The best restaurants in Avondale and Stonehouse South Lanarkshire South West Scotland

We've visited this restaurant a few times, making use of their "Loyalty For Locals" card giving us 10% discount. Even without the discount card it's always good value for money. We visited again recently. As always never disappointed. But this time the food and service excelled. The standout dish was a starter from the "Specials" menu on Sunday, the "Pork Belly Chunks" starter, the pork belly complete with it's sauce absolutely hit the spot, an inspired creation, it was delicious. The best we've had here and possibly the best starter we've had anywhere. Washed down with the red Paarl Heights Shiraz. We've visited on and off for years, back when the restaurant used to be located on the right as you enter the front door, these days now a function room, and for the last several years now the restaurant is on the left where they extended into it's current location. All very well done and the restaurant just seems to go from strength to strength. We've never had a bad meal here but our recent visit was especially good. Thanks are due to manager Adam and all of his staff. Many thanks. We hope to return again soon.

We live in Fife and have never been to Strathaven before, but after visiting the Cafe Deli (Alexander Taylor) have left with a very positive impression of the town! Quick service, interesting menu, complimentary newspapers, plenty of customers. Enjoyed Armenian Lentil soup which was superb on a chilly winter's day, with some artisan bread from the associated bakery across the street. Sampled some nice tray bakes too.

Booked this restaurant after passing by it one evening while in Starthaven. I can't say I was overly impressed when we arrived. We were seated in the glass conservatory, right next to the wall heater that was blasting directly onto us. The waitress took 20 minutes before we were asked what we would like to order for drinks. Then a further 10 minutes to take our meal order after our drinks arrived. The starters were nice, but the chasni we ordered for two of our main dishes were pretty bland and the one I had, had several tough pieces of chicken, which put me off. I left most of it. My son ate all of his, so perhaps I was just unlucky. The young blonde haired waitress looked like she would rather be anywhere else than her work. She took a second drinks order and brought the small glasses of coke and not the pints of cola that we had asked for. Our table was overcrowded with the first round of glasses and cans that were left on the table when the second round of drinks were brought to us. The tables were too close together in the conservatory, we could barely get out when people sat at the table behind us. I was sadly disappointed with the whole experience, which was sad as I had high hopes after reading all the raving reviews. I wouldn't return.

Great local takeaway. Food always freshly made. Good sized portions and fast service. Operates on a cash only basis nowadays. Would highly recommend their beef,ginger and spring onion dish with fried rice.

Who knew batter could be so chewy? I guess that’s what happens when your haddock (questionable) has been left in the top oven for too long. Suppose that’s a recipe to make sure you can get as much grease as possible into the food though. Always been hit and miss here but more miss in recent times. Sorry to see the decline of this place - a long history in the village but fear that they are just not as committed to fresh cooked, high quality food.

Lovely location with ample car parking, and, for us, dog friendly! The Heron Farmshop and Kitchen is situated a few miles out of Strathaven and is well worth a visit. The staff ensured a good welcome and offered us a choice of tables in the dog friendly area. The food was cooked to order, nicely presented and delicious. In these days of escalating prices it is difficult to judge value for money but it was, perhaps, on the more expensive side of what I would have expected, but not expensive enough to rule out future visits! The farm shop was in a section adjacent to the dining area and it was obvious that the policy was to stock the best of locally available produce. We bought several items and really enjoyed the quality when we tried them at home. Payment in both the kitchen and the farmshop is ‘card only’ which I have no problem with, but the need to pay when ordering meals or products from the shop caused small queues to form and the first thing to come up on the pay screen was a question asking if I wanted to leave a tip. As I hadn’t seen the food, nor did I know what the service would be like, this ‘jarred’ and is the only reason that my score dropped a point from ‘excellent’ to ‘very good’. For an establishment like The Heron I think a much better impression would be made if the bill was presented after the meal, and a tip jar made available on the counter. If this was done, the tips would most likely increase, as the service was excellent.

Great food, reasonably priced food and friendly staff. Will be back. Although there appears to be a language communication barrier at times the staff are really professional and very helpful.

The most wonderful beetroot soup and the best bagels ever - pumpkin seed, light and delicious with salmon and cream cheese - Strathaven doesn't know how lucky it is to have such a gem, we've now been twice on successive visits to family in the area and were both hugely impressed and a little surprised that trip adviser isn't full of rave reviews for this cafe.

Excellent fish suppers, very tasty and freshly made, well priced too. The chicken suppers and pizza were also good, staff were pleasant and helpful.

First of all, Jasmine Inn is not a restaurant, it's a takeaway that does deliveries too. This is my local Chinese takeaway and for a long time I avoided it because of negative reviews on here but I wish I had ignored them. I love this wee hidden gem now and I haven't had a bad meal from them. Fair enough, the curry sauce isn't as spicy as some others but they ask you to request extra spices if you like it more hot. They do great crispy chicken wings and ribs, their satay sauces (there's 2 types) are so tasty and one is especially 'peanutty', and even their chips are fried to perfection. Give them a try, and if you want extra sauce with your ribs or satay, don't moan on here, ask the lady at the end of the phone before you finish ordering! Putting a nasty review on websites for one meal that didn't meet your standards is harsh, it can cost people their business!
