help until it became clear that something else was certainly required in order to consume the broth - assuming it was intended to be consumed. Two slices of bread and a spoon were duly presented, without apology. Worryingly, the bread was then an addition to the bill. Again, disappointing. £16-17ish for peas, potatoes and over-cooked egg, with two slices of bread. I’m not sure that we feel charmed, although some might. I think we just feel a bit conned. Lovely spot for a cup of tea but I will not recommend eating…unless you’re spending someone else’s money, and you’re not hungry. Then, you’ll be charmed I’m sure.

Always love lunch at the Chapel, innovative cuisine, and lovely vibe. Sadly the service today was atrocious, the young waitress was taking orders from customers who arrived after us, we were totally ignored, two very businesslike waitresses who constantly looked our way, but that’s as far as that went, I was a guest so couldn’t complain at the time, the owner is charming, and it pains me to give an unfavourable review but they really do need to get their act together, I won’t be rushing back, prices too have gone up considerably, sign of the times I suppose.

HORRENDOUS ! Who wants all that fresh, local junk with an ever-changing seasonal menu and fantastic cakes & coffee - when you could go to the place with the Big 'M' and eat 'proper' stuff instead ? ? ? Can't believe how bad this place is ! Staff are surly and unfriendly; you probably won't be able to choose anything to eat as you want every dish on the menu; you have to buy several cakes to take home with you because they look so unappetizing; hideous, well-planted secluded courtyard for outside dining; the place has pottery, art, local crafts and regular events too. I have been there loads of times and have to go back 'cos I simply cannot believe how bad it ! ;) Don't go there - ever ! ( but if you do, probably a good idea to book as is always busy ! ) :)

Sadly, the quality of service and attitudes towards customers depends upon whether the owner is present, or not. A tip, when you ask a customer 'how was it?' and they tell you they waited an hour for a coffee, don't tell them they are lying, when you don't like their answer. Equally don't ask, if you don't want to know. Food was good, but despite asking twice, the drinks didn't arrive until an hour after ordering. I appreciate that sometimes things go wrong, it's how you deal with it that makes the difference.

Starting to be out and about again after the pandemic. Interesting to see how things have changed - some better, some not so. This venue has retained its interesting, if limited, menu; some might even say quirky. I like that. There is now a ‘wait to be greeted’ policy. The greeter today was exceptional. Friendly, listened to what I said, replied intelligently and with humour; and did what was promised. Simple things maybe, but not all that common these days. I opted to sit outside. Service was prompt and polite. A linen napkin and a carafe of water emphasised attention to detail. To be commended.

We visited the cafe with my wife's parents and our two children. The setting is nice and we were seated after a short wait. The menu is quite small and rather pretentious. The food, when it finally arrived was pretty tasty, however removing all the snobbery it's effectively the most overpriced cheese and ham toasties that have ever existed. The place had clearly forgotten our order, people around us being served after 10 mins of being seated. 40 mins later the children's food arrived, it didn't really match what was expected, two slices of toast and jam for over £6... yes, that's not a typo! Another 15 mins of waiting the toasties arrived. Again, for the price (£12+) it's cheese and ham with a bit of chutney. We were told that the children's food always comes out first, not with the rest of the group which I found a bit weird. Hence why I think the rest of the order was forgotten. The staff there seemed a bit lackluster also, a bit wet around the edges. Probably won't be returning.

Stumbled across this gem today. We were right on closing time for Lunch and they couldn't have been more accommodating. We were initially served by Hattie who immediately put us at ease and explained what was left and included our very own 9 year old Hattie too. We all decided on variations of grilled cheese sandwiches. I'm not exaggerating when I say they were the best ones we've ever had. H had her's plain 8n brioche and Hubby and I had ours with red onion relish on sour dough with a side of salad and made in house rhubarb and beetroot ketchup! Delicious 😋. All swilled down with tea and finished with sour cherry baked cheesecake! We sat inside due to the inclimate weather but there was a beautiful court yard should you wish. I would 100% recommend and will return.

