Ooooh. Truly great fish and chips in a village that knows well historically what it costs to harvest the sea. Whitehills has been a favourite of mine over many, many years. First as a child on caravan holidays in nearby Banff, later visiting vacationing family and taking my own along, and lastly as a wonderful experience for friends staying in the area. They'd already sussed out that Rock Fish is often fully booked, so we went early with a backup plan to get a takeaway if - as we immediately noticed - every table had a reserved sign (at 4pm!) However, they managed to sneak us in to a table that was reserved for slightly later, and that came as a relief to the oldest member of our party on a cold, wild day on the north-east coast. Imagine being at sea, or landing fish, in all that. We were treated to three very different and delicious dishes and one of my companions even tucked into a combo of fish and chicken, both of which suited her fine. My haddock was simply perfectly cooked and served with a smile, even though staff were very busy with large numbers of people at the takeaway counter and arriving to be seated. Whitehills and the wider area has other fine eateries and lots to see and do, but this place is where I'd go again and again for warm, local dining experiences.

Lovely friendly pub with great bar staff and a cosy fire - also really well decorated for Halloween. Well worth a visit, we will be back!

What a gem of a place! We come to this area on holiday regularly and always look forward to a take away from here. The food is excellent and probably the best Chinese take away weāve had. The lady who runs it is delightful and the girls behind the counter are great. Canāt wait to return.

Lovely sandwiches and good coffee. Good service in a lovely tearoom within the elegant house. The salad with the sandwiches could have done with a bit of dressing it was a bit dry and bitter. Apart from that would recommend as great choice of soup, sandwiches and great choice of cakes and scones. Very good value When visiting Duff House highly recommend it.

The food was very good but the service was poor. The staff were working very hard but there simply werenāt enough of them.

The Market Cross in Bury St Edmund's Buttermarket is coming to life again. For too long this elegant Robert Adams building was neglected but now it's becoming a gallery and venue for live music, comedy, arts and crafts, theatre, dance lessons, markets and somewhere to enjoy good food in a relaxed atmosphere. I recently held a Big Birthday party for 35 guests and everyone was impressed by the welcome, the service, food and value for money plus there's a lift to the first floor.

Whilst touring the area found this pub courtesy of āGoogleā maps. Right opposite is a small Pay & display car park with more spaces 40 metres away. At the time of visiting one hour was free provided you got a ticket, however a ālocalā at the bar informed me that from June they were axing this āfreeā period. Itās a low door into this old pub, but once inside I was welcomed by the landlord who confirmed that meals were being served. It was a darkish place but they were happy to chat and when my soup arrived it was piping hot and enjoyable. This being May in Scotland it was extremely stormy and a soup and a sandwich fitted the bill and not expensive either. Recommended. Photo is of Eider Ducks on the coast near the Ship Inn.

We were on holiday near here, enjoyed visiting many craft bakeries but only spotted this one the day before we left. Went in on the day we left to get some rowies (butteries) to take home: they were put in a white paper bag. The counter is high, with display cases. Only discovered when we got home that two of them were well fired to the point of being burnt. How did the server (Saturday boy, I think) believe that was okay - but why had the baker chosen to put them on sale? Maybe some local like them like that, but please ask. However, there was a delightful range of baked goods, and my sister enjoyed the wee custard creams we brought her. So caveat emptor - buyer beware! Check what they are giving you.