Deciding to visit another town which I had been to many years ago, I went by train, lucky me! After enjoying a wander around the many individual shops, the market hall and old buildings, i decided to have a substantial snack and this place had caught my eye on the tourist information website. It was not YET raining and very busy and pleasant inside the restaurant down steps by the chapel. I had walked through a courtyard garden to the entrance and asked if I could eat outside...I always prefer that to busy chatter indoors. Very pleasant staff laid a table for me in the courtyard, which had many trees so tha I escaped the rain. I enjoyed a frittata of roast new potatoes, courgettes, violas!!, beet etc. and a glass of wine, followed by a soft and delicious carrot cake. The price was fine..£12.00 for the frittata, the service was good and most importantly, the food was excellent. I shall certainly be taking the train again......especially as the menu changes and there are some new , exciting tastes on it.

She bustles around us for the next 10 mins, bringing menus to customers to the left and right if us.At 11.50, a second waitress comes and asks us if we are there for lunch. We say yes. She brings us a menu. She leaves, comes back and informs us that she can only take orders for drinks but not food. Food orders are only taken after 12.00. I order a drink. At 12.05. Above waitress comes to our table again. I open my mouth to place my food order and I'm informed by the waitress that she can't take my order because ”someone has gotten their order in before me”.?I sit at my table thinking that although my life is dull, I should endeavour to spend it doing something other than trying to order lunch in a cafe, on a day that it's open and supposedly serving lunch, trying to work out the etiquette, the timing of when I should place an order in synchronous harmony with the other patrons in the cafe.I get up and go pay for my drink. Cordial with sparkling water - £2. I'm asked by the (first) waitress if I would like to pay for my drink separately. I ask her ”seperate from what?” and she looks at me if I was care in the community.I go to Greggs and buy a coffee and a vegan sausage roll. The lady behind the counter had no problem understanding how the food service industry works - I am served without having to speak to 2 people across 5 conversations in 15 mins in order to make my wishes understood. The Chapel serves lovely food. It's pricey but people go for the atmosphere. The people are polite...but on this occasion, absolutely clueless. Why did you get rid of the menus on the blackboard? And your menu (on scrappy pieces of paper) appears greatly reduced, as does your portions sizes.I won't be coming again.

I had heard really good reports of this place, so took my friend whilst visiting Abergavenny. She insisted on paying. I am mortified that I gave her the impression we were in for a treat. £5.80 is a ridiculous price for the Welsh rarebit, one thin slice of toast and the cheese topping that had a most peculiar taste. Last Saturday we came to the Chapel for a concert and the pre concert dinner, our third. On each occasion the food took far too long to be serve. On this last occasion the wine took 20 minutes to arrive and this was after we had asked for it twice. The starters tòok 40 minutes and the main course just five minutes before we had to go to the concert upstairs so we had no time to eat it. If the kitchen cannot cope, then the number of tables should be restricted so that an acceptable service can be provided. No complaints with waiting staff who as always are charming and doing their very best. We will continue to eat at the Chapel as the meals are always delicious but never again before a concert.

Before I talk about the food I want to say that this is one of the best coffees I have ever had......and I love my coffee...as long as it is good! I had the asparagus with butter and sea salt- absolutely delicious. My husband had a toasted cheese sandwich in sourdough. More deliciousness. He had a cappuccino, lovely. We went mad and had cake...I had the banana bread and he had the orange and almond cake. Highly recommended. Can the next branch you open be in Taunton please!

Best coffee ever here. Very mild, not bitter, better than the big high street brands by far. Great surroundings, inside or outside sitting area. Would definitely return for that coffee.

Visited for coffee, a chat and some homebakes with a friend. Before we had finished our coffees the owner approached us and said 'I need this table' and asked us 'how long had we been in here!' Clearly it was approaching lunch time, but we were totally astonished by her attitude to paying customers. One piece of advice - if you don't want customers taking time over a coffee, explain that you only serve lunch!

Lunch is from 12:00 to 3:00pm great choice of different meals. We had asparagus with egg and a cheese toasty with spring onions. Bread is an extra £2 with the asparagus, toasty is just that a toast, no salad leaves or even a few crisps. Very tasty.

We went as a family, and we all tried something new. There was nothing usual about the menu. As it was our first time, we all went safe. My order was the safest as I had the cheese on toast with a twist - yum, I ordered their salad that looked like it had been foraged- very fresh, beautifully presented and tasty. Next time I go I will be more adventurous. Only criticism was that the service was a little slow. It was fantastic and thanks so much, we will be back.

Just stopped off to grab a coffee, but the service was excellent and the milk/ gluten- free cake also noteworthy. Coffee pretty good too, but it's the gentle atmosphere percolating from some lovely objects that will draw us back.

Go to lunch venue whenever in the area. Today was only our third visit but it has been consistent on the quality and originality of their menu. Don't come for a low budget snack as quality costs. Service can be almost too relaxed, so give yourself time to unwind, people-watch and absorb the ambience.

This is what I would call an up market bistro. I visited for lunch on a Wednesday, not market day, and dined on a Cabalva farm suet crusted beef and ale pie. My memories of suet are that it is thick and soggy but not this pie. The crust was thin and fairly hard and contained plenty of beef. Hardly any fat and no other ingredients except for the sauce so no vegetables used as a filler. Pricey at £12.80 but almost a meal in itself and served hot hence a 20 minute wait. I chose a side dish of ratte herb potatoes for £3.50. This was expensive as there were 7 on the plate. 50 pence for a small, new potato was cheeky I thought. Tasted good though.

Such a nice place but on the three occasions I've visited the staff at the desk never say hello and when you say it they are very sharp and come across as unfriendly. The cafe staff seem OK but I've never been tempted to stay for refreshments. A pity.....

This place suited me down to the ground - imaginative and delicious dishes, with plenty of vegetarian options on offer. A delight for the eye and the tastebuds! Obviously a local treasure.

Relatively small choice but all the better for it. Interesting, delicious 'lite bites' with great quality ingredients, combining seasonal vegetables with fresh herbs and freshly baked bread. So tasty and consistently good. Never fail to find something enjoyable at this place and great coffee too as well as homemade cordial, again with interesting flavour combinations. Always a treat...

Recently visited for first time as it was dog friendly.however,it will be the last. We ordered soup which came without bread. We paid over £5 for several very small slices of bread. I paid £6 for a small glass of wine which exceeds extortionate prices at airports. At least you get a large glass there for £7!

This was my first visit to The Chapel but I hope it won't be the last. We were a large party but the staff coped beautifully and the food was of high quality. If you want to eat from a menu with more unusual options than many other cafes, this the right place for you. I ordered a glass of arguably the best apple juice on the planet and was able to buy a bottle from the range of home-produced goodies.

Had a lovely lunch here as a birthday treat. The menu isn't extensive but the quality of the food more than makes up for it. Will certainly return again. Upstairs is a great venue for small concerts

Set in the basement of the church with outside seating in the garden the place has a lovely feel to it. The staff were very friendly to our kids, encouraging them to seek out the colouring and the toys whilst they were waiting for the food to arrive. The food was delicious, especially the Welsh rarebit and the coffee was the best I have had in quite a while.

We have been coming to the Chapel twice a year whilst on holiday in Abergavenny . We loved it. But this visit was disappointing. The food was lovely what little there was if it. One slice of Welsh rarebit with nothing else no garnish nothing. For £7 this is a joke! The soup at £6 was delicious but the accompanying bread was extra . This is definitely a change from previous years. Will probably not visit again despite the excellent food and atmosphere. My husband came home to eat another lunch.

Had a lovely impromptu afternoon tea and cake with friends and family whilst at the Abergavenny food festival. Sat outside in lovely walled garden. A little haven away from the buzz of the festival. Wonderful cakes and savoury scones. Toilets spotless.

Called in during the week, if you like strong creamy coffee, and mouth watering cheese scones then this is the best place to go in Abergavenny, they also have a fantastic choice of other cakes as well as the meals menu.

Having not been to The Greyhound for a year or so, I was thrilled with our choice. Nothing had changed, everything was as good as before. Upon arrival we were greeted warmly and shown to our table. Despite the restaurant being busy, Service was prompt and friendly and the food ( Steak & Kidney Pie / Fruity Chicken Curry ) was plentiful and delicious. Highly recommended. We certainly won't leave it so long till we return

Beautiful location and beer garden is beautiful next to the river, however the barmaid was very snappy with my boyfriend and it seemed very clicky. A shame as it would be beautiful in the summer months

Another enjoyable visit to the Holland Arms. Usual friendly welcome and great service. We shared a duck starter from the specials board, amazing, especially the sauce. We then had lamb and steak as our mains. Both meats were delicious as were the accompanying vegetables. Good choice of wine (I enjoyed the Malbec). Couldn’t resist a bread and butter pudding for dessert - even though full. Look forward to our next visit - probably one of the Christmas meals now being advertised. Very reasonable bill.
